Eutrophication causes invertebrate biodiversity loss and decreases cross-taxon congruence across anthropogenically-disturbed lakes

Inter-annual and seasonal variations of the metazoan parasite communities of the blue sea catfish Ariopsis guatemalensis (Siluriformes: Ariidae), in a tropical coastal lagoon

Parasitological studies of long-term inter-annual variations provide more precise and reliable information about the biological structure of fish parasite communities, and constitute a reference data base for future studies. A total of 1103 blue sea catfish Ariopsis guatemalensis from a tropical eutrophic coastal lagoon were examined for parasites over a 22-year period (from May 2000 to October 2022), to test the hypothesis that parasite communities of this host, should exhibit greater variations in their structure and species composition mainly over long-term periods. Three species of monoxenous (single-host life cycle), and nine of heteroxenous (multi-host life cycle) parasites were identified. The results indicated that parasite species composition of this catfish has remained stable over a 22-years period. However, the community structure has registered notable changes over periods of several years, mainly due to the replacement of the numerically dominant species. Temporal variations in the infection dynamics of component parasite species, were possibly caused by a combination of biotic and abiotic factors, influenced by the seasonal dry/rainy cycle, which can affect the availability of intermediate host populations, as well as the feeding and reproductive behavior of the host.

Land use and river-lake connectivity: Biodiversity determinants of lake ecosystems

Lake ecosystems confront escalating challenges to their stability and resilience, most intuitively leading to biodiversity loss, necessitating effective preservation strategies to safeguard aquatic environments. However, the complexity of ecological processes governing lake biodiversity under multi-stressor interactions remains an ongoing concern, primarily due to insufficient long-term bioindicator data, particularly concerning macroinvertebrate biodiversity. Here we utilize a unique, continuous, and in situ biomonitoring dataset spanning from 2011 to 2019 to investigate the spatio-temporal variation of macroinvertebrate communities. We assess the impact of four crucial environmental parameters on Lake Dongting and Lake Taihu, i.e., water quality, hydrology, climate change, and land use. These two systems are representative of lakes with Yangtze-connected and disconnected subtropical floodplains in China. We find an alarming trend of declining taxonomic and functional diversities among macroinvertebrate communities despite improvements in water quality. Primary contributing factors to this decline include persistent anthropogenic pressures, particularly alterations in human land use around the lakes, including intensified nutrient loads and reduced habitat heterogeneity. Notably, river-lake connectivity is pivotal in shaping differential responses to multiple stressors. Our results highlight a strong correlation between biodiversity alterations and land use within a 2-5 km radius and 0.05-2.5 km from the shorelines of Lakes Dongting and Taihu, respectively. These findings highlight the importance of implementing land buffer zones with specific spatial scales to enhance taxonomic and functional diversity, securing essential ecosystem services and enhancing the resilience of crucial lake ecosystems.

Global regionalized characterization factors for phosphorus and nitrogen impacts on freshwater fish biodiversity

Inefficient global nutrient (i.e., phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N)) management leads to an increase in nutrient delivery to freshwater and coastal ecosystems and induces eutrophication in these aquatic environments. This process threatens the various species inhabiting these ecosystems. In this study, we developed regionalized characterization factors (CFs) for freshwater eutrophication at 0.5 × 0.5-degree resolution, considering different fates for direct emissions to freshwater, diffuse emissions, and increased erosion due to agricultural land use. The CFs were provided for global and regional species loss of freshwater fish. CFs for global species loss were quantified by integrating global extinction probabilities. Results showed that the CFs for P and N impacts on freshwater fish are higher in densely populated regions that encompass either large lakes or the headwaters of large rivers. Focusing on nutrient-limited areas increases country-level CFs in 51.9 % of the countries for P and 49.5 % of the countries for N compared to not considering nutrient limitation. This study highlights the relevance of considering freshwater eutrophication impacts via both P and N emissions and identifying the limiting nutrient when performing life cycle impact assessments.

Effects of nutrient enrichment on freshwater macrophyte and invertebrate abundance: A meta-analysis

External nutrient loading can cause large changes in freshwater ecosystems. Many local field and laboratory experiments have investigated ecological responses to nutrient addition. However, these findings are difficult to generalize, as the responses observed may depend on the local context and the resulting nutrient concentrations in the receiving water bodies. In this research, we combined and analysed data from 131 experimental studies containing 3054 treatment-control abundance ratios to assess the responses of freshwater taxa along a gradient of elevated nutrient concentrations. We carried out a systematic literature search in order to identify studies that report the abundance of invertebrate, macrophyte, and fish taxa in relation to the addition of nitrogen, phosphorus, or both. Next, we established mixed-effect meta-regression models to relate the biotic responses to the concentration gradients of both nutrients. We quantified the responses based on various abundance-based metrics. We found no responses to the mere addition of nutrients, apart from an overall increase of total invertebrate abundance. However, when we considered the gradients of N and P enrichment, we found responses to both nutrients for all abundance metrics. Abundance tended to increase at low levels of N enrichment, yet decreased at the high end of the concentration gradient (1-10 mg/L, depending on the P concentration). Responses to increasing P concentrations were mostly positive. For fish, we found too few data to perform a meaningful analysis. The results of our research highlight the need to consider the level of nutrient enrichment rather than the mere addition of nutrients in order to better understand broad-scale responses of freshwater biota to eutrophication, as a key step to identify effective conservation strategies for freshwater ecosystems.

Revealing the hidden burden for lake management: the sediment phosphorus storage pools in Eastern Plain Lake Zone, China

As one of the essential components in ecosystems, lakes play a major role in the global phosphorus (P) cycle. It is helpful for further understanding of the inside lake P geochemical cycle to research P pollution and storage in lakes, which is of positive significance for lake eutrophication restoration. In this study, we investigated the total phosphorus concentrations (TPC) of water and sediments from 37 lakes in the Eastern Plain Lake Zone (EPL) of China, evaluated the P pollution degree of lakes, and estimated P storage in lake sediments with quantitative data of lake area and number. The results indicate that the total phosphorus concentrations of water (TPCW) and total phosphorus concentrations of the surface sediments (0-1 cm, TPCSS) in EPL were high, the mean values were 0.11 mg·L-1 and 869.85 mg·kg-1 respectively, with obvious differences between urban and rural areas, as well as between different river basins. Over half (56.76% and 70.27% respectively) of the lakes reached severe pollution levels in water and surface sediments. There were 16224 lakes (> 0.01 km2) with a total area of 21662.37 km2 in the EPL, and the P storage in the lake sediments (0-30 cm) was about 4.87 ± 2.08 Tg (1 Tg = 1 × 1012 g), accounting for about 2.74% of the basin soil. TPCW and TPCSS of lakes in the EPL were significantly positively correlated, may suggest a close nutrient cycling relationship between the lake water and the sediment. During periods of high winds and waves, the stored P in the top sediments in the EPL may continue to participate in the internal P geochemical cycle and migrate to the overlying water, posing a potential pollution hazard. Therefore, it is crucial to take into account the sediment P pools when formulating effective lake phosphorus management strategies.

Freshwater trophic status mediates microbial community assembly and interdomain network complexity

Freshwater microorganisms and their interactions are important drivers of nutrient cycling that are in turn affected by nutrient status, causing shifts in microbial community diversity, composition, and interactions. However, the impact of water trophic status on bacterial-archaeal interdomain interactions remains poorly understood. This study focused on the impact of trophic status, as characterized by trophic state index (TSI), on the interdomain interactions of freshwater microbial communities from 45 ponds in Hangzhou. Our results showed that the mesotrophic wetland bordering on lightly eutrophic (Hemu: TSI of 49; lightly eutrophic is defined as 50 ≤ TSI <60) harbored a much more complex bacterial-archaeal interdomain network, which showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher connectivity than the wetlands with lower (TSI of 38) or higher (TSI of 57) trophic levels. Notably, light eutrophication strengthened the network modules' negative associations with organic carbon through some network hubs, which could trigger carbon loss in wetlands. We also detected a non-linear response of interdomain network complexity to the increasing of nutrients with a turning point of approximately TSI 50. Quantitative estimates of community assembly processes and structural equation modelling analysis indicated that chlorophyll-a, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus could regulate interdomain network complexity (50% of the variation explanation rate) by driving microbial community assembly. This study demonstrates that microbial interdomain network complexity could be used as a bioindicator for ecological changes, which would helpful for improving ecological assessment of the freshwater eutrophication.

Experiments about the removal of supersaturated total dissolved gas from water environment by activated carbon adsorption

Water environment conditions directly support aquatic life. It is important to maintain a suitable water environment to improve the efficient use of water resources. Supersaturation of total dissolved gas (TDG) in the water will cause fish suffer from gas bubble disease and even mortalities. Measures should be taken to mitigate the adverse effect of supersaturated TDG. Considering the adsorption effect of porous medium, activated carbon (AC) was utilized in this experiment to explore the effect of AC on supersaturated TDG removal. The effects of AC properties, AC dosage, and initial TDG saturation were investigated. The results showed that adding AC in the water could effectively accelerate the supersaturated TDG removal rate, which was positively correlated with the AC specific surface area and dosage. Meanwhile, the average dissipation rate of TDG increased and then decreased with increasing initial TDG saturation. The adsorption characteristics of AC on supersaturated TDG were also explored. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity and removal rate were 0.262 mg/g and 48.5% respectively. It was concluded that the adsorption process of AC on supersaturated TDG conformed to the Langmuir equation and pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Recycling test indicated that the used AC could be reused after drying. It was hoped that this research could contribute to improving water environment and ensuring the healthy development of the aquatic livings.

The desorption mechanism of dissolved organic matter on pollutants and the change of biodiversity during sediment dredging

Sediment dredging is an effective means to control the endogenous pollution of lakes, which could significantly change the concentration and composition of organic matter, especially dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the lake. DOM is particularly important for the release of endogenous pollutants, which will inevitably bring an impact on aquatic biodiversity. Nevertheless, in recent research little attention has been paid to the desorption mechanism of DOM on pollutants and the change of biodiversity during dredging. This study investigated the physicochemical properties of DOM in the sediment by taking a sediment dredging project in Dianchi Lake in China for example. The correlations of DOM properties with the desorption behavior of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and the biodiversity of aquatic organisms were analyzed. The results show that the aromaticity and humification of DOM were improved after dredging, and the high molecular weight DOM was degraded into low molecular weight substance. The desorption amount of N, P and heavy metals (Cd, Pb) were decreased as the pH values increased. Moreover, NH₄⁺-N promoted the release of Pb²⁺ from DOM, while the release of PO₄^3--P was inhibited. Correlation analysis shows that the physicochemical properties of DOM exactly affected the release of N, P, Cd and Pb. It was easier to desorb pollutants with low aromaticity and humification of DOM, leading to a decrease in the diversity of aquatic organisms. This study identified the desorption mechanism of endogenous pollutants in DOM and the ecological risk to aquatic organisms, providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of water pollution.

Responses of multiple facets of macroinvertebrate alpha diversity to eutrophication in floodplain lakes

The accelerated eutrophication of freshwater lakes has become an environmental problem worldwide. Increasing numbers of studies highlight the need to incorporate functional and phylogenetic information of species into bioassessment programms, but it is still poorly understood how eutrophication affects multiple diversity facets of freshwater communities. Here, we assessed the responses of taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates to water eutrophication in 33 lakes in the Yangtze River floodplain in China. Our results showed that macroinvertebrate assemblage structure was significantly different among four lake groups (river-connected, macrophyte-dominated, macrophyte-algae transition, and algae-dominated). Three taxonomic, two phylogenetic and two functional diversity indices were significantly different among the lake groups. Except for the increasing trend of Lambda⁺, these metrics showed a clear decreasing trend with increasing levels of eutrophication, with highest values detected in river-connected and macrophyte-dominated lakes, followed by macrophyte-algae transition lakes and algal-dominated lakes. Although differing in the number and identity of key environmental and spatial variables among the explanatory models of different diversity indices, environmental factors (eutrophication-related water quality variables) played more important role than spatial factors in structuring all three facets of alpha diversity. The predominant role of environmental filtering can be attributed to the strong eutrophication gradient across the studied lakes. Among the three diversity facets, functional diversity indices performed best in portraying anthropogenic disturbances, with variations in these indices being solely explained by environmental factors. Spatial factors were mostly weak or negligible in accounting for the variation in functional diversity indices, implying that trait-based indices are robust in portraying anthropogenic eutrophication in floodplain lakes. However, variation in some taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity indices were also affected by spatial factors, indicating that conservation practitioners and environmental managers should use these metrics with caution when providing solutions for addressing eutrophication in floodplain lakes.

Decadal biodiversity trends in rivers reveal recent community rearrangements

While it is recognized that biodiversity currently declines at a global scale, we still have an incomplete understanding of local biodiversity trends under global change. To address this deficiency, we examined the recent decadal trends in water quality and biodiversity (taxonomic and functional) of key river organisms (diatoms, macroinvertebrates and fish) in France. We implemented regression, RLQ and fourth-corner analyses. Our results showed that nutrient loads tended to decrease, diatom richness tended to decline and macoinvertebrate richness tended to increase. The recovery of sensitive taxa in all three groups suggested a successful outcome of water quality management in France over the past decades. Our study further revealed consistent rearrangements within river communities, with a decrease in the ratio of planktonic to benthic diatoms, and corresponding functional changes in macroinvertebrate and fish trait composition, indicative of a trophic cascade in response to changes in environmental conditions.

Sediment as a Refuge Spot for Planktonic Crustaceans

The littoral zone of shallow water bodies (SWB) is often considered in relation to predator–prey interactions. In this study we assumed that the littoral sediment serves as a refuge for planktonic microcrustaceans, mediated by size-dependent fish predation. In order to recognise the impact of fish on their prey, we determined: (i) the assemblage and size structure of crustaceans and fish; and (ii) the biotic interactions along the gradient of the heterogeneity of the littoral zone. The results showed that in the sediment of macrophyte-dominated SWB, large-sized cladocerans predominated and were preyed upon by smaller-sized fish. In the sediment of macrophyte-absent SWB, large-sized copepods dominated, due to the predation risk of larger-sized fish. Cladoceran females with egg broods mostly selected sediment as shelter. Cladocera/Copepoda ratios were lower in the littoral of vegetated SWB, and higher in unvegetated SWB. The ratios in the adjacent sediment revealed an opposite pattern. It is important to point out the findings of planktonic crustacean species in the sediment of SWB are not recorded in the littoral water. The result of this study will contribute to the knowledge of defence strategy mechanisms developed by zooplankters against predators.

Effects of Nutrient Levels on Microbial Diversity in Sediments of a Eutrophic Shallow Lake

Microorganisms can both indicate the water quality characteristics and the health of the aquatic environment, which have an important influence on the cycling of organic carbon, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in nature. In this study, we took Taihu Lake, a typical eutrophic lake in China, as the research object, and monitored the northern (Changzhou City) and southern (Changxing County) regions of Taihu Lake for three consecutive years (2019–2021), respectively. We also analyzed the microbial diversity in sediments, and then summarized the effects of different nutrient environments on microorganisms in the aquatic environment. The results showed that the pollution level in the northern part of Taihu Lake was higher than that in the southern region of Taihu Lake, where the pollution was mainly in summer (June–July). The pollution in the southern region of Taihu Lake is relatively stable between 2019 and 2021; the changes in the northern part of Taihu Lake are relatively significant. Microbial diversity in the study area was negatively correlated with the degree of eutrophication of water bodies; microbial abundance was positively correlated with nutrient levels. The functional difference analysis indicated that the microorganisms in the sediments of Taihu Lake in the study area were involved in the nutrient transport and transformation, and played an important role in the purification of the lake water body. This study reveals the relationship between water eutrophication and microbial diversity, and then provides a theoretical basis for the management of eutrophic lakes.
