The enhanced photocatalytic inactivation of marine microorganisms over ZnO supported Ag quantum dots by the synthesis of H2O2

Robust Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photosynthesis of H2O2: Advancements, Challenges and Strategies

Since 2020, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging as robust catalysts for the photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), benefiting from their distinct advantages. However, the current efficiency of H2O2 production and solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency (SCC) remain suboptimal due to various constraints in the reaction mechanism. Therefore, there is an imperative to propose efficiency improvement strategies to accelerate the development of this reaction system. This comprehensive review delineates recent advances, challenges, and strategies in utilizing COFs for photocatalytic H2O2 production. It explores the fundamentals and challenges (e.g., oxygen (O2) mass transfer rate, O2 adsorption capacity, response to sunlight, electron-hole separation efficiency, charge transfer efficiency, selectivity, and H2O2 desorption) associated with this process, as well as the advantages, applications, classification, and preparation strategies of COFs for this purpose. Various strategies to enhance the performance of COFs in H2O2 production are highlighted. The review aims to stimulate further advancements in utilizing COFs for photocatalytic H2O2 production and discusses potential prospects, challenges, and application areas in this field.

Recent developments in photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an environmentally friendly strong oxidant and energy carrier, has attracted widespread attention in photocatalysis. Artificial photosynthesis of H2O2 using water and oxygen as raw materials, solar energy as an energy source, and semiconductor materials as catalysts is considered a promising technology. In the past few decades, encouraging progress has been made in the photocatalytic production of H2O2. Therefore, we summarize the research achievements in this field in recent years. This review first briefly introduces the reaction pathway, detection techniques and evaluation metrics. Then, the recent advances in photocatalysts are highlighted. Furthermore, the existing challenges and possible solutions in this field are presented. At last, we look forward to the future development direction of this field. This review provides valuable insights and guidance for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production.

Adsorptive removal of Ag/Au quantum dots onto covalent organic frameworks@magnetic zeolite@arabic gum hydrogel and their catalytic microwave-Fenton oxidative degradation of Rifampicin antibiotic

Recent progress in nanotechnology via incorporation of small particle size as quantum dots (QDs) (1-10 nm) in many industrial activities and commercial products has led to significant undesired environmental impacts. Therefore, QDs removal from wastewater represents an interesting research topic with a lot of challenges for scientists and engineers nowadays. In this work, the coagulative removal of metal quantum dots as silver and gold from industrial water samples is explored. A novel biosorbent was assembled via binding of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with magnetic zeolite and Arabic gum hydrogel (COFs@MagZ@AGH) as a promising removal material for Ag-QDs and Au-QDs. This was fully characterized by EDX, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, XRD and surface area and applied in coagulative removal of Au-QDs and Ag-QDs in presence of several experimental factors as pH, presence of other electrolytes, stirring time, initial QDs concentration, coagulant dosage, and temperature in order to optimize the removal processes. At optimum conditions, COFs@MagZ@AGH was able to recover 99.19% and 87.57% of Ag-QDs and Au-QDs QDs, respectively via chemical adsorption mechanism with perfect fitting to pseudo-second order model. Reuse of the recovered Ag/Au-QDs@COFs@MagZ@AGH as efficient catalysts in catalytic degradation of Rifampicin antibiotic (Rf) from water was additionally investigated and optimized via microwave-Fenton catalysts with excellent oxidative degradation efficiency (100%). Reusability and applicability of the biosorbent (COFs@MagZ@AGH) and catalysts (Ag/Au-QDs@COFs@MagZ@AGH) in real industrial water samples were also explored and successfully accomplished.

Silver based photocatalysts in emerging applications

The infinite availability of solar energy grants the potential of fulfilling the energy demands and environmental sustainability requirements with more feasible and reliant renewable energy forms through photocatalysis. In the past decade, the intensive plasmonic effect, suitable work function, superior electrical conductivity and physiochemical properties have made Ag-based photocatalysts attractive components for emerging applications. The local surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR) provides extra hot-carriers to participate in the photocatalytic process, and Schottky/Ohmic contacts would facilitate charge transfer. Here, recent studies focused on Ag-based photocatalysts for emerging applications are reviewed. Notably, the mechanisms of LSPR, the Schottky barrier and ohmic contacts are introduced together with urgent issues in CO₂ reduction, antibacterial application, H₂ generation, and environmental hazard removal. Additionally, some perspectives and directions on more comprehensive designs on material system, band alignment and functionalization are given to further the exploration in this research area.

A Tandem Reaction System for Inactivation of Marine Microorganisms by Commercial Carbon Black and Boron-Doped Carbon Nitride

The Pureballast system, based on photocatalytic technology, can purify ships' ballast water. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic sterilization still needs to be improved due to the shortcomings of the photocatalyst itself and the complex components of seawater. In this work, a tandem reaction of electrocatalytic synthesis and photocatalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) was constructed for the inactivation of marine microorganisms. Using seawater and air as raw materials, electrocatalytic synthesis of H₂O₂ by commercial carbon black can avoid the risk of large-scale storage and transportation of H₂O₂ on ships. In addition, boron doping can improve the photocatalytic decomposition performance of H₂O₂ by g-C₃N₄. Experimental results show that constructing the tandem reaction is effective, inactivating 99.7% of marine bacteria within 1 h. The sterilization efficiency is significantly higher than that of the single way of electrocatalysis (52.8%) or photocatalysis (56.9%). Consequently, we analyzed the reasons for boron doping to enhance the efficiency of g-C₃N₄ decomposition of H₂O₂ based on experiments and first principles. The results showed that boron doping could significantly enhance not only the transfer kinetics of photogenerated electrons but also the adsorption capacity of H₂O₂. This work can provide some reference for the photocatalytic technology study of ballast water treatment.

Inorganic Metal-Oxide Photocatalyst for H2 O2 Production

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) is a mild but versatile oxidizing agent with extensive applications in bleaching, wastewater purification, medical treatment, and chemical synthesis. The state-of-art H₂ O₂ production via anthraquinone oxidation is hardly considered a cost-efficient and environment-friendly process because it requires high energy input and generates hazardous organic wastes. Photocatalytic H₂ O₂ production is a green, sustainable, and inexpensive process which only needs water and gaseous dioxygen as the raw materials and sunlight as the power source. Inorganic metal oxide semiconductors are good candidates for photocatalytic H₂ O₂ production due to their abundance in nature, biocompatibility, exceptional stability, and low cost. Progress has been made to enhance the photocatalytic activity toward H₂ O₂ production, however, H₂ O₂ photosynthesis is still in the laboratory research phase since the productivity is far from satisfaction. To inspire innovative ideas for boosting the H₂ O₂ yield in photocatalysis, the most well-studied metal oxide photocatalysts are selected and the modification strategies to improve their activity are listed. The mechanisms for H₂ O₂ production over modified photocatalysts are discussed to highlight the facilitating role of the modification methods. Besides, methods for the quantification of H₂ O₂ and associated radical intermediates are provided to guide future studies in this field.

Adsorption behavior of silver quantum dots by a novel super magnetic CoFe2O4-biochar-polymeric nanocomposite

Recent industrial development and research progress in nanotechnology have led to the release of a number of nanomaterials with particle sizes (1-10 nm) which are categorized as quantum dots (QDs) in aquatic system. Disposal away of such QDs will cause potential pollution to the environment. Therefore, removal of disposed QDs from wastewater represents a challenging research subject for scientists and engineers. Hence, the objective of this study is devoted to assess the process of coagulative removal of silver quantum dots (Ag-QDs), as an example, from water by a novel super magnetic nanocomposite. Such material was aimed to prepare from the chemical combination and reaction of a generated Citrus sinensis and Citrus reticulata peels biochar (SMCsr-B) with spinel cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) as a super-magnetic source. The produced (SMCsr-B) was then crosslinked with polyurea-formaldehyde polymer (PUF) using EDA in only two minutes via microwave irradiation to produce (SMCsr-B/PUF). The SEM, EDX, FT-IR, XRD, and XPS analyses of the assembled (SMCsr-B/PUF) nanocomposite were acquired to confirm surface morphology and chemical structure. Controlling experimental factors were investigated as pH, time, and Ag-QDs pollutant concentration using microwave irradiative removal technique to establish the efficiency of coagulative adsorption of Ag-QDs onto (SMCsr-B/PUF). The solution (pH 5) was proved to exhibit the higher removal percentages of Ag-QDs in 15-25 s. SMCsr-B/PUF nanocomposite exhibited high removal efficiency as 93.12%, 92.39% and 92.48% upon using 20, 40 and 60 mg L^-1 of Ag-QDs, respectively in presence of 10 mM NaCl. The kinetic and equilibrium adsorption data were best fitted to Freundlich model. The prepared SMCsr-B/PUF was successfully utilized as an efficient super magnetic nanocomposite for removal and recovery of Ag-QDs from aqueous environment.
