Hierarchical NiSe@Ni nanocone arrays electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Self-supported Ni3S2@Ni2P/MoS2 heterostructures on nickel foam for an outstanding oxygen evolution reaction and efficient overall water splitting

Hydrogen production by electrocatalytic water splitting is a pollution-free, energy-saving, and efficient method. The low efficiency of hydrogen production, high overpotentials and expensive noble-metal catalysts have limited the development of hydrogen production from electrocatalytic water splitting. Therefore, the exploration of bifunctional electrocatalysts for water overall splitting to produce hydrogen is of profound significance. Herein, Ni₃S₂@Ni₂P/MoS₂ heterostructure electrocatalysts were synthesized on Ni foam through an environmentally friendly hydrothermal method and low-temperature phosphating method. The synergistic effects between different components and the mutual substitution principle between sulfur atoms and phosphorus atoms greatly improve the OER performance of the electrocatalyst. It is also an effective strategy to optimize the adsorption energies of intermediates by the design of heterostructured catalysts composed of multiple substances. Ni₃S₂@Ni₂P/MoS₂ only requires a low overpotential (η₁₀) of 175 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH solution and the stable duration exceeds 40 h. In addition, this heterogeneous structure is assembled into an electrolytic cell for overall water splitting, which exhibits a low cell voltage of 1.61 volts and retains the robust stability over 30 h at 10 mA cm^-2. The Ni₃S₂@Ni₂P/MoS₂ heterostructure prepared in this research provides a strategy for exploring other heterostructured electrocatalysts with different components.

Recent advances in activating surface reconstruction for the high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction

A climax in the development of cost-effective and high-efficiency transition metal-based electrocatalysts has been witnessed recently for sustainable energy and related conversion technologies. In this regard, structure-activity relationships based on several descriptors have already been proposed to rationally design electrocatalysts. However, the dynamic reconstruction of the surface structures and compositions of catalysts during electrocatalytic water oxidation, especially during the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), complicate the streamlined prediction of the catalytic activity. With the achievements in operando and in situ techniques, it has been found that electrocatalysts undergo surface reconstruction to form the actual active species in situ accompanied with an increase in their oxidation state during OER in alkaline solution. Accordingly, a thorough understanding of the surface reconstruction process plays a critical role in establishing unambiguous structure-composition-property relationships in pursuit of high-efficiency electrocatalysts. However, several issues still need to be explored before high electrocatalytic activities can be realized, as follows: (1) the identification of initiators and pathways for surface reconstruction, (2) establishing the relationships between structure, composition, and electrocatalytic activity, and (3) the rational manipulation of in situ catalyst surface reconstruction. In this review, the recent progress in the surface reconstruction of transition metal-based OER catalysts including oxides, non-oxides, hydroxides and alloys is summarized, emphasizing the fundamental understanding of reconstruction behavior from the original precatalysts to the actual catalysts based on operando analysis and theoretical calculations. The state-of-the-art strategies to tailor the surface reconstruction such as substituting/doping with metals, introducing anions, incorporating oxygen vacancies, tuning morphologies and exploiting plasmonic/thermal/photothermal effects are then introduced. Notably, comprehensive operando/in situ characterization together with computational calculations are responsible for unveiling the improvement mechanism for OER. By delivering the progress, strategies, insights, techniques, and perspectives, this review will provide a comprehensive understanding of the surface reconstruction in transition metal-based OER catalysts and future guidelines for their rational development.

Metal-organic-framework derived hollow manganese nickel selenide spheres confined with nanosheets on nickel foam for hybrid supercapacitors

Metal-organic framework (MOF) derived nanoarchitectures have special features, such as high surface area (SA), abundant active sites, exclusive porous networks, and remarkable supercapacitive performance when compared to traditional nanoarchitectures. Herein, we propose a viable strategy for the synthesis of hollow manganese nickel selenide spheres comprising nanosheets supported on the nickel foam (denoted as MNSe@NF) from the MOF. The MNSe nanostructures can demonstrate enriched active sites, and shorten the ion-electron diffusion pathways. When the MNSe@NF electrode is used as a cathode electrode for a hybrid supercapacitor, the electrode reflected impressive supercapacitive properties with a high capacity of 325.6 mA h g-1 (1172.16 C g-1) at 2 A g-1, an exceptional rate performance of 86.6% at 60 A g-1, and remarkable longevity (3.2% capacity decline after 15 000 cycles). Also, the assembled MNSe@NF∥AC@NF hybrid supercapacitors employing activated carbon on the nickel foam (AC@NF, anode electrode) and MNSe@NF (cathode electrode) revealed an impressive energy density of 66.1 W h kg-1 at 858.45 W kg-1 and an excellent durability of 94.1% after 15 000 cycles.

Surface Selenylation Engineering for Construction of a Hierarchical NiSe2/Carbon Nanorod: A High-Performance Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensor

As glucose (Glu) is an essential substance for metabolism as well as a symbol to diagnose diabetes, the demand of Glu sensors has increased significantly in recent decades. In this work, a hierarchical Ni-based electrochemical enzyme-free Glu sensor, namely, NiSe₂/CNR (carbon nanorod), was engineered through a facile thermal treatment using dimethylglyoxime dinickel salt with selenium (Se) powder. The prepared NiSe₂/CNR not only subtly introduces a hierarchical structure with rod-like carbon nanorods and rock-like NiSe₂ nanoparticles, which are extremely helpful in offering a greater catalytic activity area and more catalytic active sites, but also incorporates the Se element to increase the inherent activity. The fabricated NiSe₂/CNR exhibits distinguished performance for Glu detection in alkaline electrolytes with linear ranges of 0.5-411 μM and 411 μM to 6.311 mM, high sensitivities of 3636 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 at low concentrations, and 2121 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 at high concentrations, as well as a low detection limit of 380 nM (S/N = 3). It also possesses favorable reproducibility, stability, and long-term storage capacity. The practical feasibility of NiSe₂/CNR was also validated by detecting Glu in human serum. Moreover, the prepared hierarchical NiSe₂/CNR is of general interest for the construction of hierarchical Ni-based sensors.
