Comparison of surface adsorption efficacies of eco-sustainable agro/animal biomass-derived activated carbon for the removal of rhodamine B and hexavalent chromium

Effective management and remediation strategies are crucial to minimize the impacts of both organic and inorganic contaminants on environmental quality and human health. This study investigates a novel approach utilizing cotton shell activated carbon (CSAC), rice husk activated carbon (RHAC), and wasp hive activated carbon (WHAC), produced through alkali treatment and carbonization under N2 atmosphere at 600 °C. The adsorption capacities of biomass-derived mesoporous activated carbons (CSAC, RHAC, WHAC) alongside macroporous commercial activated carbons (CAC) were evaluated for removing rhodamine B (Rh B) and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+). The CSAC exhibits remarkable adsorption efficiency (255.4 mg.g-1) for Cr(VI) removal, while RHAC demonstrates superior efficacy (174.2 mg.g-1) for Rh B adsorption. Investigating various optimal parameters including initial pH (pH 3 for Cr and pH 7 for Rh B), catalyst dosage (200 mg.L-1), and initial concentration (20 mg.L-1), the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model is applied to reveal a hybrid adsorption mechanism encompassing monolayer (chemisorption) and multilayer (van der Waals adsorption) processes. Kinetic analysis highlights the pseudo-second-order and Elovich models as the most suitable, suggesting physiochemisorption mechanisms. Thermodynamic analysis indicates the endothermic nature of the adsorption process, with increased randomness at the solid-solution interface. Isosteric heat investigations using Clausius-Clapeyron, Arrhenius, and Eyring equations reveal a heterogeneous surface nature across all activated carbons. Further confirmation of Rh B and Cr(VI) adsorption onto activated carbons is provided through FTIR, FESEM, and EDAX analysis. This study highlights the innovation and promise of utilizing biomass-derived activated carbons for effective pollutant removal.

Integrated AI-driven optimization of Fenton process for the treatment of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole: Insights into mechanistic approach

Antibiotics, as a class of environmental pollutants, pose a significant challenge due to their persistent nature and resistance to easy degradation. This study delves into modeling and optimizing conventional Fenton degradation of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and total organic carbon (TOC) under varying levels of H2O2, Fe2+ concentration, pH, and temperature using statistical and artificial intelligence techniques including Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA), Support Vector Regression (SVR) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). In statistical metrics, the ANN model demonstrated superior predictive accuracy compared to its counterparts, with lowest RMSE values of 0.986 and 1.173 for SMX and TOC removal, respectively. Sensitivity showcased H2O2/Fe2+ ratio, time and pH as pivotal for SMX degradation, while in simultaneous SMX and TOC reduction, fine tuning the time, pH, and temperature was essential. Leveraging a Hybrid Genetic Algorithm-Desirability Optimization approach, the trained ANN model revealed an optimal desirability of 0.941 out of 1000 solutions which yielded a 91.18% SMX degradation and 87.90% TOC removal under following specific conditions: treatment time of 48.5 min, Fe2+: 7.05 mg L-1, H2O2: 128.82 mg L-1, pH: 5.1, initial SMX: 97.6 mg L-1, and a temperature: 29.8 °C. LC/MS analysis reveals multiple intermediates with higher m/z (242, 270 and 288) and lower m/z (98, 108, 156 and 173) values identified, however no aliphatic hydrocarbon was isolated, because of the low mineralization performance of Fenton process. Furthermore, some inorganic fragments like NH4+ and NO3- were also determined in solution. This comprehensive research enriches AI modeling for intricate Fenton-based contaminant degradation, advancing sustainable antibiotic removal strategies.

Recent advances in clay minerals for groundwater pollution control and remediation

Clay minerals are abundant on Earth and have been crucial to the advancement of human civilization. The ability of clay minerals to absorb chemicals is frequently utilized to remove hazardous compounds from aquatic environments. Moreover, clay-based adsorbent products are both environmentally acceptable and affordable. This study provides an overview of advances in clay minerals in the field of groundwater remediation and related predictions. The existing literature was examined using data and information aggregation approaches. Keyword clustering analysis of the relevant literature revealed that clay minerals are associated with groundwater utilization and soil pollution remediation. Principal component analysis was used to assess the relationships among clay mineral modification methods, pollutant properties, and the Langmuir adsorption capacity (Qmax). The results demonstrated that pollutant properties affect the Qmax of pollutants adsorbed by clay minerals. Systematic cluster analysis was utilized to classify the collected data and investigate the relationships. The pollution adsorption mechanism of the unique structure of clay minerals was investigated based on the characterization results. Modified clay minerals exhibited changes in surface functional groups, internal structure, and pHpzc. This review provides a summary of recent clay-based materials and their applications in groundwater remediation, as well as discussions of their challenges and future prospects.

Comparison of Dye Adsorption of Chitosan and Polyethylenimine Modified Bentonite Clays: Optimization, Isotherm, and Kinetic Studies

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of modifying calcium bentonite (Bent-Ca) clay with two cationic polymers, chitosan (Chi) and polyethylenimine (PEI), on the removal of remazol black B (RB-B) dye from an aqueous solution. The samples were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The fractional factorial design of 2(6-1) was applied to investigate the effects of pH, temperature, amount of adsorbent, initial dye concentration, contact time, and shaking rate on the adsorption process. To further optimize RB-B removal from an aqueous solution, a Box-Behnken design with three factors and a response surface methodology was used. The optimum conditions were a pH of 3.77, a temperature of 40.45 °C, and an initial RB-B concentration of 77.27 mg L-1 for Bent-Ca-Chi, whereas for Bent-Ca-PEI, the optimum conditions were a pH of 5.53, a temperature of 41.06 °C, and an initial dye concentration of 238.89 mg L-1. To understand the adsorption behavior, the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were fitted to the experimental data. It was found that the Langmuir isotherm model matched well with the dye adsorption by Bent-Ca-Chi and Bent-Ca-PEI. The kinetics study was performed using three kinetic models: pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models. Among these models, the RB-B dye kinetics were best represented by the pseudo-second-order model equation for the adsorbents.

Adsorption of rare earth elements on a magnetic geopolymer derived from rice husk: studies in batch, column, and application in real phosphogypsum leachate sample

There is a growing need to develop new strategies for rare earth element (REE) recovery from secondary resources. Herein, a novel approach to utilize biogenic silica (from rice husk) and metakaolin was employed to fabricate magnetic geopolymer (MGP) by incorporating metallic iron. The fabricated MGP adsorbent material was used to uptake Ce3+, La3+, and Nd3+ from synthetic solutions and real phosphogypsum leachate in batch and column modes. The MGP offers a negatively charged surface at pH above 2.7, and the uptake of REEs rises from pH 3 to 6. The kinetic study validated that the kinetics was much faster for Nd3+, followed by La3+ and Ce3+. A thermodynamic investigation validated the exothermic nature of the adsorption process for all selected REEs. The desorption experiment using 2 mol L-1 H2SO4 as the eluent demonstrated approximately 100% desorption of REEs from the adsorbent. After six adsorption-desorption cycles, the MGP maintained a high adsorption performance up to cycle five before suffering a significant decrease in performance in cycle six. The effectiveness of MGP was also assessed for its applicability in recovering numerous REEs (La3+, Ce3+, Pr3+, Sm3+, and Nd3+) from real leachate from phosphogypsum wastes, and the highest recovery was achieved for Nd3+ (95.03%) followed by Ce3+ (86.33%). The operation was also feasible in the column presenting suitable values of the length of the mass transfer zone. The findings of this investigation indicate that MGP adsorbent prepared via a simple route has the potential for the recovery of REEs from synthetic and real samples in both batch and continuous operations modes.

Sustainable wastewater purification with crab shell-derived biochar: Advanced machine learning modeling & experimental analysis

Detoxifying ecologically persistent dyes is vital for environmental and human well-being. Herein, crabshell waste is transformed into porous carbon (CB900) through pyrolysis, achieving a remarkable removal rate of 90.5% (CR-RR) and adsorption capacity (∼256.36 mg g-1, qCR). Employing XGBoost modeling, with a robust R2 ∼0.996, proved its superiority over others in predicting CR adsorption. PSO-XGB optimization led to an optimal configuration: 0.051 g adsorbent, 460.56 mg L-1 CR concentration, pH 3.16, and a 94.01 min contact time, resulting in 68.39% CR-RR and 822.15 mg g-1 qCR, simultaneously; sensitivity analysis unveiled the pivotal role of pH and adsorbent dose. CB900 exhibited physical, spontaneous, endothermic following both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Remarkably, CB900 effectively eliminated various contaminants, including chromium and sulfasalazine antibiotic. Pilot-scale CB900 production cost via pyrolysis was $8.5/kg, a fraction of commercial powdered activated carbon, underscoring its economic viability and potential as a sustainable solution for the elimination of toxic contaminants from aqueous environments.

Development and optimization of geopolymer adsorbent for water treatment: Application of mixture design approach

The current paper refers to the study of a new approach to optimizing the adsorptive properties of geopolymers by varying the aluminosilicate precursors from kaolin (K), metakaolin (MK), and coal fly ash (CFA) as internal synthesis factors. The simplex-augmented-centroid mixture design was applied to identify the optimal formulation from the three aluminosilicate precursors to develop a geopolymer (GP) with a distinctive structure that positively affects its dye adsorption efficiency. The variously formulated GP samples were tested for the removal of both methylene blue (MB-dye) and crystal violet dye (CV-dye) from an aqueous solution. The mathematical-statistical analysis of the experimental readings suggested that the generated special cubic models were significant, and thus the chosen approach was adequate for determining the optimum blending proportion. The optimization tools indicated that the optimal mixture from the three aluminosilicate precursors for developing a GP with high adsorption efficiency was 58% MK, 42% K, and 0% CFA. The optimized geopolymer (GP_O) was synthesized and then analyzed using a variety of physicochemical techniques, which revealed the presence of an amorphous N-A-S-H gel-rich porous structure as an influencing property on the geopolymer's organic dye adsorption efficiency. The dependence of the adsorption mechanism of both MB-dye and CV-dye by GP_O on the adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial dye concentration, temperature, and solution pH was evaluated. The isothermic and kinetic experimental readings for MB and CV-dyes adsorption by GP_O were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, with an exothermic, favorable, and spontaneous adsorption reaction thermodynamically. The experimental studies in the lab scale on GP_O produce comparable results. From these results, it has been concluded that the accuracy and feasibility of the mixture design simulation succeeded in optimizing and developing a geopolymeric sorbent material with great potential as an excellent economical agent for removing cationic dyes from aqueous media. This point represents an added value compared to traditional non-optimized geopolymer absorbents. Besides, this geopolymer material represents a significant application possibility for water treatment and remediation of hazardous dye pollutants.

A comprehensive review on sustainable clay-based geopolymers for wastewater treatment: circular economy and future outlook

In the present era of significant industrial development, the presence and dispersal of countless water contaminants in water bodies worldwide have rendered them unsuitable for various forms of life. Recently, the awareness of environmental sustainability for wastewater treatment has increased rapidly in quest of meeting the global water demand. Despite numerous conventional adsorbents on deck, exploring low-cost and efficient adsorbents is interesting. Clays and clays-based geopolymers are intensively used as natural, alternative, and promising adsorbents to meet the goals for combating climate change and providing low carbon, heat, and power. In this narrative work, the present review highlights the persistence of some inorganic/organic water pollutants in aquatic bodies. Moreover, it comprehensively summarizes the advancement in the strategies associated with synthesizing clays and their based geopolymers, characterization techniques, and applications in water treatment. Furthermore, the critical challenges, opportunities, and future prospective regarding the circular economy are additionally outlined. This review expounded on the ongoing research studies for leveraging these eco-friendly materials to address water decontamination. The adsorption mechanisms of clays-based geopolymers are successfully presented. Therefore, the present review is believed to deepen insights into wastewater treatment using clays and clays-based geopolymers as a groundbreaking aspect in accord with the waste-to-wealth concept toward broader sustainable development goals.

Review of Geopolymer Nanocomposites: Novel Materials for Sustainable Development

The demand for geopolymer materials is constantly growing. This, in turn, translates into an increasing number of studies aimed at developing new approaches to the methodology of geopolymer synthesis. The range of potential applications of geopolymers can be increased by improving the properties of the components. Future directions of studies on geopolymer materials aim at developing geopolymers showing excellent mechanical properties but also demonstrating significant improvement in thermal, magnetic, or sorption characteristics. Additionally, the current efforts focus not only on the materials' properties but also on obtaining them as a result of environment-friendly approaches performed in line with circular economy assumptions. Scientists look for smart and economical solutions such that a small amount of the modifier will translate into a significant improvement in functional properties. Thus, special attention is paid to the application of nanomaterials. This article presents selected nanoparticles incorporated into geopolymer matrices, including carbon nanotubes, graphene, nanosilica, and titanium dioxide. The review was prepared employing scientific databases, with particular attention given to studies on geopolymer nanocomposites. The purpose of this review article is to discuss geopolymer nanocomposites in the context of a sustainable development approach. Importantly, the main focus is on the influence of these nanomaterials on the physicochemical properties of geopolymer nanocomposites. Such a combination of geopolymer technology and nanotechnology seems to be promising in terms of preparation of nanocomposites with a variety of potential uses.
