Large-flake graphene-modified biochar for the removal of bisphenol S from water: rapid oxygen escape mechanism for synthesis and improved adsorption performance

Green synthesis of nZVI-modified biochar significantly enhanced the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution

Water contamination by hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) seriously jeopardizes human health, which is a pressing environmental concern. Biochar-loaded green-synthesized nZVI, as a green and environmentally friendly material, can efficiently reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) while removing Cr(VI) from water. Therefore, in this study, an efficient green-modified biochar material (TP-nZVI/BC) was successfully prepared using tea polyphenol (TP) and sludge biochar (BC) using a low-cost and environmentally friendly green synthesis method. The preparation conditions of TP-nZVI/BC were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), revealing that the dosage of tea polyphenols plays a crucial role in the removal performance (R2 = 1271.09), followed by reaction time and temperature. The quadratic regression model proved accurate. The optimal preparation conditions are as follows: tea polyphenols (TP) dosage at 48 g/L, reaction temperature at 75 ℃, and a reaction time of 3 h. TP-nZVI/BC removed Cr(VI) from water at a rate 7.6 times greater than BC. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.987) accurately describes the adsorption process, suggesting that chemical adsorption predominantly controls the removal process. The adsorption of Cr(VI) by TP-nZVI/BC can be well described by the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 105.65 mg/g. FTIR and XPS analyses before and after adsorption demonstrate that nZVI plays a crucial role in the reduction process of Cr(VI), and the synergistic effects of surface adsorption, reduction, and co-precipitation enhance Cr(VI) removal. In summary, using green-modified biochar for Cr(VI) removal is a feasible and promising method with significant potential.

Recent trends and economic significance of modified/functionalized biochars for remediation of environmental pollutants

The pollution of soil and aquatic systems by inorganic and organic chemicals has become a global concern. Economical, eco-friendly, and sustainable solutions are direly required to alleviate the deleterious effects of these chemicals to ensure human well-being and environmental sustainability. In recent decades, biochar has emerged as an efficient material encompassing huge potential to decontaminate a wide range of pollutants from soil and aquatic systems. However, the application of raw biochars for pollutant remediation is confronting a major challenge of not getting the desired decontamination results due to its specific properties. Thus, multiple functionalizing/modification techniques have been introduced to alter the physicochemical and molecular attributes of biochars to increase their efficacy in environmental remediation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in developing multiple functionalized/modified biochars via biological and other physiochemical techniques. Related mechanisms and further applications of multiple modified biochar in soil and water systems remediation have been discussed and summarized. Furthermore, existing research gaps and challenges are discussed, as well as further study needs are suggested. This work epitomizes the scientific prospects for a complete understanding of employing modified biochar as an efficient candidate for the decontamination of polluted soil and water systems for regenerative development.

Strategy and mechanisms of sulfamethoxazole removal from aqueous systems by single and combined Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and nanoscale zero-valent iron-enriched biochar

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX, a sulfonamide antibiotic) is ubiquitously present in various aqueous systems, which can accelerate the spread of antibiotic resistance genes, induce genetic mutations, and even disrupt the ecological equilibrium. Considering the potential eco-environmental risk of SMX, this study explored an effective technology using Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (MR-1) and nanoscale zero-valent iron-enriched biochar (nZVI-HBC) to remove SMX from aqueous systems with different pollution levels (1-30 mg·L^-1). SMX removal by nZVI-HBC and nZVI-HBC + MR-1 (55-100 %) under optimal conditions (iron/HBC ratio of 1:5, 4 g·L^-1 nZVI-HBC, and 10 % v/v MR-1) was more effective than its removal by MR-1 and biochar (HBC) (8-35 %). This was due to the catalytic degradation of SMX in the nZVI-HBC and nZVI-HBC + MR-1 reaction systems because of accelerated electron transfer during oxidation of nZVI and reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). When SMX concentration was lower than 10 mg·L^-1, nZVI-HBC + MR-1 effectively removed SMX (removal rate of approximately 100 %) when compared to nZVI-HBC (removal rate of 56-79 %). In addition to oxidation degradation of SMX by nZVI in the nZVI-HBC + MR-1 reaction system, MR-1-driven dissimilatory iron reduction accelerated electron transfer to SMX, thereby enhancing reductive degradation of SMX. However, a considerable decline in SMX removal from the nZVI-HBC + MR-1 system (42 %) was observed when SMX concentrations ranged 15-30 mg·L^-1, which was due to the toxicity of accumulated degradation products of SMX. A high interaction probability between SMX and nZVI-HBC promoted the catalytic degradation of SMX in the nZVI-HBC reaction system. The results of this study provide promising strategies and insights for enhancing antibiotic removal from aqueous systems with different pollution levels.

Effect of iron impregnation ratio on the properties and adsorption of KOH activated biochar for removal of tetracycline and heavy metals

The effect of iron impregnation ratio on magnetic biochars (MBCs) prepared by biomass pyrolysis accompanied by KOH activation has been less reported. In this study, MBCs were produced by one-step pyrolysis/KOH-activation of walnut shell, rice husk and cornstalk with different impregnation ratios (0.3-0.6). The properties, adsorption capacity and cycling performance for Pb(II), Cd(II) and tetracycline of MBCs were determined. MBCs prepared with low impregnation ratio (0.3) showed stronger adsorption capacity on tetracycline. The adsorption capacity of WS-0.3 toward tetracycline was up to 405.01 mg g^-1, while that of WS-0.6 was only 213.81 mg g^-1. It is noteworthy that rice husk and cornstalk biochar with an impregnation ratio of 0.6 were more effective in removing Pb(II) and Cd(II), and the content of Fe⁰ crystals on surface strengthened the ion exchange and chemical precipitation. This work highlights that the impregnation ratio should be changed according to the actual application scenarios of MBC.

Chitin and crawfish shell biochar composite decreased heavy metal bioavailability and shifted rhizosphere bacterial community in an arsenic/lead co-contaminated soil

Sustainable management of ever-increasing organic biowaste and arable soil contamination by potentially toxic elements are of concern from both environmental and agricultural perspectives. To tackle the waste issue of crawfish shells and simultaneously minimize the threat of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) to human health, a pot trial was conducted using chitin (CT), crawfish shell biochar (CSB), crawfish shell powder (CSP), and CT-CSB composite to compare their remediation efficiencies in As/Pb co-contaminated soil. Results demonstrated that addition of all amendments decreased Pb bioavailability, with the greatest effect observed for the CT-CSB treatment. Application of CSP and CSB increased the soil available As concentration, while significant decreases were observed in the CT and CT-CSB treatments. Meanwhile, CT addition was the most effective in enhancing the soil enzyme activities including acid phosphatase, α-glucosidase, N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase, and cellobiohydrolase, whereas CSB-containing treatments suppressed the activities of most enzymes. The amendments altered the bacterial abundance and composition in soil. For instance, compared to the control, all treatments increased Chitinophagaceae abundance by 2.6-4.7%. The relative abundance of Comamonadaceae decreased by 1.6% in the CSB treatment, while 2.1% increase of Comamonadaceae was noted in the CT-CSB treatment. Redundancy and correlation analyses (at the family level) indicated that the changes in bacterial community structure were linked to bulk density, water content, and As/Pb availability of soils. Partial least squares path modeling further indicated that soil chemical property (i.e., pH, dissolved organic carbon, and cation exchange capacity) was the strongest predictor of As/Pb availability in soils following amendment application. Overall, CT-CSB could be a potentially effective amendment for simultaneously immobilizing As and Pb and restoring soil ecological functions in contaminated arable soils.

Facile Phase Control and Photocatalytic Performance of BiVO4 Crystals for Methylene Blue Degradation

Emerging contaminants, which mainly exist as organic pollutants and pose adverse biological effects, could be removed using photocatalytic degradation, resulting in a low-cost and environmentally friendly solution. Herein, BiVO4 nanoparticles with different morphologies and photocatalytic performances were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment at different residence times. The XRD and SEM results indicate that the crystal phase of BiVO4 gradually transformed from a single tetragonal phase to a single monoclinic crystal phase as the hydrothermal time increased, and with the extension of the hydrothermal time, the morphology of BiVO4 nanoparticles gradually differentiated from a smooth spherical shape to flower-like shapes composed of polyhedrons; the size of the crystals also increased accordingly. Methylene blue (MB), used as a probe of organic pollutants, was degraded under visible light irradiation by all BiVO4 samples to investigate its photocatalytic activities. The experimental results show that the longer the hydrothermal time, the better the photocatalytic performance. The optimum hydrothermal time was 24 h, at which the sample showed the highest photocatalytic activity for MB degradation. This work shows a convenient strategy for control of the crystal phase of BiVO4-based photocatalysts based on the understanding of the crystal morphology evolution mechanism, which will benefit the researchers in designing new BiVO4-based photocatalysts with high efficiency for emerging contaminants' degradation.
