Synthetic strategy and evaluation of hierarchical nanoporous NiO/NiCoP microspheres as efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction

Template-assisted Fabrication of O-doped CoP Microflowers with Optimal Electronic Modulation for Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

Exploring efficient, affordable and stable electrocatalyst toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great scientific significance for the practical implementation of the water splitting. The heteroatom doping represents a serviceable strategy to further elevate the catalytic performance for a transition metal-based electrocatalyst because of the electronic regulation effect. Herein, a reliable self-sacrificial template-engaged approach is proposed to synthesize O-doped CoP (denoted as O-CoP) microflowers, which simultaneously considers the regualtion of electronic configuration via anion doping and sufficient exposure of active sites via nanostructure engineering. The suitable O incorporation content in CoP matrix could tremendously modify the electronic configuration, accelerate the charge transfer, promote the exposure of active sites, strengthen the electrical conductivity, and adjust the adsorption state of H*. Consequently, the optimized O-CoP microflowers with optimal O concentration display a remarkable HER property with a small overpotential of 125 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA cm-2 , a low Tafel slope of 68 mV dec-1 and long-term durability for 32 h under alkaline electrolyte, manifesting a considerable potential application for hydrogen production at large scale. The integration of anion incorporation and architecture engineering in this work will bring in a depth insight for the design of low-cost and effective electrocatalysts in energy conversion and storage systems.

Constructing interface engineering and tailoring a nanoflower-like FeP/CoP heterostructure for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

The inexpensive and highly efficient electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting electrolysis have displayed promising practical applications to relieve energy crisis. Herein, we prepared a high-yield and structurally regulated bimetallic cobalt-iron phosphide electrocatalyst by a facile one-pot hydrothermal reaction and subsequent low-temperature phosphating treatment. The tailoring of nanoscale morphology was achieved by varying the input ratio and phosphating temperature. Thus, an optimized FeP/CoP-1-350 sample with the ultra-thin nanosheets assembled into a nanoflower-like structure was obtained. FeP/CoP-1-350 heterostructure displayed remarkable activity toward the OER with a low overpotential of 276 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, and a low Tafel slope of only 37.71 mV dec^-1. Long-lasting durability and stability were maintained with the current with almost no obvious fluctuation. The enhanced OER activity was attributed to the presence of copious active sites from the ultra-thin nanosheets, the interface between CoP and FeP components, and the synergistic effect of Fe-Co elements in the FeP/CoP heterostructure. This study provides a feasible strategy to fabricate highly efficient and cost-effective bimetallic phosphide electrocatalysts.

Self-supporting CoP-C nanosheet arrays derived from a metal-organic framework as synergistic catalysts for efficient water splitting

Here, a new strategy that combines accessible active sites and multiphase synergy in a simple process is developed for constructing bifunctional electrocatalysts toward overall water splitting. By using metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets hydrothermally grown on pre-oxidized nickel foam (denoted by Co₂(OH)₂(BDC)/NiO/NF) as a precursor, two novel heterogeneous nanosheet arrays including a cobalt phosphide nanoparticle embedded carbon nanotube nanosheet array supported by phosphorized nickel foam (denoted by CoP-CNT/Ni₂P/NF) and a cobalt phosphide nanorod decorated carbon nanosheet array supported by oxidized nickel foam (denoted by CoP-C/NiO/NF) are prepared. Both were confirmed to be highly efficient for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. In particular, CoP-C/NiO/NF exhibits higher catalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (η₁₀₀ = -131 mV), promoted by the synergy of oxidized nickel foam. CoP-CNT/Ni₂P/NF performs better in the oxygen evolution reaction (η₅₀ = 301 mV), benefiting mainly from its improved electrochemically active surface area. The two catalysts match well in overall water splitting with satisfactory activity (η₁₀ = 1.57 V) and stability when directly applied in a two-electrode cell. This method will bring new inspiration to maximize the electrocatalytic efficiency of MOF-derived catalysts for energy conversion applications in the future.

Trace Amount of NiP2 Cooperative CoMoP Nanosheets Inducing Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

As a very attractive clean energy, hydrogen has a high energy density and great potential to achieve zero pollution emission. Therefore, the preparation of hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts with excellent performance is an urgent task to ameliorate the global energy shortage and environmental pollution. Here, a trace amount of NiP₂ coupled with CoMoP nanosheets (NCMP) was synthesized by the one-step hydrothermal method and low-temperature phosphidation. Studies have found that although the dosage of NiP₂ is very low, its appearance has been efficient to improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of CoMoP, which may be induced by the synergistic effect of the two different components NiP₂ and CoMoP. To find the superior catalyst, the effect of Ni content on the catalyst performance is also studied, and it is found that when the dosage of Ni is 0.02 mM, NCMP-2 (2 means 0.02 mM) displays the most outstanding overpotential (10 mA cm^-2) of 46 mV.

Hydrogen adsorption trends on two metal-doped Ni2P surfaces for optimal catalyst design

In this study, we looked at the hydrogen evolution reaction on the doubly doped Ni3P2 terminated Ni2P surface. Two Ni atoms in the first three layers of the Ni2P surface model were exchanged with two transition metal atoms. We limited our investigation to combinations of Al, Co, and Fe based on their individual effectiveness as Ni2P dopants in our previous computational studies. The DFT calculated hydrogen adsorption free energy was employed as a predictor of the materials' catalytic HER activity. Our results indicate that the combination of Co and Fe dopants most improves the catalytic activity of the surface through the creation of multiple novel and active catalytic sites.

Selective Phosphorization Boosting High-Performance NiO/Ni2Co4P3 Microspheres as Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Phosphorization of metal oxides/hydoxides to promote electronic conductivity as a promising strategy has attracted enormous attention for improving the electrochemical properties of anode material in lithium ion batteries. For this article, selective phosphorization from NiCo₂O₄ to NiO/Ni₂Co₄P₃ microspheres was realized as an efficient route to enhance the electrochemical lithium storage properties of bimetal Ni-Co based anode materials. The results show that varying phosphorizaed reagent amount can significantly affect the transformation of crystalline structure from NiCo₂O₄ to intermediate NiO, hybrid NiO/Ni₂Co₄P₃, and, finally, to Ni₂Co₄P₃, during which alterated sphere morphology, shifted surface valance, and enhanced lithium-ion storage behavior are detected. The optimized phosphorization with 1:3 reagent mass ratio can maintain the spherical architecture, hold hybrid crystal structure, and improve the reversibly electrochemical lithium-ion storage properties. A specific capacity of 415 mAh g⁻¹ is achieved at 100 mA g⁻¹ specific current and maintains at 106 mAh g⁻¹ when the specific current increases to 5000 mA g⁻¹. Even after 200 cycles at 500 mA g⁻¹, the optimized electrode still delivers 224 mAh g⁻¹ of specific capacity, exhibiting desirable cycling stability. We believe that understanding of such selective phosphorization can further evoke a particular research enthusiasm for anode materials in lithium ion battery with high performances.
