Fast and accurate determination of the electroactive surface area of MnOx

In Situ Synthesis of Rare-Earth Hybridized Functional Core-Shell Architectures from Microporous Salt Templates and Capacitance-Adsorption Correlation Mechanisms

Biochar Porous Carbon (BPC) has become a research hotspot in the fields of energy storage, conversion, catalysis, adsorption, and separation engineering. However, the key problem of pore structure liable to collapse has not yet been addressed effectively. Here, an innovative salt ionic coordination modulation technique is reported to synthesize a new core-shell structure of BPC (Dual-doped porous carbonaceous materials, RHPC3@LaYO3) by the asymmetric load of the f orbital ion, which prevents pore structural collapse. The result shows that the novel asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) with an excellent energy density (193.11 Wh·kg-1) and capacitance (267.14 F·g-1) by assembling the prepared porous BPC carrier and RHPC3@LaYO3, which surpass the typical supercapacitor. In order to elucidate the association between adsorption and capacitance, the adsorption coexistence equation (MACE) is constructed with the aim of providing a comprehensive explanation for the mechanism of single-multilayer adsorption. Furthermore, a specific linkage mechanism is discovered using adsorption/ desorption properties to validate the pros/cons of capacitive properties. These results demonstrate the potential of renewable biomass materials as ASCs, which can provide new ideas for the construction of an evaluation approach for the performance of future efficient multi-reaction energy storage devices.

FeCx-coated biochar nanosheets as efficient bifunctional catalyst for electrochemical detection and reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Herein, we present the exceptional performance of FeCx-coated carbon sheets (FC) derived from the pyrolysis of waste biomass as a bifunctional catalyst for electrochemical detection and catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Despite having a lower surface area, larger particle size, and lesser N content, the FC material prepared at a calcination temperature of 900 °C (FC900) outperforms the other samples. Deeper investigations revealed that the FC900 efficiently facilitates the charge transfer process and enhances the diffusion rate of 4-NP, leading to increased surface coverage of 4-NP on the surface of FC900. Additionally, relatively weaker interactions between 4-NP and FC900 allow the facile adsorption and desorption of reaction intermediates. Due to the synergetic interplay of these factors, FC900 exhibited a linear response to changes in 4-NP concentration from 1 μM to 100 μM with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 84 nM (S/N = 3) and high sensitivity of 12.15 μA μM-1 cm-2. Importantly, it selectively detects 4-NP in the presence of five times more concentrated 2-aminophenol, 4-aminophenol, catechol, resorcinol, and hydroquinone and ten times more concentrated metal salts such as Na2SO4. NaNO3, KCl, CuCl2, and CaCl2. Moreover, FC900 can accurately detect micromolar levels of 4-NP in river water with high recovery values (99.8-103.5 %). In addition, FC900 exhibited outstanding catalytic activity in reducing 4-NP to 4-aminophenol (4-AP), achieving complete conversion within 8 min with a high-rate constant of 0.42 min-1. FC900 also shows high recyclability in six consecutive catalytic reactions due to Fe magnetic property.

Capacitance Determination for the Evaluation of Electrochemically Active Surface Area in a Catalyst Layer of NiFe-Layered Double Hydroxides for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyser

The determination of the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of a catalyst layer (CL) of a non-precious metal catalyst is of fundamental importance in optimizing the design of a durable CL for anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis, but has yet to be developed. Traditional double layer capacitance (Cdl), measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV), is not suitable for the estimation of the ECSA due to the nonconductive nature of Ni-based oxides and hydroxides in the non-Faradaic region. This paper analyses the applicability of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) compared to CV in determining capacitances for the estimation of the ECSA of AEM-based CLs in an aqueous KOH electrolyte solution. A porous electrode transmission line (TML) model was employed to obtain the capacitance-voltage dependence from 1.0 V to 1.5 V at 20 mV intervals, covering both non-Faradic and Faradic regions. This allows for the identification of the contribution of a NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst and supports in a CL, to capacitances in both non-Faradic and Faradic regions. A nearly constant double layer capacitance (Qdl) observed in the non-Faradic region represents the interfaces between catalyst supports and electrolytes. The capacitance determined in the Faradic region by EIS experiences a peak capacitance (QF), which represents the maximum achievable ECSA in an AEMCL during reactions. The EIS method was additionally validated in durability testing. An approximate 30% loss of QF was noted while Qdl remained unchanged following an eight-week test at 1 A/cm2 constant current density, implying that QF, determined by EIS, is sensitive to and therefore suitable for assessing the loss of ECSA. This universal method can provide a reasonable estimate of catalyst utilization and enable the monitoring of catalyst degradation in CLs, in particular in liquid alkaline electrolyte water electrolysis systems.
