In-situ synthesis of non-phase-separated boron carbon nitride for photocatalytic reduction of CO2

Adsorption and activation of small molecules on boron nitride catalysts

Hexagonal boron nitride possesses a unique layered structure, high specific surface area and similar electronic properties as graphene, which makes it not only a promising catalyst support, but also a highly effective metal-free catalyst in the booming field of green chemistry. Reactions involving small molecules (e.g., oxygen, low carbon alkanes, nitrogen and carbon dioxide) have always been a hot topic in catalytic research, especially associated with the adsorption and activation regime of different forms of small molecules on catalysts. In this review, we have investigated the adsorption of different small molecules and the relevant activation mechanisms of four typical chemical bonds (OO, C-H, NN, CO) on hexagonal boron nitride. Recent progress on approaches adopted to enhance the activation capacity such as doping, defect engineering and heterostructuring are summarized, highlighting the potential applications of nonmetallic hexagonal boron nitride catalysts in various reactions. This comprehensive investigation offers a reference point for the enhanced mechanistic understanding and future design of effective and sustainable catalytic systems based on boron nitride.

Interfacial engineering of novel inorganic-organic β-Ga2O3/COF heterojunction for accelerated charge transfer towards artificial photosynthesis

Semiconductor-based solar-driven CO₂ to fuels has been widely reckoned as an ingenious approach to tackle energy crisis and climate change simultaneously. However, the high carrier recombination rate of the photocatalyst severely dampens their photocatalytic uses. Herein, an inorganic-organic heterojunction was constructed by in-situ growing a dioxin-linked covalent organic framework (COF) on the surface of rod-shaped β-Ga₂O₃ for solar-driven CO₂ to fuel. This novel heterojunction is featured with an ultra-narrow bandgap COF-318 (absorption edge = 760 nm), which is beneficial for fully utilizing the visible light spectrum, and a wide bandgap β-Ga₂O₃ (absorption edge = 280 nm) to directional conduct electrons from COF to reduce CO₂ without electron-hole recombination occurred. Results showed that the solar to fuels performance over β-Ga₂O₃/COF was much superb than that of COF. The optimized Ga₂O₃/COF achieved an outstanding CO evolution rate of 85.8 μmol h^-1·g^-1 without the need of any sacrificial agent or cocatalyst, which was 15.6 times more efficient than COF. Moreover, the analyses of photoluminescence electrochemical characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the fascinate construction of β-Ga₂O₃/COF heterojunction significantly favored charge separation and the directional transfer of photogenerated electrons from COF to β-Ga₂O₃ followed by CO₂. This study paves the way for developing effective COF-based semiconductor photocatalysts for solar-to-fuel conversion.

Highly Efficient and Selective Carbon-Doped BN Photocatalyst Derived from a Homogeneous Precursor Reconfiguration

The modification of inert boron nitride by carbon doping to make it an efficient photocatalyst has been considered as a promising strategy. Herein, a highly efficient porous BCN (p-BCN) photocatalyst was synthesized via precursor reconfiguration based on the recrystallization of a new homogeneous solution containing melamine diborate and glucose. Two crystal types of the p-BCN were obtained by regulating the recrystallization conditions of the homogeneous solution, which showed high photocatalytic activities and a completely different CO2 reduction selectivity. The CO generation rate and selectivity of the p-BCN-1 were 63.1 μmol·g−1·h−1 and 54.33%; the corresponding values of the p-BCN-2 were 42.6 μmol·g−1·h−1 and 80.86%. The photocatalytic activity of the p-BCN was significantly higher than those of equivalent materials or other noble metals-loaded nanohybrids reported in the literature. It was found that the differences in the interaction sites between the hydroxyl groups in the boric acid and the homolateral hydroxyl groups in the glucose were directly correlated with the structures and properties of the p-BCN photocatalyst. We expect that the developed approach is general and could be extended to incorporate various other raw materials containing hydroxyl groups into the melamine diborate solution and could modulate precursors to obtain porous BN-based materials with excellent performance.
