Effects of algae proliferation and density current on the vertical distribution of odor compounds in drinking water reservoirs in summer

Spatiotemporal dynamics of 2-methylisoborneol produced by filamentous cyanobacteria and associated driving factors in Lake Taihu, China

The proliferation of filamentous cyanobacteria in lakes can result in the generation of odor-causing compounds, predominantly 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), which pose odor-related challenges. In an effort to elucidate the spatiotemporal dynamics of 2-MIB and related influencing factors in East Lake Taihu, monthly investigations were undertaken from April 2022 to March 2023. In addition to the monthly survey, a whole-lake survey was conducted during the high-temperature period from July to September. The monthly survey revealed a distinct unimodal fluctuation in the concentration of 2-MIB in East Lake Taihu, with an average concentration at 297.0 ng/L during the high-temperature period. During the high-temperature period, the filamentous cyanobacterial communities detected in East Lake Taihu consisted primarily of species belonging to genera Leptolyngbya, Oscillatoria, Planktothricoides, and Pseudanabaena. However, no significant correlations were found between their densities and 2-MIB concentration. In addition, the mic gene was predominantly detected in genera Pseudanabaena and Planktothricoides, with the latter being the primary contributor to 2-MIB production. Furthermore, a succession of cyanobacteria capable of producing 2-MIB was detected, with water temperature and radiation intensity being identified as the primary driving factors. The temporal variation of 2-MIB concentration within East Lake Taihu during the whole year was primarily modulated by factors such as water temperature, water transparency, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll-a. During the high-temperature period, the 2-MIB concentration in the alga-dominated zone of East Lake Taihu was approximately 1.7 times greater than that in the macrophyte-dominated zone, with nutrient and transparency being identified as the main influencing factors. Consequently, our findings are of great significance for monitoring the sources and variation of 2-MIB in shallow lakes, providing a scientific foundation and theoretical guidance for odor management.

Spatial and temporal dynamics of microbes and genes in drinking water reservoirs: Distribution and potential for taste and odor generation

Numerous reservoirs encounter challenges related to taste and odor issues, often attributed to odorous compounds such as geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB). In this study, two large reservoirs located in northern and southern China were investigated. The Jinpen (JP) reservoir had 45.99 % Actinomycetes and 14.82 % Cyanobacteria, while the Xikeng (XK) reservoir contained 37.55 % Actinomycetes and 48.27 % Cyanobacteria. Most of the 2-MIB produced in surface layers of the two reservoirs in summer originated from Cyanobacteria, most of the 2-MIB produced in winter and in the bottom water originated from Actinomycetes. Mic gene abundance in the XK reservoir reached 5.42 × 104 copies/L in winter. The abundance of GSM synthase was notably high in the bottom layer and sediment of both reservoirs, while 2-MIB synthase was abundant in the surface layer of the XK reservoir, echoing the patterns observed in mic gene abundance. The abundance of odor-producing enzymes in the two reservoirs was inhibited by total nitrogen, temperature significantly influenced Actinomycetes abundance in the JP reservoir, whereas dissolved oxygen had a greater impact in the XK reservoir. Overall, this study elucidates the molecular mechanisms underlying odor compounding, providing essential guidance for water quality management strategies and the improvement of urban water reservoir quality.

Temporal Dynamics and Influential Factors of Taste and Odor Compounds in the Eastern Drinking Water Source of Chaohu Lake, China: A Comparative Analysis of Global Freshwaters

The escalating proliferation of cyanobacteria poses significant taste and odor (T/O) challenges, impacting freshwater ecosystems, public health, and water treatment costs. We examined monthly variations in four T/O compounds from September 2011 to August 2012 in Chaohu Lake's eastern drinking water source (DECL). More importantly, we compared the reported T/O occurrence and the related factors in freshwater bodies worldwide. The assessment of T/O issues indicated a severe and widespread problem, with many cases surpassing odor threshold values. Remarkably, China reported the highest frequency and severity of odor-related problems. A temporal analysis revealed variations in odor occurrences within the same water body across different years, emphasizing the need to consider high values in all seasons for water safety. Globally, T/O issues were widespread, demanding attention to variations within the same water body and across different layers. Algae were crucial contributors to odor compounds, necessitating targeted interventions due to diverse odorant sources and properties. A correlation analysis alone lacked definitive answers, emphasizing the essential role of further validation, such as algae isolation. Nutrients are likely to have influenced the T/O, as GSM and MIB correlated positively with nitrate and ammonia nitrogen in DECL, resulting in proposed control recommendations. This study offers recommendations for freshwater ecosystem management and serves as a foundation for future research and management strategies to address T/O challenges.

Suitability of inorganic coagulants for algae-laden water treatment: Trade-off between algae removal and cell viability, aggregate properties and coagulant residue

Inorganic coagulants could effectively precipitate algae cells but might increase the potential risks of cell damage and coagulant residue. This study was conducted to critically investigate the suitability of polyaluminum (PAC), FeCl3 and TiCl4 for algae-laden water treatment in terms of the trade-off between algal substance removal, cell viability, and coagulant residue. The results showed that an appropriate increase in coagulant dosage contributed to better coagulation performance but severe cell damage and a higher risk of intracellular organic matter (IOM) release. TiCl4 was the most destructive, resulting in 60.85% of the algal cells presenting membrane damage after coagulation. Intense hydrolysis reaction of Ti salts was favorable for the formation of larger and more elongated, dendritic structured flocs than Al and Fe coagulants. TiCl4 exhibited the lowest residue level and remained in the effluents mainly in colloidal form. The study also identified charge neutralization, chemisorption, enmeshment, and complexation as the dominant mechanisms for algae water coagulation by metal coagulants. Overall, this study provides the trade-off analyses between maximizing algae substance removal and minimizing potential damage to cell integrity and is practically valuable to develop the most suitable and feasible technique for algae-laden water treatment.

Thermal stratification controls taste and odour compounds by regulating the phytoplankton community in a large subtropical water source reservoir (Xin'anjiang Reservoir)

2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) and geosmin are compounds released by algae that significantly degrade reservoir water quality, posing a threat to both the safety of drinking water and the quality of aquatic products sourced from these environments. However, few studies have explored how enhanced thermal stratification affects the occurrence and regulation of odorants in large drinking water reservoirs. Through systematic monitoring and investigation of Xin'anjiang Reservoir, we found that enhanced thermal stratification promotes filamentous cyanobacteria, particularly Leptolyngbya sp., as the primary contributor to 2-MIB production within the 1-10 m layer of the water column. The highest 2-MIB concentration, 92.5 ng/L, was recorded in the riverine region, which was 2.54 and 14.52 times higher than that in the transitional and central parts of the reservoir, respectively. Temperature indirectly impacted algal growth and odorant production by modulating TN/TP ratios. Geosmin concentration responded rapidly to relatively low TN/TP ratios (< 25). Our findings suggest that phosphorus control in estuaries should be enhanced during thermal stratification period. In summary, our study provides valuable insights to inform pragmatic water intake strategies and the distribution and release of odorants caused by thermal stratification. This is particularly relevant in the context of future global warming and extremely high temperatures during the warm season.

Actinobacteria produce taste and odor in drinking water reservoir: Community composition dynamics, co-occurrence and inactivation models

Taste and odor (T&O) has become a significant concern for drinking water safety. Actinobacteria are believed to produce T&O during the non-algal bloom period; however, this has not been widely investigated. In this study, the seasonal dynamics of the actinobacterial community structure and inactivation of odor-producing actinobacteria were explored. The results indicated that the diversity and community composition of actinobacteria exhibited significant spatiotemporal distribution. Network analysis and structural equation modeling showed that the actinobacterial community occupied a similar environmental niche, and the major environmental attributes exhibited spatiotemporal dynamics, which affected the actinobacterial community. Furthermore, the two genera of odorous actinobacteria were inactivated in drinking water sources using chlorine. Amycolatopsis spp. have a stronger chlorine resistance ability than Streptomyces spp., indicating that chlorine inactivates actinobacteria by first destroying cell membranes and causing the release of intracellular compounds. Finally, we integrated the observed variability in the inactivation rate of actinobacteria into an expanded Chick-Watson model to estimate its effect on inactivation. These findings will deepen our understanding of the seasonal dynamics of actinobacterial community structure in drinking water reservoirs and provide a foundation for reservoir water quality management strategies.

Early warning of MIB episode based on gene abundance and expression in drinking water reservoirs

Cellular 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) yield of cyanobacteria varies under different conditions according to culture studies and field investigations, the causal mechanism remains unclear and results in ineffective MIB prediction. Through an intensive field survey during an MIB episode produced by Pseudanabaena cinerea in QCS reservoir, we demonstrated that MIB synthesis (mic) gene abundance (DNA) and expression (RNA) might be useful as parameters for early warning of MIB production. It was found that the abundance of mic DNA and RNA peaked ahead of MIB concentrations by 10 and 7 days, respectively. In addition, the RNA abundance (R² = 0.45, p < 0.01) showed a slightly higher correlation with MIB compared to DNA abundance (R² = 0.37, p < 0.01), suggesting that the conditions for the growth of Pseudanabaena cinerea might be slightly different from those for mic gene expression, which was verified by a culture experiment. The highest cell growth was obtained under 36 μmol photons m^-2 s^-1, while the highest cellular MIB yield and mic gene expression level were obtained under 85 μmol photons m^-2 s^-1. Our results clearly supported that light intensity was the virtual regulator governing the mic gene expression within the controlled culture experiment and the actual MIB episode in the reservoir. Besides these results, we developed an early warning model using mic gene abundance as an indicator of MIB episodes, which was verified in two other reservoirs. Our findings highlight the effect of light intensity on mic gene expression and MIB synthesis and provide an early warning tool targeting MIB episode prediction, which therefore should be of importance for source water authorities.

Evaluation of environmental factors and microbial community structure in an important drinking-water reservoir across seasons

The composition of microbial communities varies in water and sediments, and changes in environmental factors have major effects on microbiomes. Here, we characterized variations in microbial communities and physicochemical factors at two sites in a large subtropical drinking water reservoir in southern China. The microbiomes of all sites, including the diversity and abundance of microbial species, were determined via metagenomics, and the relationships between microbiomes and physicochemical factors were determined via redundancy analysis. The dominant species in sediment and water samples differed; Dinobryon sp. LO226KS and Dinobryon divergens were dominant in sediment samples, whereas Candidatus Fonsibacter ubiquis and Microcystis elabens were dominant in water. The diversity was also significantly different in microbial alpha diversity between water and sediment habitats (p < 0.01). The trophic level index (TLI) was the major factor affecting the microbial community in water samples; Mycolicibacterium litorale and Mycolicibacterium phlei were significantly positively related to TLI. Furthermore, we also studied the distribution of algal toxin-encoding genes and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in the reservoir. It found that water samples contained more phycotoxin genes, with the cylindrospermopsin gene cluster most abundant. We found three genera highly related to cylindrospermopsin and explored a new cyanobacteria Aphanocapsa montana that may produce cylindrospermopsin based on the correlation through network analysis. The multidrug resistance gene was the most abundant ARG, while the relationship between ARGs and bacteria in sediment samples was more complicated than in water. The results of this study enhance our understanding of the effects of environmental factors on microbiomes. In conclusion, research on the properties, including profiles of algal toxin-encoding genes and ARGs, and microbial communities can aid water quality monitoring and conservation.

Water Harvesting Strategies through Solar Steam Generator Systems

Solar steam generator (SSG) systems have attracted increasing attention, owing to its simple manufacturing, material abundance, cost-effectiveness, and environmentally friendly freshwater production. This system relies on photothermic materials and water absorbing substrates for a clean continuous distillation process. To optimize this process, there are factors that are needed to be considered such as selection of solar absorber and water absorbent materials, followed by micro/macro-structural system design for efficient water evaporation, floating, and filtration capability. In this contribution, we highlight the general interfacial SSG concept, review and compare recent progresses of different SSG systems, as well as discuss important factors on performance optimization. Furthermore, unaddressed challenges such as SSG's cost to performance ratio, filtration of untreatable micropollutants/microorganisms, and the need of standardization testing will be discussed to further advance future SSG studies.

Driving forces for the growth of MIB-producing Planktothricoides raciborskii in a low-latitude reservoir

In comparison with the middle- and high-latitude regions, the low-latitude regions are less associated with the occurrence of 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) episodes, since most of the previously identified MIB producers favor moderate/low light/temperature conditions. Here, we report a serious MIB outbreak over the period from Jul. 2018 to Jun. 2019 in a low-latitude reservoir with a mean annual water temperature of 25.6 °C. The MIB episode lasted for a long period, from Jul. 2018 to Jan. 2019, and Planktothricoides raciborskii was confirmed to be the main MIB producer. The growth characteristics of P. raciborskii were explored through both laboratory culturing and on-site verification experiments. The results indicated that this strain was not nutrient-sensitive at TN > 800 μg L^-1 and TP > 10 μg L^-1, but favored moderate light intensity (54 μmol photon m^-2·s^-1) and high temperature (30 °C). The two bloom-forming genera, Limnothrix and Aphanizomenon, favoring lower temperature and similar or relatively higher light intensity, showed much greater proliferation, about 13 folds (Limnothrix) and 58 folds (Aphanizomenon), from Dec. to Jun.; by contrast, the high water temperature (29.9 ± 2.8 °C) and light intensity (189.1 ± 87.6 μmol photon m^-2·s^-1) from Jul. to Nov. were not favorable to Limnothrix or Aphanizomenon, which might have created an opportunity for the growth of MIB-producing P. raciborskii. In addition, we also found that high temperature could promote the release of MIB from P. raciborskii cells, therefore exerting increased pressure on drinking water treatment processes.

Seasonal dynamics of odor compounds concentration driven by phytoplankton succession in a subtropical drinking water reservoir, southeast China

Occurrences of odor compounds in drinking water reservoirs are considered as a nuisance by the water industry. Through the high-frequency monitoring of Tianmuhu Reservoir, a drinking water source for a city with a population of 700,000, we found that odor compounds seasonal dynamics were significantly related to phytoplankton succession, which was controlled by hydrometeorological process. 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) was significantly related to Aphanizomenon sp. (r = 0.51). When the surface water temperature exceeded 12 ℃, 2-MIB concentration may exceed the odor threshold concentration. With the proliferation of Aphanizomenon sp. in spring, 2-MIB concentration reached 87.22 ng/L. After late spring heavy rain, 2-MIB concentration sharply decreased to 3.19 ng/L. As the temperature increased at the end of the rainy season, Aphanizomenon sp. biomass increased to 2.09 mg/L, and 2-MIB concentration increased to 40.16 ng/L. These results showed that the concentration of odor compounds in shallow layer varied greatly because odor compounds mainly originated from phytoplankton and were susceptible to short-term hydrometeorological processes. However, the concentrations of odor compounds in deep layer were relatively insensitive to short-term weather processes. This study will improve the understanding of seasonal changes in odor compounds at different depths, and provide useful information for reservoir managers to prevent odor problems.

Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Chlorophyll-a Variations in Receiving Reservoir of World’s Largest Water Transfer Project—A Case Study in the Miyun Reservoir, North China

Although water transfer projects can alleviate the water crisis, they may cause potential risks to water quality safety in receiving areas. The Miyun Reservoir in northern China, one of the receiving reservoirs of the world’s largest water transfer project (South-to-North Water Transfer Project, SNWTP), was selected as a case study. Considering its potential eutrophication trend, two machine learning models, i.e., the support vector machine (SVM) model and the random forest (RF) model, were built to investigate the trophic state by predicting the variations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations, the typical reflection of eutrophication, in the reservoir after the implementation of SNWTP. The results showed that compared with the SVM model, the RF model had higher prediction accuracy and more robust prediction ability with abnormal data, and was thus more suitable for predicting Chl-a concentration variations in the receiving reservoir. Additionally, short-term water transfer would not cause significant variations of Chl-a concentrations. After the project implementation, the impact of transferred water on the water quality of the receiving reservoir would have gradually increased. After a 10-year implementation, transferred water would cause a significant decline in the receiving reservoir’s water quality, and Chl-a concentrations would increase, especially from July to August. This led to a potential risk of trophic state change in the Miyun Reservoir and required further attention from managers. This study can provide prediction techniques and advice on water quality security management associated with eutrophication risks resulting from water transfer projects.
