Ozone uptake (flux) as it relates to ozone-induced foliar symptoms of Prunus serotina and Populus maximowiziixtrichocarpa

Changes in growth pattern and rhizospheric soil biochemical properties of a leguminous tree species Leucaena leucocephala under long-term exposure to elevated ozone

Increasing concentrations of ground-level ozone (O₃) exert significant impacts on the plants, but there is limited data for belowground processes. We studied the effects of long-term exposure of elevated O₃ (EO₃) on plant growth parameters (plant height and biomass) and biochemical parameters (nutrients, microbial biomass and enzymatic activities) of rhizospheric soil of leguminous tree species Leucaena leucocephala. L. leucocephala seedlings were grown under ambient O₃ (AO₃) and EO₃ (+20 ppb above ambient) under Free Air Ozone Concentration Enrichment (O₃-FACE) facility and changes in plant growth and their rhizospheric soil properties were studied during 6, 12, 18 and 24 months of EO₃ exposure. L. leucocephala showed significant reductions in shoot length, root biomass, shoot biomass, leaf biomass and total biomass during 12, 18 and 24 months of exposure to EO₃. Total nutrients in rhizospheric soil like carbon and phosphorus were significantly reduced after 24 months of EO₃ exposure. Most of the available nutrients showed significant reduction after 6, 12 and 24 months of EO₃ exposure. A significant decrease was apparent in microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus after 6, 12, 18 and 24 months of EO₃ treatment. Significant reductions were observed in extracellular enzymatic activities (dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, β-glycosidase, fluorescein diacetate, arylsulfatase, cellulase and protease) of soil after 6, 12 and 24 months of EO₃ exposure. These results suggest that increasing O₃ concentrations will directly impact L. leucocephala growth as well as have indirect impact on the nutrient contents (C, N, and P), microbial biomass and extracellular enzymatic activities of rhizospheric soil of L. leucocephala. Our results suggest that continuous increase in O₃ concentrations will have serious implications for aboveground plant growth and belowground soil fertility in this region considered as O₃ hotspot.

Impact of chronic elevated ozone exposure on photosynthetic traits and anti-oxidative defense responses of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de wit tree under field conditions

In this study, the impact of long term exposure of elevated ozone (+20 ppb above ambient) on photosynthetic traits and anti-oxidative defense system of Leucaena leucocephala, a tree of great economic importance, was studied in a Free Air Ozone Concentration Enrichment (O₃-FACE) facility at different time intervals (6, 12, 18, and 24 months). Results showed that net photosynthesis, photosynthetic pigments and lipid peroxidation were significantly reduced after 6, 12 and 24 months of exposure to elevated ozone (eO₃) whereas stomatal conductance and transpiration rate were significantly decreased after 12 months of exposure to eO₃. Antioxidant enzymatic activities (catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase) were significantly increased after 12 months of exposure to eO_3. Ascorbate was increased significantly after 6 and 12 months of exposure to eO₃ while reduced glutathione content declined significantly after 6 and 24 months of exposure to eO₃. The study showed that there were several negative long lasting physiological and biochemical responses in Leucaena. The results provide evidence that Leucaena exhibited greater sensitivity to O₃ during initial exposure (up to 12 months) but showed moderate tolerance by the end of the 2nd year.

Predicting ozone levels from climatic parameters and leaf traits of Bel-W3 tobacco variety

Air pollution has been identified as a major cause of environmental and human health damage. O3 is an oxidative pollutant that causes leaf symptoms in sensitive plants. This study aims to adjust a multilinear model for the monitoring of O3 in subtropical climatic conditions by associating O3 concentrations with measurements of morphological leaf traits in tobacco plants and different environmental variables. The plants were distributed into five areas (residential, urban or industrial) in the southern region of Brazil and exposed during 14 periods, of 14 days each, during the years of 2014 and 2015. The environmental variables and leaf traits during the exposure periods were described by mean, median, standard deviation and minimum and maximum values. Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were applied on data from exposure periods. Leaf injury index, leaf area, leaf dry mass, temperature, relative humidity, global solar radiation and accumulated rainfall were used in the regression analyses to select the best models for predicting O3 concentrations. Leaf injury characteristically caused by O3 was verified in all areas and periods of plant exposure. Higher values of leaf injury (24.5% and 27.7%) were registered in the 13th and 12th exposure periods during spring and in areas influenced by urban and industrial clutches. The VPD, temperature, global solar radiation and O3 were correlated to leaf injury. Environmental variables [leaf area, leaf dry mass, global solar radiation and accumulated rainfall] and primarily the VPD were fundamental to improve the adjustments done in the bioindicator model (R2 ≥ 0.73). Our research shows that biomonitoring employing the tobacco "Bel-W3" can be improved by measuring morphological leaf traits and meteorological parameters. Additionally, O3 fumigation experiment should be performed with biomonitoring as conducted in this study, which are useful in understanding the role of other environmental factors.

Stomatal ozone flux and visible leaf injury in native juvenile trees of Fagus sylvatica L.: a field study from the Jizerske hory Mts., the Czech Republic

The study was carried out at six sites in the Jizerskehory Mts. in the north of the Czech Republic. At all these sites, ranging in altitude between 460 and 962 m a. s. l., and during the period from June to September in 2008, O3 concentrations and environmental parameters important for accumulated stomatal O3 flux (AFst) into Fagus sylvatica leaves were measured. At five sites, visible injury on Fagus sylvatica L. juvenile tree leaves was observed. A combination of actual O3 levels in the Jizerkehory Mts. and environmental conditions, though relative air humidity and air temperature significantly limited stomatal conductance, has been sufficient enough to cause O3 uptake exceeding the critical level (CL) for forest ecosystems. The AFst values ranged between 13.4 and 22.3 mmol O3 m(-2). The CL for the accumulated stomatal flux of O3 above a flux threshold 1.6 nmol m(-2) s(-1) (AFst1.6) was exceeded at all sites from ca 45 to 270% (160% on average). The CL of 5 ppm h(-1) for AOT40 (accumulated O3 exposure above threshold of 40 ppb) was exceeded at four sites. The relationship between visible injury on O3 indices was found. The conclusions based on AOT40 and AFSt are not the same. AFSt has been determined as better predictor of visible injury than AOT40.

Responses of native broadleaved woody species to elevated ozone in subtropical China

To assess ozone sensitivity of subtropical broadleaved tree species and explore possible underlying mechanisms, six evergreen and two deciduous native species were exposed to either charcoal-filtered air or elevated O(3) (E-O(3), ∼150ppb) for one growing season. Initial visible symptoms in deciduous species appeared much earlier than those in evergreen species. The species which first showed visible symptoms also had the largest reductions in biomass. E-O(3) induced significant decreases in photosynthesis rate, chlorophyll content and antioxidant capacity but a significant increase in malondialdehyde content in two deciduous species and two evergreen species (Cinnamomum camphora and Cyclobalanopsis glauca). Except C. glauca, however, E-O(3) had no significant effects on stomatal conductance (g(s)), total phenols and ascorbate contents. Difference in O(3) sensitivity among all species was strongly attributed to specific leaf mass rather than g(s). It suggests that some subtropical tree species will be threatened by rising O(3) concentrations in the near future.

Gas exchange, antioxidants and foliar injuries in saplings of a tropical woody species exposed to ozone

Ozone (O(3)) reaches phytotoxical concentrations in the tropics, but the sensitivity of tropical plant species to O(3) remains unknown. Visible foliar injuries, carbon assimilation (A(sat)), stomatal conductance, superoxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) activity and ascorbic acid concentration (AA) were evaluated in different-aged leaves of Psidium guajava 'Paluma' saplings. We hypothesized that the old leaves are less capable of combating the stress induced by O(3) and hence exhibit more severe leaf injuries. Three O(3) exposure experiments were performed with 'Paluma' saplings in sites with high O(3) concentration and also under filtered air conditions. The exposure experiments corresponding to the seasons spring/2006, summer and autumn/2007. The decrease of A(sat) was greater in old leaves of saplings exposed to O(3), except in the second experiment, when the AA concentrations were more pronounced than in the other experiments. In second experiment, O(3) uptake was similar to that of the first experiment, but the injuries were less severe, probably due to the high AA concentrations. It was not possible to identify a pattern of superoxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) activity due to the high variability in the results from O(3) exposed and reference saplings. O(3) uptake/A(sat) was higher in leaves exhibiting greater injury, suggesting that decrease in A(sat) may have been the main feature associated with the visible foliar symptons.
