Transformation and Degradation of PAH Mixture in Contaminated Sites: Clarifying Their Interactions with Native Soil Organisms

Soil contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), especially caused by the mixture of two or more PAHs, raised great environmental concerns. However, research on the migration and transformation processes of PAHs in soils and their interactions with native communities is limited. In this work, soil samples from uncontaminated sites around the industrial parks in Handan, Hengshui, and Shanghai were artificially supplemented with three concentrations of anthracene (Ant), 9-chloroanthracene (9-ClAnt), benzopyrene (BaP), and chrysene (Chr). Ryegrass was planted to investigate the degradation of PAHs and its interaction with native soil organisms in the constructed ryegrass-microbe-soil microcosmic system. The bacterial and fungal communities in soil were affected by PAHs; their species diversity and relative abundance changed after exposure to different concentrations of PAHs, among which Lysobacter, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Massilia bacteria were correlated to the degradation of PAHs. On the 56th day, the contents of BaP, Chr, and Ant decreased with the degradation process, while the degradation of 9-ClAnt was limited. Nineteen intermediates, including hydroxylation and carboxylated compounds, were identified. The present research would help clarify the potential interactions between PAHs and native organisms in contaminated sites, providing fundamental information for evaluating the transformation risks of PAHs in the natural environment.

Thermo-chemical behaviour of Dunaliella salina biomass and valorising their biochar for naphthalene removal from aqueous rural environment

Thermo-chemical behavior of a microalgal biomass; Dunaliella salina was investigated through thermo-gravimetric analyses. Fully-grown D. salina biomass were subjected for biochar conversion using pyrolytic treatment at three distinct heating rates such as 2.5, 5, and 15 °C min-1. The kinetic appraisals were explained by using model-free kinetics viz., Kissinger-Akahira-Sanose, Flynn-Waal-Ozawa and Starink iso-conversional correlations with concomitant evaluation of activation energies (Ea). The Ea value is 194.2 kJ mol-1 at 90% conversion in FWO model, which is higher as compared to other two models. Moisture, volatile substances, and other biochemical components of the biomass were volatilized between 400 and 1000 K in two separate thermo-chemical breakdown regimes. Microscopic and surface characterization analyses were carried out to elucidate the elemental and morphological characteristics of the biomass and biochar. Further, the proficiency of the prepared biochar was tested for removing naphthalene from the watery media. The novelty of the present study lies in extending the applicability of biochar prepared from D. salina for the removal of a model polyaromatic hydrocarbon, naphthalene.

Enhanced Solubilization and Biodegradation of HMW-PAHs in Water with a Pseudomonas mosselii-Released Biosurfactant

The treatment and reuse of wastewater are crucial for the effective utilization and protection of global water resources. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as one of the most common organic pollutants in industrial wastewater, are difficult to remove due to their relatively low solubility and bioavailability in the water environment. However, biosurfactants with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups are effective in overcoming these difficulties. Therefore, a biosurfactant-producing strain Pseudomonas mosselii MP-6 was isolated in this study to enhance the bioavailability and biodegradation of PAHs, especially high-molecular-weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs). FTIR and LC-MS analysis showed that the MP-6 surfactant belongs to rhamnolipids, a type of biopolymer, which can reduce the water surface tension from 73.20 mN/m to 30.61 mN/m at a critical micelle concentration (CMC = 93.17 mg/L). The enhanced solubilization and biodegradation of PAHs, particularly HMW-PAHs (when MP-6 was introduced), were also demonstrated in experiments. Furthermore, comprehensive environmental stress tolerance tests were conducted to confirm the robustness of the MP-6 biosurfactant, which signifies the potential adaptability and applicability of this biosurfactant in diverse environmental remediation scenarios. The results of this study, therefore, have significant implications for future applications in the treatment of wastewater containing HMW-PAHs, such as coking wastewater.
