Post-synthetic thiol modification of covalent organic frameworks for mercury(II) removal from water

Revealing the interaction forms between Hg(II) and group types (-Cl, -CN, -NH2, -OH, -COOH) in functionalized Poly(pyrrole methane)s for efficient mercury removal

To explore the impact of different functional groups on Hg(II) adsorption, a range of poly(pyrrole methane)s functionalized by -Cl, -CN, -NH2, -OH and -COOH were synthesized and applied to reveal the interaction between different functional groups and mercury ions in water, and the adsorption mechanism was revealed through combined FT-IR, XPS, and DFT calculations. The adsorption performance can be improved to varying degrees by the incorporation of functional groups. Among them, the oxygen-containing functional groups (-OH and -COOH) exhibit stronger affinity for Hg(II) and can increase the adsorption capacity from 180 mg g-1 to more than 1400 mg g-1 at 318 K, with distribution coefficient (Kd) exceeding 105 mL g-1. The variations in the capture and immobilization capabilities of functionalized poly(pyrrole methane)s predominantly stem from the unique interactions between their functional groups and mercury ions. In particular, oxygen-containing -OH and -COOH effectively capture Hg(OH)2 through hydrogen bonding, and further deprotonate to form the -O-Hg-OH and -COO-Hg-OH complexes which are more stable than those obtained from other functionalized groups. Finally, the ecological safety has been fully demonstrated through bactericidal and bacteriostatic experiments to prove the functionalized poly(pyrrole methane)s can be as an environmentally friendly adsorbent for purifying contaminated water.

Thiol-Ene Click Reaction Modified Triazinyl-Based Covalent Organic Framework for Pb(II) Ion Effective Removal

As a common water pollutant, Pb2+ has harmful effects on the nervous, hematopoietic, digestive, renal, cardiovascular, and endocrine systems. Due to the drawbacks of traditional adsorbents such as structural disorder, poor stability, and difficulty in introducing adsorption active sites, the adsorption capacity is low, and it is difficult to accurately study the adsorption mechanism. Herein, vinyl-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were synthesized at room temperature, and sulfur-containing active groups were introduced by the click reaction. By precisely tuning the chemical structure of the sulfur-containing reactive groups through the click reaction, we found that the adsorption activity of the sulfhydryl group was higher than that of the sulfur atom in the thioether. Moreover, the incorporation of flexible linking groups was observed to enhance the adsorption activity at the active site. The maximum adsorption capacity of the postmodified COF TAVA-S-Et-SH for Pb(II) reached 303.0 mg/g, which is 2.9 times higher than that of the unmodified COF. This work not only demonstrates the remarkable potential of the "thiol-ene" click reaction for the customization of active adsorption sites but also demonstrates the remarkable potential of the "thiol-alkene" click reaction to explore the structure-effect relationship between the active adsorption sites and the metal ion adsorption capacity.

Post-synthetic modifications of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for diverse applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous and crystalline organic polymers, which have found usage in various fields. These frameworks are tailorable through the introduction of diverse functionalities into the platform. Indeed, functionality plays a key role in their different applications. However, sometimes functional groups are not compatible with reaction conditions or can compete and interfere with other groups of monomers in the direct synthetic method. Also, pre-synthesis of bulky moieties in COFs can negatively affect crystal formation. To avoid these problems a post-synthetic modification (PSM) approach is a helpful tactic. Also, with the assistance of this strategy porous size can be tunable and stability can be improved without considerable effect on the crystallite. In addition, conductivity, hydrophobicity/ hydrophilicity, and chirality are among the features that can be reformed with this method. In this review, different types of PSM strategies based on recent articles have been divided into four categories: (i) post-functionalization, (ii) post-metalation, (iii) chemical locking, and (iv) host-guest post-modifications. Post-functionalization and chemical locking methods are based on covalent bond formation while in post-metalation and host-guest post-modifications, non-covalent bonds are formed. Also, the potential of these post-modified COFs in energy storage and conversion (lithium-sulfur batteries, hydrogen storage, proton-exchange membrane fuel cells, and water splitting), heterogeneous catalysts, food safety evaluation, gas separation, environmental domains (greenhouse gas capture, radioactive element uptake, and water remediation), and biological applications (drug delivery, biosensors, biomarker capture, chiral column chromatography, and solid-state smart nanochannels) have been discussed.

One-step synthesis of a benzothiadiazole-based nonbranching functionalized covalent organic framework and its application in efficient removal of Hg2

In recent years, a variety of adsorbents have been developed for Hg2+ removal. However, these adsorbents are unsatisfactory for adsorption due to narrow and irregular pore channels or poor adsorption capacity and low stability. Therefore, it is worth exploring a porous Hg2+ adsorbent material with high adsorption performance and stability. In this study, a benzothiadiazole-based nonbranching functionalized covalent organic framework (COF) material (TPS-COF) by one-step synthesis was reported, which exhibited a high specific surface area of 1564 m2 g-1, high crystallinity and stability attributed to its high conjugated linkage structure of benzothiadiazole. In addition, due to the rich S and N elements of the benzothiadiazole unit, it exhibited excellent adsorption performance on Hg2+, including excellent adsorption amount (1040 mg g-1), high initial adsorption rate (448 mg g-1 min-1) and very short adsorption equilibrium time (10 min), with an efficient removal rate of Hg2+ in the pH range of 2-8. After desorption, the TPS-COF still retained good pore stability, adsorption capacity, and reusability. Such a one-step synthetic unbranched functionalization strategy provides further insights to achieve a good balance between the high crystallinity, functionality and stability of COFs.
