Amino-substituted Tröger’s base: electrochemical polymerization and characterization of the polymer film

Unraveling the influence of substrate on the growth rate, morphology and covalent structure of surface adherent polydopamine films

Polydopamine (PDA), also known as synthetic melanin, is widely used as a biomimetic anchoring layer for the modification of various solid substrates. PDA is utilized for a wide range of biomedical, sensing and tribological applications, even though the polymer's precise covalent structure has not been completely revealed yet. Even more, it is not evident to which extent the chemical nature of the substrate, on which the layer is formed, influences and predetermines the covalent structure of resulting PDA. In this contribution, we have studied the growth of PDA using various surface-sensitive techniques such as spectroscopic ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We supplemented grazing angle attenuated total reflection FTIR spectroscopy with multivariate statistical analysis to further gain analytical power. We have particularly focused on the effects of polymerization time and substrate on the PDA structure. We found notable differences in the chemical composition of PDA formed on gold and on surfaces terminated with oxides/reactive hydroxides such as silicon and N-dopped-TiO₂ in the early stages of the layer formation. At the later stages of layer formation, a merely unified chemical structure was observed independently on the type of substrate.

Vibrational spectroscopic study of selected alkaloids with therapeutic effects

Nowadays, scientists from various fields of chemistry, biochemistry or biology are interested in trace detection of different natural or synthetic substances such as alkaloids which can either positively or negatively affect human physical and mental health. Linked with that, growing interest in broad applications of advanced vibrational spectroscopic techniques encourage higher demands in this rapidly developing field. This study is focused on a detailed description of infrared and Raman spectra of two natural alkaloids (namely galantamine and buprenorphine) and study of their optical response in the vicinity of gold and silver nanostructured surface. The interpretation of individual bands was supported by DFT calculations. Both alkaloids were also studied using surface-enhanced Raman scattering technique aiming at a comparison with non-enhanced vibrational data construction of concentration-dependent series and determination of their limit of detection. From SERS spectral series the regression models were developed to predict alkaloids concentration in the range of 10^-3-10^-7 mol/l, in the case of buprenorphine adsorbed on Ag substrate we were able to broaden this range down to 10^-9 mol/l.

Effect of structural factors on the physicochemical properties of functionalized polyanilines

This review discusses the physical and physicochemical properties of polyaniline (PANI) derivatives. The most important methods for the preparation of functionalized polyanilines are presented. The presence of various substituents in its structure changes the polymer characteristics significantly due to steric and electronic effects of the functional groups. This review describes the relationship between the properties of functionalized polyanilines depending on the nature, number and position of the substituents at the aromatic ring.
