Psychological mediators between risk perception and psychological wellbeing in emergency healthcare workers

Healthcare workers are subjected to numerous work-related stress factors, which have negative consequences on their physical and mental health, making them a vulnerable group. The recent pandemic caused by the new coronavirus created a high demand for attention from healthcare workers, which put their mental health at risk. This study aimed to test a mediation model in which resilience and the satisfaction of psychological needs play a mediating role in risk perception, the attitude toward the management carried out by the administration, emotional intelligence on psychological wellbeing, and depressive symptoms of frontline professionals. The sample consisted of 405 healthcare professionals aged between 22 and 65 years, belonging to critical care units in southern Spain. Linear correlation and mediation analyses were performed. The results showed that psychological wellbeing had positive correlations with resilience and negative correlations with the discrepancy in the satisfaction of psychological needs. Depressive symptoms had negative correlations with resilience and positive correlations with the satisfaction of psychological needs. To explore these results further, a mediation analysis was conducted, and a large set of significant indirect effects was found.

Occupational risk perception of nursing students, affecting factors and their association with occupational accidents: A crosssectional, multicenter study

Aim: Occupational risks by leading to accidents and diseases can adversely affect the health of nursing students and can cause serious injuries. Therefore, students are expected to be aware of these risks in order to be aware of occupational accidents or diseases and take precautions. This study was aimed to evaluate the occupational risk perception of nursing students and the factors affecting it and their association with occupational accidents. Material and Methods: Study was carried out with 728 nursing students in six universities. The data were collected using “Data Gathering Form” prepared by researchers and “Occupational Risk Perception Scale (ORPS)”. Results: The mean age was 20.8±1.65 (min.18-max.35) years and the majority (82.0%) of the participants were females. Clinical practice areas were defined as high risk areas by the 65.1% of the students. Cytostatic drugs and risk of genotoxicity in health workers. A literature review

OBJECTIVE

To analyse the genotoxic risk of cytostatic drugs in health professionals after occupational exposure.

METHOD

Literature was searched for the databases PubMed, Lilacs, The Cochrane Library and Scopus with free and controlled language (MeSH terms) using boolean operators AND and OR. The research was limited to articles published between 2005-2016.

RESULTS

11 articles were selected depending on their relevancy to this review's aim. Nine of the 11 articles proved the existence of damage to genetic material (DNA) of health workers, who were exposed to cytostatics. Furthermore, current security practices do not eliminate the chance of exposure completely. Therefore, the creation of new clinical trials is required.

CONCLUSIONS

Handling cytostatic drugs can cause a genotoxic risk to health workers who are exposed to these substances. This exposure may cause damage on the workers' DNA. There are not enough data to prove a cause-effect relationship between the genotoxic risk and adverse reactions on individuals. Health education will be the main way to raise the awareness and prevention this problem.

Self-reported environmental health risks of nurses working in hospital surgical units

AIM

This study investigated the occupational health risk factors among nurses who work in public hospital surgical units.

BACKGROUND

Nursing has a significant place in healthcare systems around the world. Surgical units are environments with certain risks, especially because of the possibility of exposure to various chemical, biologic or physical hazards.

METHODS

This study was conducted with 229 nurses who were working in the 11 surgery units of a big university hospital. In this cross-sectional study, a personal information form and an occupational risk factors scale were administered to respondents. We performed factor and reliability analyses for the scale; the overall reliability of the 41 items was α = 0.924, and the factor analysis found the scale was feasible.

RESULTS

Biologic and psychological risk factor levels were found to be high. Physical, chemical, ergonomic and radiation risk factor levels were moderate. The general occupational risk factor score was moderate. Nurses working night duty were confronted with physical and psychological risk factors at a higher rate compared with those working in the daytime.

CONCLUSION

Reported occupational health problems by nurses were correlated with the descriptive properties of the nurses including age, sex, marital status, education level, working hours, mode of working and status of occupational health and safety training.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING

Nurses experience different occupational risks. If these risks are identified, healthier working environments can be provided to the nurses by taking necessary precautions.

IMPLICATIONS FOR SOCIAL POLICY

The health care provided by nurses who work in a healthy environment would be more efficient and of better quality, which will result in better economic and social outcomes for individual and communities.
