Abstract
In this article, we review recent progress concerning the development of sensorial platforms based on graphene derivatives and conducting polymers (CPs), alternatively deposited or co-deposited on the working electrode (usually a glassy carbon electrode; GCE) using a simple potentiostatic method (often cyclic voltammetry; CV), possibly followed by the deposition of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) on the electrode surface (ES). These materials have been successfully used to detect an extended range of biomolecules of clinical interest, such as uric acid (UA), dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA), adenine, guanine, and others. The most common method is electrochemical synthesis. In the composites, which are often combined with metallic NPs, the interaction between the graphene derivatives-including graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), or graphene quantum dots (GQDs)-and the CPs is usually governed by non-covalent functionalization through π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals (VW) forces. The functionalization of GO, RGO, or GQDs with CPs has been shown to speed up electron transfer during the oxidation process, thus improving the electrochemical response of the resulting sensor. The oxidation mechanism behind the electrochemical response of the sensor seems to involve a partial charge transfer (CT) from the analytes to graphene derivatives, due to the overlapping of π orbitals.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA), epinephrine (EP), and norepinephrine (NEP) are the main catecholamine of clinical interest, as they play crucial roles in the regulation of nervous and cardiovascular systems and are involved in some brain behaviors, such as stress, panic, anxiety, and depression. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a reliable sensing device able to provide their continuous monitoring in a minimally invasive manner. In this work, the first highly nanoporous gold (h-nPG) microneedle-based sensor is presented for continuous monitoring of catecholamine in interstitial fluid (ISF). The h-nPG microneedle-based gold electrode was prepared by a simple electrochemical self-templating method that involves two steps, gold electrodeposition and hydrogen bubbling at the electrode surface, realized by sweeping the potential between + 0.8 V and 0 V vs Ag/AgCl for 25 scans in a 10 mM HAuCl4 solution containing 2.5 M NH4Cl, and successively applying a fixed potential of − 2 V vs Ag/AgCl for 60 s. The resulting microneedle-based h-nPG sensor displays an interference-free total catecholamine detection expressed as NEP concentration, with a very low LOD of 100 nM, excellent sensitivity and stability, and fast response time (< 4 s). The performance of the h-nPG microneedle array sensor was successively assessed in artificial ISF and in a hydrogel skin model at typical physiological concentrations.

Abstract
In this work, a noble-metal-free composite electrode was prepared based on PMo12O403- (PMo12), C9H5FeO7 (MIL-100(Fe), a Fe-based metal organic framework) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and served as a high performance electrochemical sensor for synchronous detection of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA). The PMo12@MIL-100(Fe)@PVP composite electrode was fabricated by a in-situ hydrothermal method. Thanks to the synergistic effect of three active components (PMo12, MIL-100 and PVP), the electrode possesses large specific surface area and high electrical conductivity and therefore it shows high electrocatalytic oxidation performance of DA and UA with a spacing of 0.146 V between the two peak positions. These benefits of the electrode enable its electrochemical sensor to synchronously detect of DA and UA. Namely, the linear ranges can achieve 1-247 μM for DA and 5-406 μM for UA. Meanwhile, the detection limits are 0.586 μM for DA and 0.372 μM for UA. Moreover, the sensor can be applied to simultaneous determination of UA and DA in human serums with satisfactory recovery values.

Abstract
An electrochemical sensor based on an antimony/nitrogen-doped porous carbon (Sb/NPC) composite has been developed for the quantitative detection of albumin from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Sb/NPC is hydrothermally synthesized from Sn/NPC precursors. The synthesized precursor (Sn/NPC) and the product (Sb/NPC) are characterized by XRD, FTIR, TGA, UV/Vis, SEM, and AFM. Cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance studies are used to investigate the electrochemical performance of Sb/NPC-GCE. Sb/NPC-GCE detects albumin at physiological pH of 7.4 in the potential range 0.92 V and 0.09 V for oxidation and reduction, respectively. LOD and recovery of Sb/NPC-GCE for the determination of albumin are 0.13 ng.mL-1 and 66.6 ± 0.97-100 ± 2.73%, respectively. Chronoamperometry of the modified working electrode demonstrates its stability for 14 h, indicating its reusability and reproducibility. Sb/NPC-GCE is a selective sensor for albumin detection in the presence of interfering species. The electrode has been applied for albumin detection in human serum samples of HCC patients. A negative correlation of albumin with alpha-fetoprotein levels in HCC patients is observed by statistical analysis.

Abstract
In this work, we successfully demonstrated the fabrication of a chemical sensor for toxic 1,1-dimethyl-3-phenylurea (fenuron) by using a hollow polypyrrole composite film. Here, we studied the interaction between negatively charged phosphate anions enclosed in the film with positively charged nitrogen atoms present in the fenuron. The electrochemical response of the film was characterized by cyclic voltammetry in which, interestingly, we observed that the bigger alkyl aryl sulphonate ions were replaced by smaller phosphate ions with the creation of hollow/pore composite films. Confirmation for ion replacement in the film and porosity of the film were studied by elemental analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The tuning of hydrophilic to hydrophobic nature of the hollow composite film was tested by the wettability test (contact angle measurement). The electrocatalytic materials, as well as the fenuron sensing conditions such as pH and film thickness, were wisely optimized on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes for better performance. We can enhance the fenuron sensitivity by over 5 times as compared to that on the GC substrate. To our knowledge, this is the first electrochemical fenuron sensor based on a hollow polymer film by differential pulse voltammetry which can detect lower concentrations and show quick response compared to other reports. This method has potential applications in the electrochemical sensing platform with good sensitive and selective analysis in agriculture groundwater samples.

A novel electrochemical sensing platform for detection of dopamine based on gold nanobipyramid/multi-walled carbon nanotube hybrids. Anal Bioanal Chem 2020; 412:2433-2441. Abstract
Dopamine homeostasis is an important clinical diagnostic index, because an abnormal level in the human body is closely related to certain serious diseases. Herein, a novel electrochemical sensing platform based on gold nanobipyramid/multi-walled carbon nanotube hybrids (AuNBP/MWCNTs) is developed to detect dopamine in human fluids. Using field emission scanning electron microscopy, it is observed that AuNBPs of about 60 nm with two pyramids are well dispersed on the surface of MWCNTs. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm that AuNBPs are self-assembled onto the surface of MWCNTs to form the hybrids. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that the AuNBP/MWCNTs exhibit good electrocatalytic activity toward dopamine oxidation owing to the synergistic effects of AuNBPs and MWCNTs. In addition, both cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry display three well-resolved and distinct oxidation peaks on the AuNBP/MWCNT-modified glassy carbon electrode. Based on AuNBP/MWCNTs, the newly developed electrochemical sensor is used to detect dopamine in the presence of ascorbic acid and uric acid over a wide linear range from 50 nM to 2.7 mM and a low detection limit of 15 nM (at S/N = 3). The electrochemical sensor can also be applied for the quantitative analysis of dopamine in real samples. Graphical abstract A novel electrochemical sensing platform based on gold nanobipyramid/multi-walled carbon nanotube hybrids (AuNBP/MWCNTs) was proposed to detect dopamine in the presence of ascorbic acid and uric acid.

Abstract
Nowadays, several neurological disorders and neurocrine tumours are associated with dopamine (DA) concentrations in various biological fluids. Highly accurate and ultrasensitive detection of DA levels in different biological samples in real-time can change and improve the quality of a patient's life in addition to reducing the treatment cost. Therefore, the design and development of diagnostic tool for in vivo and in vitro monitoring of DA is of considerable clinical and pharmacological importance. In recent decades, a large number of techniques have been established for DA detection, including chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, spectroscopic approaches, and electrochemical (EC) methods. These methods are effective, but most of them still have some drawbacks such as consuming time, effort, and money. Added to that, sometimes they need complex procedures to obtain good sensitivity and suffer from low selectivity due to interference from other biological species such as uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA). Advanced materials can offer remarkable opportunities to overcome drawbacks in conventional DA sensors. This review aims to explain challenges related to DA detection using different techniques, and to summarize and highlight recent advancements in materials used and approaches applied for several sensor surface modification for the monitoring of DA. Also, it focuses on the analytical features of the EC and optical-based sensing techniques available.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive dopamine (DA) electrochemical sensor was fabricated based on magnetism-assisted modification of screen printed electrode (SPE) with magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (mMWCNTs). The mMWCNTs modified electrodes (mMWCNTs/SPE) combines the advantages of SPE and the simultaneous contribution of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and MWCNTs, increasing sensitivity and selectivity of DA detection. The linearity was found between 5μM to 180μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.43μM. In the mean time, this modified electrode exhibited excellent selectivity for DA detection with almost no interference from ascorbic acid (AA), which co-exists with DA in many bio-samples and causes common interference. Finally, this novel electrode has been applied to determine DA concentration in spiked human blood serum and satisfactory recovery was found in the range of 97.43-102.94% with the RSDs of less than 2.27%. This work developed a sensitive and reliable electrochemical analytical method based on mMWCNTs/SPE, which exhibits great potential for diagnosis of the diseases related to DA.
