Nanoporous hydrogel absorbent based on salep: Swelling behavior and methyl orange adsorption capacity

Utilizing Silk Sericin as a Biomaterial for Drug Encapsulation in a Hydrogel Matrix with Polycaprolactone: Formulation and Evaluation of Antibacterial Activity

Hydrogels have emerged as a potential tool for enhancing bioavailability and regulating the controlled release of therapeutic agents. Owing to its excellent biocompatibility, silk sericin-based hydrogels have garnered interest in biomedical applications. This study focuses on synthesizing a soft hydrogel by blending silk sericin (SS) and polycaprolactone (PCL) at room temperature. The physicochemical characteristics of the hydrogels have been estimated by different analytical techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The rheological studies demonstrate the non-Newtonian behavior of the hydrogels. Further, the porosity analysis indicates a commendable absorption capacity of the hydrogels. The swelling degree of the hydrogels has been checked in both distilled water and buffer solutions of different pHs (2-10). Moreover, the drug release profile of the hydrogels, using diclofenac sodium (DS) as a model drug, has revealed a substantial release of approximately 67% within the first 130 min with a drug encapsulation efficiency of 60.32%. Moreover, both the empty and the drug-loaded hydrogels have shown antibacterial properties against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with the drug-loaded hydrogels displaying enhanced effectiveness. Additionally, the prepared hydrogels are biodegradable, demonstrating their future prospects in biomedical applications.

Evaluation of the difference in adsorption of amphetamine-type drugs on deep eutectic solvent-functionalized graphene oxide/ZIF-67 composite: Experiment and theoretical calculations

Herein, the capture and separation properties of the deep eutectic solvent-functionalized magnetic graphene oxide/ZIF-67 composite (ZMG-DES) towards amphetamine-type drugs (MDMA, MAM and AM) from water were investigated. Kinetic and isotherm models showed that the adsorption behaviors were monolayer chemisorption. Batch experiment results showed that the maximal adsorption of MDMA (933.652 μg⋅g-1) was 2.3 and 2.8 times higher than that of MAM (412.849 μg⋅g-1) and AM (328.652 μg⋅g-1), respectively, and this superiority remained consistent under varied environmental influences (pH, background ion and humic acid). Theoretical calculations and characterization analyses demonstrated the methylenedioxy group of MDMA led to the highly selective adsorption. Electrostatic potential (ESP) distribution indicated that the methylenedioxy added electron-rich areas and provided more adsorption sites. The Independent Gradient Model (IGMH) quantified the adsorption contribution of the functional groups in each system, which the contribution of the methylenedioxy reached 25.23%, significantly exceeding that of -NH- (18.80%) and benzene ring (20.76%), and proved that the H-bonds formed methylenedioxy enhanced adsorption. Furthermore, the Hirshfeld surface analysis proved that the methylenedioxy and -NH- of MDMA acted as H-bond acceptor and donor, respectively, which synergistically promoted the adsorption. The present study will help us to understand the structure-property relationship between amphetamine-type drugs and ZMG-DES.

Tailored ultra-tough, antimicrobial and recyclable hydrogels based on chitosan and ionic liquid modified montmorillonite with different chain lengths for efficient adsorption of organic dyes in wastewater

Water pollution had exacerbated the global water crisis. Dye effluents posed a serious threat to the environment and human health, so there was an urgent need to develop sustainable methods to mitigate water pollution. In this work, sodium-based montmorillonite (MMT) was stripped using ionic liquids (ILs) with different chain lengths, and a pAAM/pAA/LMA/MMT@ILs-CS hydrogel adsorbent (MICHA) was prepared. The gel-based adsorbent was used to adsorb typical cationic (methylene blue: MB, rhodamine B: RhB) and anionic (methyl orange: MO, indigo carmine: IC) dyes from wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacities of MI16CHA for MB, MO, IC and RhB were 349.6817, 325.415, 316.0142 and 339.8154 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data of MI16CHA for dyes were in accordance with the pseudo-first order and Langmuir isotherm models. The adsorption mechanism of MI16CHA on dyes were based on hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and π-π interaction. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of dyes on MI16CHA was spontaneous and heat-absorbing. The selective experiments demonstrated that MI16CHA has a promising application in real industrial conditions. Cyclic adsorption tests demonstrated the excellent recyclability of MI16CHA. In addition, MI16CHA had excellent antimicrobial and mechanical properties, which endowed the gel adsorbent with anti-pollution and durability.

A novel sinusoidal design for an electrocoagulation reactor followed by an electro-Fenton reaction and a porous ceramic filter for the treatment of polluted waters

In this research work, a novel design of an electro-Fenton reactor for the treatment of polluted water was investigated. In addition to the reactor with iron electrodes, a ceramic filter was also used. An electrical circuit was designed to change the cathodes and anodes every 24 s via an electrical relay between the electrodes. The untreated water was sucked into the reactor with an air pump and entered the electrocoagulation chamber after filtration with a ceramic filter. Then, it flows to the polyethylene filter to separate the coagulated particles from the fresh water. To produce 12 L of clean water, the system consumed 100 W of energy. Analysis of a river sample showed a reduction in nephelometric turbidity units (NTUs), total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Turbidity reduction studies have shown that the system can improve water transparency by 95%, thereby improving water quality to acceptable levels. Further, this system reduced TSS by more than 86%. In addition, BOD was reduced by more than 84% and COD by more than 88%, as shown by the change in the ratio of BOD to COD from 0.44 to 0.625, indicating improved water quality. According to the results, the treatment system can clean polluted waters, particularly during floods and when industries discharge their effluents into rivers.
