Cubic Mo6S8-Efficient Electrocatalyst Towards Hydrogen Evolution Over Wide pH Range

Photocatalytic Desulfurization of Thiophene with Chevrel Phase Ni2Mo6S8 Synthesized by SHS

The Chevrel phase compounds Cu4Mo6S8, Ni2Mo6S8, and Fe2Mo6S8, synthesized by self-propagating high temperature synthesis, were evaluated as photocatalysts for visible light photocatalytic desulfurization. Investigations began with reflectance measurements from which absorbance spectra were calculated using the Kubelka-Munk transformation. The absorbance data was then used to create Tauc plots to find the direct and indirect bandgaps of the Chevrel phase compounds. Bandgaps were found to be no more than the 1.74 eV for Ni2Mo6S8, so it was selected for further study because this bandgap suggests it will use the sun's emission spectrum better than the other materials studied here. Photocatalytic desulfurization experiments studied the concentration of thiophene mixed into n-octane with and without exposure to Ni2Mo6S8 with and without light exposure because of the relative difficulty of removing thiophenes from liquid fossil fuels by the industry standard hydrodesulfurization process. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy was used to analyze chemical changes in the thiophene-octane solution. Spectroscopic results demonstrate that the thiophene was effectively removed by exposure to Ni2Mo6S8 and visible light together but not by exposure to Ni2Mo6S8 or visible light alone. Multiple tests with the same Ni2Mo6S8 sample demonstrate that the material is reusable as a catalyst for photocatalytic desulfurization. The proposed mechanism results in the release of SO x species, which may be controlled and captured if separated from fossil fuels in bulk during industrial processing in contrast to their uncontrolled release as vehicle fuel exhaust. Controlled generation and collection of these species can allow for further processing into elemental sulfur in the same way that H2S released by standard hydrodesulfurization is processed into elemental S.

Synthesis of P-(NiCo)CO3 /TiO2 /Ti Self-Supported Electrode with High Catalytic Activity and Stability for Hydrogen Evolution

Hydrogen is considered an ideal clean energy due to its high mass-energy density, and only water is generated after combustion. Water electrolysis is a sustainable method of obtaining a usable amount of pure hydrogen among the various hydrogen production methods. However, its development is still limited by applying expensive noble metal catalysts. Here, the dissolution-recrystallization process of TiO2 nanotube arrays in water with the hydrothermal reaction of a typical nickel-cobalt hydroxide synthesis process followed by phosphating to prepare a self-supported electrode with (NiCo)CO3 /TiO2 heterostructure named P-(NiCo)CO3 /TiO2 /Ti electrode is combined. The electrode exhibits an ultra-low overpotential of 31 mV at 10 mA  cm-2 with a Tafel slope of 46.2 mV dec-1 in 1 m KOH and maintained its stability after running for 500 h in 1 m KOH. The excellent catalytic activity can be attributed to the structure of nanotube arrays with high specific surface area, superhydrophilicity, and super aerophobicity on the electrode surface. In addition, the uniform (NiCo)CO3 /TiO2 heterostructure also accelerates the electron transfer on the electrode surface. Finally, DFT calculations demonstrate that phosphating also improves the ΔGH* and ΔGH2O of the electrode. The synthesis strategy also promotes the exploration of catalysts for other necessary electrocatalytic fields.

Construction of stable MoxSy/CeO2 heterostructures for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

The unique structures of polynuclear Mo_xS_y clusters make it possible to maximize the number of their active sites and for them to be good candidates for HER catalysts. An appropriate support is highly necessary not only to avoid the desorption of Mo_xS_y clusters in a working environment, but also to improve their HER activity. Our work here shows that the CeO₂ support could provide strong support for interaction with various Mo_xS_y clusters and the formed Mo_xS_y/CeO₂ hetero-structures also have modest ΔG_H* for the HER. The electronic features of Mo_xS_y clusters are regulated by the CeO₂ support, which leads to charge redistribution on edge atoms and plays a key role in H adsorption. Our studies provide instructive predictions on efficient candidates of molybdenum-sulfur based catalysts for the HER.

Machine Learning Guided Synthesis of Multinary Chevrel Phase Chalcogenides

The Chevrel phase (CP) is a class of molybdenum chalcogenides that exhibit compelling properties for next-generation battery materials, electrocatalysts, and other energy applications. Despite their promise, CPs are underexplored, with only ∼100 compounds synthesized to date due to the challenge of identifying synthesizable phases. We present an interpretable machine-learned descriptor (H_δ) that rapidly and accurately estimates decomposition enthalpy (ΔH_d) to assess CP stability. To develop H_δ, we first used density functional theory to compute ΔH_d for 438 CP compositions. We then generated >560 000 descriptors with the new machine learning method SIFT, which provides an easy-to-use approach for developing accurate and interpretable chemical models. From a set of >200 000 compositions, we identified 48 501 CPs that H_δ predicts are synthesizable based on the criterion that ΔH_d < 65 meV/atom, which was obtained as a statistical boundary from 67 experimentally synthesized CPs. The set of candidate CPs includes 2307 CP tellurides, an underexplored CP subset with a predicted preference for channel site occupation by cation intercalants that is rare among CPs. We successfully synthesized five of five novel CP tellurides attempted from this set and confirmed their preference for channel site occupation. Our joint computational and experimental approach for developing and validating screening tools that enable the rapid identification of synthesizable materials within a sparse class is likely transferable to other materials families to accelerate their discovery.

Transition Metal Chalcogenides as a Versatile and Tunable Platform for Catalytic CO2 and N2 Electroreduction

Group VI transition metal chalcogenides are the subject of increasing research interest for various electrochemical applications such as low-temperature water electrolysis, batteries, and supercapacitors due to their high activity, chemical stability, and the strong correlation between structure and electrochemical properties. Particularly appealing is their utilization as electrocatalysts for the synthesis of energy vectors and value-added chemicals such as C-based chemicals from the CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂R) or ammonia from the nitrogen fixation reaction (NRR). This review discusses the role of structural and electronic properties of transition metal chalcogenides in enhancing selectivity and activity toward these two key reduction reactions. First, we discuss the morphological and electronic structure of these compounds, outlining design strategies to control and fine-tune them. Then, we discuss the role of the active sites and the strategies developed to enhance the activity of transition metal chalcogenide-based catalysts in the framework of CO₂R and NRR against the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); leveraging on the design rules applied for HER applications, we discuss their future perspective for the applications in CO₂R and NRR. For these two reactions, we comprehensively review recent progress in unveiling reaction mechanisms at different sites and the most effective strategies for fabricating catalysts that, by exploiting the structural and electronic peculiarities of transition metal chalcogenides, can outperform many metallic compounds. Transition metal chalcogenides outperform state-of-the-art catalysts for CO₂ to CO reduction in ionic liquids due to the favorable CO₂ adsorption on the metal edge sites, whereas the basal sites, due to their conformation, represent an appealing design space for reduction of CO₂ to complex carbon products. For the NRR instead, the resemblance of transition metal chalcogenides to the active centers of nitrogenase enzymes represents a powerful nature-mimicking approach for the design of catalysts with enhanced performance, although strategies to hinder the HER must be integrated in the catalytic architecture.

Stabilizing Hydrogen Adsorption through Theory-Guided Chalcogen Substitution in Chevrel-Phase Mo6X8 (X=S, Se, Te) Electrocatalysts

In this work, we implement a facile microwave-assisted synthesis method to yield three binary Chevrel-Phase chalcogenides (Mo₆X₈; X = S, Se, Te) and investigate the effect of increasing chalcogen electronegativity on hydrogen evolution catalytic activity. Density functional theory predictions indicate that increasing chalcogen electronegativity in these materials will yield a favorable electronic structure for proton reduction. This is confirmed experimentally via X-ray absorption spectroscopy as well as traditional electrochemical analysis. We have identified that increasing the electronegativity of X in Mo₆X₈ increases the hydrogen adsorption strength owing to a favorable shift in the p-band position as well as an increase in the Lewis basicity of the chalcogen, thereby improving hydrogen evolution reaction energetics. We find that Mo₆S₈ exhibits the highest hydrogen evolution activity of the Mo₆X₈ series of catalysts, requiring an overpotential of 321 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm^-2_ECSA, a Tafel slope of 74 mV per decade, and an exchange current density of 6.01 × 10^-4 mA cm^-2_ECSA. Agreement between theory and experiment in this work indicates that the compositionally tunable Chevrel-Phase chalcogenide family is a promising framework for which electronic structure can be predictably modified to improve catalytic small-molecule reduction reactivity.
