3D-Printed Microelectrodes for Biological Measurement

Microelectrodes are useful electrochemical sensors that can provide spatial biological monitoring. Carbon fiber has been by far the most widely used microelectrode; however, a vast number of different materials and modification strategies have been developed to broaden the scope of microelectrodes. Carbon composite electrodes provide a simple approach to making microelectrodes with a wide range of materials, but manufacturing strategies are complex. 3D printing can provide the ability to make microelectrodes with high precision. We used fused filament fabrication to print single strands of carbon black/polylactic acid (CB/PLA) and multiwall carbon nanotube/polylactic acid (MWCNT/PLA), which were then made into microelectrodes. Microelectrodes ranged from 70 μm in diameter to 400 μm in diameter and were assessed using standard redox probes. MWCNT/PLA electrodes exhibited greater sensitivity, a lower limit of detection, and stability for the measurement of serotonin (5-HT). Both CB/PLA and MWCNT/PLA microelectrodes were able to monitor 5-HT overflow from the ex vivo ileum tissue. MWCNT/PLA microelectrodes were utilized to show differences in 5-HT overflow from ex vivo ileum and colon following exposure to odorants present in spices. These findings highlight that any conductive thermoplastic material can be fabricated into a microelectrode. This simple strategy can utilize a wide range of materials to make 3D-printed microelectrodes for a diverse range of applications.

An innovative experimental and mathematical approach in electrochemical sensing for mapping a drug sensor landscape

Our study delves into the examination of an electrochemical sensor through both experimentation and mathematical analysis. The sensor demonstrates the ability to identify a specific antipsychotic medication, namely Chlorpromazine Hydrochloride (CPH), even at incredibly low concentrations, reaching the picomolar level. The identification process relies on the utilization of a Glassy Carbon Electrode (GCE) that has been modified with a ceria-doped zirconia (CeO2/ZrO2) nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was synthesized using the co-precipitation technique and extensively characterized through various analytical methods. It is crucial to detect the presence of CPH as an overdose can result in hyperactivity and severe bipolar disorders among both children and adults. The average size of the nanocomposite was estimated to be 10 nm. The electrode surface area after CeO2/ZrO2 modification of the GCE was found to be 0.059 cm2, which was significantly higher than the electrode surface area of the bare GCE (0.0307 cm2). The limit of detection and limit of quantification for CPH were calculated to be 99.3 pM and 3.010 nM, respectively, with the linear dynamic range of CPH detection found to be between 0.10 and 1.90 μM. The modified sensor electrode was tested on human urine samples with good recoveries and exhibited high selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and long-term stability. The experimental voltammograms and the simulated stochastic voltammograms exhibited a fair amount of agreement. Examination of the experimental findings alongside analytical and numerical solutions enables a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing the outcome of electrochemical measurements. The precise findings can be leveraged for the development of efficient sensing devices for medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring.

Solid-electrolyte interphase nucleation and growth on carbonaceous negative electrodes for Li-ion batteries visualized with in situ atomic force microscopy

Li-ion battery performance and life cycle strongly depend on a passivation layer called solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). Its structure and composition are studied in great details, while its formation process remains elusive due to difficulty of in situ measurements of battery electrodes. Here we provide a facile methodology for in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements of SEI formation on cross-sectioned composite battery electrodes allowing for direct observations of SEI formation on various types of carbonaceous negative electrode materials for Li-ion batteries. Using this approach, we observed SEI nucleation and growth on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), MesoCarbon MicroBeads (MCMB) graphite, and non-graphitizable amorphous carbon (hard carbon). Besides the details of the formation mechanism, the electrical and mechanical properties of the SEI layers were assessed. The comparative observations revealed that the electrode potentials for SEI formation differ depending on the nature of the electrode material, whereas the adhesion of SEI to the electrode surface clearly correlates with the surface roughness of the electrode. Finally, the same approach applied to a positive LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 electrode did not reveal any signature of cathodic SEI thus demonstrating fundamental differences in the stabilization mechanisms of the negative and positive electrodes in Li-ion batteries.
