Abstract
Understanding the relationships between ultrafine particle (UFP) exposure, socioeconomic status (SES), and sustainable transportation accessibility in Toronto, Canada is crucial for promoting public health, addressing environmental justice, and ensuring transportation equity. We conducted a large-scale mobile measurement campaign and employed a gradient boost model to generate exposure surfaces using land use, built environment, and meteorological conditions. The Ontario Marginalization Index was used to quantify various indicators of social disadvantage for Toronto's neighborhoods. Our findings reveal that people in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas experience elevated UFP exposures. We highlight significant disparities in accessing sustainable transportation, particularly in areas with higher ethnic concentrations. When factoring in daily mobility, UFP exposure disparities in disadvantaged populations are further exacerbated. Furthermore, individuals who do not generate emissions themselves are consistently exposed to higher UFPs, with active transportation users experiencing the highest UFP exposures both at home and at activity locations. Finally, we proposed a novel index, the Community Prioritization Index (CPI), incorporating three indicators, including air quality, social disadvantage, and sustainable transportation. This index identifies neighborhoods experiencing a triple burden, often situated near major infrastructure hubs with high diesel truck activity and lacking greenspace, marking them as high-priority areas for policy action and targeted interventions.

Abstract
Dengue fever is a prevalent mosquito-borne disease that burdens communities in subtropical and tropical regions. Dengue transmission is ecologically complex; several environmental conditions are critical for the spatial and temporal distribution of dengue. Interannual variability and spatial distribution of dengue transmission are well-studied; however, the effects of land cover and use are yet to be investigated. Therefore, we applied an explainable artificial intelligence (AI) approach to integrate the EXtreme Gradient Boosting and Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) methods to evaluate spatial patterns of the residences of reported dengue cases based on various fine-scale land-cover land-use types, Shannon's diversity index, and household density in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, between 2014 and 2015. We found that the proportions of general roads and residential areas play essential roles in dengue case residences with nonlinear patterns. Agriculture-related features were negatively associated with dengue incidence. Additionally, Shannon's diversity index showed a U-shaped relationship with dengue infection, and SHAP dependence plots showed different relationships between various land-use types and dengue incidence. Finally, landscape-based prediction maps were generated from the best-fit model and highlighted high-risk zones within the metropolitan region. The explainable AI approach delineated precise associations between spatial patterns of the residences of dengue cases and diverse land-use characteristics. This information is beneficial for resource allocation and control strategy modification.

Abstract
The solar absorption spectrometry in the infrared spectral region, using high-resolution Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, has been established as a powerful tool in atmospheric science. These observations cannot be performed continuously, for example, clouds prevent observations. On the other hand, chemical transport models give continuously data. Their results depend on the knowledge of emission inventories, the chemistry involved, and the meteorological fields, yielding to potential biases between measurements and simulations. In our study we concentrated on Formaldehyde (HCHO) and used machine learning approach to fill the gap between the observations, performed on an irregular time scale and having their measurement lacks, and model data, giving continuous data, but having potential variable biases. The proposed machine learning approach is based on the Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) algorithm and created by using GEOS-Chem simulations, meteorological fields, emission inventory, and is referred to as the GEOS-Chem-LightGBM model. The results of established GEOS-Chem-LightGBM model have generated consistent HCHO predictions with the ground-based FTIR and satellite (OMI and TROPOMI) observations. In order to understand the GEOS-Chem model to measurement discrepancy, we have investigated the contribution of each input variable to GEOS-Chem-LightGBM model HCHO predictions through the SHapely Additive exPlanations (SHAP) approach. We found that the GEOS-Chem model underestimates the sensitivities of HCHO total column to most photochemical variables, contributing to lower amplitudes of diurnal cycle and seasonal cycle by the GEOS-Chem model. By correcting the model-to-measurement discrepancy, the sensitivities of HCHO total column to all variables by the GEOS-Chem-LightGBM became to be in good agreement with the FTIR observations. As a result, GEOS-Chem-LightGBM model has significantly improved the performance of HCHO predictions compared to the GEOS-Chem alone. The proposed GEOS-Chem-LightGBM model can be extendible to other atmospheric constituents obtained by various measurement techniques and platforms, and is expected to have wide applications.

Abstract
Within-city ultrafine particle (UFP) concentrations vary sharply since they are influenced by various factors. We developed prediction models for short-term UFP exposures using street-level images collected by a camera installed on a vehicle rooftop, paired with air quality measurements conducted during a large-scale mobile monitoring campaign in Toronto, Canada. Convolutional neural network models were trained to extract traffic and built environment features from images. These features, along with regional air quality and meteorology data were used to predict short-term UFP concentration as a continuous and categorical variable. A gradient boost model for UFP as a continuous variable achieved R2 = 0.66 and RMSE = 9391.8#/cm3 (mean values for 10-fold cross-validation). The model predicting categorical UFP achieved accuracies for "Low" and "High" UFP of 77 and 70%, respectively. The presence of trucks and other traffic parameters were associated with higher UFPs, and the spatial distribution of elevated short-term UFP followed the distribution of single-unit trucks. This study demonstrates that pictures captured on urban streets, associated with regional air quality and meteorology, can adequately predict short-term UFP exposure. Capturing the spatial distribution of high-frequency short-term UFP spikes in urban areas provides crucial information for the management of near-road air pollution hot spots.

Abstract
PURPOSE One of the leading causes of violent fatalities around the world is road traffic collisions, and pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users with respect to such incidents. Since walking is highly promoted in urban areas to alleviate motor-vehicle externalities, it is paramount to understand the causes associated with vehicle-pedestrian collisions and their severity to provide safe environments. Although traffic enforcement cameras can address vehicle-vehicle collisions, little is known about their effectiveness with respect to vehicle-pedestrian incidents. METHODOLOGY In this study, we trained a set of machine learning models to forecast if a vehicle-pedestrian collision will turn into an injury or fatality, and the most suitable model was used to investigate the contributing features associated with such events with emphasis on the impact of traffic enforcement cameras. In addition to traffic enforcement camera proximity, features associated with the collision, weather, vehicle, victim, and infrastructure are included in the model to reduce unobserved heterogeneity. RESULTS Results show that a Linear Discriminant Analysis model surpasses other machine learning models considering the evaluation metrics. Results reveal that the age and gender of the victim, the involvement of larger vehicles in the collision, and the quality of the illumination are the causes associated with pedestrian fatalities. On the other hand, involvement of motorcycles and collisions that occurred in densely populated locations are the causes associated with pedestrian injuries. CONCLUSIONS This investigation demonstrates how to articulate machine learning into a vehicle-pedestrian crash analysis to understand the direction and magnitude of covariates in the corresponding severity outcome. Furthermore, it highlights the remarkable effect that traffic enforcement cameras and other features have on vehicle-pedestrian crash severity. These results provide actionable guidance for educational campaigns, enhanced traffic engineering, and infrastructure improvements that could be implemented in the analyzed region to provide safer transportation.

Abstract
Nitrogen dioxide is one of the pollutants with the most significant health effects. Advanced information on its concentration in the air can help to monitor and control further consequences more effectively, while also making it easier to apply preventive and mitigating measures. Machine learning technologies with available methods and capabilities, combined with the geospatial dimension, can perform predictive analyses with higher accuracy and, as a result, can serve as a supportive tool for productive management. One of the most advanced machine learning algorithms, Bidirectional convolutional LSTM, is being used in ongoing work to predict the concentration of nitrogen dioxide. The model has been validated to perform more accurate spatiotemporal analysis based on the integration of temporal and geospatial factors. The analysis was carried out according to two scenarios developed on the basis of selected features using data from the city of Madrid for the periods January-June 2019 and January-June 2020. Evaluation of the model's performance was conducted using the Root Mean Square Error and the Mean Absolute Error which emphasises the superiority of the proposed model over the reference models. In addition, the significance of a feature selection technique providing improved accuracy was underlined. In terms of execution time, due to the complexity of the Bidirectional convolutional LSTM architecture, convergence and generalisation of the data took longer, resulting in the superiority of the reference models.

Abstract
In East Asia, air quality has been recognized as an important public health problem. In particular, the surface concentrations of air pollutants are closely related to human life. This study aims to develop models for estimating high spatial resolution surface concentrations of NO2 and O3 from TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) data in East Asia. The machine learning was adopted by fusion of various satellite-based variables, numerical model-based meteorological variables, and land-use variables. Four machine learning approaches-Support Vector Regression (SVR), Random Forest (RF), Extreme Gradient Boost (XGB), and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM)-were evaluated and compared with Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) as a base statistical method. This study also modeled the NO2 and O3 concentrations over the ocean surface (i.e., land model for scheme 1 and ocean model for scheme 2). The estimated surface concentrations were validated through three cross-validation approaches (i.e., random, temporal, and spatial). The results showed that the NO2 model produced R2 of 0.63-0.70 and normalized root-mean-square-error (nRMSE) of 38.3-42.2% and the O3 model resulted in R2 of 0.65-0.78 and nRMSE of 19.6-24.7% for scheme 1. The indirect validation based on the stations near the coastline for scheme 2 showed slight decrease (~0.3-2.4%) in nRMSE when compared to scheme 1. The contributions of input variables to the models were analyzed based on SHapely Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values. The NO2 vertical column density among the TROPOMI-derived variables showed the largest contribution in both the NO2 and O3 models.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies have revealed the associations of air pollutants and meteorological factors with a range of mental health conditions. However, little is known about local explanations and global understanding on the importance and effect of input features in the complex system of environmental stressors - mental disorders (MDs), especially for exposure to air pollution mixture. In this study, we combined deep learning neural networks (DLNNs) with SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) to predict the illness risk of MDs on the population level, and then provided explanations for risk factors. The modeling system, which was trained on day-by-day hospital outpatient visits of two major hospitals in Nanjing, China from 2013/07/01 through 2019/02/28, visualized the time-varying prediction, contributing factors, and interaction effects of informative features. Our results suggested that NO2, SO2, and CO made outstanding contributions in magnitude of feature attributions under circumstances of mixed air pollutants. In particular, NO2 at high concentration level was associated with an increase in illness risk of MDs, and the maximum and mean absolute SHAP value were approximated to 10 and 2 as a local and global measure of feature importance, respectively. It presented a marginally antagonistic effect for two pairs of gaseous pollutants, i.e., NO2 vs. SO2 and CO vs. NO2. In contrast, CO and SO2 displayed the opposite direction of feature effects to the rise of observed concentrations, but an apparent synergistic effect was obviously captured. The primary risk factors driving a sharp increase in acute attack or exacerbation of MDs were also identified by depicting prediction paths of time-series samples. We believe that the significance of coupling accurate predictions from DLNNs with interpretable explanations of why a prediction is completed has broad applicability throughout the field of environmental health.

Abstract
This study harnesses the power of mobile data in developing a spatial model for predicting black carbon (BC) concentrations within one of the most heavily populated regions in the Middle East and North Africa MENA region, Greater Cairo Region (GCR) in Egypt. A mobile data collection campaign was conducted in GCR to collect BC measurements along specific travel routes. In total, 3,300 km were travelled across a widespread 525 km of routes. Reported average BC values were around 20 µg/m3, announcing an alarming order of magnitude value when compared to the maximum reported values in similar studies. A bi-directional stepwise land use regression (LUR) model was developed to select the best combination of explanatory variables and generate an exposure surface for BC, in addition to a number of machine learning models (random forest gradient boost, light gradient boost model (LightGBM), Keras neural network (NN)). Data from 7 air quality (AQ) stations were compared-in terms of mean square error (MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE)-with predictions from the LUR and the NN model. The NN model estimated higher BC concentrations in the downtown areas, while lower concentrations are estimated for the peripheral area at the east side of the city. Such results shed light on the credibility of the LUR models in generating a general spatial trend of BC concentrations while the superiority of NN in BC accuracy estimation (0.023 vs 0.241 in terms of MSE and 0.12 vs 0.389 in terms of MAE; of NN vs LUR respectively).

Abstract
Traffic congestion and smog are hot topics in recent years. This study analyzes the impacts of road traffic characteristic parameters on urban air quality quantitatively based on aerosol optical thickness (AOD) and geographical weighted regression (GWR) models, including the road network density, road area occupancy, intersection number, and bus network density as main factors. There are some major research findings. Firstly, there exists a strong positive correlation between the peak congestion delay index (PCDI) and air quality, the correlation has R2 values of up to 0.4962 (R 0.70). Secondly, GWR refines the local spatial changes in the AOD and the road parameters, and the correlation R2 based GWR model all above 0.6. The correlation between AOD and the road area occupancy was the highest, and the correlations with the bus network density and the intersections number were higher than that with the road network density. Thus, bus route planning, bus emission reduction, road network planning, and signal timing (at intersections) have a greater impact on air quality than other policy, especially in areas with traffic jams. The results of this study could provide theoretical support for traffic planning and traffic control, and is promising in practice.

Abstract
Air pollution and its consequences are negatively impacting on the world population and the environment, which converts the monitoring and forecasting air quality techniques as essential tools to combat this problem. To predict air quality with maximum accuracy, along with the implemented models and the quantity of the data, it is crucial also to consider the dataset types. This study selected a set of research works in the field of air quality prediction and is concentrated on the exploration of the datasets utilised in them. The most significant findings of this research work are: (1) meteorological datasets were used in 94.6% of the papers leaving behind the rest of the datasets with a big difference, which is complemented with others, such as temporal data, spatial data, and so on; (2) the usage of various datasets combinations has been commenced since 2009; and (3) the utilisation of open data have been started since 2012, 32.3% of the studies used open data, and 63.4% of the studies did not provide the data.
