Abstract
High fertilizer input and nitric oxide (NO) emissions characterize the intensive vegetable production system. However, the amount, geographic distribution, and effective mitigation strategies of NO emissions over Chinese vegetable fields remain largely uncertain. In this study, we developed a data-driven estimate of NO emissions and their spatial pattern in Chinese vegetable fields based on the Random Forest (RF) model. Additionally, we conducted a field experiment in a subtropical vegetable field to investigate the effect of climate-smart practices on NO emissions. The RF model results showed that soil NO emissions from Chinese vegetable fields were sensitive to nitrogen application amount, soil clay content, and pH. The total NO emission from Chinese vegetable fields in 2018 was estimated to be 75.9 Gg NO-N. The urgency to reduce NO emissions in vegetable fields was higher in northern than in southern China. Our meta-analysis and field experiment results suggested that biochar amendment and replacing chemical fertilizers with bio-organic fertilizers were win-win climate-smart management practices for mitigating NO emissions while improving vegetable production. Overall, our study provided new insights into NO emissions in vegetable soil ecosystems and can facilitate the development of regional NO emission inventories and effective mitigation strategies. These findings highlight the importance of adopting sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices to reduce NO emissions and mitigate their adverse environmental impacts.

Abstract
Reducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from farmland is crucial for alleviating global warming since agriculture is an important contributor of atmospheric N2O. Returning biochar to agricultural fields is an important measure to mitigate soil N2O emissions. Accurately quantifying the effect of biochar on the process of N2O production and its driving factors is critical for achieving N2O emission mitigation. Recently, stable isotope techniques such as isotope labeling, natural abundance, and site preference (SP) value, have been widely used to distinguish N2O production pathways. However, the different isotope methods have certain limitations in distinguishing N2O production in biochar-amended soils where it is difficult to identify the relative contribution of individual pathways for N2O production. This paper systematically reviews the pathways of soil N2O production (nitrification, nitrifier denitrification, bacterial denitrification, fungal denitrification, coupled nitrification-denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and abiotic processes) and their response mechanism to the addition of biochar, as well as the development history and advantages of isotopes in differentiating N2O production pathways in biochar-amended soils. Moreover, the limitations of current research methods and future research directions are proposed. These results will help resolve how biochar affects different processes that lead to soil N2O generation and provide a scientific basis for sustainable agricultural carbon sequestration and the fulfilment of carbon neutrality goals.

Abstract
Biochar can inhibit soil acidification by decreasing the H+ input from nitrification and improving soil pH buffering capacity (pHBC). However, biochar is a complex material and the roles of its different components in inhibiting soil acidification induced by nitrification remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, dissolved biochar fractions (DBC) and solid biochar particles (SBC) were separated and mixed thoroughly with an amended Ultisol. Following a urea addition, the soils were subjected to an incubation study. The results showed that both the DBC and SBC inhibited soil acidification by nitrification. The DBC inhibited soil acidification by decreasing the H+ input from nitrification, while SBC enhanced the soil pHBC. The DBC from peanut straw biochar (PBC) and rice straw biochar (RBC) decreased the H+ release by 16 % and 18 % at the end of incubation. The decrease in H+ release was attributed to the inhibition of soil nitrification and net mineralization caused by the toxicity of the phenols in DBC to soil bacteria. The abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and total bacteria decreased by >60 % in the treatments with DBC. The opposite effects were observed in the treatments with SBC. Soil pHBC increased by 7 % and 19 % after the application of solid RBC and PBC particles, respectively. The abundance of carboxyl on the surface of SBC was mainly responsible for the increase in soil pHBC. Generally, the mixed application of DBC and SBC was more effective at inhibiting soil acidification than their individual applications. The negative impacts of dissolved biochar components on soil microorganisms need to be closely monitored.

Abstract
Soil nitrification driven by ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms is the most important source of nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO). Biochar amendment has been proposed as the most promising measure for combating climate warming; both have the potential to regulate the soil nitrification process. However, the comprehensive impacts of different aged biochars and warming combinations on soil nitrification-related N2O and NO production are not well understood. Here, 1-octyne and acetylene were used to investigate the relative contributions of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) to potential nitrification-mediated N2O and NO production from the fertilized vegetable soil with different aged biochar amendments and soil temperatures in microcosm incubations. Results demonstrated that AOB dominated nitrification-related N2O and NO production across biochar additions and climate warming. Biochar amendment did not significantly influence the relative contribution of AOB and AOA to N2O and NO production. Field-aged biochar markedly reduced N2O and NO production via inhibiting AOB-amoA gene abundance and AOB-dependent N2O yield while fresh- and lab-aged biochar produced negligible effects on AOB-dependent N2O yield. Climate warming significantly increased N2O production and AOB-dependent N2O yield but less so on NO production. Notably, the relative contribution of AOB to N2O production was enhanced by climate warming, whereas AOB-derived NO showed the opposite tendency. Overall, the results revealed that field-aged biochar contributed to mitigating warming-induced increases in N2O and NO production via inhibiting AOB-amoA gene abundance and AOB-dependent N2O yield. Our findings provided guidance for mitigating nitrogen oxide emissions in intensively managed vegetable production under the context of biochar amendments and climate warming.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs, <5 mm) are enriched in paddy ecosystems as emerging environmental pollutants. Biochar (BC) is a controversial recalcitrant carbon product that poses potential environmental risks. The presence of these two exogenous organic substances has been demonstrated to have impacts on soil nitrogen cycling and crop production. However, the after-effects of MPs and BC on soil ammonia (NH3) volatilization and rice yield after field aging remain unexplored. In this study, two common MPs, including polyethylene (PE) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and BC were selected for rice growing season observations to study the impacts on soil NH3 volatilization and rice yield after field aging. The results showed that the reduction of cumulative soil NH3 losses by MPs was around 45% after one-year field aging, which was within the range of 40-57% in the previous rice season. Abatement of NH3 volatilization by MPs mainly occurred in basal fertilization and was related to floodwater pH. Besides, the reduction rate of NH3 volatilization by BC and MPs + BC was enhanced after field aging (63% and 50-57%) compared to that in the previous rice season (5% and 11-19%), with the abatement process occurring in the first supplementary fertilization. There was a significant positive correlation between cumulative NH3 volatilization and soil urease activity. Notably, field aging removed the positive effect of MPs and MPs + BC in reducing yield-scale NH3 losses in the previous rice season (∼62%). Furthermore, despite BC affecting rice yield insignificantly after field aging, the presence of MPs led to a significant 17-19% reduction in rice yield. Our findings reveal that differences in the after-effects of BC and MPs in field aging emerge, where the negative impacts of MPs on soil NH3 abatement and crop yield are progressively becoming apparent and should be taken into serious consideration.
