A stiff ZnO/carbon foam composite with second-level macroporous structure filled ZnO particles for heavy metal ions removal

Stabilization effect of nano-SiO2@iron-phosphorus on ferrallisols, calcareous soil and organic soil heavily polluted by heavy metals: A fast reaction curing stabilization process

The remediation of soil pollution by heavy metals (HMs) presents a significant challenge in environmental restoration. Stabilization remediation technology has proven effective in treating HMs contaminated soil. However, its development is constrained by drawbacks such as slow reaction kinetics and low adsorption capacity. This research synthesized a nano-SiO2@iron‑phosphorus (FPOH) material by SiO32- encapsulating the iron-phosphate precipitate obtained from Fe ion and phosphate. In addition, this research applied this material to ferrallisols, calcareous soils and organic soils with three different levels of high pollution by Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn. The experimental results indicate that all experimental soils stabilized rapidly within 1 day and met the requirements of remediation engineering standards (ChinaMEE HJ 1282-2023). Analysis of the possible mechanisms suggests that the FPOH material effectively fills voids with phosphate mineral formation, preventing the secondary release of HMs. During the stabilization process, FPOH involves the adsorption of free ions and small organic molecules in the soil, which does not affect its high reactivity. The development and utilization of FPOH offer valuable insights for soil stabilization remediation.

ZnO/PUF composites with a large capacity for phosphate adsorption: adsorption behavior and mechanism studies

Phosphate is present in all kinds of industrial wastewater; how to remove it to meet the strict total phosphorus discharge standards is a challenge. This study used a one-step foaming technique to fill polyurethane foam (PUF) with ZnO, taking advantage of PUF's excellent features like its porous network, lightweight, hydrophilicity, and abundance of binding sites to create ZnO/PUF composites with high adsorption capacity and exceptional separation properties. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics, starting pH, and matrix impacts of ZnO/PUF composites on phosphate were examined in batch studies. The results showed that the composites had good adsorption performance for phosphate with a saturated adsorption capacity of 460.25 mg/g. The quasi-secondary kinetic and Langmuir models could better describe the adsorption process, which belonged to the chemical adsorption of monomolecular layers. The composites' ability to treat phosphates in complicated waters was shown by their ability to retain a high adsorption capacity in the pH range of 3-6. In column experiments, the composite also maintains a good affinity for phosphate during dynamic adsorption. Multiple characterizations indicate that the adsorption mechanism is a combined effect of ligand exchange and electrostatic interactions. Therefore, this study provides valuable insights for practical phosphorus-containing wastewater treatment.

Adsorptive and photocatalytic degradation potential of porous polymeric materials for removal of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and dyes-based emerging contaminants from water

Life on earth is dependent on clean water, which is crucial for survival. Water supplies are getting contaminated due to the growing human population and its associated industrialization, urbanization, and chemically improved agriculture. Currently, a large number of people struggle to find clean drinking water, a problem that is particularly serious in developing countries. To meet the enormous demand of clean water around the world, there is an urgent need of advanced technologies and materials that are affordable, easy to use, thermally efficient, portable, environmentally benign, and chemically durable. The physical, chemical and biological methods are used to eliminate insoluble materials and soluble pollutants from wastewater. In addition to cost, each treatment carries its limitations in terms of effectiveness, productivity, environmental effect, sludge generation, pre-treatment demands, operating difficulties, and the creation of potentially hazardous byproducts. To overcome the problems of traditional methods, porous polymers have distinguished themselves as practical and efficient materials for the treatment of wastewater because of their distinctive characteristics such as large surface area, chemical versatility, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. This study overviews improvement in manufacturing methods and the sustainable usage of porous polymers for wastewater treatment and explicitly discusses the efficiency of advanced porous polymeric materials for the removal of emerging pollutants viz. pesticides, dyes, and pharmaceuticals whereby adsorption and photocatalytic degradation are considered to be among the most promising methods for their effective removal. Porous polymers are considered excellent adsorbents for the mitigation of these pollutants as they are cost-effective and have greater porosities to facilitate penetration and adhesion of pollutants, thus enhance their adsorption functionality. Appropriately functionalized porous polymers can offer the potential to eliminate hazardous chemicals and making water useful for a variety of purposes thus, numerous types of porous polymers have been selected, discussed and compared especially in terms of their efficiencies against specific pollutants. The study also sheds light on numerous challenges faced by porous polymers in the removal of contaminants, their solutions and some associated toxicity issues.

Ultra-purification of heavy metals and robustness of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) nanocomposites

For the sake of remediating the contamination of heavy metal ions (HMs) that poses high risk to the global environment, a novel inorganic nanocomposite with excellent robustness, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), is synthesized at extremely low cost yet presents rapid adsorption rate and superhigh adsorption capacity. High concentrations of Cu(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ) in wastewater can be purified to ultra-low level (∼0.008 mg L^-1) within 60 min at low C-S-H dosage, the concentration and pH indexes of which meet the standard for direct discharge in China. The adsorption processes are spontaneous, following the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, and its kinetics conforms to pseudo-second order model. Meanwhile, C-S-H presents excellent anti-interference performance during the ultra-purification of HMs when exposed to the acid environments, solutions with various HMs as well as high salinity. The ultra-purification of HMs and robustness of C-S-H is realized through multiple mechanisms based on adsorption, involving hydrolysis of HMs, electrostatic interaction, chemical microprecipitation, surface complexation and interlayer complexation, among which interlayer complexation is dominant. All these verify the robust performance and broad applicability of C-S-H to complex aqueous systems.

Integrated adsorption and photocatalytic degradation based removal of ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole antibiotics using Fc@rGO-ZnO nanocomposite in aqueous systems

Ferrocene functionalized rGO-ZnO nanocomposite was synthesized via the facile hydrothermal method. ZnO was reduced over the 3-dimensional rGO framework (3D-Fc@rGO) using Camellia sinensis extract. The Fc@rGO-ZnO nanocomposite was employed for pharmaceutical degradation (sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and ciprofloxacin (CIP)) in an aqueous solution under UV C light. The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared photocatalyst were characterized using FTIR, XRD, FESEM, EDS mapping, HR-TEM, XPS, and DR-UV Vis. The as-synthesized Fc@rGO-ZnO photocatalyst performed remarkably against pristine ZnO, with a fivefold increase in removal efficiency. This superior activity was attributed to its improved light harvesting, charge carrier interface, and enhanced charge separation. Additionally, the photocatalyst obeyed the Lagergen model for pseudo-first-order kinetics. Congruously, the integrated approach of Fc@rGO and ZnO as oxidizing agents was proficient in removing >95% of antibiotics (CIP and SMX) within 180 min. Furthermore, the heterostructure configuration developed between Fc@rGO and ZnO helps in charge migration and generation of abundant •OH and •O₂^- radicals for photodegradation activities. The toxicity assessment of the treated solutions showed improved cell viability in the algal strains of Scenedesmus and Chlorella sp. Moreover, this novel approach for the synthesis of a photoactive nanocomposite is found to be low-cost and reusable for three cycles. The nanocomposite is environmentally sustainable paving the way for practical applications in the treatment of different classes of antibiotics.

Functional cellulose aerogel nanocomposites with enhanced adsorption capability and excellent photocatalytic performance

A novel functional cellulose carbon aerogel@Na₂Ti₃O₇@Cu₂O (CA@Na₂Ti₃O₇@Cu₂O) nanocomposite was prepared by in situ growth technique and impregnation method, and its photocatalytic and adsorption properties were explored. The cationic intercalation structure of Na₂Ti₃O₇ nanosheets gives CA@Na₂Ti₃O₇@Cu₂O nanocomposites excellent adsorption capacity of heavy metal ions (31.0-118.7 mg/g). The Cu₂O nanoparticles in CA@Na₂Ti₃O₇@Cu₂O nanocomposite showed excellent photocatalytic activity, and the removal rate of methylene blue (MB) was up to 99 %. Furthermore, the CA@Na₂Ti₃O₇@Cu₂O nanocomposites could be easily regenerated and reused, providing a new way to effectively solve the problem of wastewater treatment containing heavy metal ions and organic dyes.

CO2 Sorbents Based on Spherical Carbon and Photoactive Metal Oxides: Insight into Adsorption Capacity, Selectivity and Regenerability

This work aimed to obtain hybrid composites based on photoactive metal oxide and carbon having adsorption properties. The materials, composed of titanium dioxide or zinc oxide and spherical carbon, were obtained from resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, treated in a solvothermal reactor heated with microwaves and then subjected to carbonization, were received. The functional groups of pure carbon spheres (unsaturated stretching C=C, stretching C−OH and C−H bending vibrations), CS/ZnO and CS/TiO₂ samples were determined by FT-IR analysis. The characteristic bands for ZnO and TiO₂ were observed below 1000 cm⁻¹. The thermal oxidative properties are similar for TiO₂- and ZnO-modified carbon spheres. We have observed that the increased carbon sphere content in nanocomposites results in starting the decomposition process at a lower temperature, therefore, nanocomposites have a broader combustion temperature range. The effect of the oxides’ addition to carbon spheres on their adsorption properties was evaluated in detail by examining CO₂ adsorption from the gas phase. The selectivity of CO₂ over N₂ at a temperature of 25 °C and pressure of 1 bar (a novelty in testing CS-based sorbents) calculated for 3.00 CS/TiO₂ and 4.00 CS/ZnO was 15.09 and 16.95, respectively. These nanocomposites exhibit excellent cyclic stability checked over 10 consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles.

Electrochemically enhanced adsorption of organic dyes from aqueous using a freestanding metal-organic frameworks/cellulose-derived porous monolithic carbon foam

Monolithic carbon foams are promising materials for adsorption due to the easy recyclability and without secondary-pollution. However, poor adsorption efficiency for organic pollutants limits its practical application. Hence, this work proposed a novel monolithic porous carbon foam by a facile carbonization approach as freestanding electrodes to remove the organic dyes. The prepared carbon foam derived from waste cigarette filters and zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks-8 with well-developed pores, and the calculated surface area is 1457 m²·g^-1, and exhibited an outstanding removal efficiency for methylene blue in aqueous. The maximum adsorption capacity for methylene blue can reach up to 1846.7 mg·g^-1 under the applied voltage of -1.2 V. Importantly, as-prepared carbon foams possessed excellent stability, and the removal efficiency can remain above 85% after 5 cycles. Thus, obtained porous carbon foams in this paper as a free standing electrode is expected to be promising materials of adsorbent besides supercapacitors.

Effective degradation of tetracycline by organic-inorganic hybrid materials induced by triethylenediamine

As an important advanced oxidation technology for environmental purification, photocatalytic degradation has received extensive attention. Designing and synthesizing a catalyst with high-intensity photocatalytic performance is a very challenging subject. Herein, one polydentate cation was synthesized by 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and 1, 4-bis (bromomethyl) benzene. Inorganic-organic hybrid compounds 1, 2 were synthesized by hydrothermal and room temperature volatilization with inorganic metal salts, namely, {[L1]_0.5·[Cu₂Br₄]_0.5}_n (1), {[L1]·[Cu₂I₄]·CH₃CN}_n (2). Under visible light, compounds 1 and 2 were investigated for their degradation effects on tetracycline (TC) in water. The experimental results showed that compounds 1 and 2 with appropriate concentration of H₂O₂ had obvious photocatalytic degradation effect on TC. In addition, the influencing factors of photocatalysis such as the amount of adsorbent, the initial concentration of TC and the different pH value were investigated. The photocatalyst exhibits good stability and cyclability.

Enhanced removal of Cd (II) from aqueous solution by EDTA functionalized three-dimensional magnetic nitrogen-doped porous carbon

In this paper, three-dimensional magnetic nitrogen-doped porous carbon modified by EDTA (N-MPC-EDTA) was successfully prepared by two-step method with lignin as the precursor, and was used for the removal of Cd (II). The 3D adsorbents were characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, XRD, XPS, Zeta potential, and element mapping analysis techniques, and the performance of the materials was tested by the batch adsorption method. The influence of experimental parameters such as contact time and pH value on the adsorption capacity of N-MPC-EDTA on Cd (II) was studied. Under the optimal conditions, the equilibrium adsorption capacity of Cd (II) was 43.68 mg∙ L^-1 and the adsorption equilibrium was quickly reached within 45 min. A possible adsorption mechanism was proposed, in which the chelation of EDTA as well as the electrostatic attraction of hydroxyl, carboxyl, and nitrogen-containing functional groups dominated the adsorption of Cd (II). The adsorption kinetics and isotherm data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich model, respectively. In addition, the good regeneration performance suggested that N-MPC-EDTA will have a broad application prospect in water treatment.
