Ni–P and TiO2 codeposition on silk textile via supercritical CO2 promoted electroless plating for flexible and wearable photocatalytic devices

Platinum Metallization of Polyethylene Terephthalate by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Catalyzation and the Tensile Fracture Strength

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is known to be highly inert, and this makes it difficult to be metallized. In addition, Pt electroless plating is rarely reported in the metallization of polymers. In this study, the metallization of biocompatible Pt metal is realized by supercritical CO₂ (sc-CO₂)-assisted electroless plating. The catalyst precursor used in the sc-CO₂ catalyzation step is an organometallic compound, palladium (II) acetylacetonate (Pd(acac)₂). The electrical resistance is evaluated, and a tape adhesion test is utilized to demonstrate intactness of the Pt layer on the PET film. The electrical resistance of the Pt/PET with 60 min of the Pt deposition time remains at a low level of 1.09 Ω after the adhesion test, revealing positive effects of the sc-CO₂ catalyzation step. A tensile test is conducted to evaluate the mechanical strength of the Pt/PET. In-situ electrical resistances of the specimen are monitored during the tensile test. The fracture strength is determined from the stress value when the short circuit occurred. The fracture strength is 33.9 MPa for a specimen with 30 min of the Pt deposition time. As the Pt deposition time increases to 45 min and 60 min, the fracture strengths reach 52.3 MPa and 65.9 MPa, respectively. The promoted fracture strength and the decent electrical conductivity demonstrate the advantages toward biomedical devices.

Silk Fiber Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube-Based Micro-/Nanofiber Composite as a Conductive Fiber and a Force Sensor

Silk cocoon fibers (SFs) are natural polymers that are made up of fibroin protein. These natural fibers have higher mechanical stability and good elasticity properties. In this work, we coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the surface of SFs using a simple stirring technique with vinegar as the medium. This SF-MWCNT micro-/nanofiber composite was prepared without any adhesives. The characterization results revealed that the SF-MWCNT micro-/nanofiber composite exhibited excellent electrical conductivity (995 Ω cm^-1), tensile strength (up to 200% greater elongation), and durability characteristics. In addition, this micro-/nanofiber composite shows a change in resistance from 1450 to 960 Ω cm^-1 for an applied mechanical force of 0.3-1 N kg^-1. Based on our findings, SF-MWCNT micro-/nanofiber composite-based conductive fibers (CFs) and force sensors (FSs) were developed.

Surface Decoration of Cetyltrimethyl Ammonium Bromide on SiC Particles and Its Effects on the Co-Deposition Process

Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) is used to decorate the SiC particle surface. The mechanism of the decoration process has been studied by simulation and experimental approaches. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation finds a bilayer adsorbed structure of CTAB on the SiC particles, which is then verified by Fourier-transform infrared and thermal gravimetric analysis measurements. The MD simulation also finds that the decorative effects of CTAB on the SiC particle surface are related to the surface charge condition of the SiC particles and the concentration of CTAB. The measured zeta potential of the SiC particles shows dependence on the pH condition and the concentration of CTAB. The decorated SiC particles are used to produce composition by the co-deposition technology. With the help of CTAB, SiC particles are successfully incorporated in the deposited layer, where the content of SiC particles is dependent on the concentration of CTAB and the pH of the bath.

Silk Fibroin-Based Materials for Catalyst Immobilization

Silk fibroin is a widely and commercially available natural protein derived from silkworm cocoons. Thanks to its unique amino acid composition and structure, which lead to localized nanoscale pockets with limited but sufficient hydration for protein interaction and stabilization, silk fibroin has been studied in the field of enzyme immobilization. Results of these studies have demonstrated that silk fibroin offers an important platform for covalent and noncovalent immobilization of enzymes through serving as a stabilization matrix/support with high retention of the biological activity of the enzymes of interest. In the hope of providing suggestions for potential future research directions, this review has been written to briefly introduce and summarize key advances in silk fibroin-based materials for immobilization of both enzymes/biocatalysts (including alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase, glucose oxidase, lipase, urease, uricase, horseradish peroxidase, catalase, xanthine oxidase, tyrosinase, acetylcholinesterase, neutral protease, α-chymotrypsin, amylase, organophosphorus hydrolase, β-galactosidase, carbonic anhydrase, laccase, zymolyase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, thymidine kinase, and several others) and non-enzymatic catalysts (such as Au, Pd, Fe, α-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, TiO2, Pt, ZnO, CuO, Cu2O, Mn3O4, and MnO2).
