Highly reversible crystal transformation of anodized porous V2O5 nanostructures for wide potential window high-performance supercapacitors

3,6-Dimethoxythieno[3,2-b]thiophene-Based Bifunctional Electrodes for High-Performance Electrochromic Supercapacitors Prepared by One-Step Electrodeposition

An integrated visual energy system consisting of conjugated polymer electrodes is promising for combining electrochromism with energy storage. In this work, we obtained copolymer bifunctional electrodes poly(3,6-dimethoxythieno[3,2-b]thiophene-co-2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-3-ylmethanol)(P(TT-OMe-co-EDTM)) by one-step electrochemical copolymerization, which exhibits favorable electrochromic and capacitive energy storage properties. Because of the synergistic effect of PTT-OMe and PEDTM, the prepared copolymers show better flexibility. Moreover, the morphology and electrochemical properties of the copolymers could be adjusted by depositing different molar ratios of 3,6-dimethoxythieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT-OMe) and 2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4] dioxin-3-ylmethanol (EDTM). The P(TT-OMe-co-EDTM) electrodes realized a high specific capacitance (190 F/g at 5 mV/s) and recognizable color conversion. This work provides a novel and simple way to synergistically improve electrochromic and energy storage properties and develop thiophene-based conducting polymers for electrochromic energy storage devices.

A multi-chromic supercapacitor of high coloration efficiency integrating a MOF-derived V2O5 electrode

Modern technological trends in smart electronic devices demand more intelligent automation. Simultaneous integration of energy storage and multicolor electrochromism in a single device improves user-device interfacing based on a salient human-readable output. In this work, primarily metal-organic framework (MOF) derived V₂O₅ was synthesized which, as an electrochromic material, shows high optical modulation of 35% at 485 nm, with very fast switching speeds (2.9/3.4 s for coloring/bleaching). The multiple coloration states of the V₂O₅ electrode make it worthy for further integration as a smart negative electrode in a multicolored electrochromic asymmetric supercapacitor, where the electrochromic polyaniline electrode serves as the counter electrode. The device demonstrates a high coloration efficiency of 137.2 cm² C^-1 and an areal capacitance of 12.27 mF cm^-2 and an energy density of 2.21 × 10^-3 mW h cm^-2 at a current density of 0.05 mA cm^-2. By virtue of its different chromatic states during charging and discharging, smart visual tracking of the state of charge of the supercapacitor can be realized. Such a design of energy storage devices will have promising practical application in futuristic smart multifunctional electronic devices.

Recent Development in Vanadium Pentoxide and Carbon Hybrid Active Materials for Energy Storage Devices

With the increasing energy demand for portable electronics, electric vehicles, and green energy storage solutions, the development of high-performance supercapacitors has been at the forefront of energy storage and conversion research. In the past decade, many scientific publications have been dedicated to designing hybrid electrode materials composed of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) and carbon nanomaterials to bridge the gap in energy and power of traditional batteries and capacitors. V2O5 is a promising electrode material owing to its natural abundance, nontoxicity, and high capacitive potential. However, bulk V2O5 is limited by poor conductivity, low porosity, and dissolution during charge/discharge cycles. To overcome the limitations of V2O5, many researchers have incorporated common carbon nanostructures such as reduced graphene oxides, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, and other carbon moieties into V2O5. The carbon components facilitate electron mobility and act as porous templates for V2O5 nucleation with an enhanced surface area as well as interconnected surface morphology and structural stability. This review discusses the development of various V2O5/carbon hybrid materials, focusing on the effects of different synthesis methods, V2O5/carbon compositions, and physical treatment strategies on the structure and electrochemical performance of the composite material as promising supercapacitor electrodes.

Revisiting anodic alumina templates: from fabrication to applications

Anodic porous alumina, -AAO- (also known as nanoporous alumina, nanohole alumina arrays, -NAA- or nanoporous anodized alumina platforms, -NAAP-) has opened new opportunities in a wide range of fields, and is used as an advanced photonic structure for applications in structural coloration and advanced optical biosensing based on the ordered nanoporous structure obtained and as a template to grow nanowires or nanotubes of different materials giving rise to metamaterials with tailored properties. Therefore, understanding the structure of nanoporous anodic alumina templates and knowing how they are fabricated provide a tool for the further design of structures based on them, such as 3D nanoporous structures developed recently. In this work, we review the latest developments related to nanoporous alumina, which is currently a very active field, to provide a solid and thorough reference for all interested experts, both in academia and industry, on these nanostructured and highly useful structures. We present an overview of theories on the formation of pores and self-ordering in alumina, paying special attention to those presented in recent years, and different nanostructures that have been developed recently. Therefore, a wide variety of architectures, ranging from ordered nanoporous structures to diameter changing pores, branched pores, and 3D nanostructures will be discussed. Next, some of the most relevant results using different nanostructured morphologies as templates for the growth of different materials with novel properties and reduced dimensionality in magnetism, thermoelectricity, etc. will be summarised, showing how these structures have influenced the state of the art in a wide variety of fields. Finally, a review on how these anodic aluminium membranes are used as platforms for different applications combined with optical techniques, together with principles behind these applications will be presented, in addition to a hint on the future applications of these versatile nanomaterials. In summary, this review is focused on the most recent developments, without neglecting the basis and older studies that have led the way to these findings. Thus, it gives an updated state-of-the-art review that should be useful not only for experts in the field, but also for non-specialists, helping them to gain a broad understanding of the importance of anodic porous alumina, and most probably, endow them with new ideas for its use in fields of interest or even developing the anodization technique.
