Abstract
In this work, we introduced a simple aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) sensor (PHCS) which can selectively detect and discriminate three environmentally and biologically imperative heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Co2+ and Hg2+) and a hazard class 1 categorized nitro-explosive picric acid (PA) in differential media. By virtue of its weak fluorescence attributes in pure organic medium owing to the synergistic operation of multiple photophysical quenching mechanisms, the molecular probe showcased highly selective 'TURN ON' fluorogenic response towards hazardous Hg2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 97 nM. Comprehensive investigation of binding mechanism throws light on the cumulative effect of probe-metal complexation induced chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect and subsequent AIEE activation within the formed probe-metal adducts. Noteworthily, the probe (PHCS) can be readily used in real water samples for the quantitative determination of Hg2+ in a wide concentration range. In addition, the probe displayed modest colorimetric recognition performances to selectively detect and discriminate two essential heavy metal ions (Cu2+ and Co2+) with a LOD of 96 nM and 65 nM for Cu2+ and Co2+ respectively, in semi-aqueous medium. Intriguingly, based on high photoluminescence efficiency, the AIEE active nano-aggregated PHCS displayed a remarkable propensity to be used as a selective and ultra-sensitive 'TURN-OFF' fluorogenic chemosensor towards PA with LOD of 34.4 ppb in aqueous medium. Finally, we specifically shed light on the interaction of PHCS hydrosol towards PA using some unprecedented techniques, which helped uncover new photophysical insights of probe-explosive molecule interaction.

Abstract
Exposure to low concentrations of heavy metal cations seriously harms living organisms, hence they are considered environmental toxins. Portable simple detection systems are required for field monitoring of multiple metal ions. In this report, paper-based chemosensors (PBCs) were prepared by adsorbing 1-(pyridin-2-yl diazenyl) naphthalen-2-ol (chromophore), which recognizes heavy metals, onto filter papers coated with mesoporous silica nano spheres (MSNs). The high density of the chromophore probe on the surface of PBCs resulted in ultra-sensitive optical detection of heavy metal ions and short response time. The concentration of metal ions was determined using digital image-based colorimetric analysis (DICA) and compared to spectrophotometry under optimal sensing conditions. The PBCs exhibited stability and short recovery times. The detection limits determined using DICA of Cd2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Fe3+ were 0.22, 0.28, 0.44, and 0.54 μM; respectively. Additionally, the linear ranges for monitoring Cd2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Fe3+ were 0.44-4.4, 0.16-4.2, 0.8-8.5, and 0.002-5.2 μM; respectively. The developed chemosensors showed high stability, selectivity, and sensitivity for sensing of Cd2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Fe3+ in water under optimum conditions and hold potential for low cost, onsite sensing of toxic metals in water.

Abstract
Cobalt is an essential micronutrient for human beings. The excessive intake of cobalt may lead to heart-related diseases. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe 1,1'-(((6,11,11-trimethyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-6,9-methanopyridazino[4,5-b]quinoxaline-1,4-diyl)bis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(naphthalen-2-ol) (PDS) was synthesized from camphor. The probe PDS could be utilized to selectively recognize Co2+ over other metal ions. There is a good linear relationship between fluorescence intensity of PDS and Co2+ concentration within 0-20 μM, and its detection limt was found to be 0.925 μM, which is far lower than the national standard for cobalt in drinking water in China. The possible coordination mechanism of PDS with Co2+ was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and density functional theory (DFT). The probe PDS was also successfully applied in detection of Co2+ in tap water and fresh vegetables.

Abstract
In this work, we designed a novel Schiff-base probe from the condensation reaction of 3,5-diiodosalicylaldehyde with isoniazid. Treatment of the sensor molecule with different metal ions like K+, Ba2+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Hg2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Al3+ in visual inspection and absorption measurements explained its colorimetric sensing ability. The sensor DISN displays a remarkable color variation from pale yellow to brownish-orange towards Co2+ ion. The absorption and emission spectra of DISN, upon treating with various anions including F-, Br-, Cl-, I-, HSO4-, NO3-, H2PO4-, and CN- were tested. The addition of the fluoride ion to the receptor caused not only the intense color variation from pale yellow to orange but also a significant fluorescence turn-on response. Job's plot method fixed the binding of Co2+ and F- to DISN separately, in 2:1 and 1:1 binding stoichiometry, respectively. The detection limit of 1.24 × 10-7 M and 0.108 × 10-6 M was attained for Co2+ and F-, respectively. The TD-DFT calculations further supported the photophysical properties involved in the free probe and its complexes. The YES and INHIBIT logic function was found to operate from modulation in the absorbance and fluorescence behavior of Co2+ and F- ions with DISN. Furthermore, DISN displays its practical applicability in filter-paper strips, live cell imaging, and real sample analyses.

Abstract
A simple, rapid, and convenient colorimetric chemosensor of a specific target toward the end user is still required for on-site detection and real-time monitoring applications. In this study, we developed a rapid in situ colorimetric assay for cobalt detection using the naked eye. Interestingly, a yellow to light orange visual color transition was observed within 3 s when a Chrysoidine G (CG) chemosensor was exposed to cobalt. Surprisingly, the CG chemosensor had great selectivity toward cobalt without any interference of other metal ions. Under optimized conditions, a lower detection limit of 0.1 ppm via a spectrophotometer and a visual detection limit of 2 ppm with a linear range from 0.4 to 1 ppm (R2 = 0.97) were determined. Moreover, the CG chemosensor is reversible and maintains its functionality after treatment with chelating agents. In conclusion, we show the superior capabilities of the CG chemosensor, which has the potential to provide extremely facile handling, high sensitivity, and a fast response time for applications of on-site detection to real-time cobalt monitoring for the general public.

A simple and novel method for the colorimetric detection of Co(2+) was developed based on controlling the oxidation level of methylene blue (MB). After a complex was formed between MB, 2-aminothiophenol (ATP) and copper nitrate (MB-ATP-Cu(2+)), the sensing of Co(2+) showed high selectivity. The mechanism of sensing has also been discussed.

Abstract
An excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism based two reactive probes HBTCo and HBTCu is reported for the selective detection of Co(2+) and Cu(+) respectively in a reducing aqueous environment. Co(2+) and Cu(+) mediated oxidative benzylic ether (C-O) bond cleavage offers ratiometric detection of these metal ions.

Abstract
A new highly selective colorimetric chemosensor for Co(2+) was developed based on coumarin-conjugated thiocarbanohydrazone. The ligand senses Co(2+) in solution by changing its color from light yellow to deep pink. The sensor has been used in the development of practically viable colorimetric kits and as a staining agent for Co(2+) in microorganisms.
