Fabrication of anode-supported microtubular solid oxide fuel cells by sequential dip-coating and reduced sintering steps

A High-Strength Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Supported by an Ordered Porous Cathode Membrane

The phase inversion tape casting has been widely used to fabricate open straight porous supports for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which can offer better gas transmission and minimize the concentration polarization. However, the overall weak strength of the macro-porous structure still limits the applications of these SOFCs. In this work, a novel SOFC supported by an ordered porous cathode membrane with a four-layer configuration containing a finger-like porous 3 mol% yttria- stabilized zirconia (3YSZ)-La0.8Sr0.2Co0.6Fe0.4O3-δ (LSCF) catalyst, porous 8 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ)-LSCF catalyst, and dense 8YSZ porous 8YSZ-NiO catalyst is successfully prepared by the phase inversion tape casting, dip-coating, co-sintering, and impregnation process. The flexural strength of the open straight porous 3YSZ membrane is as high as 131.95 MPa, which meets the requirement for SOFCs. The cathode-supported single cell shows a peak power density of 540 mW cm-2 at 850 °C using H2 as the fuel. The degradation mechanism of the SOFC is investigated by the combination of microstructure characterization and distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis.

Fabrication and Performance of Micro-Tubular Solid Oxide Cells

Solid Oxide Cells (SOC) are the kind of electrochemical devices that provide reversible, dual mode operation, where electricity is generated in a fuel cell mode and fuel is produced in an electrolysis mode. Our current work encompasses the design, fabrication, and performance analysis of a micro-tubular reversible SOC that is prepared through a single dip-coating technique with multiple dips using conventional materials. Electrochemical impedance and current-voltage responses were monitored from 700 to 800 °C. Maximum power densities of the cell achieved at 800, 750, and 700 °C, was 690, 546, and 418 mW cm−2, respectively. The reversible, dual mode operation of the SOC was evaluated by operating the cell using 50% H2O/H2 and ambient air. Accordingly, when the SOC was operated in the electrolysis mode at 1.3 V (the thermo-neutral voltage for steam electrolysis), current densities of −311, −487 and −684 mA cm−2 at 700, 750 and 800 °C, respectively, were observed. Hydrogen production rate was determined based on the current developed in the cell during the electrolysis operation. The stability of the cell was further evaluated by performing multiple transitions between fuel cell mode and electrolysis mode at 700 °C for a period of 500 h. In the stability test, the cell current decreased from 353 mA cm−2 to 243 mA cm−2 in the fuel cell mode operation at 0.7 V, while the same decreased from −250 mA cm−2 to −115 mA cm−2 in the electrolysis operation at 1.3 V.

Chemical Vapour Deposition of Scandia-Stabilised Zirconia Layers on Tubular Substrates at Low Temperatures

The paper presents results of investigation on synthesis of non-porous ZrO₂-Sc₂O₂ layers on tubular substrates by MOCVD (metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) method using Sc(tmhd)₃ (Tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)scandium(III), 99%) and Zr(tmhd)₄ (Tetrakis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)zirconium)(IV), 99.9+%) as basic reactants. The molar content of Sc(tmhd)₃ in the gas mixture was as follows: 14, 28%. The synthesis temperature was in the range of 600–700 °C. The value of extended Gr_x/Re_x² expression (Gr-Grashof number, Re-Reynolds number and x-the distance from the gas inflow point) was less than 0.01. The layers were deposited under reduced pressure or close to atmospheric pressure. The layers obtained were tested using scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS) microanalyzer, X-ray diffractometer and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The layers deposited were non-porous, amorphous or nanocrystalline with controlled chemical composition. The layers synthesized at 700 °C were nanocrystalline. ZrO₂-Sc₂O₃ layers with 14 mol.% Sc₂O₃ content had a rhombohedral structure.
