Extracting the kinetic parameters of the hydrogen evolution reaction at Pt in acidic media by means of dynamic multi-frequency analysis

Spontaneous Decoration of Ultrasmall Pt Nanoparticles on Size-Separated MoS2 Nanosheets

Liquid exfoliation can be considered as a viable approach for the scalable production of 2D materials due to its various benefits, although the polydispersity in the obtained nanosheet size hinders their straightforward incorporation. Size-separation can help alleviate these concerns, however a correlation between nanosheet size and property needs to be established to bring about size-specific applicability. Herein, size-selected aqueous nanosheet dispersions have been obtained via centrifugation-based protocols, and their chemical activity in the spontaneous reduction of chloroplatinic acid is investigated. Growth of ultrasmall Pt nanoparticles was achieved on nanosheet surfaces without a need for reducing agents, and stark differences in the nanoparticle coverage were observed as a function of nanosheet size. Defects in the nanosheets were probed via Raman spectroscopy, and correlated to the observed size-activity. Additionally, the effect of reaction temperature during synthesis was investigated. The electrochemical activity of the ultrasmall Pt nanoparticle decorated MoS2 nanosheets was evaluated for the hydrogen evolution reaction, and enhancement in performance was observed with nanosheet size, and nanoparticle decoration density. These findings shine light on the significance of nanosheet size in controlling spontaneous reduction reactions, and provide a deeper insight to intrinsic properties of liquid exfoliated nanosheets.

Research on engineered electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting: a comprehensive review

Water electrolysis plays an interesting role toward hydrogen generation for overcoming global environmental crisis and solving the energy storage problem. However, there is still a deficiency of efficient electrocatalysts to overcome sluggish kinetics for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Great efforts have been employed to produce potential catalysts with low overpotential, rapid kinetics, and excellent stability for HER and OER. At present, hydrogen economy is driven by electrocatalysts with excellent characteristics; thus, systematic design strategy has become the driving force to exploit earth-abundant transition metal-based electrocatalysts toward H₂ economy. In this review, the recent progress on newer materials including metals, alloys, and transition metal oxides (manganese oxides, cobalt oxides, nickel oxides, PBA-derived metal oxides, and metal complexes) as photocatalysts/electrocatalysts has been overviewed together with some methodologies for efficient water splitting. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrocatalysts have been highly exploited owing to their interesting functionalities. The photovoltaic-electrocatalytic (PV-EC) process focused on harvesting high solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (STH) among various solar energy conversion as well as storage systems. Electrocatalysts/photocatalysts with high efficiency have become an urgent need for overall water splitting. Also, cutting-edge achievements in the fabrication of electrocatalysts along with theoretical consideration have been discussed.

Estimation and correction of instrument artefacts in dynamic impedance spectra

Dynamic impedance spectroscopy is one of the most powerful techniques in the qualitative and quantitative mechanistic studies of electrochemical systems, as it allows for time-resolved investigation and dissection of various physicochemical processes occurring at different time scales. However, due to high-frequency artefacts connected to the non-ideal behaviour of the instrumental setup, dynamic impedance spectra can lead to wrong interpretation and/or extraction of wrong kinetic parameters. These artefacts arise from the non-ideal behaviour of the voltage and current amplifier (I/E converters) and stray capacitance. In this paper, a method for the estimation and correction of high-frequency artefacts arising from non-ideal behaviour of instrumental setup will be discussed. Using resistors, \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$[\hbox {Fe(CN)}_6]^{3-/4-}$$\end{document}[Fe(CN)6]3-/4- redox couple and nickel hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles, the effect of high-frequency artefacts will be investigated and the extraction of the impedance of the system from the measured dynamic impedance is proposed. It is shown that the correction allows acquiring proper dynamic impedance spectra at frequencies higher than the bandwidth of the potentiostat, and simultaneously acquire high precision cyclic voltammetry.

A nanostructured MoO2/MoS2/MoP heterojunction electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Electrocatalytic production of hydrogen from water is considered to be a promising and sustainable strategy. In this work, the low-cost nanostructured MoO₂/MoS₂/MoP heterojunction is successfully synthesized by phosphorization of the pre-prepared urchin-like MoO₂/MoS₂ nanospheres as the stable, highly efficient electrocatalysis for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The MoO₂/MoS₂/MoP-800 (MoO₂/MoS₂ nanospheres are phosphated at 800 °C) displays a catalytic ability for the HER with an overpotential of 135 mV to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 67 mV dec^-1 in 0.5 M H₂SO₄, which is superior to MoO₂/MoS₂ nanospheres (200 °C; 24 h), MoO₂/MoS₂/MoP-700 (MoO₂/MoS₂ nanospheres are phosphated at 700 °C) and MoO₂/MoS₂/MoP-900 (MoO₂/MoS₂ nanospheres are phosphated at 900 °C). Meanwhile, the catalyst exhibits superior properties for HER with an overpotential of 145 mV to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 71 mV dec^-1 in 1 M KOH solution. Detailed characterizations reveal that the improved HER performances are significantly related to P-doping and the spherical nanostructure. This work not only provides a low-cost selective for electrocatalytic production of hydrogen, but also serves as a guide to optimize the composition and structure of nanocomposites.

What is the trigger for the hydrogen evolution reaction? - towards electrocatalysis beyond the Sabatier principle

The mechanism of the hydrogen evolution reaction, although intensively studied for more than a century, remains a fundamental scientific challenge. Many important questions are still open, making it elusive to establish rational principles for electrocatalyst design. In this work, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to identify which dynamic phenomena at the electrified interface are prerequisite for the formation of molecular hydrogen. In fact, what we observe as an onset of the macroscopic faradaic current originates from dynamic structural changes in the double layer, which are entropic in nature. Based on careful analysis of the activation process, an electrocatalytic descriptor is introduced, evaluated and experimentally confirmed. The catalytic activity descriptor is named as the potential of minimum entropy. The experimentally verified catalytic descriptor reveals significant potential to yield innovative insights for the design of catalytically active materials and interfaces.

Dynamic Impedance Spectroscopy of Nickel Hexacyanoferrate Thin Films

Dynamic multi-frequency analysis (DMFA) is capable of acquiring high-quality frequency response of electrochemical systems under non-stationary conditions in a broad range of frequencies. In this work, we used DMFA to study the kinetics of (de-)intercalation of univalent cations (Na+ and K+) in thin films of nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) during cyclic voltammetry. For this system, the classic stationary electrochemical impedance spectroscopy fails due to the instability of the oxidized form of NiHCF. We are showing that such spectra can be fitted with a physical model described by a simple two-step intercalation mechanism: an adsorption step followed by an insertion step. The extracted kinetic parameters are depending on the state of charge as well on the nature of the inserted cation.
