Feature evaluation of accelerometry signals for cough detection

Cough is a common symptom of multiple respiratory diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. Various research works targeted cough detection as a means for continuous monitoring of these respiratory health conditions. This has been mainly achieved using sophisticated machine learning or deep learning algorithms fed with audio recordings. In this work, we explore the use of an alternative detection method, since audio can generate privacy and security concerns related to the use of always-on microphones. This study proposes the use of a non-contact tri-axial accelerometer for motion detection to differentiate between cough and non-cough events/movements. A total of 43 time-domain features were extracted from the acquired tri-axial accelerometry signals. These features were evaluated and ranked for their importance using six methods with adjustable conditions, resulting in a total of 11 feature rankings. The ranking methods included model-based feature importance algorithms, first principal component, leave-one-out, permutation, and recursive features elimination (RFE). The ranking results were further used in the feature selection of the top 10, 20, and 30 for use in cough detection. A total of 68 classification models using a simple logistic regression classifier are reported, using two approaches for data splitting: subject-record-split and leave-one-subject-out (LOSO). The best-performing model out of the 34 using subject-record-split obtained an accuracy of 92.20%, sensitivity of 90.87%, specificity of 93.52%, and F1 score of 92.09% using only 20 features selected by the RFE method. The best-performing model out of the 34 using LOSO obtained an accuracy of 89.57%, sensitivity of 85.71%, specificity of 93.43%, and F1 score of 88.72% using only 10 features selected by the RFE method. These results demonstrate the ability for future implementation of a motion-based wearable cough detector.

Robust Cough Detection With Out-of-Distribution Detection

Cough is an important defense mechanism of the respiratory system and is also a symptom of lung diseases, such as asthma. Acoustic cough detection collected by portable recording devices is a convenient way totrack potential condition worsening for patients who have asthma. However, the data used in building current cough detection models are often clean, containing a limited set of sound categories, and thus perform poorly when they are exposed to a variety of real-world sounds which could be picked up by portable recording devices. The sounds that are not learned by the model are referred to as Out-of-Distribution (OOD) data. In this work, we propose two robust cough detection methods combined with an OOD detection module, that removes OOD data without sacrificing the cough detection performance of the original system. These methods include adding a learning confidence parameter and maximizing entropy loss. Our experiments show that 1) the OOD system can produce dependable In-Distribution (ID) and OOD results at a sampling rate above 750 Hz; 2) the OOD sample detection tends to perform better for larger audio window sizes; 3) the model's overall accuracy and precision get better as the proportion of OOD samples increase in the acoustic signals; 4) a higher percentage of OOD data is needed to realize performance gains at lower sampling rates. The incorporation of OOD detection techniques improves cough detection performance by a significant margin and provides a valuable solution to real-world acoustic cough detection problems.

Artificial Intelligence for Automatic Monitoring of Respiratory Health Conditions in Smart Swine Farming

Porcine respiratory disease complex is an economically important disease in the swine industry. Early detection of the disease is crucial for immediate response to the disease at the farm level to prevent and minimize the potential damage that it may cause. In this paper, recent studies on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the early detection and monitoring of respiratory disease in swine have been reviewed. Most of the studies used coughing sounds as a feature of respiratory disease. The performance of different models and the methodologies used for cough recognition using AI were reviewed and compared. An AI technology available in the market was also reviewed. The device uses audio technology that can monitor and evaluate the herd's respiratory health status through cough-sound recognition and quantification. The device also has temperature and humidity sensors to monitor environmental conditions. It has an alarm system based on variations in coughing patterns and abrupt temperature changes. However, some limitations of the existing technology were identified. Substantial effort must be exerted to surmount the limitations to have a smarter AI technology for monitoring respiratory health status in swine.
