Rare earth elements sequestration in phytoliths: Partitioning patterns and influencing mechanism

Rare earth elements (REEs) are integral to numerous high-tech industries, yet their biogeochemical cycling within ecosystems remains inadequately characterized. Recently, phytoliths have been identified as potentially significant sinks for REEs; however, their role in the cycling of these elements has been underestimated. In this work, we investigate the accumulation of REEs in phytoliths (PhytREEs) within the Greater Khingan Mountains region, employing an optimized wet oxidation method combined with heavy liquid flotation to quantify PhytREEs contents in surface soils. The results revealed an elevation-dependent pattern of PhytREEs concentration, with heightened levels at higher altitudes and diminishing concentrations towards the eastern plains. The enrichment coefficient of PhytREEs (ECPhytREEs) was found to be approximately 2.7 %, indicative of a moderately selective sequestration process. The multivariate analysis indicated that terrain complexity, climatic patterns, soil texture, and organic matter significantly influence the uptake and storage of REEs in plants, subsequently affecting their partitioning in phytoliths. Among these factors, the complexation of REEs with organic matter emerged as a pivotal mechanism facilitating their immobilization within phytoliths. Soil characteristics also play a non-negligible role in modulating REEs dynamics. Our findings highlight the predominant influence of climate on PhytREE storage, suggesting that climatic variables are the primary drivers modulating the bioavailability and ultimate sequestration of REEs within phytoliths. This study enhances our understanding of the biotic-abiotic interplay in the sequestration of REEs and underscores the need to incorporate phytoliths into models of terrestrial REE cycling.

Phytotoxicity of single and mixed rare earth element (La, Nd and Sm) exposures on Lactuca sativa seed germination and growth

The mode of action, bioaccumulation potential and toxicity of Rare Earth Elements (REE), with several applications in the technology, medical and agricultural fields, are still understudied. The nitrates acute effects on single exposures, binary and ternary mixtures of lanthanum (La), neodymium (Nd) and samarium (Sm) on Lactuca sativa lettuce seed germination and wet biomass in an artificial soil (AS) and an Ultisol were assessed. Germination (EC50), wet biomass (IC50) and germination inhibition (% GI) were evaluated. EC50 values show La was the most toxic in Ultisol, Sm in AS, and Nd appears with intermediate values on both substrates. The IC50, both single and mixed, decreased from 3- to 181-fold with increasing test concentrations in relation to the control in AS, while increases in Ultisol were observed, followed by decreases at higher doses which may be associated with the low-dose stimulation effect (hormesis). Our findings may be used to subsidize REE risk assessment studies and reinforce the hormesis effect to prevent the use of high application of REE fertilizers, avoiding the accumulation of REE in agricultural soils.

Construction of Ion-Imprinted Graphene Oxide Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Selective Adsorption and Separation of Tm3

Efficient adsorption and separation of rare earth from other similar rare earth wastewater has become an urgent demand for resource utilization of ion-type rare earth minerals in China. Herein, thulium (Tm) ion-imprinted graphene oxide (GO)-doped polyether sulfone (PES) membranes (GO-TII/PES-2 membranes) were prepared, in which ion-imprinted graphene oxide was applied as an efficient Tm3+ ionic ligand in the imprinted layer and polyether sulfone was applied as a carrier in the membrane matrix to achieve the selective adsorption and separation of Tm3+ and neighboring rare earth ions. Combined with an ion rectifier, the separation and purification performances of Tm3+ were explored. The separation factors β(Tm3+/Tb3+), β(Tm3+/Sm3+), β(Tm3+/Nd3+), and β(Tm3+/Ce3+) in the dynamic adsorption process increased significantly from 1.22, 1.04, 1.04, and 1.02 for nonimprinting to 3.07, 3.91, 3.91, and 3.33 for imprinted membranes. The GO-TII/PES-2 membrane adsorbed about three times more Tm3+ than the nonionic-imprinted (GO-NII/PES) membrane by adding a color developer and quantifying Tm3+ based on a fast and easy UV-photometric method. After eight dynamic permeations, the adsorption of Tm3+ by the GO-TII/PES-2 membrane decreased by only 13%, indicating that the membrane has good reuse performance. Additionally, the investigation examined the influence of Tm3+ on wheat seed germination, underscoring its potential application in agriculture and the importance of adsorbing and separating rare earth ions.

Association between concentrations of rare earth elements in chorionic villus and risk for unexplained spontaneous abortion

Rare earth elements (REEs) exposure during pregnancy may increase the risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion. However, the association between REEs intrauterine exposure and unexplained spontaneous abortion had yet to be studied. In order to conduct this large case-control study, we thus collected chorionic villus from 641 unexplained spontaneous abortion and 299 control pregnant women and detected the concentrations of 15 REEs by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Because the detection rates of 10 REEs were less than 80%, the remaining 5 REEs, which were lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd) and yttrium (Y), underwent to further analysis. The association between 5 REEs and unexplained spontaneous abortion was assessed by using the logistic regression, bayesian kernel regression (BKMR) and weighted quantile sum regression (WQS) models. In the adjusted logistic regression model, Pr, Nd and Y enhanced the incidence of unexplained spontaneous abortion in a dose-dependent way and Ce increased the risk only at high concentration group. The result of BKMR model demonstrated that the risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion increased as the percentile of five mixed REEs increased. Y and Nd were both significantly associated with an increased incidence of unexplained spontaneous abortion, but La was correlated with a decrease in the risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion. Pr was substantially associated with an increase in the risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion when other REEs concentrations were fixed at the 25th and 50th percentiles. According to WQS regression analysis, the WQS index was significantly associated with unexplained spontaneous abortion (OR = 3.75, 95% CI:2.40-5.86). Y had the highest weight, followed by Nd and Pr, which was consistent with the analysis results of our other two models. In short, intrauterine exposure to REEs was associated with an increased risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion, with Y, Nd and Pr perhaps playing an essential role.

Enrichment of dissolved metal(loid)s and microbial organic matter during transit of a historic mine drainage system

Water quality degradation by decommissioned mining sites is an environmental issue recognized globally. In the Ore mountains of Central Europe, a wide array of contaminants is released by abandoned under- and aboveground mining sites threatening the quantity and quality of surface and groundwater resources. Here, we focus on the less-explored internal pollution processes within these mines involving organic carbon and microorganisms in trace metal(loid)s mobilization processes. Over an 18-month period, we conducted hydrological and biogeochemical monitoring at the Reiche Zeche mine, a former lead-zinc-silver mine, in Germany, reaching 230 meters below ground, well below the critical zone. Our results show strong seasonal fluctuations in water availability, concentrations of metal(loid)s, pH, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) components across multiple depths. Excess metal(loid) presence during high flow conditions indicated mobilization behavior deviating from conservative dilution. Our findings reveal strong positive correlations between metal(loid) variability and pH (0.894), and between metal(loid) variability and the DOM fluorescent component C2 (-0.910), a proxy for microbial activity. Accordingly, the microbial processes may significantly contribute to the observed metal(loid) composition and fluxes. By elucidating the intricate roles of hydrological and biogeochemical factors in trace metal(loid) mobilization, our research offers a comprehensive framework for improving mine water management and remediation, potentially informing global environmental policies and sustainable mining practices.

Rare earth metallic elements in plants: assessing benefits, risks and mitigating strategies

Rare earth elements (REEs) comprises of a uniform group of lanthanides and scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y) finding their key importance in agriculture sectors, electronic and defense industries, and renewable energy production. The immense application of REEs as plant growth promoters has led to their undesirable accumulation in the soil system raising concerns for REE pollution as upcoming stresses. This review mainly addresses the chemistry of REEs, uptake and distribution and their biphasic responses in plant systems and possible plausible techniques that could mitigate/alleviate REE contamination. It extends beyond the present understanding of the biphasic impacts of rare earth elements (REEs) on physio-biochemical attributes. It not only provides landmarks for further exploration of the interrelated phytohormonal and molecular biphasic nature but also introduces novel approaches aimed at mitigating their toxicities. By delving into innovative strategies such as recycling, substitution, and phytohormone-assisted mitigation, the review expands upon existing knowledge of REEs whilst also offering pathways to tackle the challenges associated with REE utilization.

Concentration and health risk assessment of 16 rare earth elements in six types of tea in China

Rare Earth Elements (REEs) have been implicated in potential health effects. However, the health risk of REE exposure among tea drinkers in China remains poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the concentration of REEs in different tea categories and evaluate the associated health risks for tea consumers in China. By analyzing the content of 16 REEs in 4326 tea samples from China, the exposure level of REEs to the general population was estimated. The content of these 16 REEs was similar across six types of tea, with oolong tea exhibiting the highest levels. The concentration of light rare earth elements (LREEs) in six types of tea was higher than that of heavy rare earth elements (HREEs). The daily mean and 95th percentile (P95) exposure to REEs from tea for the general population in China were 0.0328 μg/kg BW and 0.1283 μg/kg BW, respectively, which are significantly lower than the temporary acceptable daily dose (tADI). Our findings suggest that REEs from tea do not pose a known health risk to Chinese consumers.

Lanthanum interferes with the fundamental rhythms of stomatal opening, expression of related genes, and evapotranspiration in Arabidopsis thaliana

The accumulation of rare earth elements (REEs) in the global environment poses a threat to plant health and ecosystem stability. Stomata located on leaves serve as the primary site for plant responses to REE-related threats. This study focused on lanthanum [La(III)], a prevalent REE in the atmospheric environment. Using interdisciplinary techniques, it was found that La(III) (≤80 µM) interfered with the fundamental rhythms of stomatal opening, related gene expression, and evapotranspiration in plants. Specifically, when exposed to low concentrations of La(III) (15 and 30 µM), the expression levels of six genes were increased, stomatal opening was enhanced, and the evapotranspiration rate was accelerated. The interference on stomatal rhythms was enhanced with higher concentrations of La(III) (60 and 80 µM), increasing the expression levels of six genes, stomatal opening, and evapotranspiration rate. To counter the interference of low concentrations of La(III) (15 and 30 μM), plants accelerated nutrient replenishment through La(III)-induced endocytosis, which the redundant nutrients enhanced photosynthesis. However, replenished nutrients failed to counter the disruption of plant biological rhythms at higher concentrations of La(III) (60 and 80 μM), thus inhibiting photosynthesis due to nutrient deficit. The interference of La(III) on these biological rhythms negatively affected plant health and ecosystem stability.

Advancing phytomining: Harnessing plant potential for sustainable rare earth element extraction

Rare earth elements (REEs) are pivotal for advanced technologies, driving a surge in global demand. Import dependency on clean energy minerals raises concerns about supply chain vulnerabilities and geopolitical risks. Conventional REEs productionis resource-intensive and environmentally harmful, necessitating a sustainable supply approach. Phytomining (agromining) utilizes plants for eco-friendly REE extraction, contributing to the circular economy and exploiting untapped metal resources in enriched soils. Critical parameters like soil pH, Casparian strip, and REE valence influence soil and plant uptake bioavailability. Hyperaccumulator species efficiently accumulate REEs, serving as energy resources. Despite a lack of a comprehensive database, phytomining exhibits lower environmental impacts due to minimal chemical usage and CO2 absorption. This review proposes phytomining as a system for REEs extraction, remediating contaminated areas, and rehabilitating abandoned mines. The phytomining of REEs offers a promising avenue for sustainable REEs extraction but requires technological advancements to realize its full potential.

Biostimulant Response of Foliar Application of Rare Earth Elements on Physiology, Growth, and Yield of Rice

Rare earth elements (REEs) have been intentionally used in Chinese agriculture since the 1980s to improve crop yields. Around the world, REEs are also involuntarily applied to soils through phosphate fertilizers. These elements are known to alleviate damage in plants under abiotic stresses, yet there is no information on how these elements act in the physiology of plants. The REE mode of action falls within the scope of the hormesis effect, with low-dose stimulation and high-dose adverse reactions. This study aimed to verify how REEs affect rice plants' physiology to test the threshold dose at which REEs could act as biostimulants in these plants. In experiment 1, 0.411 kg ha-1 (foliar application) of a mixture of REE (containing 41.38% Ce, 23.95% La, 13.58% Pr, and 4.32% Nd) was applied, as well as two products containing 41.38% Ce and 23.95% La separately. The characteristics of chlorophyll a fluorescence, gas exchanges, SPAD index, and biomass (pot conditions) were evaluated. For experiment 2, increasing rates of the REE mix (0, 0.1, 0.225, 0.5, and 1 kg ha-1) (field conditions) were used to study their effect on rice grain yield and nutrient concentration of rice leaves. Adding REEs to plants increased biomass production (23% with Ce, 31% with La, and 63% with REE Mix application) due to improved photosynthetic rate (8% with Ce, 15% with La, and 27% with REE mix), favored by the higher electronic flow (photosynthetic electron transport chain) (increase of 17%) and by the higher Fv/Fm (increase of 14%) and quantum yield of photosystem II (increase of 20% with Ce and La, and 29% with REE Mix), as well as by increased stomatal conductance (increase of 36%) and SPAD index (increase of 10% with Ce, 12% with La, and 15% with REE mix). Moreover, adding REEs potentiated the photosynthetic process by increasing rice leaves' N, Mg, K, and Mn concentrations (24-46%). The dose for the higher rice grain yield (an increase of 113%) was estimated for the REE mix at 0.72 kg ha-1.

Geographical verification of Pleuropterus multiflorus thunb. by functional compounds, stable isotope ratios, and multielement combined with machine learning methods

The dry roots of Pleuropterus multiflorus Thunb. (PM) have been traditionally utilized as functional foods and medicines China and various Asian countries. They are extensively cultivated in multiple provinces in China, with variations in prices and qualities. This study aims to investigate the regional characteristics of PM by 4 stable isotope ratios, 40 multielement and 16 functional compounds contents, using a total of 357 samples from 8 different geographical origins. Machine learning methods were developed to authenticating the geographical origins of PM, yielding the accuracy range from 94.44 % to 100 % in the test set. Notably, the protected designation of origin, Deqing PM, exhibited a high accuracy of 100 % in most models, A total of 30 significant prediction variables, encompassing 16 functional compounds, δ2H, 12 rare earth elements, and Cu, were identified. Additionally, the study identified altitude, high temperature, and dry or moisture index as the primary influenced environmental factors.

Can rare earth elements be recovered from abandoned mine tailings by means of electrokinetic-assisted phytoextraction?

Given the high impact of traditional mining, the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from hazardous waste materials could become an option for the future in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. In this work, the technical feasibility of REEs recovery from metal mine tailings has been explored using electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation with ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Phytoextraction combined with both AC current and DC current with reversal polarity was applied (1 V cm-1, 8 h day-1) to real mine tailings containing a total concentration of REEs (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) of around 146 mg kg-1. Changes in REEs geochemical fractionation and their concentrations in the soil pore water showed the mobilization of REEs caused by plants and electric current; REE availability was increased to a higher extent for combined electrokinetic-assisted phytoextraction treatments showing the relevant role of plants in the process. Our results demonstrated the initial hypothesis that it is feasible to recover REEs from real metal mining waste by phytoextraction and that the performance of this technology can be significantly improved by applying electric current, especially of the AC type, which increased REE accumulation in ryegrass in the range 57-68% as compared to that of the treatment without electric field application.

Comparative analysis of rare earth elements concentrations in domestic dogs and Apennine wolves of Central Italy: Influence of biological, nutritional, and lifestyle factors

Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are strategical elements playing a crucial role in the industry, especially in producing high-tech materials. Therefore, REEs are new contaminants of emerging concerns. However, due to the lack of exposure data on REE occurrence in environmental matrices, especially in European countries, it is still tricky to establish environmental background levels to assess the ecotoxicological risk related to REEs exposure. The present study aimed to evaluate the liver concentrations of REEs in domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and Apennine wolves (Canis lupus italicus) living in the Abruzzo region, Italy. Moreover, for the scope of the present study, the dog's group was divided according to their sex, age, lifestyle, and diet. Wolves were categorized concerning their sex and genetic characteristics. Liver samples from dogs and wolves were collected during diagnostic necropsies from carcasses, sample mineralization was performed by a microwave digestion system with a single reaction chamber, and simultaneous determination of the presence of REEs was performed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (Q-ICP-MS) using standard mode for all rare earth elements except scandium (Sc) which was acquired in kinetic energy discrimination (KED) mode. Hepatic concentrations of REEs were statistically significantly higher in wolves compared to dogs. Moreover, significant differences in REEs concentrations arose also from the genetic type of wolf, since "pure wolves" had higher liver concentrations of REEs compared to wolf-dog hybrids. Female and adult dogs also showed elevated REEs compared to male and juvenile dogs, while no significant differences were demonstrated for dogs' diet and lifestyle. The results of the present study confirm the exposure of domestic and wild carnivores to REEs, showing also the ability of REEs to accumulate in carnivore livers, suggesting the potential role of this species as an alternative bioindicator.

Uptake and transport mechanisms of rare earth hyperaccumulators: A review

Due to their use in a number of advanced electronic technologies, Rare earth elements (REEs) have recently emerged as a key strategic resource for many nations worldwide. The significant increase in demand for REEs has thus greatly increased the mining of these substances, but this industrial-scale expansion of mining activities also poses potential risks to the surrounding environment, flora, fauna, and humans. Hence efficient REE remediation is one potential remediation process involving in situ clean-up of contaminated soil which has gained much attention in recent years, due to its low cost and lack of secondary pollution. However, some crucial aspects of phytoremediation, such as the precise-mechanisms of absorption, transport, and tolerance of REEs by hyperaccumulators -are poorly understood. This review briefly discusses the environmental risks associated with excess REEs, the efficacy of phytoremediation technologies coupled with, appropriate hyperaccumulator species to migrate REEs exposure. While REEs hyperaccumulator species should ideally be large-biomass trees and shrubs suitable for cropping in subtropical regions areas, such species have not yet been found. Specifically, this review focuses on the factors affecting the bioavailability of REEs in plants, where organic acids are critical ligands promoting efficient transport and uptake. Thus the uptake, transport, and binding forms of REEs in the above-ground parts of hyperaccumulators, especially the transporters isolated from the heavy metal transporter families, are discussed in detail. Finally, having summarized the current state of research in this area, this review proceeds to discuss current knowledge gaps and research directions. With a focus on hyperaccumulators, this review serves as a basis for future phytoremediation strategies of rare earth mining-impacted environments and addresses ecosystem/environmental degradation issues resulting from such mining activity.

Extension of a biotic ligand model for predicting the toxicity of neodymium to wheat: The effects of pH, Ca2+ and Mg2

The damage excessive neodymium (Nd) causes to animals and plants should not be underestimated. However, there is little research on the impact of pH and associated ions on the toxicity of Nd. Here, a biotic ligand model (BLM) was expanded to predict the effects of pH and chief anions on the toxic impact of Nd on wheat root elongation in a simulated soil solution. The results suggested that Nd3+ and NdOH2+ were the major ions causing phytotoxicity to wheat roots at pH values of 4.5-7.0. The Nd toxicity decreased as the activities of H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ increased but not when the activities of K+ and Na+ increased. The results indicated that H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ competed with Nd for binding sites. An extended BLM was developed to consider the effects of pH, H+, Ca2+, and Mg2+, and the following stability constants were obtained: logKNdBL = 2.51, logKNdOHBL = 3.90, logKHBL = 4.01, logKCaBL = 2.43, and logKMgBL = 2.70. The results demonstrated that the BLM could predict the Nd toxicity well while considering the competition of H+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and the toxic species Nd3+ and NdOH2+ for binding sites.

Foliar spraying of lanthanum activates endocytosis in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) root cells, increasing Cd and Pb accumulation and their bioaccessibility

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) accumulate easily in leafy vegetables and can harm human health. Lanthanum (La) have been used to improve agricultural yield and quality, but the effect of La application on Cd/Pb enrichment in leafy vegetables remains incomplete currently. A previous study reported that the endocytosis in lettuce leaf cells can be activated by La, leading to an increase in Pb accumulation in lettuce leaves. However, it has not been investigated whether foliar application of La enhances root cellular endocytosis and promotes its uptake of Cd and Pb. In this study, the influence of La on the uptake of Cd and Pb, Cd bioaccessibility, and the safety risks of cultivating lettuce under Cd and Pb stress were explored. It was found that La increased Cd (16-30 % in shoot, 16-34 % in root) and Pb (25-29 % in shoot, 17-23 % in root) accumulation in lettuce. The increased accumulation of Cd and Pb could be attributed to La-enhanced endocytosis. Meanwhile, La enhanced the toxicity of both Cd and Pb, inhibited lettuce growth, and aggravated the damage to the photosynthetic and antioxidant systems. Finally, gastrointestinal simulation experiments showed that La increased the Cd bioaccessibility in both gastric and intestinal phase by 7-108 % and 9-87 %, respectively. These results offer valuable insights into the safety of REEs for agricultural applications.

Co-cropping vetiver grass and legume for the phytoremediation of an acid mine drainage (AMD) impacted soil

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a form of environmental pollution from mining activity that can negatively affect soil environments by acidification, salinisation, and metal(loid) contamination. The use of plants to remediate (phytoremediation) these impacted environments while generating plant-based value is a promising approach to more accessible and cost-benefiting restoration of post-mining, marginal lands. In this study, a 3-month growth-chamber pot experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of co-cropping two plant species, Chrysopogon zizanioides (vetiver grass) and the legume Medicago truncatula (barrel clover) with a wheat straw biochar amendment on the phytostabilisation of metal(loid)s Cr, Zn, and As and the phytoextraction of rare earth element (REE) in an AMD impacted soil from a gold mining region in South Africa. The results showed that co-cropping with vetiver significantly lowered the legume's Cr, Zn, and As root contents by 80%, 32% and 54%, respectively, and improved the plant's overall metal(loid) tolerance by increasing its translocation from root to shoot tissue. The biochar further inhibited root uptake of Cr and Zn, by 71% and 36%, and increased the legume biomass by 40%. Both plant species and cropping treatments exhibited low REE extraction capabilities by shoot tissue, which accounted for less than 0.2% of total soil REE contents. The study shows that co-cropping with vetiver and biochar amendment are effective tools for the phytoremediation of AMD impacted soil mainly by lowering plant uptake and improving plant metal(loid) tolerance. Likely mechanisms at play include the alteration of rhizosphere chemistry and species-specific physiological and molecular responses. These effects offer support for the phytostabilisation of AMD impacted soil with the generation of plant-based value through dual (and safe) cultivation (phytoprotection) rather than through REE recovery from plant biomass (phytoextraction). These techniques could allow for the simultaneous restoration of post-mining, mining-impacted and marginal lands with agricultural production.

The mixed blessings of rare earth element supplements for tomatoes and ferns

Rare earth elements (REEs) constitute a key group of critical minerals that are strategic for the global low-carbon economy and several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Their expected escalating emissions into the environment from emerging anthropogenic sources can negatively affect natural ecosystems. However, their hormetic effects make these elements effective fertilizers to promote crop production. Here, we investigate the response of tomatoes and ferns to REE exposure (La, Gd, Yb). While ferns were unresponsive to REEs, these elements promote evident benefits in tomatoes, e.g., elevating nutrient uptake, higher photosynthetic capacity and phytohormone enhancement to allocate energy to green tissue and root development. Nevertheless, the non-selective cation uptake incurs risks of accumulating non-essential elements in edible tissues. These evident benefits of REEs on crops support applications in agricultural production systems, create added value to the global distribution and promote better material flow management of REEs as strategic and critical resources.

Biocomposite based on graphene oxide immobilized Pseudomonas psychrotolerans for the recovery of Y(III) in acid mine drainage

Rare earth elements (REEs) recovery is a critical issue concerning both resource recovery and wastewater utilization. In this study, a new bio-composite was fabricated using graphene oxide immobilized Pseudomonas psychrotolerans (PP@GO), which was isolated from the soil of REEs mine. Results showed that 99.6% Y(III) was removed in 48 h and various characterization confirmed that S-S, -NH2, HPO42-, -OH and -COOH from extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secreted by microorganisms formed complexation with Y(III). As well, the Y(III) adsorption best followed Freundlich isotherm and non-linear pseudo-second-order kinetic model having R2 of 0.985 and 0.996, respectively, demonstrating that the adsorption was governed by multilayered chemisorption. Additionally, the effectiveness of PP@GO was not limited to Y(III), where 27.9% of this substance was removed in acid mine drainage (AMD), also exhibited great adsorption for other REEs, such as Er (45.0%) and Ho (43.8%). Furthermore, the adsorption efficiency of Y(III) remained high (70.0%) after a 5th cycle, emphasizing the consistent stability of PP@GO. Finally, REEs adsorbed could be greatly desorbed by KNO3, like Sm (80.1%) and La (80.0%), which revealed that PP@GO has great potential to recover REEs in AMD. Overall, this study offers a promising strategy for the green and sustainable REEs recovery and wastewater treatment.

Hormesis and Low Toxic Effects of Three Lanthanides in Microfungi Isolated from Rare Earth Mining Waste in Northwestern Russia

The low-dose toxicity of chloride and nitrate salts of three lanthanides (La, Ce and Nd) was tested on six microfungal species. Five of them (Geomyces vinaceus, Aspergillus niveoglaucus, Pseudogymnoascus pannorum, Penicillium simplicissimum and Umbelopsis isabellina) were isolated from the loparite ore tailings on the Kola Peninsula, northwestern Russia. Sydowia polyspora was a control strain. In the case of nitrate salts, the toxicity of REEs to four of six microorganisms was significantly (p < 0.5) lower compared to chloride salts. In this case, nitrates can play the role of exogenous nutrients, compensating for the toxic effect of REEs. Interestingly, U. isabellina only showed an opposite response, indicating the highest toxicity of nitrate (IC5 = 9-20 mg/L) REEs' salts compared to chlorides (IC5 = 80-195 mg/L) at low concentration levels. In addition, treatment with lanthanides showed a "hormesis effect" on fungal growth with stimulation at low doses and inhibition at high doses. However, U. isabellina and S. polyspora demonstrated the absence of hormetic response under the treatment of REEs' nitrate salt. Taking into account the specific hormetic responses and high tolerance of P. simplicissimum and U. isabellina to lanthanides, our findings may be useful in the assessment of the potential application of the selected fungi to bioremediation and REE bioleaching.

Accumulation and Translocation of Rare Trace Elements in Plants near the Rare Metal Enterprise in the Subarctic

Mining activities create disturbed and polluted areas in which revegetation is complicated, especially in northern areas. For the first time, the state of the ecosystems in the impact zone of tailings formed during the processing of rare earth element deposits in the Subarctic have been studied. This work aimed to reveal aspects of accumulation and translocation of trace and biogenic elements in plants (Avenella flexuosa (L.) Drejer, Salix sp., and Betula pubescens Ehrh.) that are predominantly found in primary ecosystems on the tailings of loparite ores processing. The chemical composition of soil, initial and washed plant samples was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Factor analysis revealed that anthropogenic and biogenic factors affected the plants' chemical composition. A deficiency of nutrients (Ca, Mg, Mn) in plants growing on tailings was found. The absorption of REE (Ce, La, Sm, Nd) by A. flexuosa roots correlated with the soil content of these elements and was maximal in the hydromorphic, which had a high content of organic matter. The content of these elements in leaves in the same site was minimal; the coefficient of REE bioaccumulation was two orders of magnitude less than in the other two sites. The high efficiency of dust capturing and the low translocation coefficient of trace elements allow us to advise A. flexuosa for remediation of REE-contained tailings and soils.

Technosols Derived from Mining, Urban, and Agro-Industrial Waste for the Remediation of Metal(loid)-Polluted Soils: A Microcosm Assay

This study evaluated the effectiveness of six Technosols designed for the remediation of polluted soils (PS) by metal(loid)s at physicochemical, biological, and ecotoxicological levels and at a microcosm scale. Technosols T1-T6 were prepared by combining PS with a mix of organic and inorganic wastes from mining, urban, and agro-industrial activities. After two months of surface application of Technosols on polluted soils, we analysed the soil properties, metal(loid) concentration in total, soluble and bioavailable fractions, soil enzymatic activities, and the growth responses of Trifolium campestre and Lactuca sativa in both the Technosols and the underlying polluted soils. All Technosols improved the unfavourable conditions of polluted soils by neutralising acidity, increasing the OC, reducing the mobility of most metal(loid)s, and stimulating both the soil enzymatic activities and growths of T. campestre and L. sativa. The origin of organic waste used in the Technosols strongly conditioned the changes induced in the polluted soils; in this sense, the Technosols composed of pruning and gardening vermicompost (T3 and T6) showed greater reductions in toxicity and plant growth than the other Technosols composed with different organic wastes. Thus, these Technosols constitute a potential solution for the remediation of persistent polluted soils that should be applied in large-scale and long-term interventions to reinforce their feasibility as a cost-effective ecotechnology.

Cerium oxide nanoparticles alleviates stress in wheat grown on Cd contaminated alkaline soil

The cadmium contamination of soil is an alarming issue worldwide and among various mitigation strategies, nanotechnology mediated management of Cd contamination has become a well-accepted approach. The Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) are widely being explored for their novel works in Agro-Industry and Environment, including stress mitigation in crops. Very little work is reported regarding role of CeO2-NPs in management of Cd contamination in cereal crops like wheat. Present work was planned to check efficacy of CeO2-NPs in Cd stress mitigation of wheat under alkaline calcareous soil conditions. In this experiment, 4 sets of Cd contamination (Uncontaminated control-UCC, 10, 20, and 30 mg Cd per kg soil) and 5 sets of CeO2-NPs NPs (0, 200, 400, 600, and 1000 mg NP per kg soil) were applied in pots following completely randomized design (CRD) and wheat crop was grown. The growth, physiology, yield and Cd and Ce accumulation by wheat root, shoot and grain was monitored. The maximum Cd spiking level (30 mg kg-1) was found to be most toxic for plant growth. The results showed that the nanoparticles were overall beneficial for wheat growth and maximum level (1000 mg kg-1) being the most significant one under all Cd spiking sets. In Cd-30 sets, 1000 mg kg-1 NPs application resulted in decreased soil bioavailable Cd concentration (49.63% decrease compared to 30 mg kg-1 Cd spiked sets termed as Cd-30 Control), decreased Cd accumulation in all three tissues: root (58.36% decrease), shoot (52.30% decrease) and grain (55.56% decrease) while increased root dry weight (62.14%), shoot dry weight (89.32%), total grain yield (80.08%) and improved plant physiology with respect to Cd-30 control. Nanoparticles application substantially increased wheat root, shoot and grain Ce concentrations as well. The further prospects of these nanoparticles in relation to various biotic and abiotic stresses are advised to be explored.

In-situ elemental quantitative imaging in plant leaves by LA-ICP-MS with matrix-matching external calibration

Due to the enormous interest in plants related to bioscience, environmental and toxicological research, analytical methods are expected with the ability of getting information on elemental transfer, distribution and contents in plants. In this work, a mixture of gelatin (GA) and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) was prepared to simulate plant matrix, a method based on laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) with matrix-matching external calibration was proposed for direct quantification of multiple elements in plants. The composition of GA&HPMC substrate was optimized, such as the concentration of spiked nitric acid, the mass fraction of both GA and HPMC in the substrate and the mass ratio of GA: HPMC. After spiking elemental solution, coating the mixture onto a glass slide and drying overnight at room temperature, GA&HPMC substrate was obtained. The substrate obtained with GA: HPMC of 8: 2 was used to fabricate the standard series, which exhibited good elemental homogeneity and similar elemental signal intensities in LA-ICP-MS detection to that obtained for plant Certified Reference Material (CRM). CRMs of different plants including Citrus leaf (GBW10019), Tea (GBW07605), Beans (GBW10021) and Scallions (GBW10049) were further pressed into pellets and subjected to the proposed method, and the quantification accuracy was demonstrated. The limits of detections of this method were found to be 0.003 (Ce)-104 (Ca) μg g-1, with a wide linear range (0.01-10000 μg g-1) for 17 target elements. The application potential of the method was further demonstrated by performing elemental imaging in Trigonotis peduncularis leaves. Rapid in-situ quantitative imaging of Zn, Cu, Sr and Mn was achieved, and the elemental quantitative distributions were discussed. The constructed substrate helped direct elemental quantification in plants. It provided a powerful and efficient tool for the investigation of the distribution and transfer of elements in plants, favoring further exploration of elemental bioavailability, transport and toxicity mechanisms.

Remediation potential of mining, agro-industrial, and urban wastes against acid mine drainage

Acid mine drainage (AMD) poses serious consequences for human health and ecosystems. Novel strategies for its treatment involve the use of wastes. This paper evaluates the remediation potential of wastes from urban, mining and agro-industrial activities to address acidity and high concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTE) in AMD. Samples of these waste products were spiked with an artificially prepared AMD, then pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and PTE concentrations in the leachates were measured. The artificial AMD obtained through oxidation of Aznalcóllar's tailing showed an ultra-acid character (pH - 2.89 ± 0.03) and extreme high electrical conductivity (EC - 3.76 ± 0.14 dS m^-1). Moreover, most PTE were above maximum regulatory levels in natural and irrigation waters. Wastes studied had a very high acid neutralising capacity, as well as a strong capacity to immobilise PTE. Inorganic wastes, together with vermicompost from pruning, reduced most PTE concentrations by over 95%, while organic wastes retained between 50 and 95%. Thus, a wide range of urban, mining, and agro-industrial wastes have a high potential to be used in the treatment of AMD. This study provides valuable input for the development of new eco-technologies based on the combination of wastes (eg. Technosols, permeable reactive barriers) to remediate degraded environments.

Lanthanum Supplementation Alleviates Tomato Root Growth Suppression under Low Light Stress

Supplementation with rare earth elements (REEs) such as lanthanum and cerium has been shown to promote plant elongation and/or increase crop yields. On the other hand, there are reports that REE supplementation of plants has no such effect. The appropriate modes for REE utilization and the underlying mechanism are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated how REE supplementation of plants under low light stress affects plant growth and gene expression. Under low light stress conditions, tomato root elongation was observed to be reduced by about half. This suppression of root elongation was found to be considerably alleviated by 20 mM lanthanum ion supplementation. This effect was plant-species-dependent and nutrient-condition-dependent. Under low light stress, the expression of the genes for phytochrome-interacting factor, which induces auxin synthesis, and several auxin-synthesis-related proteins were markedly upregulated by lanthanum ion supplementation. Thus, we speculate that REE supplementation of plants results in auxin-induced cell elongation and alleviates growth suppression under stress conditions.

Research progress on the content and distribution of rare earth elements in rivers and lakes in China

This study reviewed the content and distribution of rare earth elements (REE) in rivers and lakes in China based on the online literature. The sequence distribution of REE presented the decreasing trends in the order: of Ce > La > Nd > Pr > Sm > Gb > Dy>Er > Yb > Eu > Lu > Ho > Tb > Tm in rivers water. Pearl River and the Jiulong River constitute a significant sediments REE reservoir with an average value mean of 229.6 mg/kg and 266.86 mg/kg, respectively; both have higher concentrations than the global river average (174.8 mg/kg) and higher than the local soil background (Chinese soil background). The Liaohe River is one of China's most polluted rivers, with REE distribution ranging from 106.61 to 174.71 g/L (average 144.59 g/L in water). The total concentrations of dissolved REE in rivers near REE mining areas in China are higher than in other rivers. Increasing anthropogenic inputs to natural systems may permanently alter the natural signatures of REE. The distribution characteristics of REE in Chinese lakes (sediments) varied greatly, and the mean enrichment factor (EF) was sorted as follows: Ce > La > Nd > Pr > Sm > Gd > Dy>Er > Yb > Eu > Ho > Tb > Tm > Lu, where Ce was the most abundant followed by La, Nd, and Pr, and these four elements account for 85.39 % of the total concentration of REE. The REE in the sediments obtained from Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake had an average concentration respectively of 254.0 μg/g and 197.95 μg/g; both are considerably higher than the average upper continental crust (146.4 μg/g) and higher than in other lakes in China and around the world. The distribution and accumulation of LREE in most lake sediments result from the joint action of human activities and natural processes. It concluded that mining tailings were the primary cause of REE pollution in sediments, and industrial and agricultural activities are mainly responsible for water contamination.

Triazine Herbicide and NPK Fertilizer Exposure: Accumulation of Heavy Metals and Rare Earth Elements, Effects on Cuticle Melanization, and Immunocompetence in the Model Species Tenebrio molitor

The increasing use of agrochemicals, including fertilizers and herbicides, has led to worrying metal contamination of soils and waters and raises serious questions about the effects of their transfer to different levels of the trophic web. Accumulation and biomagnification of essential (K, Na, Mg, Zn, Ca), nonessential (Sr, Hg, Rb, Ba, Se, Cd, Cr, Pb, As), and rare earth elements (REEs) were investigated in newly emerged adults of Tenebrio molitor exposed to field-admitted concentrations of a metribuzin-based herbicide and an NPK blend fertilizer. Chemical analyses were performed using inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) supported by unsupervised pattern recognition techniques. Physiological parameters such as cuticle melanization, cellular (circulating hemocytes), and humoral (phenoloxidase enzyme activity) immune responses and mass loss were tested as exposure markers in both sexes. The results showed that NPK fertilizer application is the main cause of REE accumulation in beetles over time, besides toxic elements (Sr, Hg, Cr, Rb, Ba, Ni, Al, V, U) also present in the herbicide-treated beetles. The biomagnification of Cu and Zn suggested a high potential for food web transfer in agroecosystems. Gender differences in element concentrations suggested that males and females differ in element uptake and excretion. Differences in phenotypic traits show that exposure affects metabolic pathways involving sequestration and detoxification during the transition phase from immature-to-mature beetles, triggering a redistribution of resources between sexual maturation and immune responses. Our findings highlight the importance of setting limits for metals and REEs in herbicides and fertilizers to avoid adverse effects on species that provide ecosystem services and contribute to soil health in agroecosystems.

Microstructural Analysis of Thermally Treated Geopolymer Incorporated with Neodymium

The following investigation presents the thermal treatment of geopolymer at 300 °C, 600 °C and 900 °C. We investigated what happens to the geopolymer base when incorporated with 1% and 5% of neodymium in the form Nd₂O₃. A total of six samples were synthesized. Geopolymer 1 contained 1% and geopolymer 2 contained 5% Nd₂O₃, and these samples were treated at 300 °C; then, samples geopolymer 3 and geopolymer 4 also had the same percentage composition of Nd₂O₃ and were treated at 600 °C, while samples geopolymer 5 and geopolymer 6were treated at 900 °C. Physical and chemical changes in the aluminosilicate geopolymer matrix were monitored. The incorporation of rare earths into the polymer network of aluminosilicates has been proven to disrupt the basic structure of geopolymers; however, with increased temperatures, these materials show even more unusual properties. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) analysis showed that the intensity of the vibrational band decreases with the increase in temperature during thermal treatment, suggesting alterations in the chemical structure of the geopolymers. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed that the diameter of the nanoparticles containing Al₂O₃ is in the range 5-10 nm, while larger crystallites range from 30 to 80 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the temperature of the thermal treatment increases to 300 °C and 600 °C; the porosity of geopolymer increases in the form of the appearance of large pores and cracks in material. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was used to investigate the surface chemistry of geopolymers, including the chemical composition of the surface, the oxidation state of the elements, and the presence of functional groups. The UV/Vis spectra of the synthesized geopolymers doped with Nd³⁺ show interesting optical properties at 900 °C; the geopolymer matrix completely disintegrates and an amorphous phase with a rare-earth precipitate appears.

Foliar application of lanthanum promotes growth and phytoremediation potential Solanum nigrum L

The hormetic effect of rare earth elements (REEs) has been found in a variety of crops and has been promoting crop growth for decades. Spraying leaves with REEs can enhance the endocytosis of plant roots. The non-selectivity of endocytosis is conducive to the direct absorption of environmental pollutants. The hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum L. (S. nigrum), as a plant with high biomass and heavy metal tolerance, is a good candidate for phytoremediation. La(III), as a typical light REE, also has an obvious hormetic effect on S. nigrum. At 10 μM La(III), the biomass of S. nigrum reached the maximum, which was 89% greater than the control, and La(III) concentration was much lower than the previously reported optimum of 56 μM for general plants. In the present study, enhanced endocytosis after foliar spraying of La(III) was firstly observed in the root cell of hyperaccumulation plants, and La(III) increased the biomass of S. nigrum by improving the photosynthetic system, and promoting nutrient uptake and root development. The antioxidant defense system improved by La(III) contributed to the tolerance of S. nigrum to heavy metals. Applying a reasonable range of La(III) is beneficial to improving S. nigrum growth and tolerance of heavy metals. Compared with spraying deionized water, the translocation factor and bioaccumulation factor value of S. nigrum to cadmium increased by 15% and 21% respectively when spraying 10 μM La(III). Our findings provide a reference for improving hyperaccumulator plant growth and biomass, which improves phytoremediation efficiency.

Ecological insight into antibiotic resistome of ion-adsorption rare earth mining soils from south China by metagenomic analysis

Antibiotic resistome has led to growing global threat to public health. Rare earth elements play important roles in modern society and mining activity for them has caused serious impact on soil ecosystems. However, antibiotic resistome in, especially, ion-adsorption rare earth-related soils is still poorly understood. In this work, soils were collected from ion-adsorption rare earth mining areas and adjacent regions of south China and metagenomic analysis was employed for profile, driving factors and ecological assembly of antibiotic resistome in the soils. Results show prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes conferring resistance to tetracycline/fluoroquinolone (adeF), peptide (bcrA), aminoglycoside (rpsL), tetracycline (tet(A)) and mupirocin (mupB) in ion-adsorption rare earth mining soils. Profile of antibiotic resistome is accompanied by its driving factors, i.e., physicochemical properties (La, Ce, Pr, Nd and Y of rare earth elements in 12.50-487.90 mg kg^-1), taxonomy (Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs, plasmid pYP1, Transposase_20). Variation partitioning analysis and partial least-squares-path modeling demonstrate that taxonomy is the most important individual contributor and pose most direct/indirect effect to antibiotic resistome. Further, null model analysis reveals stochastic processes as dominant ecological assembly of antibiotic resistome. This work advances our knowledge on antibiotic resistome with emphasis on ecological assembly in ion-adsorption rare earth-related soils for ARGs mitigation, mining management and mine restoration.

Metagenomic study of carbon metabolism in black soil microbial communities under lead-lanthanum stress

Pollution of soil environments with heavy metals (HMs) and rare earth elements (REEs) cannot be ignored. We aimed to determine the effects of lead combined with lanthanum (Pb-La) on microbial community structure, carbon metabolism, and differences in carbon source utilization in black soils using EcoPlates™ and a macrogenomic approach. We found that Pb and La contents and the microbial community structure together influence and shape the response of soil carbon metabolism to Pb-La. Compared with controls, microorganisms under pollution stress preferentially use phenolic and carboxylic acids as growth carbon sources. Under Pb-La stress, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria significantly increased, thereby selectively displacing heavy metal-sensitive phyla, such as Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, and Thaumarchaeota. Altered functional potential of the microbial carbon cycle manifested as differences in carbon metabolism, methane metabolism, and carbon fixation pathways. Furthermore, an appropriate concentration of La can reduce the environmental toxicity of Pb, whereas a high concentration of La has synergistic toxicity with Pb. These findings have important implications for understanding the impact of HM-REE contamination in microbial communities and the functions associated with carbon metabolism in black soils.

Phytoremediation Potential of Native Plant Species in Mine Soils Polluted by Metal(loid)s and Rare Earth Elements

Mining activity has an adverse impact on the surrounding ecosystem, especially via the release of potentially toxic elements (PTEs); therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient technologies to remediate these ecosystems, especially soils. Phytoremediation can be potentially used to remediate contaminated areas by potentially toxic elements. However, in soils affected by polymetallic contamination, including metals, metalloids, and rare earth elements (REEs), it is necessary to evaluate the behavior of these toxic elements in the soil-plant system, which will allow the selection of the most appropriate native plants with phytoremediation potential to be used in phytoremediation programs. This study was conducted to evaluate the level of contamination of 29 metal(loid)s and REEs in two natural soils and four native plant species (Salsola oppositifolia, Stipa tenacissima, Piptatherum miliaceum, and Artemisia herba-alba) growing in the vicinity of a Pb-(Ag)-Zn mine and asses their phytoextraction and phytostabilization potential. The results indicated that very high soil contamination was found for Zn, Fe, Al, Pb, Cd, As, Se, and Th, considerable to moderate contamination for Cu, Sb, Cs, Ge Ni, Cr, and Co, and low contamination for Rb, V, Sr, Zr, Sn, Y, Bi and U in the study area, dependent of sampling place. Available fraction of PTEs and REEs in comparison to total concentration showed a wide range from 0% for Sn to more than 10% for Pb, Cd, and Mn. Soil properties such as pH, electrical conductivity, and clay content affect the total, available, and water-soluble concentrations of different PTEs and REEs. The results obtained from plant analysis showed that the concentration of PTEs in shoots could be at a toxicity level (Zn, Pb, and Cr), lower than toxic but more than sufficient or natural concentration accepted in plants (Cd, Ni, and Cu) or at an acceptable level (e.g., V, As, Co, and Mn). Accumulation of PTEs and REEs in plants and the translocation from root to shoot varied between plant species and sampling soils. A. herba-alba is the least efficient plant in the phytoremediation process; P. miliaceum was a good candidate for phytostabilization of Pb, Cd, Cu, V, and As, and S. oppositifolia for phytoextraction of Zn, Cd, Mn, and Mo. All plant species except A. herba-alba could be potential candidates for phytostabilization of REEs, while none of the plant species has the potential to be used in the phytoextraction of REEs.

Fate and Trophic Transfer of Rare Earth Elements in a Tropical Estuarine Food Web

We sampled abiotic and food web components in an impacted estuarine system to assess the transfer and fate of rare earth elements (REE). REE (based on dry weight) were measured in sediments, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and organisms from different trophic levels. The highest ∑REE concentrations were measured in sediments (180 ± 4.24 mg kg^-1) and SPM (163 ± 12.6 mg kg^-1). Phytoplankton (45.7 ± 5.31 mg kg^-1), periphyton (51.6 ± 1.81 mg kg^-1), and zooplankton (68.5 ± 1.27 mg kg^-1) are the major sources of exposure and transfer of REE to the food web. REE concentrations were several orders of magnitude lower in bivalves, crustaceans, and fish (6.01 ± 0.11, 1.22 ± 0.18, and 0.059 ± 0.003 mg kg^-1, respectively) than in plankton. The ∑REE declined as a function of the trophic position, as determined by functional feeding groups and δ¹⁵N, indicating that REE were subject to trophic dilution. Our study suggests that the consumption of seafood is unlikely to be an important source of REE for humans. However, given the numerous sources of dietary introduction of REE, they should be monitored for a possible harmful cumulative effect. This study provides new key information on REE's baseline concentrations and trophic transfers and patterns.

Effect of cerium on the production of reactive oxygen species in the root of Arabidopsis thaliana: An in vitro study

In the current study, the effect of trivalent cerium (Ce³⁺ ) on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was investigated in the root of Arabidopsis thaliana by an in vitro study. The roots of A. thaliana were exposed with 0, 1, and 5 μmol/L Ce³⁺ for 12 h in vitro. It was found that the level of H₂ O₂ , O₂ ^.- , and ·OH was enhanced by 5 μmol/L Ce³⁺ , but reduced by 1 μmol/L Ce³⁺ . The activities of peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and superoxidase dismutase (SOD) were enhanced by 1 μmol/L Ce³⁺ , but reduced by 5 μmol/L Ce³⁺ . Moreover, we used a laser-scanning confocal microscopy to detect the changes of ROS in the root cells of A. thaliana by using a fluorochrome 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (H₂ DCF-DA). It showed that the level of ROS was declined in the root cells treated by 1 μmol/L Ce³⁺ , but the oscillation of ROS was found in the root cells treated with 5 μmol/L Ce³⁺ . In addition, REEs affect the uptake of mineral elements, which may be related to the oxidative stress in the cells of roots. In all, the data of our study indicated that the appropriate concentration of Ce³⁺ exhibited an anti-oxidation property and improved the defense system in the root cells of A. thaliana.

Accumulation and distribution characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs) in the naturally grown marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) from the soil

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered environmental pollutants that have received extensive attention recently. The accumulation of REEs in plants is important because REEs can eventually enter the human body via the food chain. Marigolds are widely utilized as medicinal and commercial plants in medicine, feed, and therapeutics. Due to the extremely high demand for marigold in global, it is urgent to investigate the accumulation and distribution of REEs in marigold plants to reduce human and animal health risks. Marigold leaves tended to bioaccumulate the highest amounts of REEs from soil compared with other tissues. The distribution patterns of REEs in marigold were similar to those in the rhizosphere soil, which was enriched in light rare earth elements. Cerium accumulated most in marigold and soil, accounting for nearly 50% of ΣREEs, followed by lanthanum, neodymium, and yttrium. Roots were the most susceptible tissue affected by soil REE concentration, and a significant positive correlation was observed for REEs in the roots of marigold and soils (R = 0.87), while no significant correlation was observed for REEs in soils and other tissues. REEs were poorly transferred from soil to marigold, with bioaccumulation factor values for all tissues of marigold less than one. Additionally, REEs exhibited a positive correlation with Al and Fe in the roots, stems, leaves, and flowers of marigold. The present research revealed the biological interactions between marigold and soil and the distribution of REEs in various parts of marigold. It provides a reference for large-scale commercial cultivation and potential environmental risk in the future.

The elements of life: A biocentric tour of the periodic table

Living systems are built from a small subset of the atomic elements, including the bulk macronutrients (C,H,N,O,P,S) and ions (Mg,K,Na,Ca) together with a small but variable set of trace elements (micronutrients). Here, we provide a global survey of how chemical elements contribute to life. We define five classes of elements: those that are (i) essential for all life, (ii) essential for many organisms in all three domains of life, (iii) essential or beneficial for many organisms in at least one domain, (iv) beneficial to at least some species, and (v) of no known beneficial use. The ability of cells to sustain life when individual elements are absent or limiting relies on complex physiological and evolutionary mechanisms (elemental economy). This survey of elemental use across the tree of life is encapsulated in a web-based, interactive periodic table that summarizes the roles chemical elements in biology and highlights corresponding mechanisms of elemental economy.

The stimulatory effect and mechanism of low-dose lanthanum on soybean leaf cells

Light rare earth elements (LREEs) have been long used in agriculture (i.e., mainly via aerially applied LREE fertilizers) based on the fact that low-dose LREEs promote plant growth. Meanwhile, the toxic effects of low-dose LREEs on organisms have also been found. However, the cellular and molecular mechanism of low-dose LREEs acting on organisms remain unclear. Plants are at the beginning of food chains, so it is critical to uncover the cellular and molecular mechanism of low-dose LREEs on plants. Here, lanthanum (La) and soybean were the representatives of LREEs and plants, respectively. The effects of low-dose La on soybean leaves were investigated, and the stimulatory effect and mechanism of low-dose LREEs on leaf cells were revealed. Specifically, clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) activated by low-dose La is an influx channel for La in soybean leaf cells. The intracellular La and La-activated CME jointly disturbed multiple forms of intracellular homeostasis, including metallic element homeostasis, redox homeostasis, gene expression homeostasis. The disturbed homeostasis either stimulated cell growth or caused damage to the plasma membrane of soybean leaf cells. These results provide new insights for clarifying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of low-dose LREEs as a class of stimulators instead of nutrients to stimulate plants.

Increasing Temperatures Potentiate the Damage of Rare Earth Element Yttrium to the Crop Plant Triticum aestivum L

Given that increasing temperature may aggravate the toxicity of pollutants, it is a daunting challenge to evaluate the realistic risks of rare earth elements (REEs) under global warming. Here, we studied how elevated temperatures (27 and 32 °C) impact the effect of yttrium (Y) on wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) at concentrations not causing effects (0, 0.5, and 1 μM) at the control temperature (22 °C) in a hydroponic system. After 14 days of exposure, significant inhibition (p < 0.05, 29.5%) of root elongation was observed only at 1 μM of Y at 32 °C. Exposure to Y at 27 °C showed no visible effects on root length, but induced significant (p < 0.05) metabolic disorders of a range of carbohydrates and amino acids related to galactose, phenylalanine, and glutamate metabolisms. Such cases were even shifted to substantial perturbation of the nucleotide pool reallocation involved in the disruption of purine and pyrimidine metabolism at 32 °C. These observations were regulated by sets of genes involved in these perturbed pathways. Using weighted gene co-expression network analysis, the disorder of nucleotide metabolism was shown to be responsible for the aggravated Y phytotoxicity at the extreme high temperature. Although the temperature fluctuation considered seems to be in an extreme range, unexpected implications driven by high temperature cannot be neglected. Our findings thus reduce the gaps of knowledge in REE toxicity to plants under future climate warming scenarios and highlight the importance of incorporating environmental temperature into the framework of the risk assessment of REEs.

Mechanisms of cerium-induced stress in plants: A meta-analysis

A comprehensive evaluation of the effects of cerium on plants is lacking even though cerium is extensively applied to the environment. Here, the effects of cerium on plants were meta-analyzed using a newly developed database consisting of approximately 8500 entries of published data. Cerium affects plants by acting as oxidative stressor causing hormesis, with positive effects at low concentrations and adverse effects at high doses. Production of reactive oxygen species and its linked induction of antioxidant enzymes (e.g. catalase and superoxide dismutase) and non-enzymatic antioxidants (e.g. glutathione) are major mechanisms driving plant response mechanisms. Cerium also affects redox signaling, as indicated by altered GSH/GSSG redox pair, and electrolyte leakage, Ca²⁺, K⁺, and K⁺/Na⁺, indicating an important role of K⁺ and Na⁺ homeostasis in cerium-induced stress and altered mineral (ion) balance. The responses of the plants to cerium are further extended to photosynthesis rate (A), stomatal conductance (g_s), photosynthetic efficiency of PSII, electron transport rate, and quantum yield of PSII. However, photosynthesis response is regulated not only by physiological controls (e.g. g_s), but also by biochemical controls, such as via changed Hill reaction and RuBisCO carboxylation. Cerium concentrations <0.1-25 mg L^-1 commonly enhance chlorophyll a and b, g_s, A, and plant biomass, whereas concentrations >50 mg L^-1 suppress such fitness-critical traits at trait-specific concentrations. There was no evidence that cerium enhances yields. Observations were lacking for yield response to low concentrations of cerium, whereas concentrations >50 mg Kg^-1 suppress yields, in line with the response of chlorophyll a and b. Cerium affects the uptake and tissue concentrations of several micro- and macro-nutrients, including heavy metals. This study enlightens the understanding of some mechanisms underlying plant responses to cerium and provides critical information that can pave the way to reducing the cerium load in the environment and its associated ecological and human health risks.

Rare earth elements - Source and evolution in an aquatic system dominated by mine-Influenced waters

Acid mine drainage (AMD), formed by the instability of sulfides, typically generates acidity and releases potentially toxic elements and sulfate to the environment, among other pollutants. An example is the group of rare earth elements (REE) that may have high toxic behavior. This toxicity leads to degradation of soils, water reservoirs and rivers, promoting serious risks for the ecosystems. So, the main goal of the present work is to study the hydrochemical properties of a system with mine-influenced waters during the rainy season, focusing on the origin, evolution/behavior, and concentration of REE. The study area is the São Domingos mining complex, located in one of the largest metallogenetic provinces in the world (Iberian Pyrite Belt), known by the evidences of AMD contamination. The obtained results reveal extraordinarily low pH (0.4), high electrical conductivity, reaching 26,200 μS/cm, and high values of sulfate and acidity. Regarding the REE, the determined concentration exceeded that observed in normal pH of neutral freshwaters by 2-3 times the order of magnitude. The results revealed that Y and Ce are distinguished in practically all sampled sites, due to its higher concentrations, with maximum values of 221.8 and 166.9 μg/L. In general, the concentrations increase as the water pH decreases. The statistical analysis indicates that REE elements may have a common origin, mutual dependence, and similar behavior during transport with typical AMD elements and composition of host rocks. Most samples show enrichment in middle REE (MREE) (Gdn/Lun), like the classic signature of AMD. In turn, colloids and AMD-precipitates may be participating in the incorporation of these elements. Therefore, due to potential risk of impacts on ecosystems, REE are a topic of relevant interest for future studies in order to assist monitoring processes and help government decisions related to water quality management.

Multiscale imaging on Saxifraga paniculata provides new insights into yttrium uptake by plants

Yttrium (Y) has gained importance in high tech applications and, together with the other rare earth elements (REEs), is also considered to be an emerging environmental pollutant. The alpine plant Saxifraga paniculata was previously shown to display high metal tolerance and an intriguing REE accumulation potential. In this study, we analysed soil grown commercial and wild specimens of Saxifraga paniculata to assess Y accumulation and shed light on the uptake pathway. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and synchrotron-based micro X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was used to localise Y within the plant tissues and identify colocalized elements. Y was distributed similarly in commercial and wild specimens. Within the roots, Y was mostly located in the epidermis region. Translocation was low, but wild individuals accumulated significantly more Y than commercial ones. In plants of both origins, we observed consistent colocalization of Al, Fe, Y and Ce in all plant parts except for the hydathodes. This indicates a shared pathway during translocation and could explained by the formation of a stable organic complex with citrate, for example. Our study provides important insights into the uptake pathway of Y in S. paniculata, which can be generalised to other plants.

Environmental settings of seagrass meadows control rare earth element distribution and transfer from soil to plant compartments

The role of seagrass meadows in the cycling and accumulation of rare earth elements and yttrium (REEY) is unknown. Here, we measured the concentration of REEY in the different compartments of Halodule wrightii (shoots, rhizomes, and roots) and soils in seagrass meadows near sandy beaches, mangroves, and coral reefs in the Todos os Santos Bay, Brazil. We provide data on the accumulation dynamics of REEY in seagrass compartments and demonstrate that plant compartments and soil properties determine accumulation patterns. The ∑REEY in soils were ~1.7-fold higher near coral reefs (93.0 ± 5.61 mg kg^-1) than near mangrove sites (53.9 ± 31.5 mg kg^-1) and were slightly higher than in sandy beaches (81.7 ± 49.1 mg kg^-1). The ∑REEY in seagrasses varied between 35.4 ± 28.1 mg kg^-1 near coral reefs to 59.2 ± 21.3 mg kg^-1 near sandy beaches, respectively. The ∑REE bioaccumulation factor (BAF) was highest in seagrass roots near sandy beaches (BAF = 0.67 ± 0.48). All values of ∑REE translocation are <1, indicating inefficient translocation of REE from roots to rhizome to shoot. PAAS normalized REE was enriched in light REE (LREE) over heavy REE (HREE). The REEY accumulation in Halodule wrightii revealed a low potential of the seagrass to act as a sink for these elements. However, their bioavailability and potential uptake may change with soil properties. Our results serve as a basis for a better understanding of REE biogeochemical cycling and its fate in the marine environment. REE have experienced increased use as they are central to new technologies revealing an urgent need for further investigations of potential impacts on coastal ecosystems.

Naturally grown duckweeds as quasi-hyperaccumulators of rare earth elements and yttrium in aquatic systems and the biounavailability of gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents

The use of rare earths and yttrium (REY) in high-technology products is accompanied by their increasing release into the environment. Concerns regarding the (eco-)toxicity and bioaccumulation of these emerging contaminants highlight the need for research on REY uptake by (aquatic) plants. Duckweeds are widespread macrophytes in lentic waters and receive increasing attention as a potential protein-rich food additive. We here provide a baseline dataset for the complete set of REY in naturally grown duckweed assemblages and ambient freshwater and coastal brackish seawater. Our results show that duckweeds strongly bioaccumulate REY and incorporate them at the μg/kg level (dry matter basis). Their shale-normalised (_SN) REY patterns are mildly fractionated relative to upper continental crust, regardless of sampling location and season. In contrast, the patterns of ambient waters increase from light to heavy REY (LREY and HREY, resp.) and may show prominent positive anthropogenic Gd_SN anomalies due to the presence of Gd-based contrast agents (Gd-CAs) applied for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The lack of Gd_SN anomalies in the duckweed assemblages reveals discrimination against the uptake of Gd-CAs by the macrophytes, providing further evidence for the conservative behaviour of these xenobiotics in the environment. High REY concentrations and apparent bulk distribution coefficients between duckweeds and ambient waters of up to 10⁵ show that duckweeds are quasi-hyperaccumulators of REY. Uptake of LREY is up to two orders of magnitude higher than of HREY, possibly due to stronger complexation of HREY with dissolved ligands. The REY closely correlate with Mn but not with Ca, suggesting that uptake of REY and Mn occurs via the same pathway and revealing the negligible role of calcium oxalates. Our study demonstrates that while duckweeds are quasi-hyperaccumulators of REY, there is currently no risk that anthropogenic Gd from MRI contrast agents may enter the food chain via consumption of duckweeds.
