Abstract
In spite of the fact that bromophenols (BPs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are widely used as flame retardants, no data was available until now on the levels of these two chemicals in North Africa biota. Seafood products might represent one of the main sources of dietary exposure to persistent organic pollutants such as non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (ndl-PCBs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this study, the concentrations of the ndl-PCBs, PAH4, and BFRs were determined in seafood products from a North African lagoon (Bizerte lagoon). Almost all the compounds were detected (15 out of 18) in the analyzed marine organisms. The accumulation of the contaminants followed the order BFRs > ndl-PCB > PAH4. Mean contaminants concentrations ranged from 0.35 to 28.7 ng g-1 ww for ∑ndl-PCBs; from below limit of quantification to 476 ng g-1 ww for ∑BFRs and from below limit of quantification to 5.30 ng g-1 ww for ∑PAH4. PCB 138, 153, and 180 were the most frequently detected ndl-PCB congeners due to their high resistance to metabolic degradation. 2,4-dibromophenol (2,4-DBP) was the predominant BFR. Chrysene (Chr) was found to be the main contributor to the total PAH4 concentration. Contaminant profiles varied significantly among seafood which may be due to the difference in lipid content, trophic level, feeding behavior, and metabolism. To assess the human health risks, the average daily dose exposure of ndl-PCBs, the dietary daily intake of PAHs and the estimated dietary intake of 3,3-,5,5-tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and HBCD from seafood were estimated. Findings indicated no adverse effects for human health from any of the analyzed contaminants, except for ndl-PCBs in eel.

Abstract
Based on the 6th China Total Diet Study (CTDS) conducted in 2016-2019, the occurrence of both legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) was measured in animal-derived foods collected across China. Most BFRs could be frequently detected in food samples, indicating their ubiquity in the environment. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), a typical novel BFR, presented the highest contamination level, whereas legacy BFRs, including decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), still presented high detection frequencies and relatively abundant proportions in total BFRs. Compared with previous CTDSs conducted from 2007 to 2011, the levels and estimated dietary intakes (EDIs) of most BFRs showed a significant downtrend, which suggested that flame retardant consumption in China has transferred from legacy BFRs to novel BFRs (mainly DBDPE) and from BFRs to other kinds of flame retardants. Based on probabilistic estimation, the median EDIs of mainly used BFRs for the Chinese population ranged from 41.0 to 1.67 × 103 pg/kg bw/day, and meat consumption was the primary source in dietary BFR intake. By conducting the margin of exposure (MOE) approach or comparing with the reference dose (RfD), it can be concluded that daily dietary intakes of BFRs were still unable to cause significant health risks to the general population in China.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) are known to act as carriers of heavy metals; however, little is known about the intrinsic chemical additives of MPs, such as hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), in terms of the adsorption behaviors and migration risks of heavy metals on MPs. Here, we reported the potential mechanisms and risks of HBCD inherent in polystyrene (PS) MPs with Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) adsorption/desorption. A comparison of the adsorption capacity of the metals onto HBCD/PS composites (HBCD/PS) MPs (10.31-20.76 μmol/g), pure MPs (0-3.60 μmol/g), and natural minerals (0.11-13.88 μmol/g) showed that the addition of HBCD significantly promoted the metals adsorption onto the HBCD/PS MPs, and even exceeded that of natural particles. Isotherms and thermodynamic data suggested that the adsorption process of the metals onto the HBCD/PS MPs was spontaneous and endothermic, and that the adsorption was a mainly multi-ion process with an inclined direction. Furthermore, the results of SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XPS analyses, as well as density functional theory well explained that the metals were mainly adsorbed on the -O and -Br groups of the HBCD/PS MPs via electrostatic interactions and surface complexation. More importantly, by comparing the desorption activity with natural river water and seawater, HBCD inherent in MPs can enhance the long-range transfer of metals carried by the HBCD/PS MPs from contamination sources to potential sink like oceans. Thus, the HBCD/PS MPs with high loading of Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) could be potential secondary sources of these metals in seawater. Overall, these findings revealed the potential risks of flame retardant in MPs associated with metal migration, and advocated that flame retardant-related waste MPs should be included in coastal sustainable development.

Abstract
In this study, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) was detected in 114 fish samples collected from 6 administrative regions of Xiamen city, China. HBCD amounts ranged between ND (not detected) and 2.216 ng g-1 ww (mean, 0.127 ± 0.318 ng g-1 ww). Besides, α-HBCD was the main diastereoisomer in these fish specimens, followed by β-HBCD. Meanwhile, γ-HBCD was not detected in any of the samples. Significant differences were recorded among fish species. The results indicated that the levels and detection rates of HBCD were higher in Trachinotus ovatus compared with other aquatic organisms. Therefore, Trachinotus ovatus could be used as a marine biological indicator of HBCD. Within the regions investigated, Siming was significantly different from Jimei, Haicang, and Xiang'an. The spatial distribution of HBCD concentrations indicated higher mean levels in samples collected from Haicang, Jimei, and Xiang'an, respectively, with the highest detection rates in Jimei and Xiang'an, which might be related to geographical location and intense industrial and urban activities. Estimation of daily HBCD intake was performed according to fish consumption in Xiamen residents. The medium bound HBCD amounts in fish were approximately 0.073 and 0.088 ng kg bw-1d-1 for male and female residents of Xiamen, respectively. Exposure doses of HBCD indicated no health concern for Xiamen residents.

Abstract
The perchlorate levels in 330 foods belonging to 5 varieties obtained from Wuhan were monitored. An ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupoles mass spectrometry in combination with Cl18O4- internal standard method was performed to determine the level of perchlorate in various foods. Hereafter, dietary exposure and risk assessment of perchlorate was evaluated. The results revealed that the average level of perchlorate was 15.04 µg/kg with a detection of 95% among the whole food groups. The level of perchlorate in vegetables was the highest among the 5 varieties of food with an average content of 27.39 µg/kg, which in meat was the lowest with an average of 3.65 µg/kg. Estimated dietary intake results illustrated that males showed exposure in the range 0.004-0.18 µg/kg bw/day, which for females was 0.01-0.21 µg/kg bw/day. The results indicated that exposure to perchlorate via the food consumption for Wuhan people was evaluated as safe.
