Abstract
The impact of fluorine on plants remains poorly understood. We examined duckweed growth in extracts of soil contaminated with fluorine leached from chicken manure. Additionally, fluorine levels were analyzed in fresh manure, outdoor-stored manure, and soil samples at varying distances from the manure pile. Fresh manure contained 37-48 mg F- × kg-1, while soil extracts contained 2.1 to 4.9 mg F- × kg-1. We evaluated the physiological effects of fluorine on duckweed cultured on soil extracts or in 50% Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with fluorine concentrations matching those in soil samples (2.1 to 4.9 mg F- × L-1), as well as at 0, 4, and 210 mg × L-1. Duckweed exposed to fluorine displayed similar toxicity symptoms whether in soil extracts or supplemented medium. Fluoride at concentrations of 2.1 to 4.9 mg F- × L-1 reduced the intact chlorophyll content, binding the porphyrin ring at position 32 without affecting Mg2+. This reaction resulted in chlorophyll a absorption peak shifted towards shorter wavelengths and formation of a new band of the F--chlorophyll a complex at λ = 421 nm. Moreover, plants exposed to low concentrations of fluorine exhibited increased activities of aminolevulinic acid dehydratase and chlorophyllase, whereas the activities of both enzymes sharply declined when the fluoride concentration exceeded 4.9 mg × L-1. Consequently, fluorine damages chlorophyll a, disrupts the activity of chlorophyll-metabolizing enzymes, and diminishes the plant growth rate, even when the effects of these disruptions are too subtle to be discerned by the naked human eye.

Abstract
Kombucha is prepared by fermenting sugared green or black tea with a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY). Some of the bacteria within the SCOBY are known to form exopolysaccharides (EPS) from sucrose. However, it is yet unknown whether water-soluble EPS are formed in kombucha, and if so, which specific EPS are present. Therefore, different kombucha samples were prepared by fermentation of green and black tea with SCOBYs from different manufacturers. Subsequently, the EPS were isolated and characterized by using various chromatographic methods, partial enzymatic hydrolyses and NMR spectroscopy. It was demonstrated that levans with a varying degree of branching at position O1 (4.3-7.9 %) are present, while only trace amounts of glucans were detected. Furthermore, levans isolated from kombucha had a comparably low molecular weight and the content of levan within the kombucha samples varied from 33 to 562 mg levan/L kombucha. Therefore, our study demonstrated that levans are the main EPS type in kombucha and that levan amounts and structures varied when different starter cultures and ingredients were used. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive data set on the structural variability of levans from kombucha.

Abstract
Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) plant is fluoride (F) hyperaccumulator. The decomposition of pruned litter in tea plantations releases a large amount of F back into the soil. However, the effect of pruned litter return on soil F bioavailability has remained unclear. We investigated the decomposition dynamics of pruned litter from four tea varieties (Chuannong Huangyazao, Chuancha No. 3, Chuanmu No. 217 and C. sinensis 'Fuding Dabaicha') and its effect on soil F bioavailability. The decomposition of pruned litter occurred in two distinct periods, with an early period of rapid decomposition during the first 120 days, releasing 26-33 % of F, followed by a late period of slow decomposition during 120-360 days, releasing 2-9 % of F. The decomposition of pruned litter enhanced soil F bioavailability by increasing the concentrations of soil water-soluble F (WS-F), exchangeable F (EX-F), and organic matter-bound F (OR-F). The increase in WS-F, EX-F, and OR-F concentrations was higher than the amount of F released from pruned litter, suggesting that the increases in soil F availability did not solely originate from the release of F from pruned litter. The findings reveal the pathway of pruned litter decomposition priming soil F bioavailability through both the direct release of F and transformation from other fractions. Furthermore, the traits (C, N, lignin, and cellulose) of pruned litter from different tea varieties were the dominant factors controlling F release and soil F bioavailability. Compared with other tea varieties, the pruned litter of Chuanmu No. 217 with low lignin and cellulose content promoted higher mass loss and F release, resulting in the highest soil F bioavailability. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the accumulation of bioavailable F in soil. These insights offer valuable support for devising effective management strategies for the incorporation of pruned litter into soil.

Abstract
The tea plant accumulates elevated levels of fluoride (F) from environmental sources. Drinking tea containing high F levels poses a potential threat to human health. Selenium (Se) was applied by foliar spray to investigate its effects on F accumulation and physiology in tea plant. Foliar application of different forms of Se, i.e., Na2SeO3, Kappa-selenocarrageenan, Selenomethionine and Nanoselenium, reduced F content in tea leaves by 10.17 %-44.28 %, 16.12 %-35.41 %, 22.19 %-45.99 % and 22.24 %-43.82 %, respectively. Foliar spraying Se could increase F accumulation in pectin through increasing pectin content and pectin demethylesterification to bind more F in the cell wall, which decreased the proportion of water-soluble fluoride in tea leaves. Application of Se significantly decreased the contents of chromium (39.6 %-72.0 %), cadmium (48.3 %-84.4 %), lead (2.2 %-44.4 %) and copper (14.1 %-44.6 %) in tea leaves. Foliar spraying various forms of Se dramatically increased the Se content and was efficiently transformed into organic Se accounting for more than 80 % in tea leaves. All Se compounds increased peroxidase activity by 3.3 %-35.5 % and catalase activity by 2.6 %-99.4 %, reduced malondialdehyde content by 5.6 %-37.1 %, and increased the contents of chlorophyll by 0.65 %-31.8 %, carotenoids by 0.24 %-27.1 %, total catechins by 1.6 %-21.0 %, EGCG by 4.4 %-17.6 % and caffeine by 9.1 %-28.6 %. These results indicated that Se application could be served as a potential efficient and safe strategy diminishing the concentration of F in tea leaves.

Abstract
A wide variety of bacteria are present in soil but in rhizospheric area, the majority of microbes helps plant in defending diseases and facilitate nutrient uptake. These microorganisms are supported by plants and they are known as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The PGPRs have the potential to replace chemical fertilizers in a way that is more advantageous for the environment. Fluoride (F) is one of the highly escalating, naturally present contaminants that can be hazardous for PGPRs because of its antibacterial capacity. The interactions of F with different bacterial species in groundwater systems are still not well understood. However, the interaction of PGPR with plants in the rhizosphere region reduces the detrimental effects of pollutants and increases plants' ability to endure abiotic stress. Many studies reveal that PGPRs have developed F defense mechanisms, which include efflux pumps, Intracellular sequestration, enzyme modifications, enhanced DNA repair mechanism, detoxification enzymes, ion transporter/antiporters, F riboswitches, and genetic mutations. These resistance characteristics are frequently discovered by isolating PGPRs from high F-contaminated areas or by exposing cells to fluoride in laboratory conditions. Numerous studies have identified F-resistant microorganisms that possess additional F transporters and duplicates of the well-known targets of F. Plants are prone to F accumulation despite the soil's low F content, which may negatively affect their growth and development. PGPRs can be used as efficient F bioremediators for the soil environment. Environmental biotechnology focuses on creating genetically modified rhizobacteria that can degrade F contaminants over time. The present review focuses on a thorough systemic analysis of contemporary biotechnological techniques, such as gene editing and manipulation methods, for improving plant-microbe interactions for F remediation and suggests the importance of PGPRs in improving soil health and reducing the detrimental effects of F toxicity. The most recent developments in the realm of microbial assistance in the treatment of F-contaminated environments are also highlighted.

Abstract
Tea plants grown in high-latitude areas are often damaged by extreme freezing temperatures in winter, leading to huge economic losses. Here, the physiological and gene expression characteristics of two tea cultivars (Xinyang No. 10 (XY10), a freezing-tolerant cultivar and Fudingdabaicha (FDDB), a freezing-sensitive cultivar) during overwintering in northern China were studied to better understand the regulation mechanisms of tea plants in response to natural freezing stress. Samples were collected at a chill (D1), freezing (D2) and recovery (D3) temperature in winter. TEM analysis of integrated leaf ultrastructure at D2 revealed lower malondialdehyde and relative electrical conductivity in XY10 than in FDDB, with serious cell structure damage in the latter, indicating XY10 was more resistant to freezing stress. Differential gene expression analysis among the different samples over winter time highlighted the following gene functions in cell wall metabolism (CesAs, COBLs, XTHs, PGs, PMEs), transcription factors (ERF1B and MYC2), and signal transduction (CDPKs and CMLs). The expression pattern of cellulose and pectin-related genes suggested higher accumulation of cellulosic and pectic materials in the cell wall of XY10, agreeing with the results of cell wall and its components. These results indicated that under the regulation of cell wall genes, the freezing-resistant tea cultivar can better maintain a well-knit cell wall structure with sufficient substances to survive natural freezing damage. This study demonstrated the crucial role of cell wall in tea plant resistance to natural freezing stress and provided important candidate genes for breeding of freezing-resistant tea cultivars.

Abstract
Crops grown in areas contaminated by industrial and agricultural fluorine (F) have gained increasing attention, however F levels in different vegetables and lettuce cultivars are rarely reported. In situ-field experiment was designed to investigate the concentration, translocation, and health risks of F in 20 vegetable species and 25 lettuce cultivars. After the growth of 150 d for vegetables and 60 d for lettuce, F concentration (12.83-138.07 mg kg-1), translocation factor (0.16-6.32), and bio-concentration factor (1.90-13.73) varied significantly between vegetable species and lettuce cultivars. According to the hazard quotient values (based on the reference dose of F), all the vegetable species appears to pose no risk to human health, while 60% of the lettuce cultivars present potential health risks to children. Therefore, the limit value of F in vegetables for adults and children should be enacted in the future. Moreover, cabbage, green radish, spinach, leaf mustard, and Frisee lettuce (Huayu) were considered as a safe dietary product. These findings contributed to the safe cultivation of vegetables and the control of fluorosis in the areas contaminated by industrial and agricultural activities.

Abstract
Fluorine is a necessary element for human, which is closely related to life activities, such as metabolism of teeth and bone tissue. A small amount of fluoride ions can promote the strengthen of our body. However, a large amount of fluoride ions will damage the human immune system to produce organ diseases. Sensitive and rapid detection of fluoride ions has attracted great interests for researchers. In this work, a reactive fluorescent probe SCP for detection of fluoride ions with high quantum yield was designed and synthesized based on the carbazole ring. Subsequently, the photophysical properties of the probe SCP were carefully studied. At last, SCP performed 62.8% quantum yield in physiological condition, excellent ability of quantitative analysis, well selectivity, and distinguishing features for HepG2 cell imaging.

Abstract
The freeze-dried (FD) edible roses with high content of bioactive substances and superior flavor have been favored by consumers. Nevertheless, the development of freeze-dried rose industry has been plagued by a long drying time and low efficiency. This study investigated the effects of ultrasonic pretreatment (UP) in multi-frequency modes and electro-infrared pretreatment (EIP) prior to FD on polyphenol accumulation and drying characteristics of roses. The mechanism was explored by the changes in microstructure, equivalent circuit parameters, and phenol identifications of rose. The results showed that the FD time of roses decreased by 26 % after ultrasonic-infrared sequential synergistic pretreatment (UP + EIP) due to the damage of cell membrane permeability from UP. The quality attributes of UP + EIP products including color, phenols, and antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging rates) remarkably improved. UP + EIP significantly (p < 0.05) increased the content of polyphenols, namely quercetin-3β-d-glucoside, phlorizin, procyanidin B2, gallicacid, and rutin in the FD roses quantified by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-qTOF-MS/MS). Therefore, UP + EIP is an effective pretreatment method for shortening FD time and producing high-quality FD rose products with enhanced polyphenol content.

Abstract
The rapid and non-destructive detection of moisture in withering leaves is an unsolved problem because the leaves are stacked together and have random orientation. To address this issue, this study aimed to establish more robust and accurate models. The performance of front side, back side and multi-region models were compared, and the front side model showed the worst transferability. Therefore, five effective wavelength (EW) selection algorithms were combined with a successive projection algorithm (SPA) to select EWs. It was found that the shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA) combined with SPA was the best method for the front side model for moisture analyses. Based on the selected EWs, the extreme learning machine (ELM) became the model with the best self-verification result. Subsequently, moisture distribution maps of withering leaves were successfully generated. Considering the processing demand of withering leaves, local region models developed based on partial least squares and the SFLA-SPA method were applied to predict the moisture of withering leaves in the local and stacked region. The results showed that the RPD, Rcv and Rp values were above 1.6, 0.870 and 0.897, respectively. These results provide a useful reference for the non-destructive detection of moisture in withering leaves.
