Responses to sound in three Centrarchid species: Do heterospecific interactions change behavior?

Due to the increasing prevalence and variety of underwater anthropogenic noise sources, and the growing human population, anthropogenic noise has the potential to negatively impact aquatic organisms. With this growing threat, the question of how fishes respond to this stressor in their natural environments becomes more urgent. The current study used behavioral trials with bluegill sunfish Lepomis macrochirus, pumpkinseed sunfish Lepomis gibbosus, and rock bass Ambloplites rupestris, both in isolation and in a heterospecific trial, to determine how behaviors indicative of stress were influenced by interspecific interactions when exposed to recordings of pure tones and boat motors. Regardless of social context, all three species experienced an increase in fin beats per second, an increase in time spent at the bottom of the pen, and a decrease in time spent swimming when exposed to boat noise. Fishes in heterospecific trials experienced more fin beats per second and spent less time swimming, but there was no significant difference when comparing time spent at the bottom of pen with fish in individual trials. Our findings of behavioral changes when exposed to acoustic stimuli, in two social contexts, allow for a deeper understanding of interspecific effects and provide insight into how varied field studies can be useful in studying fish behavior when encountering acoustic stressors.

Low-frequency band noise generated by industrial recirculating aquaculture systems exhibits a greater impact on Micropterus salmoidess

The effect of underwater noise environment generated by equipment in industrial recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) on fish is evident. However, different equipment generate noise in various frequency ranges. Understanding the effects of different frequency ranges noise on cultured species is important for optimizing the underwater acoustic environment in RAS. Given this, the effects of underwater noise across various frequency bands in RAS on the growth, physiology, and collective behavior of juvenile largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were comprehensively evaluated here. In this study, three control groups were established: low-frequency noise group (80-1000 Hz, 117 dB re 1μPa RMS), high-frequency noise group (1-19 kHz, 117 dB re 1μPa RMS), and ambient group. During a 30-day experiment, it was found that: 1) industrial RAS noise with different frequency bands all had a certain inhibitory effect on the growth of fish, which the weight gain rate and product of length and depth of caudal peduncle in the ambient group were significantly higher than those of the two noise groups, with the low-frequency noise group showing significantly lower values than the high-frequency noise group; 2) industrial RAS noise had a certain degree of adverse effect on the digestive ability of fish, with the low-frequency noise group being more affected; 3) industrial RAS noise affected the collective feeding behavior of fish, with the collective feeding signal propagation efficiency and feeding intensity of the noise groups being significantly lower than those of the ambient group, and the high-frequency noise group performing better than the low-frequency noise group as a whole therein. From the above, the underwater noise across different frequency bands generated by equipment operation in industrial RAS both had an impact on juvenile largemouth bass, with the low-frequency noise group being more severely affected.

Metabonomics and Transcriptomics Analyses Reveal the Development Process of the Auditory System in the Embryonic Development Period of the Small Yellow Croaker under Background Noise

Underwater noise pollution has become a potential threat to aquatic animals in the natural environment. The main causes of such pollution are frequent human activities creating underwater environmental noise, including commercial shipping, offshore energy platforms, scientific exploration activities, etc. However, in aquaculture environments, underwater noise pollution has also become an unavoidable problem due to background noise created by aquaculture equipment. Some research has shown that certain fish show adaptability to noise over a period of time. This could be due to fish's special auditory organ, i.e., their "inner ear"; meanwhile, otoliths and sensory hair cells are the important components of the inner ear and are also essential for the function of the auditory system. Recently, research in respect of underwater noise pollution has mainly focused on adult fish, and there is a lack of the research on the effects of underwater noise pollution on the development process of the auditory system in the embryonic development period. Thus, in this study, we collected embryo-larval samples of the small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) in four important stages of otic vesicle development through artificial breeding. Then, we used metabonomics and transcriptomics analyses to reveal the development process of the auditory system in the embryonic development period under background noise (indoor and underwater environment sound). Finally, we identified 4026 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 672 differential metabolites (DMs), including 37 DEGs associated with the auditory system, and many differences mainly existed in the neurula stage (20 h of post-fertilization/20 HPF). We also inferred the regulatory mode and process of some important DEGs (Dnmt1, CPS1, and endothelin-1) in the early development of the auditory system. In conclusion, we suggest that the auditory system development of L. polyactis begins at least in the neurula stage or earlier; the other three stages (tail bud stage, caudal fin fold stage, and heart pulsation stage, 28-35 HPF) mark the rapid development period. We speculate that the effect of underwater noise pollution on the embryo-larval stage probably begins even earlier.

How chronic anthropogenic noise can affect wildlife communities

Anthropogenic noise is a major pollutant in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Since the industrial revolution, human activities have become increasingly noisy, leading to both acute and chronic disturbance of a wide variety of animals. Chronic noise exposure can affect animals over their lifespan, leading to changes in species interactions and likely altering communities. However, the community-level impacts of chronic noise are not well-understood, which impairs our ability for effective mitigation. In this review, we address the effects of chronic noise exposure on communities and explore possible mechanisms underlying these effects. The limited studies on this topic suggest that noise can affect communities by changing the behavior and/or physiology of species in a community, which results in direct or knock-on consequences for other species in the ecosystem. Major knowledge gaps remain due to the logistically complex and financially expensive nature of the long-term studies needed to address these questions. By identifying these gaps and suggesting approaches to answer them, we provide a road map toward mitigating the effects of a noisy world.

Vivarium Lighting as an Important Extrinsic Factor Influencing Animal-based Research

Light is an extrinsic factor that exerts widespread influence on the regulation of circadian, physiologic, hormonal, metabolic, and behavioral systems of all animals, including those used in research. These wide-ranging biologic effects of light are mediated by distinct photoreceptors, the melanopsin-containing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells of the nonvisual system, which interact with the rods and cones of the conventional visual system. Here, we review the nature of light and circadian rhythms, current industry practices and standards, and our present understanding of the neurophysiology of the visual and nonvisual systems. We also consider the implications of this extrinsic factor for vivarium measurement, production, and technological application of light, and provide simple recommendations on artificial lighting for use by regulatory authorities, lighting manufacturers, designers, engineers, researchers, and research animal care staff that ensure best practices for optimizing animal health and wellbeing and, ultimately, improving scientific outcomes.

Artificial light at night reverses monthly foraging pattern under simulated moonlight

Mounting evidence shows that artificial light at night (ALAN) alters biological processes across levels of organization, from cells to communities. Yet, the combined impacts of ALAN and natural sources of night-time illumination remain little explored. This is in part due the lack of accurate simulations of the complex changes moonlight intensity, timing and spectra throughout a single night and lunar cycles in laboratory experiments. We custom-built a novel system to simulate natural patterns of moonlight to test how different ALAN intensities affect predator–prey relationships over the full lunar cycle. Exposure to high intensity ALAN (10 and 50 lx) reversed the natural lunar-guided foraging pattern by the gastropod mesopredator Nucella lapillus on its prey Semibalanus balanoides. Foraging decreased during brighter moonlight in naturally lit conditions. When exposed to high intensity ALAN, foraging increased with brighter moonlight. Low intensity ALAN (0.1 and 0.5 lx) had no impact on foraging. Our results show that ALAN alters the foraging pattern guided by changes in moonlight brightness. ALAN impacts on ecosystems can depend on lunar light cycles. Accurate simulations of night-time light cycle will warrant more realistic insights into ALAN impacts and also facilitate advances in fundamental night-time ecology and chronobiology.

Improving zebrafish laboratory welfare and scientific research through understanding their natural history

Globally, millions of zebrafish (Danio rerio) are used for scientific laboratory experiments for which researchers have a duty of care, with legal obligations to consider their welfare. Considering the growing use of the zebrafish as a vertebrate model for addressing a diverse range of scientific questions, optimising their laboratory conditions is of major importance for both welfare and improving scientific research. However, most guidelines for the care and breeding of zebrafish for research are concerned primarily with maximising production and minimising costs and pay little attention to the effects on welfare of the environments in which the fish are maintained, or how those conditions affect their scientific research. Here we review the physical and social conditions in which laboratory zebrafish are kept, identifying and drawing attention to factors likely to affect their welfare and experimental science. We also identify a fundamental lack knowledge of how zebrafish interact with many biotic and abiotic features in their natural environment to support ways to optimise zebrafish health and well-being in the laboratory, and in turn the quality of scientific data produced. We advocate that the conditions under which zebrafish are maintained need to become a more integral part of research and that we understand more fully how they influence experimental outcome and in turn interpretations of the data generated.

Impact of underwater noise on the growth, physiology and behavior of Micropterus salmoides in industrial recirculating aquaculture systems

The operation of the equipment in industrial recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) affects the underwater soundscape of aquaculture tanks where fishes live. This study evaluated the influence of commercial industrial RAS noise on the growth, physiology, and behavior of juvenile largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). In this study, two experimental groups, the RAS noise group (115 dB re 1 μPa RMS) and the ambient group (69 dB re 1 μPa RMS), were studied. The water quality and feeding regime for each group were kept the same during the 60-day experiment. Results showed that there was no significant difference in the average daily feed intake of the fish between the two treatments, while the rate of weight gain of the ambient group (755.27 ± 65.62%) was significantly higher than that of the noise group (337.66 ± 88.01%). In addition, the RAS environmental noise also had an adverse effect on the anti-oxidation and immune systems of the fish based on results of analysis of blood, liver, and intestinal samples. Moreover, environmental noise affected the swimming behavior of the fish school. The mean angle and distance between the focal fish and its nearest neighbor fish in RAS noise group were 33.3° and 92.1 mm, respectively, which were larger than those of the ambient group with 24.4° and 89.5 mm, respectively. From the above results, RAS noise did influence the welfare of largemouth bass, and the soundscape in RAS hence should be managed in real production.

A Systematic Review of Research Investigating the Combined Ecological Impact of Anthropogenic Noise and Artificial Light at Night

Levels of anthropogenic noise and artificial light at night (ALAN) are rapidly rising on a global scale. Both sensory pollutants are well known to affect animal behavior and physiology, which can lead to substantial ecological impacts. Most studies on noise or light pollution to date have focused on single stressor impacts, studying both pollutants in isolation despite their high spatial and temporal co-occurrence. However, few studies have addressed their combined impact, known as multisensory pollution, with the specific aim to assess whether the interaction between noise and light pollution leads to predictable, additive effects, or less predictable, synergistic or antagonistic effects. We carried out a systematic review of research investigating multisensory pollution and found 28 studies that simultaneously assessed the impact of anthropogenic noise and ALAN on animal function (e.g., behavior, morphology or life-history), physiology (e.g., stress, oxidative, or immune status), or population demography (e.g., abundance or species richness). Only fifteen of these studies specifically tested for possible interactive effects when both sensory pollutants were combined. Four out of eight experimental studies revealed a significant interaction effect, in contrast to only three out seven observational studies. We discuss the benefits and limitations of experimental vs. observational studies addressing multisensory pollution and call for more specific testing of the diverse ways in which noise and light pollution can interact to affect wildlife.

Sex Associated Effects of Noise Pollution in Stone Sculpin (Paracottus knerii) as a Model Object in the Context of Human-Induced Rapid Environmental Change

Simple Summary

In this comprehensive multidisciplinary study, we applied a novel multilevel approach to stone sculpins Paracottus knerii Dybowski, 1874, as model organisms and test for the first time the hypothesis of sex-dependent differences in response to long-term noise exposure in fish. The results testify that the stone sculpin females appeared to experience excessive stress, while the males showed adaptive recalibrations. These effects may be explained by a unique adaptive strategy of offspring care in the stone sculpin males and their biological role in reproductive behavior within the species. The findings obtained may help to elucidate the links between noise exposure in the context of human-induced rapid environmental change (HIREC), long-term sex-related changes in fishes, and the possible further evolutionary success of a species. Such HIREC modeling not only provides information about the potential consequences under anthropogenic pressure but also can help identify the natural mechanisms of stress resistance in different species, including those related to sex, and also contribute to the development of effective environmental management practices.

Abstract

This work simulates the consequences of HIREC using stone sculpins as model organisms. Sex-dependent effects of long-term noise exposure at mean sound pressure levels of 160–179 dB re 1 μPa (SPL_pk–pk) were measured. We applied a multilevel approach to testing the stress response: a comparative analysis of the macula sacculi and an assessment of hematological and molecular stress responses. Noise exposure resulted in hair cell loss, changes in some cytometric parameters in blood, and an increase in the number of functionally active mitochondria in the red blood cells of males and its decrease in females, demonstrating a mitochondrial allostatic load and depletion of functional reserve. Finally, a statistically significant decrease in the telomerase activity of the auditory epithelium and a shortening of telomere length in the brain as molecular markers of stress were observed after noise exposure only in females. No significant decrease in telomerase activity and shortening of telomere length in nerve target tissues were observed in stressed males. However, we recorded an increase in the telomerase activity in male gonads. This sex-dependent difference in load may be associated with accelerated cellular aging in females and lower stress-related long-term risk in males. In this article, we discuss possible reasons for these noise-induced stress effects.

The role of auditory and vibration stimuli in zebrafish neurobehavioral models

Strongly affecting human and animal physiology, sounds and vibration are critical environmental factors whose complex role in behavioral and brain functions necessitates further clinical and experimental studies. Zebrafish are a promising model organism for neuroscience research, including probing the contribution of auditory and vibration stimuli to neurobehavioral processes. Here, we summarize mounting evidence on the role of sound and vibration in zebrafish behavior and brain function, and outline future directions of translational research in this field. With the growing environmental exposure to noise and vibration, we call for more active use of zebrafish models for probing neurobehavioral and bioenvironmental consequences of acute and long-term exposure to sounds and vibration in complex biological systems.

Relevance of Electrical Light on Circadian, Neuroendocrine, and Neurobehavioral Regulation in Laboratory Animal Facilities

Light is a key extrinsic factor to be considered in operations and design of animal room facilities. Over the past four decades, many studies on typical laboratory animal populations have demonstrated impacts on neuroendocrine, neurobehavioral, and circadian physiology. These effects are regulated independently from the defined physiology for the visual system. The range of physiological responses that oscillate with the 24 hour rhythm of the day include sleep and wakefulness, body temperature, hormonal secretion, and a wide range of other physiological parameters. Melatonin has been the chief neuroendocrine hormone studied, but acute light-induced effects on corticosterone as well as other hormones have also been observed. Within the last two decades, a new photosensory system in the mammalian eye has been discovered. A small set of retinal ganglion cells, previously thought to function as a visual output neuron, have been shown to be directly photosensitive and act differently from the classic photoreceptors of the visual system. Understanding the effects of light on mammalian physiology and behavior must take into account how the classical visual photoreceptors and the newly discovered ipRGC photoreceptor systems interact. Scientists and facility managers need to appreciate lighting impacts on circadian, neuroendocrine, and neurobehavioral regulation in order to improve lighting of laboratory facilities to foster optimum health and well-being of animals.

Spatial avoidance to experimental increase of intermittent and continuous sound in two captive harbour porpoises

The continuing rise in underwater sound levels in the oceans leads to disturbance of marine life. It is thought that one of the main impacts of sound exposure is the alteration of foraging behaviour of marine species, for example by deterring animals from a prey location, or by distracting them while they are trying to catch prey. So far, only limited knowledge is available on both mechanisms in the same species. The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is a relatively small marine mammal that could quickly suffer fitness consequences from a reduction of foraging success. To investigate effects of anthropogenic sound on their foraging efficiency, we tested whether experimentally elevated sound levels would deter two captive harbour porpoises from a noisy pool into a quiet pool (Experiment 1) and reduce their prey-search performance, measured as prey-search time in the noisy pool (Experiment 2). Furthermore, we tested the influence of the temporal structure and amplitude of the sound on the avoidance response of both animals. Both individuals avoided the pool with elevated sound levels, but they did not show a change in search time for prey when trying to find a fish hidden in one of three cages. The combination of temporal structure and SPL caused variable patterns. When the sound was intermittent, increased SPL caused increased avoidance times. When the sound was continuous, avoidance was equal for all SPLs above a threshold of 100 dB re 1 μPa. Hence, we found no evidence for an effect of sound exposure on search efficiency, but sounds of different temporal patterns did cause spatial avoidance with distinct dose-response patterns.
