Facile and scalable preparation of nitrogen, phosphorus codoped nanoporous carbon as oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst

Elucidating the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon on complex spinel NiFe2O4 towards oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media

The study presents for the first time complex spinel NiFe2O4 nanoparticles supported on nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon nanosheets (NPCNS) prepared using sol gel and the carbonization of graphitic carbon nitride with lecithin as a highly active and durable electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction. The physicochemical properties of complex spinel NiFe2O4 on NPCNS and subsequent nanomaterials were investigated using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical activity of the electrocatalysts was evaluated using hydrodynamic linear sweep voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and chronoamperometry. The electrocatalytic performance of the NiFe2O4/NPCNS nanohybrid electrocatalyst is dominated by the 4e- transfer mechanism, with an onset potential of 0.92 V vs. RHE, which is closer to that of the Pt/C, and a current density of 7.81 mA/cm2 that far exceeds that of the Pt/C. The nanohybrid demonstrated the best stability after 14 400 s, outstanding durability after 521 cycles, and the best ability to oxidize methanol and remove CO from its active sites during CO tolerance studies. This improved catalytic activity can be attributed to small nanoparticle sizes of the unique complex spinel nickel ferrite structure, N-Fe/Ni coordination of nanocomposite, high dispersion, substantial ECSA of 47.03 mF/cm2, and synergy caused by strong metal-support and electronic coupling interactions.

Recyclable Fe/S co-doped nanocarbon derived from metal-organic framework as a peroxymonosulfate activator for efficient removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol

In this study, a recyclable Fe/S co-doped nanocarbon (Fe/S-NC) was successfully prepared by the pyrolysis of ZIF-8 confined with Fe(II) and added S. Characterization showed that a highly graphitized carbon-based material co-doped with sulfur and iron was successfully prepared. This Fe/S-NC can efficiently activate PMS to remove organic pollutants in water. The effect of different synthesis conditions on the degradation efficiency of 2,4-DCP was studied by orthogonal experiments. The optimized Fe/S-NC/PMS system exhibited excellent catalytic performance and could degrade more than 99.7% of 2,4-DCP within 30 min. Even after 5 cycles, the degradation efficiency could still be maintained above 96.3%, which proved that the catalytic system had good cycle performance. In addition, the effect of pH on catalytic performance showed that the degradation rate of 2,4-DCP exceeds 96.7% in the pH range of groundwater (pH = 5-9). We had confirmed that the free radicals that caused 2,4-DCP degradation were SO₄^·-, ·OH, O₂^·-, and ¹O₂, which played important roles in degrading organic pollutants. These research results show that the Fe/S-NC/PMS system can be used as an efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly system to treat organic pollutants in groundwater.

Mechanism investigation for ultra-efficient photocatalytic water disinfection based on rational design of indirect Z-scheme heterojunction black phosphorus QDs/Cu2O nanoparticles

Photocatalysis has been regarded as a promising inactivation technology targeting to reduce drug-resistant bacteria contamination, but developing efficient photocatalysts with broad visible light harvesting capability is still a challenge. Here we report a MOFs-derived BPQDs/Cu₂O/N-doped hollow porous carbon (BP/CNC) with indirect Z-scheme heterojunctions (BPQDs/Cu₂O), which can inactivate 99.99999% Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at a concentration of only 10 mg/L. Combining photoelectrochemical techniques and electrochemical measurements, the efficient inactivation process was attributed to the synergistic effect of enhanced light utilization and effective suppression of photogenerated carrier recombination. The mechanism of gradually damaged cell membrane for MRSA was studied by employing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescence staining and coagulase titer test to further decipher the changes in bacterial cells. We propose that reactive oxygen species (ROS) destroys the cell wall membrane and causes the leakage of cell contents, eventually leading to death. In addition, a series of in vitro and in vivo toxicity tests were conducted to evaluate the biocompatibility of the antibacterial system and its potential use in practice. This strategy of BPQDs/Cu₂O indirect heterojunction fabrication can spatially inhibit the recombination of photogenerated carriers, expands the light absorption range, providing a feasible method for disinfecting microbial contaminated water.

N-Doped porous biocarbon materials derived from soya peptone as efficient electrocatalysts for the ORR

Facile construction of Fe, N and P co-doped carbon spheres by carbothermal strategy for the adsorption and reduction of U(vi)

In this work, nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped magnetic carbon spheres encapsulating well-dispersed active Fe nanocrystals (Fe/P-CN) were fabricated via a simple copolymer pyrolysis strategy. Benefiting from heteroatoms doping, Fe/P-CN could primarily adsorb soluble U(vi) ions through abundant functional groups, and subsequently, the adsorbed U(vi) could be reduced to insoluble U(iv) by Fe nanocrystals. Fe/P-CN pyrolyzed at 800 °C (Fe/P-CN-800) exhibited excellent U(vi) removal capacity of 306.76 mg g⁻¹, surpassing nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon spheres and nano zero-valent iron. In addition, the magnetic separation and thermal reactivation properties endow Fe/P-CN-800 with excellent reusability. This research, especially, provides a promising synergistic adsorption and reduction strategy to effectively remove U(vi) using heteroatom-doped composites.

The constructed novel magnetic carbon sphere co-doped by N, P, Fe (Fe/P-CN) exhibits high U(vi) removal efficiency, excellent magnetic separation and reusability, evidencing the potential practical applications in environmental remediation.

High-sulfur coal-derived nitrogen, sulfur dual-doped carbon as an economical metal-free electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

The search for an economical electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a worldwide issue for fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Herein, we used cheap and available high-sulfur inferior coal as the single precursor to synthesize an N, S dual-doped carbon (NSC) metal-free electrocatalyst for the ORR. The N, S dual-doped carbon (NSC), prepared at 800 °C (NSC800), possessed a large specific surface area of 942 m² g⁻¹, with an amorphous carbon structure and more defects than the others. Furthermore, it contains 1.06 at% N and 2.24 at% S, where N is resolved into pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N, and graphitic-N. For the electrochemical behavior, NSC800 displayed a good ORR electrocatalytic activity, with the ORR peak potential at −0.245 V (vs. SCE) and half-wave potential (E_1/2) at −0.28 V (vs. SCE) in an alkaline solution. This study not only gives an original and facile method to prepare an economical ORR electrocatalyst but also provides a novel clean-use of high-sulfur inferior coal.
