Ag NPs decorated C-TiO2/Cd0.5Zn0.5S Z-scheme heterojunction for simultaneous RhB degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

Copper-decorated strategy based on defect-rich NH2-MIL-125(Ti) boosts efficient photocatalytic degradation of methyl mercaptan under sunlight

Photocatalysis has received significant attention as a technology that can solve environmental problems. Metal-organic frameworks are currently being used as novel photocatalysts but are still limited by the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, low photogenerated electron migration efficiency and poor solar light utilization rate. In this work, a novel photocatalyst was successfully constructed by introducing Cu species into thermal activated mixed-ligand NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) via defect engineering strategy. The constructed defect structure not only provided 3D-interconnected gas transfer channels, but also offered suitable space to accommodate introduced Cu species. For the most effective photocatalyst 0.2Cu/80%NH2-MIL-125 (300 °C) with optimized Cu content, the photocatalytic degradation rate of CH3SH achieved 4.65 times higher than that of pristine NH2-MIL-125 under visible light (λ > 420 nm). At the same time, it showed great degradation efficiency under natural sunlight, 100 ppm CH3SH was completely removed within 25 min in full solar light illumination. The improved catalytic efficiency is mainly due to the synergistic effect of the integrated Schottky junction and rich-defective NH2-MIL-125, which improved the bandgap and band position, and thus facilitated the separation and transfer of the photo-generated carriers. This work provided a facile way to integrate Schottky junctions and rich-defective MOFs with high stability. Due to its excellent degradation performance under sunlight, it also offered a prospective strategy for rational design of high-efficiency catalysts applied in environmental technologies.

A rationally designed 3DTiO2@CdZnS heterojunction photocatalyst for effectively enhanced visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution

Hydrogen production with higher efficiency and lower cost is of great significance for the sustainable development of energy. Zinc cadmium sulfide (CZS) is gaining more attention owing to its excellent photocatalytic properties. However, its development is greatly limited due to photogenerated charge recombination. In this work, an innovative design with a unique 3D morphology was introduced by integrating 3DTiO2 into CZS to form a novel 3DTiO2/CZS heterojunction photocatalyst. As a result, the optimized composite achieved a very high hydrogen production rate of 75.38 mmol h-1 g-1 under visible light, which is 2.4 times higher than that of the original CZS. It can also be greatly demonstrated through photoelectrochemical tests that this unique 3D morphology contributes to the effective separation of electrons and holes, thus dramatically improving the photocatalytic activity of 3DTiO2/CZS composites. The 3DTiO2/CZS composite has a rational energy band structure, which makes it more favorable for the hydrogen precipitation reaction. It is believed that such a modification strategy based on 3DTiO2 can be applied to other similar photocatalysts as well for boosting hydrogen evolution.

Modification engineering of TiO2-based nanoheterojunction photocatalysts

Titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based photocatalysts have gained increasing attention for their versatile applications in organic degradation, hydrogen production, air purification, and CO2 reduction. Various TiO2-based heterojunction structures, including type I, type II, Schottky junction, Z-scheme, and S-scheme, have been extensively studied. The current research frontier is centered on the engineering modifications of TiO2-based nanoheterojunction photocatalysts, such as defect engineering, morphological engineering, crystal phase/facet engineering, and multijunction engineering. These modifications enhance carrier transport, separation, and light absorption, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance. Remarkably, this aspect has been less addressed in existing reviews. This review aims to fill this gap by focusing on the engineering modifications of TiO2-based nanoheterojunction photocatalysts. We delve into specific topics like oxygen vacancies, n-p homojunctions, and double defects. The review also systematically discusses the applications of multidimensional heterojunctions and examines carrier transport pathways in heterophase/facet junctions and their interactions with heterojunctions. A comprehensive summary of multijunction systems, including multi-Schottky junctions, semiconductor-based heterojunction-attached Schottky junctions, and multisemiconductor-based heterojunctions, is presented. Lastly, we outline future perspectives in this promising research field. This paper will assist researchers in constructing more efficient TiO2-based nanoheterojunction photocatalysts.

Visible-light-driven Oxygen Vacancy and Carbon Doping of C@TiO2-x Photocatalyst for Enhanced Pollutants Degradation Performance

Oxygen Vacancy (OVs) and carbon doping of the photocatalyst body will significantly enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. However, synchronous regulation of these two aspects is challenging. In this paper, a novel C@TiO2-x photocatalyst was designed by coupling the surface defect and doping engineering of titania, which can effectively remove rhodamine B (RhB) and has a relatively high performance with wide pH range, high photocatalytic activity and good stability. Within 90 minutes, the photocatalytic degradation rate of RhB by C@TiO2-x (94.1 % at 20 mg/L) is 28 times higher than that of pure TiO2 . Free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance techniques reveal that superoxide radicals (⋅O2- ) and photogenerated holes (h+ ) play key roles in the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. This study demonstrates the possibility of regulating photocatalysts to degrade pollutants in wastewater based on an integrated strategy.

Ag3PO4-anchored La2Ti2O7 nanorod as a Z-Scheme heterostructure composite with boosted photogenerated carrier separation and enhanced photocatalytic performance under natural sunlight

Developing wide spectra-responsive photocatalysts has attracted considerable attention in the photocatalytic technology to achieve excellent catalytic activity. Ag₃PO₄, with strong response to light spectra shorter than 530 nm, shows extremely outstanding photocatalytic oxidation ability. Unfortunately, the photocorrosion of Ag₃PO₄ is still the biggest obstacle to its application. Herein, the La₂Ti₂O₇ nanorod was used to anchor Ag₃PO₄ nanoparticles in this study, and a novel Z-Scheme La₂Ti₂O₇/Ag₃PO₄ heterostructure composite was constructed. Remarkably, the composite showed strong responsive to most of the spectra in natural sunlight. The Ag⁰ formed in-situ acted as the recombination center of photogenerated carriers, which promoted their efficient separation and contributed to the improved photocatalytic performance of the heterostructure. When the mass ratio of Ag₃PO₄ in the La₂Ti₂O₇/Ag₃PO₄ catalyst was 50%, the degradation rate constant of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), chloroquine phosphate (CQ), tetracycline (TC), and phenol under natural sunlight irradiation were 0.5923, 0.4463, 0.1399, 0.0493, and 0.0096 min^-1, respectively. Furthermore, the photocorrosion of the composite was greatly inhibited, 76.49% of CQ and 83.96% of RhB were still degraded after four cycles. Besides, the holes and O₂^•- played a significant role in RhB degradation, and it included multiple mechanisms of deethylation, deamination, decarboxylation, and cleavage of ring-structures. Moreover, the treated solution can also show safety to the water receiving environment. Overall, the synthesized Z-Scheme La₂Ti₂O₇/Ag₃PO₄ composite exhibited immense potential for removing various organic pollutants through photocatalytic technology under natural sunlight irradiation.

Novel Bi2WO6/ZnSnO3 heterojunction for the ultrasonic-vibration-driven piezocatalytic degradation of RhB

This study designed and prepared a new piezoelectric catalytic nanomaterial, Bi₂WO₆/ZnSnO₃, and applied it in piezocatalytic water purification. Results indicated that the composite had superior piezocatalytic efficiency and stability in rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under ultrasonic vibration. The Bi₂WO₆/ZnSnO₃ sample with 10% Bi₂WO₆ had the optimum activity with a degradation rate of 2.15 h^-1, which was 7.4 and 11.3 times that of ZnSnO₃ and Bi₂WO₆, respectively. Various characterizations were conducted to study the morphology, structure, and piezoelectric properties of the Bi₂WO₆/ZnSnO₃ composites and reveal the reasons for their improved piezocatalytic performance. Results showed that ZnSnO₃ cubes were dispersed throughout the surface of Bi₂WO₆ nanosheets, which enhanced the specific surface area and facilitated the piezocatalytic reaction. Additionally, type-II heterojunction structures formed at the contact interface of Bi₂WO₆ and ZnSnO₃, driving the migration of piezoelectric-induced electrons and holes. Accordingly, the separation efficiency of charge carriers improved, and the piezoelectric catalytic activity was significantly enhanced. This study may provide a potential composite catalyst and a promising idea for the design of highly efficient piezoelectric catalyst.

Introducing anthracene and amino groups into Ln-OFs for the photoreduction of Cr(vi) without additional photosensitizers or cocatalysts

The stable LCUH-100 was designed and synthesized, by incorporating chromophores into lanthanide MOFs, as a high-efficiency photocatalyst, which can rapidly and efficiently reduce Cr(vi) under visible-light irradiation and has good cycle stability.

Immobilization of photocatalytic materials for (waste)water treatment using 3D printing technology - advances and challenges

Photocatalysis has been considered a promising technology for the elimination of a wide range of pollutants in water. Various types of photocatalysts (i.e., homojunction, heterojunction, dual Z-scheme photocatalyst) have been developed in recent years to address the drawbacks of conventional photocatalysts, such as the large energy band gap and rapid recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and holes. However, there are still challenges in the design of photocatalytic reactors that limit their wider application for real (waste)water treatment, such as difficulties in their recovery and reuse from treated (waste)waters. 3D printing technologies have been introduced very recently for the immobilization of materials in novel photocatalytic reactor designs. The present review aims to summarize and discuss the advances and challenges in the application of various 3D printing technologies (i.e., stereolithography, inkjet printing, and direct ink writing) for the fabrication of stable photocatalytic materials for (waste)water treatment purposes. Furthermore, the limitations in the implementation of these technologies to design future generations of photocatalytic reactors have been critically discussed, and recommendations for future studies have been presented.

Fabrication of Ru-CoFe2O4/RGO hierarchical nanostructures for high-performance photoelectrodes to reduce hazards Cr(VI) into Cr(III) coupled with anodic oxidation of phenols

Dual-functional photo (electro)catalysis (PEC) is a key strategy for removing coexisting heavy metals and phenolic compounds from wastewater treatment systems. To design a PEC cell, it is crucial to use chemically stable and cost-effective bifunctional photocatalysts. The present study shows that ruthenium metallic nanoparticles decorated with CoFe₂O₄/RGO (Ru-CoFe₂O₄/RGO) are effective bifunctional photoelectrodes for the reduction of Cr(VI) ions. Ru-CoFe₂O₄/RGO achieves a maximum Cr(VI) reduction rate of 99% at 30 min under visible light irradiation, which is much higher than previously reported catalysts. Moreover, PEC Cr(VI) reduction rate is also tuned by adding varying concentration of phenol. A mechanism for the concurrent removal of Cr(VI) and phenol has been revealed over a bifunctional Ru-CoFe₂O₄/RGO catalyst. A number of key conclusions emerged from this study, demonstrating the dual role of phenol during Cr(VI) reduction by PEC. Anodic oxidation of phenol produces the enormous H⁺ ion, which appears to be a key component of Cr(VI) reduction. Additionally, phenolic molecules serve as hole (h⁺) scavengers that reduce e^-/h⁺ recombination, thus enhancing the reduction rate of Cr(VI). Therefore, the Ru-CoFe₂O₄/RGO photoelectrode exhibits a promising capability of reducing both heavy metals and phenolic compounds simultaneously in wastewater.

Morphology-engineered carbon quantum dots embedded on octahedral CdIn2S4 for enhanced photocatalytic activity towards pollutant degradation and hydrogen evolution

In recent years, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and CdIn₂S₄ have considered as the representatives of the most potential photocatalysts applied in the field of photocatalysis for efficiently solving energy shortage and environmental pollution. In this work, a novel CQDs hybridized CdIn₂S₄ (CQDs/CIS) heterostructure with 2D nanosheet/3D nanooctahedra morphology was successfully fabricated by a simple in-situ solvothermal method. Most interestingly, the morphology of hybrid gradually evolved from 3D octahedron to 2D nanosheet with the increase of CQDs. This unique 2D/3D structure and synergistic effect between CQDs and CdIn₂S₄ increased the multi-dimensional active reaction sites and enhanced the quantum yield and the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron pairs. Therefore, CQDs/CIS hybrids showed excellent photocatalytic activities of H₂ generation, RhB and TCH degradation. Especially, CQDs/CIS-3 heterostructure presented the highest photocatalytic efficiency and its hydrogen generation activity (956.79 μmol g^-1 h^-1) was 7.57-fold improvement by contrast with pure CdIn₂S₄ (126.35 μmol g^-1 h^-1). Moreover, RhB and TCH degradation rate constants of CQDs/CIS-3 were about 8.14 and 2.32 times higher than those of CdIn₂S_4, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of CQDs on the evolution of heterostructure morphology and photocatalytic mechanism were also proposed. This research work would offer useful enlightenment for elucidating the affect of CQDs on the morphology evolution and construction of CQDs-based hybrid with excellent performances for H₂ production and pollutant removal.

Visible-light-driven Z-scheme protonated g-C3N4/wood flour biochar/BiVO4 photocatalyst with biochar as charge-transfer channel for enhanced RhB degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

For the simultaneous photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), directional charge-transfer channels and efficient separation of photogenerated holes and electrons are important. Herein, a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, protonated g-C₃N₄/BiVO₄ decorated with wood flour biochar (pCN/WFB/BiVO₄), was prepared through a hydrothermal reaction and electrostatic self-assembly for Cr(VI) photoreduction and RhB photodegradation. The morphological features, crystalline structure, chemical composition, optical properties, specific surface area, and photoelectrochemical properties of the prepared samples were investigated. The pCN/WFB/BiVO₄ photocatalyst exhibited superior removal performance when used to remove Cr(VI) and RhB separately or RhB-Cr(VI) system. The biochar bridge served as a charge-transfer channel between two semiconductors, and the electrons in protonated g-C₃N₄ (pCN) and BiVO₄ achieved a charge balance. This led to the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction, fast photogenerated charge separation, and a powerful redox ability. The pCN/WFB/BiVO₄ photocatalyst provides new insight into the mechanisms responsible for boosting multicomponent photocatalytic reactions, while constituting a promising candidate for wastewater treatment.

Space and Time Crystal Engineering in Developing Futuristic Chemical Technology

In the coming years, multipurpose catalysts for delivering different products under the same chemical condition will be required for developing smart devices for industrial or household use. In order to design such multipurpose devices with two or more specific roles, we need to incorporate a few independent but externally controllable catalytically active centers. Through space crystal engineering, such an externally controllable multipurpose MOF-based photocatalyst could be designed. In a chemical system, a few mutually independent secondary reaction cycles nested within the principal reaction cycle can be activated externally to yield different competitive products. Each reaction cycle can be converted into a time crystal, where the time consuming each reaction step could be converted as an event and all the reaction steps or events could be connected by a circle to build a time crystal. For fractal reaction cycles, a time polycrystal can be generated. By activating a certain fractal event based nested time crystal branch, we can select one of the desired competitive products according to our needs. This viewpoint intends to bring together the ideas of (spatial) crystal engineering and time crystal engineering in order to make use of the time–space arrangement in reaction–catalysis systems and introduce new aspects to futuristic chemical engineering technology.
