Binary organic-inorganic nanocomposite of polyaniline-MnO2 for non-enzymatic electrochemical detection of environmental pollutant nitrite

Anchoring CeF3 nanoparticles on porous carbon nanofibers as self-supporting electrodes for highly sensitive detection of nitrite

Designing a working electrode is crucial for the reliable electrochemistry detection, which is applied to detect toxic and harmful substances sensitively and rapidly. Here we report the polytetrafluoroethylene decomposition-assisted electrospinning, a combination method for creating nanopore and synthesizing CeF3, to prepare the self-supporting electrode of CeF3 nanoparticles-anchored on porous carbon nanofibers (CeF3/PCNFs) for highly sensitive nitrite detection. The CeF3/PCNFs exhibits remarkable electroactivity toward nitrite detection, featuring a wide concentration range (0.5 μM-6 mM), low detection limit (10 nm) and high sensitivity (2093 μA mM-1 cm-2). It also exhibits excellent selectivity, stability and reproducibility, and powerful reliability for nitrite detection in saliva, pickles, sausages, chips, river water and tap water. This study provides a facile strategy to prepare the metal fluoride-based self-supporting electrode, which overcomes the disadvantages of chemically modified electrodes unstable and poorly reproducible, and is significant for clinical diagnosis, food safety and environmental monitoring.

3D porous conductive matrix based on phase-transited BSA and covalent coupling-stabilized transition ZnS-CNT for antifouling and on-site detection of nitrite in soil

Nitrite plays a critical role in a variety of nitrification and denitrification processes in the nitrogen cycle. Due to the high surface energy, tendency to aggregate, and poor conductivity, current nitrite ZnS-based sensing platform could not meet the need of on-site nitrite detection in smart agriculture. In order to address these issues, the carboxylated carbon nanotube (CNT) was introduced to reduce the surface energy and prevented aggregation of ZnS, while ZnS-carboxylated CNT (ZnS-CNT) composite also provided excellent electrochemical conductivity. Furthermore, the introduction of phase transition BSA (PTB) created a three-dimensional porous conductive matrix without interfering with the mass transfer process of nitrite. The resulting sensing platform exhibited a linear detection range of 10 nM to 0.4 mM for nitrite, with a detection limit of 0.73 nM. And this sensing platform had the excellent antifouling ability to direct detection nitrite in real soil suspension. In addition, the sensing platform demonstrated remarkable resistance to interferences from pH variations, microbial presence, and organic pollutants that usually present in soil environment. Therefore, on-site detection of nitrite ions in soil environment was realized no needing complex pretreatments.

Ti3C2 Nanosheets Functionalized with Ferritin-Biomimetic Platinum Nanoparticles for Electrochemical Biosensors of Nitrite

Nitrites widely exist in human life and the natural environment, but excessive contents of nitrites will result in adverse effects on the environment and human health; hence, sensitive and stable nitrite detection systems are needed. In this study, we report the synthesis of Ti3C2 nanosheets functionalized with apoferritin (ApoF)-biomimetic platinum (Pt) nanoparticle (Pt@ApoF/Ti3C2) composite materials, which were formed by using ApoF as a template and protein-inspired biomineralization. The formed nanohybrid exhibits excellent electrochemical sensing performance towards nitrite (NaNO2). Specifically, the Pt@ApoF catalyzes the conversion of nitrites into nitrates, converting the chemical signal into an electrical signal. The prepared Pt@ApoF/Ti3C2-based electrochemical NaNO2 biosensors demonstrate a wide detection range of 0.001-9 mM with a low detection limit of 0.425 μM. Additionally, the biosensors possess high selectivity and sensitivity while maintaining a relatively stable electrochemical sensing performance within 7 days, enabling the monitoring of NaNO2 in complex environments. The successful preparation of the Pt@ApoF/Ti3C2 nanohybrid materials provides a new approach for constructing efficient electrochemical biosensors, offering a simple and rapid method for detecting NaNO2 in complex environments.

Electrochemical Impedimetric Platform Based on Con A@MIL-101 for Glycoprotein Detection

An electrochemical impedimetric biosensing platform with lectin as a molecular recognition element has been established for the sensitive detection of glycoproteins, a class of important biomarkers in clinical diagnosis. One of the representative metal-organic framework materials, MIL-101(Cr)-NH2, was utilized as the supporting matrix, and its amino groups served as the anchors to immobilize the lectins of concanavalin A (Con A), constituting Con A@MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 for the determination of invertase (INV) as a model glycoprotein. The Con A concentration, immobilization time, and incubation time with INV were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the degree of impedance increase was linearly proportional to the logarithm of INV concentration between 1.0 × 10-16 and 1.0 × 10-11 M, affording a limit of detection as low as 3.98 × 10-18 M. Good specificity, stability, reproducibility, and repeatability were demonstrated for the fabricated biosensing platform. Moreover, real mouse serum samples were spiked with different concentrations of INV. Excellent recoveries were obtained, which demonstrated the biosensing platform's capability of analyzing glycoproteins within a complex matrix.

Nanozyme-Enhanced Electrochemical Biosensors: Mechanisms and Applications

Nanozymes, as innovative materials, have demonstrated remarkable potential in the field of electrochemical biosensors. This article provides an overview of the mechanisms and extensive practical applications of nanozymes in electrochemical biosensors. First, the definition and characteristics of nanozymes are introduced, emphasizing their significant role in constructing efficient sensors. Subsequently, several common categories of nanozyme materials are delved into, including metal-based, carbon-based, metal-organic framework, and layered double hydroxide nanostructures, discussing their applications in electrochemical biosensors. Regarding their mechanisms, two key roles of nanozymes are particularly focused in electrochemical biosensors: selective enhancement and signal amplification, which crucially support the enhancement of sensor performance. In terms of practical applications, the widespread use of nanozyme-based electrochemical biosensors are showcased in various domains. From detecting biomolecules, pollutants, nucleic acids, proteins, to cells, providing robust means for high-sensitivity detection. Furthermore, insights into the future development of nanozyme-based electrochemical biosensors is provided, encompassing improvements and optimizations of nanozyme materials, innovative sensor design and integration, and the expansion of application fields through interdisciplinary collaboration. In conclusion, this article systematically presents the mechanisms and applications of nanozymes in electrochemical biosensors, offering valuable references and prospects for research and development in this field.

Green Synthesis of Au Magnetic Nanocomposites Using Waste Chestnut Skins and Their Application as a Peroxidase Mimic Nanozyme Electrochemical Sensing Platform for Sodium Nitrite

An electrochemical sensor with high sensitivity for the detection of sodium nitrite was constructed based on the peroxidase-like activity of Au magnetic nanocomposites (Au@Fe3O4). The Au@Fe3O4 composite nanoparticles were green-synthesized via the reduction of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) from waste chestnut skins combined with the sonochemical method. The nanoparticles have both the recoverability of Fe3O4 and the advantage of being able to amplify electrical signals. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of green reduction and sonochemical synthesis provides a functional approach for the preparation of Au@Fe3O4 with significant peroxidase-like activities. The physicochemical properties were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The electrochemical properties of sodium nitrite were determined with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (i-t). The results revealed that Au@Fe3O4 acted as a peroxidase mimic to decompose hydrogen peroxide to produce free radicals, while ·OH was the primary free radical that promoted the oxidation of sodium nitrite. With the optimal detection system, the constructed electrochemical sensor had a high sensitivity for sodium nitrite detection. In addition, the current response had a good linear relationship with the sodium nitrite concentration in the range of 0.01-100 mmol/L. The regression equation of the working curve was y = 1.0752x + 4.4728 (R2 = 0.9949), and the LOD was 0.867 μmol/L (S/N = 3). Meanwhile, the constructed detection system was outstanding in terms of recovery and anti-interference and had a good detection stability of more than 96.59%. The sensor has been successfully applied to a variety of real samples. In view of this, the proposed novel electrochemical analysis method has great prospects for application in the fields of food quality and environmental testing.

The target-induced redox and diazotized reaction for colorimetric ratio detection of nitrite using CoOOH nanosheets as mimetic oxidase

Nitrite is a commonly used food additive and water contaminant that has received widespread attention due to its harmful effects on humans. Here, a colorimetric ratio sensing platform for the detection of nitrite in foods as well as aquatic systems was developed via the catalytic oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by CoOOH nanosheets (CoOOH NSs). Interestingly, in the presence of nitrite, TMB complexes in acidic environments can be oxidized and diazotized to produce yellow oxidized TMB (oxTMB) and diazotized TMB, resulting in the nitrite concentration-dependent ratio variation for the absorbance peaks at 655 and 450 nm (A₆₅₅/A₄₅₀). The colorimetric ratio sensing offers higher sensitivity and better selectivity compared to conventional detection methods because of the specific target-induced reduction-oxidation and diazotized reaction, as well as the excellent mimetic oxidase activity of CoOOH NSs. Based on this strategy, a smartphone-assisted portable approach was designed for the in-situ/visual detection of nitrite, which has good application prospects.
