Ecotoxicity of polybrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47) on a meiobenthic community with special emphasis on nematodes: Taxonomic and trophic diversity assessment

Comparison of photocatalysis and photolysis of 2,2,4,4-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47): Operational parameters, kinetic studies, and data validation using three modern machine learning models

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are halogenated organic compounds that are among the major pollutants of water, and there is an urgent need for their removal. This work compared the application of two techniques, i.e., photocatalytic reaction (PCR) and photolysis (PL), for 2,2,4,4- tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) degradation. Although a limited degradation of BDE-47 was observed by photolysis (LED/N₂), photocatalytic oxidation by using TiO₂/LED/N₂ proved to be effective in the degradation of BDE-47. The use of a photocatalyst enhanced the extent of BDE-47 degradation by around 10% at optimum conditions in anaerobic systems. Experimental results were systematically validated through modeling with three new and powerful Machine Learning (ML) approaches, including Gradient Boosted Decision Tree (GBDT), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Symbolic Regression (SBR). Four statistical criteria (Coefficient of Determination (R²), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Average Relative Error (ARER), and Absolute Error (ABER)) were calculated for model validation. Among the applied models, the developed GBDT was the desirable model for predicting the remaining concentration (Ce) of BDE-47 for both processes. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) results confirmed that BDE-47 mineralization required additional time than its degradation in both PCR and PL systems. The kinetic study demonstrated that BDE-47 degradation for both processes followed the pseudo-first-order form of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) model. More importantly, the calculated electrical energy consumption of photolysis was shown to be ten percent higher than that for photocatalysis, possibly due to the higher irradiation time required in direct photolysis, which in turn increases electricity consumption. This study is useful in proposing a feasible and promising treatment process for the degradation of BDE-47.

The effect of 2,2',4,4'-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) on locomotor behaviour and muscle physiology of the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus

The 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) is the predominant congener of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and it is also a persistent organic pollutant that with a higher detection rate in samples from environment and animals. To date, there have been few studies of the effects of BDE-47 on locomotion in sea cucumbers. In this study, we investigated the influence of different concentrations of BDE-47 (low: 0.1 μg/L; moderate: 1.0 μg/L; high: 10.0 μg/L) on locomotion of Apostichopus japonicus and evaluated changes in their muscle physiology using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The behavioural studies showed that the average and maximum velocity of movement decreased significantly in both the moderate and high BDE-47 groups after 1 day of exposure. In addition, levels of 55 metabolites were identified and characterized in the longitudinal muscle of A. japonicus exposed to BDE-47. The alteration of taurine and norepinephrine levels indicated that BDE-47 had drastic physiological effects on the longitudinal muscle of A. japonicus.

Evaluation of heavy metals contamination and pollution indices levels in surface sediments of the Bizerte coastal line, Tunisia

Heavy metal concentrations in surface sediments collected from 17 stations samples in Bizerte coastal line were determined in order to evaluate the contamination status in the region. Heavy metal concentrations (mg/kg) of Bizerte coast line followed the decreasing trend of Fe > Pb > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Co > Cd. The pollution degree of the surface sediment collected from 17 samples station in Bizerte coast line by heavy metals was evaluated on the basis of pollution indices (EF, Igeo, CF, PLI and CD). Results of Igeo, EF, CF, PLI and DC demonstrated that pollution levels of Pb and Cd were moderate, which should require more attentiveness as main pollution factors. However, no pollution was found for Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Co and Mn. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to identify the influence of anthropogenic activities on the surface sediment.

Developmental exposure to the A6-pesticide causes changes in tyrosine hydroxylase gene expression, neurochemistry, and locomotors behavior in larval zebrafish

In recent years, the increase in the synthesis of biopesticides for alternative agricultural uses has necessitated the study of their impacts. Among these compounds, several of them are known to exert endocrine-disrupting effects causing deregulation of a variety of physiological functions affecting cell signaling pathways involved in neural cell differentiation leading to developmental neurotoxicity. In this current paper, we thus determined the impact of the biopesticide A6 on zebrafish larvae, which is structurally linked to estrogenic endocrine disruptors. The objective of this study was to define the toxicity of A6, the mechanisms responsible, and to evaluate its effects on the locomotors activity at nanomolar concentrations (0, 0.5, 5, and 50 nM). We show through its blue fluorescence properties that A6 accumulates in different parts of the body as intestine, adipose tissue, muscle, yolk sac and head. We display also that A6 disrupt the development and affects the function of the central nervous system, especially the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in dopaminergic neurons. We studied whether A6 disturbs the target genes expression and recorded that it downregulated genes embroiled in TH expression, suggesting that A6's neurotoxic effect may be the result of its binding propinquity to the estrogen receptor.

Diuron environmental levels effects on marine nematodes: Assessment of ecological indices, taxonomic diversity, and functional traits

Coastal marine systems are the most sensitive zones to emerging pollutants. The present study aims to investigate the effect of Diuron on the meiofaunal assemblages, collected from the Bizerte channel (Tunisia). Microcosm experiments were set up using four increasing Diuron concentrations [D1 (10 ng g^-1 dry weight (DW)), D2 (50 ng g^-1 DW), D3 (250 ng g^-1 DW) and (1250 ng g^-1 DW)] compared to non-contaminated sediments (controls) and all plots were incubated for 30 days. Our results show that Diuron-supplemented sediments provoked the significant decrease of meiofaunal abundance as well as a change in nematodes' diversity and structure composition. All univariate indices, as well as the cumulative k-dominance, were lower in the Diuron than the control plot. Additionally, the ordination of treatments according to the two-dimensional nMDS plots analysis showed a clear structural separation of the Diuron treated replicates from the controls based on the functional groups lists. These current data emphasize the utility of the use of biological traits in the detection of disturbances in the aquatic biotope.
