An environmentally friendly approach for industrial wastewater treatment and bio-adsorption of heavy metals using Pistacia soft shell (PSS) through flocculation-adsorption process

Recent progress and perspectives of typical renewable bio-based flocculants: characteristics and application in wastewater treatment

The research on bio-based flocculants for waste resource utilization and environmental protection has garnered significant attention. Bio-based flocculants encompass plant-based, animal-based, and microbial variants that are prepared and modified through biological, chemical, and physical methods. These flocculants possess abundant functional groups, unique structures, and distinctive characteristics. This review comprehensively discussed the removal rates of conventional pollutants and emerging pollutants by bio-based flocculants, the interaction between these flocculants and pollutants, their impact on flocculation performance in wastewater treatment, as well as their application cost. Furthermore, it described the common challenges faced by bio-based flocculants in practical applications along with various improvement strategies to address them. With their safety profile, environmental friendliness, efficiency, renewability, and wide availability from diverse sources, bio-based flocculants hold great potential for widespread use in wastewater treatment.

Efficient adsorption of lead and copper from water by modification of sand filter with a green plant-based adsorbent: Adsorption kinetics and regeneration

In this study, pomegranate seed waste (PSW) was added into sand filter (SF) to increase removal efficiency of Lead (Pb(II)) and Copper (Cu(II)) from polluted water. The performance of PSW was compared with activated carbon (AC) as a typical adsorbent. Based on the SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, BET and proximate analyses, PSW had porous structure with specific surface area of 2.76 m2/g and active compounds which suggested PSW as an appropriate adsorbent for heavy metals (HMs) adsorption. According to the batch experiments, SF without treatment could only remove 46% and 35% of Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. These numbers increased to 88% and 75% for Pb(II) and Cu(II) by adding 3 g/kg PSW to the SF, respectively under the optimal conditions of HMs initial concentrations = 100 mg/L, pH = 7 and contact time = 60 min. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm followed the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models, respectively indicating that mainly physisorption was involved in the HMs adsorption process of PSW. Based on the column experiments (flow rate = 62.5 mL/min), the Pb(II) and Cu(II) removal increased from 14% to 60% and 10%-55%, respectively after 5 pore volumes (40 min) by adding 3 g/kg PSW to the SF. Breakthrough curves matched better with Thomas mode rather than Adam's Bohart proving Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Our finding suggested modification of SF with PSW is a promising approach for efficient removal of HMs from water.

Enhanced fluoride removal using montmorillonite clay modified with CoFe2O4 and metal-organic frameworks

The use of modified clays can play an effective role as an effective adsorbent in removing fluoride (Flu) ions from water and aqueous solutions. In the present research, montmorillonite clay (MMt) was modified using CoFe2O4 magnetic particles and Al-Fe fumarate metal-organic framework (Al-Fe Fum) and was utilized as an efficient adsorbent for removing Flu from aqueous solution. The properties of MMt and MMt/CoFe2O4/Al-Fe Fum samples were investigated using different techniques. The results showed that with the modification of MMt using CoFe2O4 magnetic particles and the metal-organic framework of Al-Fe Fum, the BET surface has increased notably from 13.217 to 365.80 m2/g. To investigate the effect of independent variables and their interaction on the efficiency of the Flu adsorption, response surface method-central compound design (RSM-CCD) was served. Based on the results of ANOVA, the F-value and p-value parameters for the desired model were determined to be 783.09 and < 0.0001, respectively, which confirms the success and high ability of the model. The number of R2, adjusted R2, and Predicted R2 for adsorption of Flu ion was determined to be 0.998, 0.997, and 0.995, respectively, which shows that the proposed regression model can describe the process of adsorption and interaction between variables well. Compared to other kinetic models, the pseudo 2nd order kinetic model has a greater ability to describe the Flu adsorption behavior. The R2 parameter value determined that the Freundlich isotherm model has a suitable ability to investigate the isotherm behavior and confirms the effect of heterogeneous surfaces in the process. Generally, the outcomes signified that the MMt and MMt/CoFe2O4/Al-Fe Fum samples can be reused several times in the process of Flu adsorption, while the efficiency is more than 90%.

Simultaneously removal of PAHs from contaminated soil and effluent by integrating soil washing and advanced oxidation processes in a continuous system: Water saving, optimization and scale up modeling

Every year a large amount of clean water turns into contaminated effluent by soil washing (SW) process. The release of this effluent has become a growing environmental threat. In this study, a sustainable approach was developed for effective removal of PAHs from contaminated soil and the effluent by integrating SW and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in a continuous system. In the constructed continuous system, first small amount of clean water passed through the contaminated soil to remove PAHs. Then, the polluted effluent was treated by a quick AOPs and recycled for SW processes again and again until a complete removal of PHE be achieved. The performance of the continuous system was optimized and compared with batch system (no circulation) at lab scale. In addition, a scale up modeling was developed to predict the performance of continuous system at large scale. According to the results, under the optimum conditions: Tween 80 (TW80) = 6 g/L, ultrasonic = 160 kW, UV = 30 W, O3 = 5 g/h and TiO2 = 2 g/m2, the final PHE degradation efficiency of 98 % and 94 % were achieved by the continuous and batch systems after 130 and 185 min, respectively. The continuous system used 5 times less water volume than the batch system but resulted in better PAHs degradation. The scale up modeling revealed at large scale (100 kg soil), the continuous system could decrease the energy consumption and the required washing solution (water + TW80) up to 50 % and 80 %, respectively in comparison to the batch system. This work suggests a promising and practical approach for contaminated soil remediation without producing polluted water.

Insight into the roles of hematite iron oxide nanoparticles on microalgae growth, urban wastewater treatment and bioproducts generation: Gompertz simulation, nutrient mass balance and gene expression

In this study, the effect of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles spiking in urban wastewater (UWW) on growth rate, wastewater treatment ability and bioproducts generation of C. vulgaris and Spirulina was investigated and compared with pure cultivation system. The biomass concentration of C. vulgaris and Spirulina improved by 20 % and 39 % at 10 and 15 mg/L α-Fe2O3, respectively while the both microalgae growth pattern fitted better with Gompertz simulation after treatment with α-Fe2O3. The nutrients mass balance revealed that 1 g of treated C. vulgaris and Spirulina could uptake more COD, TN and TP in comparison to the untreated cells. The lipid generation increased remarkably (C. vulgaris: 45 % and Spirulina: 72 %) after α-Fe2O3 treatment. While, the addition of α-Fe2O3 showed no significant impact on the protein and carbohydrate productivity. Overall, this study evangelize the role of nanoparticles on promoting microalgae applications as a sustainable approach for UWW treatment and promising feedstock for biofuel production.

Design a novel internally illuminated mirror photobioreactor to improve microalgae production through homogeneous light distribution

In this study, a novel internally illuminated mirror photobioreactor (IIM-PBR) was designed to improve microalgae biomass production through providing a homogenous light distribution in cultivation medium. The performance of the IIM-PBR was compared with internally illuminated control photobioreactor (IIC-PBR) and externally illuminated control photobioreactor (EIC-PBR) in terms of cell growth, wastewater treatment and bioproducts generation. Compared with the IIC-PBR and EIC-PBR, the IIM-PBR increased microalgae growth rate up to 60 % and 30%, respectively. Municipal wastewater treatment revealed that the IIM-PBR could significantly improve nutrients removal as the final removal efficiencies of 90%, 95% and 90% were obtained for nitrate, phosphate and COD, respectively. Moreover, the IIM-PBR increased the total bioproducts production by 89% and 46% compared to in the IIC-PBR and EIC-PBR, respectively. Based on the energy consumption calculation, the mirror's light-reflective properties of the IIM-PBR resulted in a significant reduction of total energy consumption (∼10 times).
