Fabrication of N-Doped Porous Carbon with Micro/Mesoporous Structure from Furfural Residue for Supercapacitors

N-doping is a very useful method to improve the electrochemical performance of porous carbon (PC) materials. In this study, the potential of furfural residue (FR), a solid waste in furfural production, as a precursor to producing PC materials for supercapacitors was highlighted. To obtain an N-doped PC with a high specific surface area (SSA) and hierarchical porous structure, the urea-KOH synergistic activation method was proposed. The obtained FRPCK-Urea showed a high SSA of 1850 m2 g-1, large pore volume of 0.9973 cm3 g-1, and interconnected micro/mesoporous structure. Besides, urea can also serve as a nitrogen source, resulting in a high N content of 5.31% in FRPCK-Urea. These properties endow FRPCK-Urea with an excellent capacitance of 222.7 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 in 6 mol L-1 KOH aqueous electrolyte in a three-electrode system. The prepared FRPCK-Urea possessed a well capacitance retention at current densities from 0.5 to 20 A g-1 (81.90%) and cycle durability (96.43% after 5000 cycles), leading to FRPCK-Urea to be a potential electrode material for supercapacitors. Therefore, this work develops an effective way for the high-valued utilization of FR.

Conversion of coal into N-doped porous carbon for high-performance SO2 adsorption

The large-scale burning of coal has led to increasingly serious SO₂ environmental pollution problems. The SO₂ adsorption and removal technology based on porous carbons has the advantages of less water consumption, no secondary pollution, recycling of pollutants, and renewable utilization of adsorbents, in contrast to the wet desulfurization process. In this work, we developed a series of N-doped coal-based porous carbons (NCPCs) by calcining a mixture of anthracite, MgO, KOH and carbamide at 800 °C. Among them, the NCPC-2 sample achieves a high N-doped amount of 1.29 at%, and suitable pores with a specific surface area of 1370 m² g⁻¹ and pore volume of 0.62 cm³ g⁻¹. This N-doped porous carbon exhibits excellent SO₂ adsorption capacity as high as 115 mg g⁻¹, which is 3.47 times that of commercial coal-based activated carbon, and 2 times that of NCPC-0 without N-doping. Theoretical calculations show that the active adsorption sites of SO₂ are located at the edges and gaps of carbon materials, and surface N doping enhances the adsorption affinity of carbon materials for SO₂. In addition, the NCPCs prepared in this work are rich in raw materials and cheap, which meets the needs of industrial production, having excellent SO₂ adsorption capacity.

The abundant pores of NCPCs provides adsorption sites for SO₂. Nitrogen doping enhances the affinity energy of carbon to SO₂ but reduces the amount of pores. A moderate N-doped coal-based porous carbon achieves SO₂ capacity as high as 115 mg g⁻¹.

CoZn-ZIF-derived carbon-supported Cu catalyst for methanol oxidative carbonylation to dimethyl carbonate

Carbon materials derived from CoZn-ZIFs were used to load Cu catalysts and were applied for DMC synthesis, and the effects of the graphitization degree and the (N1 + N3)/N2 ratio were studied.

Key issues facing electrospun carbon nanofibers in energy applications: on-going approaches and challenges

Electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs), with one-dimensional (1D) morphology, tunable size, mechanical flexibility, and functionalities by themselves and those that can be added onto them, have witnessed the intensive development and extensive applications in energy storage and conversion, such as supercapacitors, batteries, and fuel cells. However, conventional solid CNFs often suffer from a rather poor electrical conductivity and low specific surface area, compared with the graphene and carbon nanotube counterparts. A well-engineered porous structure in CNFs increases their surface areas and reactivity, but there is a delicate balance between the level and type of pores and mechanical robustness. In addition, CNFs by themselves often show unsatisfactory electrochemical performance in energy storage and conversion, where, to endow them with high and durable activity, one effective approach is to dope CNFs with certain heteroatoms. Up to now, various activation strategies have been proposed and some of them have demonstrated great success in addressing these key issues. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in the issue-oriented schemes for activating the electrospun CNFs in terms of enhancing the conductivity, modulating pore configuration, doping with heteroatoms, and reinforcing mechanical strength, in close reference to their applications in supercapacitors. The basic scientific principles involved in these activation processes and their effectiveness in boosting the electrochemical performance of CNFs are examined. Finally, some of the on-going challenges and future perspectives in engineering CNFs for better performance are highlighted.

Polyacrylamide hydrogel-derived three-dimensional hierarchical porous N,S co-doped carbon frameworks for electrochemical capacitors

Polyacrylamide hydrogel-derived 3D porous hierarchical N,S co-doped carbon frameworks are purposefully fabricated, and exhibit superior electrochemical capacitance in both alkaline and acidic electrolytes.
