3D-ordered porous nitrogen and sulfur Co-Doped carbon supported PdCuW nanoparticles as efficient catalytic cathode materials for Li-O 2 batteries

Graphene Nanosheet-Wrapped Mesoporous La0.8Ce0.2Fe0.5Mn0.5O3 Perovskite Oxide Composite for Improved Oxygen Reaction Electro-Kinetics and Li-O2 Battery Application

A novel design and synthesis methodology is the most important consideration in the development of a superior electrocatalyst for improving the kinetics of oxygen electrode reactions, such as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in Li-O₂ battery application. Herein, we demonstrate a glycine-assisted hydrothermal and probe sonication method for the synthesis of a mesoporous spherical La_0.8Ce_0.2Fe_0.5Mn_0.5O₃ perovskite particle and embedded graphene nanosheet (LCFM(8255)-gly/GNS) composite and evaluate its bifunctional ORR/OER kinetics in Li-O₂ battery application. The physicochemical characterization confirms that the as-formed LCFM(8255)-gly perovskite catalyst has a highly crystalline structure and mesoporous morphology with a large specific surface area. The LCFM(8255)-gly/GNS composite hybrid structure exhibits an improved onset potential and high current density toward ORR/OER in both aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes. The LCFM(8255)-gly/GNS composite cathode (ca. 8475 mAh g⁻¹) delivers a higher discharge capacity than the La_0.5Ce_0.5Fe_0.5Mn_0.5O₃-gly/GNS cathode (ca. 5796 mAh g⁻¹) in a Li-O₂ battery at a current density of 100 mA g⁻¹. Our results revealed that the composite’s high electrochemical activity comes from the synergism of highly abundant oxygen vacancies and redox-active sites due to the Ce and Fe dopant in LaMnO₃ and the excellent charge transfer characteristics of the graphene materials. The as-developed cathode catalyst performed appreciable cycle stability up to 55 cycles at a limited capacity of 1000 mAh g⁻¹ based on conventional glass fiber separators.

One-pot synthesis of N,S-doped pearl chain tube-loaded Ni3S2 composite materials for high-performance lithium-air batteries

To improve the high reversibility of lithium-air batteries, an air electrode needs to have excellent electrochemical performance and spatial structure. Ni3S2 nanoparticles are loaded onto an N,S-doped pearl chain tube (N,S-PCT) by a method called quasi-chemical vapor deposition (Q-CVD). Additionally, N and S are doped during the synthesis process, thereby forming an ideal pipe rack-like structure. The large amount of space in the tube rack can provide sufficient storage to act as a buffer for the discharge products, and the interconnected tubes can effectively promote the dispersion of O2 and electrolyte. The addition of Ni3S2 nanoparticles effectively reduces the charge transfer resistance, thereby increasing the electron mobility of the cathode. Ni3S2@N,S-PCT cathodes effectively improve the cycling and high-rate performance of lithium-air batteries, demonstrating an ultrahigh discharge capacity of 16 733.7 mA h g-1 at a current density of 400 mA g-1 and an ultrahigh discharge capacity of 5088.1 mA h g-1 at a current density of 1000 mA g-1. When the cut-off capacity is 1000 mA h g-1, the battery with the Ni3S2@N,S-PCT-800 electrode can achieve cycling stability for 148 cycles. This research provides a new solution for the design of lithium-air batteries with high electrocatalytic performance.

Thermally reduced mesoporous manganese MOF @reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite as bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction and evolution

Oxygen electrocatalysis plays a crucial role in harnessing energy from modern renewable energy technologies like fuel cells and metal–air batteries. But high cost and stability issues of noble metal catalysts call for research on tailoring novel metal–organic framework (MOF) based architectures which can bifunctionally catalyze O₂ reduction and evolution reactions (ORR & OER). In this work, we report a novel manganese MOF @rGO nanocomposite synthesized using a facile self-templated solvothermal method. The nanocomposite is superior to commercial Pt/C catalyst both in material resource and effectiveness in application. A more positive cathodic peak (E_pc = 0.78 V vs. RHE), onset (E_onset = 1.09 V vs. RHE) and half wave potentials (E_1/2 = 0.98 V vs. RHE) for the ORR and notable potential to achieve the threshold current density (E_{@10 mA cm⁻²}= 1.84 V vs. RHE) for OER are features promising to reduce overpotentials during ORR and OER. Small Tafel slopes, methanol tolerance and acceptable short term stability augment the electrocatalytic properties of the as-prepared nanocomposite. Remarkable electrocatalytic features are attributed to the synergistic effect from the mesoporous 3D framework and transition metal–organic composition. Template directed growth, tunable porosities, novel architecture and excellent electrocatalytic performance of the manganese MOF @rGO nanocomposite make it an excellent candidate for energy applications.

Heterostructured CoO-Co3O4 nanoparticles anchored on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres as cathode catalysts for Li-O2 batteries

Lithium-oxygen batteries have received extensive attention due to their high theoretical energy density and environmental friendliness. Herein, CoO-Co3O4 nanoparticles coated on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres (N-HC@CoO-Co3O4) are prepared by a simple method, and N-HC@CoO-Co3O4 when used as the cathode material for a lithium-oxygen battery shows high catalytic performance. The nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres not only ensure an ultra-high specific surface area for the accommodation of the Li2O2 discharge products but also provide more reactive sites. CoO-Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on the surface of the nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres can effectively catalyze the formation and decomposition of worm-like Li2O2. The batteries assembled with N-HC@CoO-Co3O4 catalysts exhibit reduced overpotential, improved cycling performance, and high rate capability. Ultra-high discharge capacities of 24 265 mA h g-1 at a current density of 300 mA g-1 and 3622 mA h g-1 at a current density of 1000 mA g-1 are obtained. With a cutoff capacity of 500 mA h g-1, the battery with an N-HC@CoO-Co3O4 electrode can reach more than 112 cycles. This research offers new insights into the design of heterostructured oxide catalysts for Li-O2 batteries.

The State of Research Regarding Ordered Mesoporous Materials in Batteries

Ordered mesoporous materials, porous materials with a pore size of 2-50 nm which are prepared via the sol-gel process using surfactant molecular aggregates as a template to assemble channels through the interfacial action of organic and inorganic substances, have recently triggered a heated debate. In addition to applications in the catalytic cracking of heavy oils and residues, the manufacturing of graft materials, the purification of water, the conversion of automobile exhaust, biochips, and the treatment of environmental pollutants via photocatalysts, ordered mesoporous materials have drawn substantial attention in the field of electrochemical energy storage due to advantages such as large specific surface area, uniform and continuously adjustable pore size, and orderly arrangement. Here, a general summary and appraisal of the study of ordered mesoporous materials for batteries in recent years is given, including the synthesis methods, meso/nanostructural features, and electrochemical capabilities of such materials.
