Abstract
Herein, the electrochemical properties and reaction mechanism of Li3-2 x Cax V2 (PO4 )3 /C (x = 0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5) as negative electrode materials for sodium-ion/potassium-ion batteries (SIBs/PIBs) are investigated. All samples undergo a mixed contribution of diffusion-controlled and pseudocapacitive-type processes in SIBs and PIBs via Trasatti Differentiation Method, while the latter increases with Ca content increase. Among them, Li3 V2 (PO4 )3 /C exhibits the highest reversible capacity in SIBs and PIBs, while Ca1.5 V2 (PO4 )3 /C shows the best rate performance with a capacity retention of 46% at 20 C in SIBs and 47% at 10 C in PIBs. This study demonstrates that the specific capacity of this type of material in SIBs and PIBs does not increase with the Ca-content as previously observed in lithium-ion system, but the stability and performance at a high C-rate can be improved by replacing Li+ with Ca2+ . This indicates that the insertion of different monovalent cations (Na+ /K+ ) can strongly influence the redox reaction and structure evolution of the host materials, due to the larger ion size of Na+ and K+ and their different kinetic properties with respect to Li+ . Furthermore, the working mechanism of both LVP/C and Ca1.5 V2 (PO4 )3 /C in SIBs are elucidated via in operando synchrotron diffraction and in operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Abstract
To outline the role of dual-ion intercalation chemistry to reach sustainable energy storage, the present Review aimed to compare two types of batteries: widely accepted dual-ion batteries based on cationic and anionic co-intercalation versus newly emerged hybrid metal-ion batteries using the co-intercalation of cations only. Among different charge carrier cations, the focus was on the materials able to co-intercalate monovalent ions (such Li+ and Na+ , Li+ and K+ , Na+ and K+ , etc.) or couples of mono- and multivalent ions (Li+ and Mg2+ , Na+ and Mg2+ , Na+ and Zn2+ , H+ and Zn2+ , etc.). Furthermore, the Review was directed on co-intercalation materials composed of environmentally benign and low-cost transition metals (e. g., Mn, Fe, etc.). The effect of the electrolyte on the co-intercalation properties was also discussed. The summarized knowledge on dual-ion energy storage could stimulate further research so that the hybrid metal-ion batteries become feasible in near future.

Abstract
Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are promising candidates to replace currently commercialized lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in large-scale energy storage applications owing to their merits of abundant resources, low cost, high theoretical volumetric capacity, etc. However, the development of RMBs is still facing great challenges including the incompatibility of the electrolyte and the lack of suitable cathode materials with high reversible capacity and fast kinetics of Mg2+ . While tremendous efforts have been made to explore compatible electrolytes and appropriate electrode materials, the rational design of unconventional Mg-based battery systems is another effective strategy for achieving high electrochemical performance. This review specifically discusses the recent research progress of various Mg-based battery systems. First, the optimization of electrolyte and electrode materials for conventional RMBs is briefly discussed. Furthermore, various Mg-based battery systems, including Mg-chalcogen (S, Se, Te) batteries, Mg-halogen (Br2 , I2 ) batteries, hybrid-ion batteries, and Mg-based dual-ion batteries are systematically summarized. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of different Mg-based battery systems, which can inspire latecomers to explore new strategies for the development of high-performance and practically available RMBs.

Abstract
A post-lithium battery era is envisaged, and it is urgent to find new and sustainable systems for energy storage. Multivalent metals, such as magnesium, are very promising to replace lithium, but the low mobility of magnesium ion and the lack of suitable electrolytes are serious concerns. This review mainly discusses the advantages and shortcomings of the new rechargeable magnesium batteries, the future directions and the possibility of using solid electrolytes. Special emphasis is put on the diversity of structures, and on the theoretical calculations about voltage and structures. A critical issue is to select the combination of the positive and negative electrode materials to achieve an optimum battery voltage. The theoretical calculations of the structure, intercalation voltage and diffusion path can be very useful for evaluating the materials and for comparison with the experimental results of the magnesium batteries which are not hassle-free.

Abstract
As a next-generation electrochemical energy storage technology, rechargeable magnesium (Mg)-based batteries have attracted wide attention because they possess a high volumetric energy density, low safety concern, and abundant sources in the earth's crust. While a few reviews have summarized and discussed the advances in both cathode and anode materials, a comprehensive and profound review focusing on the material design strategies that are both representative of and peculiar to the performance improvement of rechargeable Mg-based batteries is rare. In this mini-review, all nine of the material design strategies and approaches to improve Mg-ion storage properties of cathode materials have been comprehensively examined from both internal and external aspects. Material design concepts are especially highlighted, focusing on designing "soft" anion-based materials, intercalating solvated or complex ions, expanding the interlayer of layered cathode materials, doping heteroatoms into crystal lattice, size tailoring, designing metastable-phase materials, and developing organic materials. To achieve a better anode, strategies based on the artificial interlayer design, efficient electrolyte screening, and alternative anodes exploration are also accumulated and analyzed. The strategy advances toward Mg-S and Mg-Se batteries are summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of all-collected material design strategies and approaches are critically discussed from practical application perspectives. This mini-review is expected to provide a clear research clue on how to rationally improve the reliability and feasibility of rechargeable Mg-based batteries and give some insights for the future research of Mg-based batteries as well as other multivalent-ion battery chemistries.

Abstract
As a potential next-generation energy storage system, rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have been receiving increasing attention due to their excellent safety performance and high energy density. However, the sluggish kinetics of Mg2+ in the cathode has become one of the main bottlenecks restricting the development of RMBs. Here, we introduce oxygen vacancies to spherical NaV6O15 cross-linked with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (denoted as SNVOX-CNT) as a cathode material to achieve an impressive long-term cycle life of RMBs. The introduction of oxygen vacancies can improve the electrochemical performance of the NaV6O15-X cathode material. Besides, owing to the introduction of CNTs, excellent internal/external electronic conduction paths can be built inside the whole electrode, which further achieves excellent electrochemical performance. Moreover, such a unique structure can efficiently improve the diffusion kinetics of Mg2+ (ranging from 1.28 × 10-12 to 7.21 × 10-12 cm2·s-1). Simulation calculations further prove that oxygen vacancies can cause Mg2+ to be inserted in NaV6O15-X. Our work proposes a strategy for the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies and CNTs to improve the diffusion coefficient of Mg2+ in NaV6O15 and enhance the electrochemical performance of RMBs.

Abstract
Benefiting from a higher volumetric capacity (3833 mA h cm-3 for Mg vs. 2046 mA h cm-3 for Li) and dendrite-free Mg metal anode, reversible Mg batteries (RMBs) are a promising chemistry for applications beyond Li ion batteries. However, RMBs are still severely restricted by the absence of high performance cathodes for any practical application. In this review, we provide a critical and rigorous review of Mg battery cathode materials, mainly reported since 2013, focusing on the impact of structure and composition on magnesiation kinetics. We discuss cathode materials, including intercalation compounds, conversion materials (O2, S, organic compounds), water co-intercalation cathodes (V2O5, MnO2etc.), as well as hybrid systems using Mg metal anode. Among them, intercalation cathodes are further categorized by 3D (Chevrel phase, spinel structure etc.), 2D (layered structure), and 1D materials (polyanion: phosphate and silicate), according to the diffusion pathway of Mg2+ in the framework. Instead of discussing every published work in detail, this review selects the most representative works and highlights the merits and challenges of each class of cathodes. Advances in theoretical analysis are also reviewed and compared with experimental results. This critical review will provide comprehensive knowledge of Mg cathodes and guidelines for exploring new cathodes for rechargeable magnesium batteries.
