Abstract
This research focuses on studying the effects of various pretreatment types on a PtCu/C catalyst synthesized by the co-deposition of metal precursors. The treatment in a 1 M HNO3 solution for 1 h is shown to result in a slight increase in activity in the oxygen electroreduction reaction (both the mass activity and specific activity calculated for the value of the electrochemically active surface area). The sample obtained after the thermal treatment, which is carried out at 350 °C under an argon atmosphere for 1 h, demonstrates 1.7 times higher specific activity than the sample before the treatment. The durability testing results obtained by the stress testing method in a potential range of 0.6-1.4 V during 2000 cycles show that the PtCu/C catalysts after both the acid treatment and the thermal treatment are characterized by higher residual activity than the sample in the "as-prepared" state.

Abstract
The present study, concerned with high-performance ORR catalysts, may be a valuable resource for a wide range of researchers within the fields of nanomaterials, electrocatalysis, and hydrogen energy. The objects of the research are electrocatalysts based on platinum–copper nanoparticles with onion-like and solid-solution structures. To evaluate the functional characteristics of the catalysts, the XRD, XRF, TEM, HAADF-STEM, and EDX methods, as well as the voltammetry method on a rotating disk electrode have been used. This work draws the attention of researchers to the significance of applying a protocol of electrochemically activating bimetallic catalysts in terms of the study of their functional characteristics on the rotating disk electrode. The choice of the potential range during the pre-cycling stage has been shown to play a crucial role in maintaining the durability of the catalysts. The activation of the PtCu/C catalyst during cycling of up to 1.0 V allows for an increase in the durability of the catalysts with onion-like and solid-solution structures of nanoparticles by 28% and 23%, respectively, as compared with activation of up to 1.2 V.

Abstract
Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) have attracted more and more attention because of their unique advantages such as low cost and low toxicity. However, sluggish C-C bond cleavage during the ethanol electrooxidation reaction (EOR) in acidic media results in a lower energy yield and gravely hinders the commercialization of DEFCs. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop an anode catalyst with high performance, high stability and low cost to solve this problem. In this paper, Pt/MoCx/MWCNTs nanocomposites with different mass ratios of PtMo were obtained through a molecular self-assembly technology. The structure and morphology of Pt/MoCx/MWCNTs nanocomposites were characterized by several techniques such as XRD, FESEM, XPS, etc. The electrochemical performance and stability of Pt/WCx/MWCNTs electrocatalysts toward EOR were investigated in acid electrolytes. The results show that PtMo exists in the form of alloy. The size of Pt/MoCx nanoparticles is very uniform with an average size of ∼24 nm. The Pt/MoC0.25/MWCNTs exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activities with an electrochemically active surface area of 37.1 m2 g−1, a peak current density of 610.4 mA mgPt−1 and a steady-state current density of 39.8 mA mgPt−1 after 7,200 s, suggesting that the Pt/MoC0.25/MWCNTs is a very promising candidate for application in EOR of DEFCs.

Abstract
The composition, structure, catalytic activity in the ORR and stability of PtCo/C materials, obtained in two stages and compared with commercial Pt/C analogs, were studied. At the first stage of the synthesis performed by electrodeposition of cobalt on a carbon support, a CoOx/C composite containing 8% and 25 wt% cobalt oxide was successfully obtained. In the second step, PtCoOx/C catalysts of Pt1.56Co and Pt1.12Co composition containing 14 and 30 wt% Pt, respectively, were synthesized based on the previously obtained composites. According to the results of the composition and structure analysis of the obtained PtCoOx/C catalysts by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods, the formation of small bimetallic nanoparticles on the carbon support surface has been proved. The resulting catalysts demonstrated up to two times higher specific catalytic activity in the ORR and high stability compared to commercial Pt/C analogs.

Abstract
Most electrocatalysts show a high mass and special activity during the ethanol oxidation reaction, but those still suffer from limited stability, finite renewable capability and poor anti-poisoning durability. Furthermore, the reliable structure and appropriate composition of catalysts are fairly associated with the electrocatalysis performance. Herein, we report the development of trimetallic Pd61Sn34Cu5nanocrystals (NCs) whose rough surfaces are rich in step atoms and coupled with abundant of SnOxand CuO, which may effectively boost reaction activity and rapidly remove carbonaceous intermediate, respectively. Under the tuning on the composition, the defect rich Pd61Sn34Cu5NCs exhibit elevated electrocatalysis activity and durability for ethanol oxidation reaction with an optimized mass activity (1.26 AmgPd-1) and specific activity (10.6 mA cm-2), which is about 2.21 and 2.58 times greater than that of the commercial Pd/C catalyst (0.57 AmgPd-1and 4.1 mA cm-2).

Abstract
The behavior of supported alloyed and de-alloyed platinum-copper catalysts, which contained 14–27% wt. of Pt, was studied in the reactions of methanol electrooxidation (MOR) and oxygen electroreduction (ORR) in 0.1 M HClO4 solutions. Alloyed PtCux/C catalysts were prepared by a multistage sequential deposition of copper and platinum onto a Vulcan XC72 dispersed carbon support. De-alloyed PtCux−y/C catalysts were prepared by PtCux/C materials pretreatment in acid solutions. The effects of the catalysts initial composition and the acid treatment condition on their composition, structure, and catalytic activity in MOR and ORR were studied. Functional characteristics of platinum-copper catalysts were compared with those of commercial Pt/C catalysts when tested, both in an electrochemical cell and in H2/Air membrane-electrode assembly (MEA). It was shown that the acid pretreatment of platinum-copper catalysts practically does not have negative effect on their catalytic activity, but it reduces the amount of copper passing into the solution during the subsequent electrochemical study. The activity of platinum-copper catalysts in the MOR and the current-voltage characteristics of the H2/Air proton-exchange membrane fuel cell MEAs measured in the process of their life tests were much higher than those of the Pt/C catalysts.

Abstract
Here we report the synthesis of 9 nm Ni(OH)2 decorated Pt-Cu octahedra (Ni(OH)2-PtCu) in one-pot synthesis for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) electrocatalysis in acidic electrolyte. To prepare Ni(OH)2-PtCu octahedra, CO gas was directly introduced in a reaction process as selective capping agents on the PtCu(111) facet. Ni(OH)2 was naturally deposited on the Pt-Cu octahedra during the synthesis. Carbon supported Ni(OH)2-PtCu (Ni(OH)2-PtCu/C) as an EOR catalyst showed enhanced CO tolerance due to the existence of oxophilic Ni(OH)2 on the surface of Pt-Cu, facilitating water dissolution to produce OH adsorption and to promote complete CO oxidation to CO2. In addition, Pt-Cu alloy composition also showed improvement of CO tolerance because of modified d-band structure of the Pt atoms, thereby weakening the binding strength of CO on the catalysts. Therefore, the Ni(OH)2-PtCu/C showed enhanced EOR activity and durability compared to the Pt-Cu octahedra and commercial Pt/C counterparts.
