Advanced determination of the spatial gradient of human health risk and ecological risk from exposure to As, Cu, Pb, and Zn in soils near the Ventanas Industrial Complex (Puchuncaví, Chile)

Effect of the Proximity to the Quintero-Puchuncaví Industrial Zone on Compounds Isolated from Baccharis macraei Hook. & Arn: Their Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activity

Baccharis macraei Hook. & Arn (Asteraceae), commonly known as Vautro, is found in the coastal areas of central-southern Chile, including the industrial zone of Quintero-Puchuncaví, known for the contamination of its soils with heavy metals, which together with other factors generate abiotic stress in plant species, against which they present defensive mechanisms. For this reason, the objective was to evaluate the effect of abiotic stress generated by the proximity of B. macraei to the industrial complex by assessing the physiological and metabolic states reported by the extracts and compounds isolated from the species, as well as the photosynthetic capacity, metal content and production, and antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity against tumorigenic cell lines of the phytoconstituents. To this end, B. macraei was collected at two different distances from the industrial complex, observing that the closer the species is, the greater the concentration of copper in the soil, generating a decrease in the rate of electron transport in situ, but an increase in antioxidant activity with low cytotoxicity. This activity could be due to the presence of flavonoids such as Hispidulin, Cirsimaritina, and Isokaempferida, as well as monoterpenes, oxygenated and non-oxygenated sesquiterpenes identified in this study.

Environmental pollution and health in Chilean older adults: Impact on quality of life and functional autonomy

Background and Aims

Due to increased urbanization and industry, environmental pollution is a serious public health concern. Globally, the quality of life is particularly lowered by exposure to high amounts of particulate matter (PM). Chile has five industrial zones with high pollution levels, called "sacrifice zones." However, the effect of polluted air on the quality of life and functional autonomy (FA) of older people living in industrial zones with high pollution levels is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the quality of life and FA differences between Chilean older women (OW) living in areas with lower and higher PM levels.

Materials and Methods

Seventy-two OW volunteered for this study. The sample was divided into Zone 1 (PM2.5 ≤ 15 µg/m3, n = 36) and Zone 2 (PM2.5 > 15 µg/m3, n = 36). The variables were quality of life-assessed through the SF-36v2.0 questionnaire, and FA-assessed through the GDLAM protocols. Differences between zones were tested by Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney test, both for independent samples (p < 0.05).

Results

All eight dimensions of quality of life were lower in Zone 2, of which the role emotional (RE) showed significant differences between zones (p < 0.05). Performance on the GDLAM protocols and the FA index were lower in Zone 2 (p ˃ 0.05).

Conclusion

OW in Zone 2 showed lower quality of life and FA. PM could affect the older population's physical and mental health and, therefore, the quality of life.

Oxidative damage associated with exposure to heavy metals present in topsoils in central Chile

Exposure to heavy metals may cause the overproduction of reactive oxygen species, generating oxidative stress and consequently, various harms to human health. The soil surrounding the Ventanas Industrial Complex, in Puchuncaví and Quintero municipal districts on the central Chilean coast, contains heavy metal concentrations (As, Cu, Pb, Zn, among others) that far exceed the maximum permissible levels established by Italian soil standards (used as a reference). This study aimed to investigate the potential association between heavy metal exposure in humans and the levels of oxidative stress biomarkers in inhabitants of these locations. We took blood samples from 140 adults living in sites with high concentrations of heavy metals in the soil and compared them with blood samples from 140 adults living in areas with normal heavy metal concentrations. We assessed lipid peroxidation, damage to genetic material, and Total Antioxidant Capacity in these blood samples. Our results indicate an association between oxidative damage and heavy metal exposure, where the inhabitants living in exposed areas have a higher level of DNA damage compared with those living in control areas. Given that DNA damage is one of the main factors in carcinogenesis, these results are of interest, both for public health and for public policies aimed at limiting human exposure to environmental pollution.

Metal(loid)s content in Concholepas concholepas (Mollusca) and human health assessment in a coastal environmental sacrifice zone, central Chile (∼32°S)

In seafood, the study of metal(loid)s is essential to assess their toxicity and to establish risks of human exposure. This study investigates the content of As, Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb in Concholepas concholepas in a coastal environmental sacrifice zone (Chile) to assess potential human-health risks by consumption of C. concholepas. The Cu and Cd content was found to be above the safety level established in chilean and international regulations. The Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) and Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) for As were comparatively high with respect to the other metals analysed. The THQ-As and Hazard Index (HI) suggest a moderate carcinogenic risk due to the consumption of C. concholepas in six of the nine sectors analysed. THQ and HI are reasonable indicators to assess risks to human-health from the consumption of shellfish with HMs. C. concholepas can be considered as a biomonitor to study metal(loid)s on the Chilean coast.

Effect of Industrial Pollution in Puchuncaví Valley on the Medicinal Properties of Senecio fistulosus Poepp. ex Les (Asteraceae): Content of Phytoconstituents and Their Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities

Senecio fistulosus, an endemic plant in Chile, is highly regarded for its medicinal properties and is popular in alternative medicine. It thrives even in polluted areas, like Puchuncaví Valley, Chile. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the impact of industrial pollution in Puchuncaví Valley, Chile, on the phytoconstituent content, as well as the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities, of S. fistulosus. Phenols, flavonoids, and anthraquinones content were measured, alongside the assessment of antioxidant activities. Additionally, a GC-MS analysis was conducted to profile the phytoconstituents, while the cytotoxic potential was evaluated in HT-29 and MCF-7 and cell line non-tumorigenic MCF-10. The Wild sample exhibited a greater concentration of phytoconstituents (0 to 169.48 mg·L-1) compared to the Commercial control (0 to 95.38 mg·L-1), directly correlating with its antioxidant activity. While the Wild species showed cytotoxic activity, the Commercial control demonstrated cytotoxic effects on MCF-10 and MCF-7. Noteworthy compounds identified were hexadecanoic acid (12.76 to 19.57% relative area) and (Z,Z,Z)-9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid (18.36% relative area), with anticancer properties. In conclusion, the abiotic stress experienced by S. fistulosus led to higher phytoconstituent content and improved antioxidant activity when contrasted with the Commercial control. The Commercial species showed increased cytotoxic activity against both tumorigenic and non-tumorigenic cell lines.

An appraisal of the principal concerns and controlling factors for Arsenic contamination in Chile

Although geogenic Arsenic (As) contamination is well-recognized in northern Chile, it is not restricted to this part of the country, as the geological conditions favoring As release to the human environment exist across the country as well, although not at the same level, based on comparatively fewer studies in central and southern Chile. The present work provides a critical evaluation of As sources, pathways, and controls with reports and case studies from across the country based on an exhaustive bibliographic review of its reported geogenic sources and processes that affect its occurrence, systematization, and critical revision of this information. Arc magmatism and associated geothermal activities, identified as the primary As sources, are present across the Chilean Andes, except for the Pampean Flat Slab and Patagonian Volcanic Gap. Metal sulfide ore zones, extending from the country's far north to the south-central part, are the second most important geogenic As source. While natural leaching of As-rich mineral deposits contaminates the water in contact, associated mining, and metallurgical activities result in additional As release into the human environment through mining waste and tailings. Moreover, crustal thickness has been suggested as a principal controlling factor for As release, whose southward decrease has been correlated with lower As values.

High adsorption performance for trace lead (II) cation from sewage by Fe/Cu metal organic nanosheets modified with terephthalic acid

A two-dimensional nanoflake (Fe/Cu-TPA) was prepared through a simple ultrasonic-centrifuge method. Fe/Cu-TPA has prominent performance on the removal of Pb²⁺ with low consistences. More than 99% lead (II) (Pb²⁺) was removed. The adsorption equipoise was established within 60 min for 50 mg L^-1 Pb²⁺. Fe/Cu-TPA shows excellent regenerability with 19.04% decline of Pb²⁺ adsorption competence in 5 cycles. There are two models for Fe/Cu-TPA adsorption of Pb²⁺, pseudo-second-order dynamic model and Langmuir isotherm model, with a utmost adsorption competence of 213.56 mg g^-1. This work offers a new candidate material for the industrial-grade Pb²⁺ adsorbents with promising application prospect.

Cerebrolysin Attenuates Exacerbation of Neuropathic Pain, Blood-spinal Cord Barrier Breakdown and Cord Pathology Following Chronic Intoxication of Engineered Ag, Cu or Al (50-60 nm) Nanoparticles

Neuropathic pain is associated with abnormal sensations and/or pain induced by non-painful stimuli, i.e., allodynia causing burning or cold sensation, pinching of pins and needles like feeling, numbness, aching or itching. However, no suitable therapy exists to treat these pain syndromes. Our laboratory explored novel potential therapeutic strategies using a suitable composition of neurotrophic factors and active peptide fragments-Cerebrolysin (Ever Neuro Pharma, Austria) in alleviating neuropathic pain induced spinal cord pathology in a rat model. Neuropathic pain was produced by constrictions of L-5 spinal sensory nerves for 2-10 weeks period. In one group of rats cerebrolysin (2.5 or 5 ml/kg, i.v.) was administered once daily after 2 weeks until sacrifice (4, 8 and 10 weeks). Ag, Cu and Al NPs (50 mg/kg, i.p.) were delivered once daily for 1 week. Pain assessment using mechanical (Von Frey) or thermal (Hot-Plate) nociceptive showed hyperalgesia from 2 weeks until 10 weeks progressively that was exacerbated following Ag, Cu and Al NPs intoxication in nerve lesioned groups. Leakage of Evans blue and radioiodine across the blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) is seen from 4 to 10 weeks in the rostral and caudal cord segments associated with edema formation and cell injury. Immunohistochemistry of albumin and GFAP exhibited a close parallelism with BSCB leakage that was aggravated by NPs following nerve lesion. Light microscopy using Nissl stain exhibited profound neuronal damages in the cord. Transmission electron microcopy (TEM) show myelin vesiculation and synaptic damages in the cord that were exacerbated following NPs intoxication. Using ELISA spinal tissue exhibited increased albumin, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), myelin basic protein (MBP) and heat shock protein (HSP 72kD) upregulation together with cytokines TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 levels in nerve lesion that was exacerbated following NPs intoxication. Cerebrolysin treatment significantly reduced hyperalgesia and attenuated BSCB disruption, edema formation and cellular changes in nerve lesioned group. The levels of cytokines were also restored near normal levels with cerebrolysin treatment. Albumin, GFAP, MABP and HSP were also reduced in cerebrolysin treated group and thwarted neuronal damages, myelin vesiculation and cell injuries. These neuroprotective effects of cerebrolysin with higher doses were also effective in nerve lesioned rats with NPs intoxication. These observations suggest that cerebrolysin actively protects spinal cord pathology and hyperalgesia following nerve lesion and its exacerbation with metal NPs, not reported earlier.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in soils and food crops from a coexist area of heavily industrialized and intensively cropping in the Chengdu Plain, Sichuan, China

Environmental pollution caused by rapid industrial activities are becoming increasingly drastic, particularly its impact on soil and plant health. The present study was conducted to investigate the heavy metal (loid) (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn) concentrations in soils and food biomass crops and estimate the potential health risks of metals to humans via consumption of contaminated food biomass crops from Shifang, a periurban agricultural areas in the Chengdu Plain, Sichuan, China. Results revealed that the soils have been experiencing a substantial accumulation of heavy metals, especially for Cd, with a mean of 0.84 mg kg⁻¹, about six times higher than the background values, of which 98% exceeded the pollution warning threshold of the China Soil Environmental Quality Standards. A total of 78% of all the grain part failed the national food standard for Cd. No significantly positive relationships between metal levels in food biomass crops and in the corresponding soils, indicated metals enrichment in soils were not entirely reflected to crops contaminant burdens. Estimated daily intake (EDI) of all the metals except for Pb, exceeded the oral reference dose (RfD) or the minimal risk levels recommended by USEPA and ATSDR. Target hazard quotients (THQs) of all the metals except for Cd was less than one indicated that potential health risk to the local inhabitant originated mainly from Cd exposure via cereals consumption. Mitigation strategies to curtail Cd-contaminated soils and crops Cd burdens need careful tailoring to meet the needs of health and safety in this region.

Microbial responses are unreliable indicators of copper ecotoxicity in soils contaminated by mining activities

Metal contamination of soil has become a serious environmental problem worldwide. Many studies have attempted to infer metal ecotoxicity from soil microbial responses. However, much of the data from these studies tends to be inconsistent and difficult to interpret. We hypothesized that microbial response would be a useful indicator of metal toxicity in soils contaminated by copper mining in Chile. Eighty-four topsoils (0-20 cm) were collected from three areas historically contaminated by copper mining (total Cu: 46-1106 mg kg^-1, soluble Cu: 0.05-2.3 mg kg^-1, pCu²⁺: 6.3-10, pH: 5.1-7.8, organic matter: 1.1-10%, clay: 0-28%). Based on soil metal concentrations and ecotoxicity thresholds, Cu was expected to be toxic to microorganisms in the studied soils, while the effects of other metals (total Zn: 79-672, As: 1.9-60, Pb: 19-220, Cd: 0.4-5.1 mg kg^-1) were expected to be minor. Soil microbial responses (microbial biomass and numbers, nitrogen mineralization and nitrification, and community-level physiological profiles) were also measured. The results showed that the different responses of soil microbes were not correlated with each other. Furthermore, the soil microbial responses were mainly influenced by the physicochemical properties of the soil, not by the metal concentrations in the soil. The effect of copper on the microbial response was either stimulating (positive) or toxic (negative). Of the soil microbial responses measured in this study, only the microbial biomass was useful for calculating dose-response curves. However, the microbial biomass response was not consistent among the different soil copper pools (total copper, soluble copper, and activity of free Cu²⁺ ions). It is important to emphasize that the thresholds obtained for copper toxicity cannot be adopted in a robust manner because of the different microbial responses in different sampling areas. Thus, in the copper-contaminated soils under study, microbial response was found to be an unreliable indicator of metal toxicity.

Arsenic in Caribbean bivalves in the context of Sargassum beachings: A new risk for seafood consumers

Sargassum strandings in the coastal environment can introduce arsenic into food webs. In this context, we assessed the risk of exposure to arsenic for consumers of Caribbean bivalves. In 2019, specimens of Asaphis deflorata and Phacoides pectinatus were collected in an Atlantic coastal zone of Martinique (island) to monitor the presence of arsenic species by LC-ICP-MS. The total arsenic (tAs) concentrations were, on average, 34.4 ± 3.8 and 76.9 ± 22.3 µg.g-1 dry weight for P. pectinatus and A. deflorata, respectively. Seven compounds of arsenic were detected in bivalve soft bodies. In P. pectinatus, monomethylarsonic acid was present at a relatively significant concentration (≈ 29.6%). These results were coupled with survey data collected in 2013 and again in 2019, from the main consumers of bivalves. The tAs intake was up to 6 mg.day-1 for a 240 g (wet weight) meal of bivalves. In addition, we proposed toxicological reference doses also based on detected toxic forms of arsenic and tested their relevance. We concluded that monitoring of total arsenic would be sufficient to ensure the protection of bivalve consumers. Consumption patterns expose consumers to a potential health risk. However, due to a decrease in consumption frequency associated with the depletion of bivalve resources by decomposing Sargassum mats, arsenic exposure has decreased. In the French Caribbean, this is the first study on the risk of human arsenic contamination from the ingestion of bivalves. This study is a contribution to the monitoring of arsenic in the Caribbean coastal environment.

Arsenic concentration in topsoil of central Chile is associated with aberrant methylation of P53 gene in human blood cells: a cross-sectional study

Gene expression can be modified in people who are chronically exposed to high concentrations of heavy metals. The soil surrounding the Ventanas Industrial Complex, located on the coastal zone of Puchuncaví and Quintero townships (Chile), contain heavy metal concentrations (As, Cu, Pb, Zn, among others) that far exceed international standards. The aim of this study was to determine the potential association of the heavy metals in soils, especially arsenic, with the status of methylation of four tumor suppressor genes in permanent residents in those townships. To study the methylation status in genes p53, p16, APC, and RASSF1A, we took blood samples from adults living in areas near the industrial complex for at least 5 years and compared it to blood samples from adults living in areas with normal heavy metal concentrations of soils. Results indicated that inhabitants of an area with high levels of heavy metals in soil have a significantly higher proportion of methylation in the promoter region of the p53 tumor suppressor gene compared with control areas (p-value: 0.0035). This is the first study to consider associations between heavy metal exposure in humans and aberrant DNA methylation in Chile. Our results suggest more research to support consistent decision-making on processes of environmental remediation or prevention of exposure.

Biochar mitigates bioavailability and environmental risks of arsenic in gold mining tailings from the eastern Amazon

Artisanal gold mining has generated tailings highly contaminated by arsenic (As) in Cachoeira do Piriá, eastern Amazon, leading to severe risks to the environment. Such risks should be mitigated considering the bioavailable concentration of the element, since it implies immediate damage to the ecosystem. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of biochars in mitigating the environmental risks of bioavailable As concentrations in gold mining tailings from underground and cyanidation exploration. The biochar addition increased mineral components, cation retention, phosphorus in all fractions, and organic and inorganic carbon. The bioavailability of As was reduced after adding the biochars, following the order palm kernel cake biochar > Brazil nut shell biochar > açaí seed biochar, with reductions of up to 13 mg kg-1 in the underground mining tailings and 17 mg kg-1 in the cyanidation mining tailings. These results contributed to the statistically significant reduction of the environmental risks in both mining tailings (6-17% in the underground mining tailings and 9-20% in the cyanidation mining tailings), which was emphasized by Pearson's correlation and multivariate analyzes. The incorporation of the bioavailable fractions of As (from sequential extraction) in the environmental risk assessment was a promising method for evaluating the efficiency of biochars in mitigating the damage caused by this metalloid in gold mining tailings.

Bioaccumulation and human health risks of potentially toxic elements in fish species from the southeastern Carajás Mineral Province, Brazil

Anthropogenic activities may have increased the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in fish from the southeastern Carajás Mineral Province in Brazil, which has not yet been studied. The objectives were to determine the quality parameters of surface water and bottom sediments, and to assess the bioaccumulation and risks of Al, Fe, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Ti, V and Zn in fish species from the southeastern Carajás Mineral Province. Water, sediments and fish species (Colossoma macropomum, Curimata cyprinoides, Geophagus sp., Leporinus trifasciatus, and Serrasalmus eigenmanni) were collected in 14 areas in the municipalities of Parauapebas, Marabá and Canaã dos Carajás, contemplating the Gelado Stream and the Parauapebas, Tapirapé and Itacaiúnas Rivers. Water samples were subjected to physicochemical analysis using a multiparameter meter. Concentrations of PTEs in all samples were quantified by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Enrichment factor (EF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) were calculated to study the sediment enrichment and contamination. Ecological and human health risk assessments were performed to determine the risks to the environment and population's health. EF and Igeo revealed that the sediments from the Parauapebas River and Gelado Stream are respectively enriched by Ba, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Pb, and Ba, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb and V. The concentrations of Fe (1.67 mg L^-1) and Mn (0.11 mg L^-1) in water and the concentrations of Cr (>0.1 mg kg^-1) and Pb (>2 mg kg^-1) in fish were above the Brazilian legislation thresholds. The ecological risk assessment revealed considerable risk from Ni and moderate risk from multiple PTEs in sediments from the Gelado Stream. Human health risks were detected for Pb in all fish species and for Mo in L.trifasciatus. These results indicate that techniques for monitoring and controlling contamination must be implemented by the environmental agencies.

A synthetic health risk assessment based on geochemical equilibrium simulation and grid spatial interpolation for zinc (II) species

Soil heavy metal pollution has become a global issue involving environmental safety and human health risks. This paper quantified the sources of heavy metals by positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and explored the spatial distribution of heavy metals by means of grid scales, with an industrial site as the study area in Suzhou. The PMF identified four pollution sources of heavy metal in soil, and the quantitative results revealed that industrial activities (33.5%) contributed the most to heavy metals, followed by soil parent materials (30.8%) and agricultural activities (19.7%). Zinc (Zn) was screened out as the targeted metal (TM) through the potential ecological risk assessment, the metal species of which was simulated by the geochemical software PHREEQC. This research aimed to determine the dominant metal species of TM with high-risk levels to realize the transformation of toxic metal species. Herein, according to the morphological evolution of metal species, the activity and concentration of the Zn ion species were obtained for both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessment. The evaluation of the optimized human health risk demonstrated that the associated health risk of Zn (II) ions depended predominantly on its metal speciation. Overall, the optimized carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk value of Zn₂S₃^2- for adults was 2.01E-04 and for children was 1.31, resulting in corresponding hazardous risk to humans, which accounted for high-risk levels of 61.5% and 58.5% for adults and children, respectively. The OHRA method can provide a reference for the decision-making of soil heavy metal pollution and remediation for specific heavy metals in polluted areas.

Impact of copper mining wastes in the Amazon: Properties and risks to environment and human health

Improper disposal of copper mining wastes can threaten the ecosystem and human health due to the high levels of potentially toxic elements released into the environment. The objective of this study was to determine the properties of Cu mining wastes generated in the eastern Amazon and their potential risks to environment and human health. Samples of forest soil and artisanal/industrial Cu mining wastes were collected and subjected to characterization of properties and pseudo-total concentrations of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, and Zn, in addition to chemical fractionation of Cu. The pH ranged from near neutrality to alkaline. Pseudo-total concentrations of Cu were high in all wastes, mainly in the artisanal rock waste, with 19,034 mg kg^-1, of which 61% is concentrated in the most reactive fractions. Pollution indices indicated that the wastes are highly contaminated by Cu and moderately contaminated by Cr and Ni. However, only the artisanal rock waste is associated with environmental risk. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic human health risks were detected, especially from exposure to Cr in the artisanal rock waste. Prevention actions and monitoring of the artisanal mining area are necessary to avoid impacts to the local population.

Environmental and human-health risks of As in soils with abnormal arsenic levels located in irrigated agricultural areas of Paracatu (MG), Brazil

The municipality of Paracatu (Brazil) is notorious for its large irrigated agricultural area and by abnormal arsenic (As) levels in selected soils of the region. Concerns regarding As exposure via ingestion of water and food are frequent, yet little is known about the behavior of arsenic in irrigated agricultural soils, as well as on As bioaccessibility/bioavailability in agroecosystems of this region. This work evaluated total and available As in agricultural soils cultivated under irrigation and in soils under native vegetation in Paracatu. We also assessed reactive arsenic fractions and As bioaccessibility in the soil, as well as arsenic levels in plant shoots to estimate As risks in these agroecosystems. Soil (different depths) and plant tissue samples were collected in 6 irrigated agricultural areas (CA1 to CA6) and 4 reference areas (RA1 to RA4). Total soil-As did not differ between soil depths, reinforcing that the source of As in agricultural soils is natural. This was evident when counterpointing arsenic and phosphorus contents at different soil depths, as both accumulate on the surface of oxidic soils when added to agroecosystems by anthropogenic routes (e.g., phosphate fertilization for P and irrigation for As). Available As levels in soils and plants were very small (below detection limit). Furthermore, all soils presented very low oral As bioaccessibility. Our findings revealed that the irrigated soils are not As polluted due to the low enrichment and accumulation of arsenic, as well as the prevalence of low ecological risks. There is no non-carcinogenic risk for the local population, except for children in RA2. The estimated carcinogenic risk for children followed the order RA2 > CA3 > CA4 > RA3 > CA2, and for adults, RA2 > CA3. Ultimately, the strategy of comparing the behavior of P and As in the soils of this study proved to be efficient in showing that there are no major risks to humans and the environment in the investigated area. However, periodic monitoring of As bioavailability in these areas is recommended.

Artisanal gold mining in the eastern Amazon: Environmental and human health risks of mercury from different mining methods

Artisanal gold (Au) mining is the activity with the highest consumption of mercury (Hg) and the main source of environmental contamination by this element, which is a recurring problem in the Amazon. In this study, contamination and risks caused by Hg to the environment and human health were evaluated in different forms of artisanal Au mining in the Brazilian Amazon. For this purpose, 25 samples of soils and tailings were collected in three types of artisanal mine and one native forest. The mineralogical analysis revealed that there is no occurrence of minerals constituted by Hg. However, the concentrations of Hg in underground mining tailings were very high and exceeded the prevention values established by Brazilian environmental legislation, indicating elevated risk to the ecosystem and human health. The enrichment factor indicated that underground mining tailings are enriched by Hg, submitted to cyanidation or not, suggesting anthropogenic source for the high concentrations of Hg. The geoaccumulation index and the contamination factor showed that the colluvial mining tailings are moderately contaminated, and the tailings from underground mining are highly to extremely contaminated, leading to very high risks to the environment and the health of children from the region. These results represent a great contribution to the Amazon, since they provide subsidies for the definition of policies to mitigate environmental contamination and associated risks.

Exploring human health risk assessment based on the screening of primary targeted metal and chemical balance simulation of ionic speciation in an industrial area, China

A comprehensive human health risk assessment methodology based on major hazard element screening and morphological evolution simulation is proposed. The primary targeted metal (PTM) screened by classical health risk assessment was introduced into chemical balance simulation to obtain speciation distribution and corresponding risk. According to the results of risk assessment of morphological evolution of primary targeted metal (PTM), a potential methodology for the remediation is proposed, which could reduce the risk level efficiently and quickly by changing the pH of soil environment with additional acid and alkali substances. A case study was performed in a dye factory in Suzhou city, Jiangsu Province, China. The results of classical health risk assessment showed that the regional health risk index for children exceeded tolerance value of 1, in which Cr accounted for high risk level of 61%. Chemical balance simulation results showed that CrO₄^2- and CaCrO₄ had the highest risk index, and the change of pH value would affect the proportion of CrO₄^2- and CaCrO₄ in Cr⁶⁺ ionic speciation, which may indirectly change the risk level. It is recommended to adjust the pH of the soil environment to quickly reduce regional human health risk. This study will provide a theoretical basis for public health protection and site restoration management.

Enzyme activities and microbial functional diversity in metal(loid) contaminated soils near to a copper smelter

The monitoring of soil metal(loid) contamination is of global significance due to deleterious effects that metal(loid)s have on living organisms. Soil biological properties such as enzyme activities (EAs) are good indicators of metal(loid) contamination due to their high sensitivity, fast response, and low-cost. Here, the effect of metal(loid) contamination on physicochemical properties and microbial functionality in soils sampled from within 10 km of a Cu smelter is investigated. Soil composite samples were randomly taken within 2, 4, 6, 8 and10 km zones from a mining industry Cu smelter. The EAs of dehydrogenase (DHA), arylsulfatase (ARY), β-glucosidase, urease, and arginine ammonification (AA) were studied as indicators of metal(loid) contamination, which included the ecological dose (ED₅₀) with respect to Cu and As contents. The community level physiological profile (CLPP), functional diversity, and catabolic evenness were evaluated based on the C-substrate utilisation. All EAs decreased in zones with high degrees of metal(loid) contamination, which also had low TOC and clay contents, reflecting long term processes of soil degradation. Positive and strong relationships between EAs and TOC were found. DHA and ARY activities decreased by approximately 85-90% in highly metal(loid) contaminated soils. DHA and AA showed significant ED₅₀ values associated with available Cu (112.8 and 121.6 mg Cu_DTPA kg^-1, respectively) and total As contents (30.8 and 31.8 mg As kg^-1, respectively). The CLPP showed different metabolic profiles along the metal(loid) contamination gradients. Long-term stress conditions in soils close to industrial areas resulted in the decreasing of general biological activity, catabolic capacity, and functional diversity.

Quantifying and predicting ecological and human health risks for binary heavy metal pollution accidents at the watershed scale using Bayesian Networks

The accidental leakage of industrial wastewater containing heavy metals from enterprises poses great risks to resident health, social instability, and ecological safety. During 2005-2018, heavy metal mixed pollution accidents comprised approximately 33% of the major environmental ones in China. A Bayesian Networks-based probabilistic approach is developed to quantitatively predict ecological and human health risks for heavy metal mixed pollution accidents at the watershed scale. To estimate the probability distributions of joint ecological exposure once a heavy metal mixed pollution accident occurs, a Copula-based joint exposure calculation method, comprised of a hydro-dynamic model, emergent heavy metal pollution transport model, and the Copula functions, is embedded. This approach was applied to the risk assessment of acute Cr⁶⁺-Hg²⁺ mixed pollution accidents at 76 electroplating enterprises in 24 risk sub-watersheds of the Dongjiang River downstream watershed. The results indicated that nine sub-watersheds created high ecological risks, while only five created high human health risks. In addition, the ecological and human health risk levels were highest in the tributary (the Xizhijiang River), while the ecological risk was more critical in the river network, and the human health risk was more serious in the mainstream of the Dongjiang River. The quantitative risk assessment provides a substantial support to incident prevention and control, risk management, as well as regulatory decision making for electroplating enterprises.

Environmental and human health risks of arsenic in gold mining areas in the eastern Amazon

Knowledge of arsenic (As) levels in gold (Au) mining areas in the Amazon is critical for determining environmental risks and the health of the local population, mainly because this region has the largest mineral potential in Brazil and one of the largest in the world. The objective of this study was to assess the environmental and human health risks of As in tailings from Au exploration in the eastern Amazon. Samples were collected from soils and tailings from different exploration forms from 25 points, and the total concentration, pollution indexes and human health risk were determined. Concentrations of As were very high in all exploration areas, especially in tailings, whose maximum value reached 10,000 mg kg^-1, far above the investigation value established by the Brazilian National Council of the Environment, characterizing a polluted area with high environmental risk. Exposure based on the daily intake of As demonstrated a high health risk for children and adults, whose non-carcinogenic risk indexes of 17.8, extremely above the acceptable limit (1.0) established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. High levels of As in reactive fractions in underground, cyanidation, and colluvium mining areas, as well as extremely high gastric and intestinal bioaccessibility were found, suggesting that high levels may be absorbed by the local population. The results show that the study area is highly polluted through Au mining activities, putting the environment and population health at risk, and that there is an urgent need for intervention by the environmental control agencies for remediation.
