Concentrations of arsenic, cadmium and lead in human hair and typical foods in eleven Chinese cities

Assessing the Impact of PM2.5-Bound Arsenic on Cardiovascular Risk among Workers in a Non-ferrous Metal Smelting Area: Insights from Chemical Speciation and Bioavailability

Inhalation of fine particulate matter PM2.5-bound arsenic (PM2.5-As) may cause significant cardiovascular damage, due to its high concentration, long transmission range, and good absorption efficiency in organisms. However, both the contribution and the effect of the arsenic exposure pathway, with PM2.5 as the medium, on cardiovascular system damage in nonferrous smelting sites remain to be studied. In this work, a one-year site sample collection and analysis work showed that the annual concentration of PM2.5-As reached 0.74 μg/m3, which was 120 times the national standard. The predominant species in the PM2.5 samples were As (V) and As (III). A panel study among workers revealed that PM2.5-As exposure dominantly contributed to human absorption of As. After exposure of mice to PM2.5-As for 8 weeks, the accumulation of As in the high exposure group reached equilibrium, and its bioavailability was 24.5%. A series of animal experiments revealed that PM2.5-As exposure induced cardiac injury and dysfunction at the environmental relevant concentration and speciation. By integrating environmental and animal exposure assessments, more accurate health risk assessment models exposed to PM2.5-As were established for metal smelting areas. Therefore, our research provides an important scientific basis for relevant departments to formulate industry supervision, prevention and control policies.

Human biomonitoring of heavy metals exposure in different age- and gender-groups based on fish consumption patterns in typical coastal cities of China

The study aimed to investigate heavy metals (HMs) concentrations in human hair based on fish consumption patterns in Qingdao, Xiamen, and Zhoushan. The (HMs) concentrations were determined using acid digestion and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS, NexION 300X, PerkinElmer). The associated health risks were investigated using risk assessment models described by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The order of fish HMs concentration in Qingdao was CdCrCu>Pb>Cr>As>Cd in all three study areas. The hair Zn concentration in 28 % of the studied population exceeded the safety standards. Overall, the hair HMs concentration was found to be high in middle-aged groups (19-45 and 45-59), and the hair HMs concentrations were high, especially in the case of females. A significant correlation was noticed between hair As (0.119; p < 0.05), Cr (0.231; p < 0.05),) and Cu (0.117; p < 0.05),) and fish consumption frequency. High Odd ratios (>2) were noticed for As, Cu and Zn in high fish-eating frequency. A significant non-carcinogenic risk was noticed in human Cr exposure (1.10E+00) in Xiamen, and the hazard index values indicated non-carcinogenic risk in Xiamen and Zhoushan. The carcinogenic risk for human As exposure (2.50E-05-7.09E-03) indicated a significant cancer risk.

Potentially toxic elements in human scalp hair around China's largest polymetallic rare earth ore mining and smelting area

There is a growing concern about human health of residents living in areas where mining and smelting occur. In order to understand the exposure to the potentially toxic elements (PTEs), we here identify and examine the cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in scalp hair of residents living in the mining area (Bayan Obo, n = 76), smelting area (Baotou, n = 57) and a reference area (Hohhot, n = 61). In total, 194 hair samples were collected from the volunteers (men = 87, women = 107) aged 5-77 years old in the three areas. Comparing median PTEs levels between the young and adults, Ni levels were significantly higher in adults living in the smelting area while Cr was highest in adults from the mining area, no significant difference was found for any of the elements in the reference area. From the linear regression model, no significant relationship between PTEs concentration, log₁₀(PTEs), and age was found. The concentrations of Ni, Cd, and Pb in hair were significantly lower in the reference area when compared to both mining and smelting areas. In addition, Cu was significantly higher in the mining area when compared to the smelting area. Factor analysis (FA) indicated that men and women from the smelting area (Baotou) and mining area (Bayan Obo), respectively, had different underlying communality of log10(PTEs), suggesting different sources of these PTEs. Multiple factor analysis quantilized the importance of gender and location when combined with PTEs levels in human hair. The results of this study indicate that people living in mining and/or smelting areas have significantly higher PTEs (Cu, Ni, Cd, and Pb) hair levels compared to reference areas, which may cause adverse health effects. Remediation should therefore be implemented to improve the health of local residents in the mining and smelting areas.

Relationship Between Gymnastic Rhythmic Practice and Body Composition, Physical Performance, and Trace Element Status in Young Girls

This study evaluates the influence on body development of doing rhythmic gymnastics in girls from 10 to 17 years of age, the results of certain strength and flexibility abilities, and the trace element status (Ca, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr, and Ni). The subjects were divided into three groups: (a) girls who practiced rhythmic gymnastics at a competition level (competition group); (b) girls who practiced this sport at a non-competitive level (training group); and (c) girls who do not practice any sport and with a low level of physical activity (control or sedentary group). Trace element status was determined in hair and urine samples. Results showed that doing rhythmic gymnastics does not alter the normal physical development of muscle mass, and even leads to a decrease in body fat content. Furthermore, better scores in the strength and flexibility test were obtained by the participants of this sports discipline. Statistically significant differences in urine Fe, Cu, and Mn values (p < 0.05) and in hair Cr, Cu, and Mn values (p < 0.05) were found between the two rhythmic gymnastics groups and the control group, and were higher in the competition and training groups. A principal component analysis model was performed to evaluate the possibility of cluster formation among the girls. The PCA results revealed a separation between the different groups although the separation was not perfect. PLS-DA was attempted in order to verify whether it was possible to discriminate between the groups included in this study. It was clear that the competition and control ones were very well classified (around 95% of correct predictions) but 20% of the girls belonging to the training group were misclassified as belonging to the competition one.

Cadmium and Lead Pollution Characteristics of Soils, Vegetables and Human Hair Around an Open-cast Lead-zinc Mine

Atmospheric deposition of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) was investigated together with the accumulation, distribution and health risks from potentially toxic metals in soils, vegetables and human hair at a mining area in southwest China. Annual atmospheric deposition of Cd and Pb were 41.1 and 192 g ha^- 1, respectively, and consisted mainly of dry deposition. Agricultural soils experienced high levels of metal pollution around the mine, with 66.4% and 57.3 % of vegetable samples grown on these polluted fields exceeding maximum permissible Cd and Pb concentrations, particularly the leafy vegetables. Residents living near the mining area had high Cd (0.75 mg kg^- 1) and Pb (6.87 mg kg^- 1) concentrations in their hair, and the maximum values occurred in occupationally exposed individuals. Long-term mining activities have resulted in high health risks to the local population due to Cd and Pb deposition and accumulation from the atmosphere, soils and vegetables.

Associations between endocrine-disrupting heavy metals in maternal hair and gestational diabetes mellitus: A nested case-control study in China

BACKGROUND

Exposure to environmental endocrine disruptors (EDCs) may lead to abnormal glucose metabolism and, potentially, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

OBJECTIVE

We investigated the association between five endocrine-disrupting heavy metals (EDHMs), i.e., arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and tin (Sn), in maternal hair and the risk of GDM.

METHODS

We conducted a nested case-control study including 335 GDM cases and 343 controls without GDM based on a prospective birth cohort established in Beijing, China. Concentrations of EDHMs were analyzed in maternal hair. Log-binomial regression and multiple linear regression were used to estimate the associations between the hair concentrations of single metals and the risk of GDM, while weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression for their mixed effects.

RESULTS

The median concentrations of Hg (0.442 vs. 0.403 μg/g) and Sn (0.171 vs. 0.140 μg/g) in the case group were significantly higher than those in the control group. No differences were found between the two groups for the other three metals. After adjusting for confounders, the prevalence ratio (PR; highest vs. lowest tertile) of GDM risk for Hg was 1.27 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05-1.54), while that for Sn was 1.26 (95% CI: 1.04-1.53). Among women with a body mass index < 24 kg/m², the PR (highest vs. lowest tertile) of GDM for Sn was 1.38 (95% CI: 1.09-1.75). The effect of exposure to the five EDHMs on the risk of GDM was estimated by WQS regression: Sn and Hg made the largest contributions to the WQS index (40.9% and 40.3%, respectively).

CONCLUSION

High maternal levels of EDHMs, particularly Sn and Hg, may promote the development of GDM.

Exposure of the residents around the Three Gorges Reservoir, China to chromium, lead and arsenic and their health risk via food consumption

Hydrological management of the Three Gorges Dam has resulted in the interception of heavy metals in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). However, the exposure to heavy metals and health risks among local residents remained poorly understood. Here we collected 208 biomarker samples (hair) and 20 food species from typical regions in the TGR to assess the exposure levels of three toxic metals (Cr, Pb and As) in residents of the TGR, and subsequently investigated their health risk via dietary intake. Results indicated that hair Cr and As levels were below the reference value for normal people and threshold of skin lesions, respectively, whereas about 22% hair Pb exceeded the reference for clinical medicine, indicating a potential Pb exposure of local residents. Smoking habit and fish consumption were found to be predictors for hair Pb. In addition, the concentrations of heavy metals in all investigated food samples were below the limits of contaminants in food in China, except for Pb in the sweet potato and fish. The estimated daily intake of metals (DIMs) revealed that the intakes of Cr and As from studied food were under the recommended thresholds of Cr and As. However, the intake of Pb via diet exceeded the limit of the prevalence of chronic kidney disease and closed to the threshold for cardiovascular, which was probably associated with the high Pb concentrations of fish and sweet potato. Overall, residents around the TGR were at low exposure to Cr and As, but Pb exposure may need more attention.

Toxic element levels in ingredients and commercial pet foods

Nowadays, there is a growing concern about contamination of toxic metals (TM) in pet food due to the great potential for health risks of these elements. TM concentrations in commercial pet foods (n = 100) as well as in ingredients used in their composition (n = 100) were analyzed and compared to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) maximum tolerable level (MTL), and the TM concentrations found in the different sources of carbohydrate, protein, and fat were compared. The TM concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma with optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Concentrations above the MTL for aluminum, mercury, lead, uranium, and vanadium were observed in both dog and cat foods, and the percentage of dog foods that exceeded the MTL of these TM were: 31.9%; 100%; 80.55%; 95.83%; and 75%, respectively, and in cat foods: 10.71%; 100%; 32.14%; 85.71%; 28.57%, respectively. The MTL values of these TMs and the mean values in dog foods (mg/kg dry matter basis) (MTL [mean ± standard deviation]) were: aluminum: 200 (269.17 ± 393.74); mercury: 0.27 (2.51 ± 1.31); lead: 10 (12.55 ± 4.30); uranium: 10 (76.82 ± 28.09); vanadium: 1 (1.35 ± 0.69), while in cat foods were: aluminum: 200 (135.51 ± 143.95); mercury: 0.27 (3.47 ± 4.31); lead: 10 (9.13 ± 5.42); uranium: 10 (49.83 ± 29.18); vanadium: 1 (0.81 ± 0.77). Dry foods presented higher concentrations of most TM (P < 0.05) than wet foods (P < 0.05). Among the carbohydrate sources, there were the highest levels of all TM except cobalt, mercury, and nickel in wheat bran (P < 0.05), while among the protein sources, in general, animal by-products had higher TM concentrations than plant-based ingredients. Pork fat had higher concentrations of arsenic, mercury, and antimony than fish oil and poultry fat. It was concluded that the pet foods evaluated in this study presented high concentrations of the following TM: aluminum, mercury, lead, uranium, and vanadium.

Influence of Biometric and Seasonal Parameters on the Metal Content of Scomber colias in Northwestern African Waters

Studies of the content of heavy metals and trace elements in fish and other marine organisms are of great importance to know the state of the marine ecosystem. This study has been carried out in northwestern African waters, Scomber colias being the target species, sampling a total of 345 specimens over 2 years. For the determination of metals and trace elements (Al, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) in the muscle, the ICP-OES (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry) was used. In the statistical study, the factors (oceanographic and maturity in the seasons, size of the specimens) were used. The samples sampled in the cold season that had high concentrations of metals may be due to the influence that African upwelling has on the Canary Islands. The metallic contents of our samples are lower than those found in the studies in Mauritania and Morocco due to the greater influence that upwelling has in these areas.

Boosting sensitive and selective detection toward Pb(II) via activation effect of Co and orbital coupling between Pb and O over Co@Co3O4 nanocatalyst

Fruitful achievements on electrochemical detection toward Pb(II) have been achieved, and their good performance is generally attributed to the adsorption property of nanomaterials. However, the design of sensing interfaces from the electronic structure and electron transfer process is limited. Here, Co@Co₃O₄ acquired an ultra-high detection sensitivity of 103.11 µA µM^-1 toward Pb(II), outperforming the results previously reported. The interfacial oxygen atoms build an electron bridge for Co activating Co₃O₄. Particularly, new energy levels of oxygen atoms were generated and matched with that of Pb(II). The strong orbital coupling effect between O and Pb makes the Co@Co₃O₄ sensitive and selective toward Pb(II). Compared with Co metal and Co₃O₄, Pb(II) got more electrons from Co@Co₃O₄, and longer Pb-O bonds were formed, allowing more Pb(II) to be catalyzed and reduced. Also, the superior stability and reproducibility of electrochemical detection make electrodes practicably. This work reveals that metals can stimulate intrinsically catalytic activity of their metal oxides, with the generation of orbit energy levels that match to a specific analyte. It provides a promising strategy for constructing sensitive and selective sensing interfaces toward ultra-low concentration analyte in body fluid and other complex samples.

Levels, Spatial Distribution, and Impact Factors of Heavy Metals in the Hair of Metropolitan Residents in China and Human Health Implications

Chronic exposure to low levels of heavy metals threatens human health. However, few studies evaluated the health effects and spatial distributions of chronic exposure to heavy metals in metropolitan residents throughout mainland China using unified sampling methods and evaluation indicators at the national level. Here, the concentrations and spatial distributions of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Sb, Pb, and Hg) in the hair of 1202 metropolitan residents from mainland China were analyzed, and differences in age and sex were evaluated. Most target metals exhibited higher concentrations in the hair of residents from South Central China. Generally, male hair had higher As and Se concentrations, whereas female hair had higher Cd and Pb levels (p < 0.05). A significant pairwise correlation existed between most metals in hair, especially Cd-Pb (r = 0.638, p < 0.05). The Se/heavy metal molar ratio is used as an indicator to assess the detoxification ability. The results demonstrated that protecting metropolitan residents in South Central China from heavy metals in their daily life is crucial, particularly for Hg, Pb, and Cr with Se/(Hg, Pb, or Cr) molar ratios < 1. This is the first study to comprehensively consider the antagonistic effects of Se and heavy metals using the molar ratio of Se/heavy metals to evaluate health implications and propose health management policies for metropolitan residents in China.

Seasonal and ontogenic variations of metal content in the European pilchard (Sardina pilchardus) in northwestern African waters

Marine fishes are exposed to great human-induced alterations due to the indiscriminate discharges into the sea, increasing marine pollution. For this study, 324 specimens of Sardina pilchardus from the Canary Islands were analized during a period of 2 years (June 2016 to May 2018). The concentration of 11 metals and trace elements (Al, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) was determined in each individual using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) technique. Statistical analyses were carried out considering the following factors: oceanographic season, maturity of the gonads in the seasons, size of the specimens. Sardina pilchardus specimens captured in the hot season presented higher Ni, Li and Pb levels than the specimens caught in the cold season. Immature specimens had higher concentration in more metals than the mature specimens. This fact may be due to the fact that these specimens require a much higher metabolic rate due to their growth and do not detoxify like mature specimens. Significant differences were found in the concentration of metals in all the analyzes performed.

Dietary exposure to arsenic and human health risks in western Tibet

The health effects of drinking water exposure to inorganic arsenic are well known but are less well defined for dietary exposure. The rising concerns of arsenic risks from diet motivated this study of arsenic concentrations in highland barley, vegetables, meat, and dairy products to evaluate arsenic exposure source and to assess health risks among rural residents of Ngari area, western Tibet. Total arsenic and arsenic speciation were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography combined with ICP-MS (HPLC-ICP-MS) respectively. Average total arsenic concentrations of 0.18 ± 0.21 (n = 45, median: 0.07 mg·kg^-1), 0.40 ± 0.57 (n = 17, median: 0.15 mg·kg^-1), 0.21 ± 0.16 (n = 12, median: 0.17 mg·kg^-1), and 0.18 ± 0.08 (n = 11, median: 0.22 mg·kg^-1) were observed in highland barley, vegetables, meat, and dairy products, respectively. Inorganic arsenic was determined to be the main species of arsenic in highland barley, accounting for about 64.4 to 99.3% (average 83.3%) of total arsenic. Nearly half (44.4%) of the local residents had ingested >3.0 × 10^-4 mg·kg^-1·d^-1 daily dose of arsenic from highland barley alone, above the maximum oral reference dose recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The inorganic arsenic daily intake from highland barley was 3.6 × 10^-4 mg·kg^-1·d^-1. Dietary exposure to inorganic arsenic alone increased the cancer risk probability to 5.4 in 10,000, assuming that the inorganic arsenic in highland barley has the same carcinogenic effects as that in water.

Ontogenic and seasonal variations of metal content in a small pelagic fish (Trachurus picturatus) in northwestern African waters

Marine organisms are exposed to great changes induced by human beings due, among others, to discharges into the oceans, increasing marine pollution. For this study, 294 specimens of Trachurus picturatus from the Canary Islands were analyzed during a period of 2 years. The concentration of 11 anthropic metals and trace elements was determined in each individual using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) technique. Statistical analyses were carried out considering the following factors: oceanographic season, maturity of the gonads, size of the specimens, season. Immature specimens had higher concentration in more metals than the mature specimens. This fact may be due to the fact that these specimens require a much higher metabolic rate due to their growth and do not detoxify like mature specimens.

Environmental and human health risks from cadmium exposure near an active lead-zinc mine and a copper smelter, China

Cadmium (Cd) contamination from mining and smelting operations has led to growing environmental health concerns. In this study, soil, surface water, drinking water, rice, vegetables, and biomarkers (hair and urine) were collected from local residents near an active lead-zinc mine and a copper smelter. The aim was to determine how nonferrous metal mining and smelting activities have affected the health of local residents. It was found that the Cd concentrations in most soil and rice samples exceeded the national tolerance limits of China. Dietary intakes of rice and vegetables were the two major pathways of Cd exposure to local residents, accounting for >97% of the total probable daily intake. The excessive daily intake of Cd resulted in potential non-carcinogenic risks to the local residents, especially to children living around the two areas. The mean hair and urine Cd concentrations were 0.098 ± 0.10 mg kg^-1 and 5.7 ± 3.1 μg L^-1 in the mining area, and 0.30 ± 0.21 mg kg^-1 and 5.5 ± 3.5 μg L^-1 in the smelting area, respectively. A significantly positive correlation between hair Cd concentrations and the hazard quotient (HQ) for rice ingestion indicated that rice contamination had the most critical adverse effect on local residents. Due to the high levels of environmental Cd contamination, residents of the smelting area had a much higher Cd exposure than residents of the mining area. The results suggested that nonferrous mining and smelting should not coexist with agricultural activities. Effective contamination mitigation strategies and environmental remediation should be formulated and implemented to improve the health of local residents.

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in people living in urban and rural areas as revealed by hair analysis

Some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic and mutagenic to humans. However, little is known about PAH exposure to people living in urban and suburban areas through comparative studies. Some studies have indicated that human hair can be used as a noninvasive biomarker of PAH exposure. Therefore, we collected hair samples from 66 volunteers from Nanjing and Ningbo, China, to detect PAH concentrations in this work. The highest levels in the hair samples were found in phenanthrene > anthracene > naphthalene among the parent PAHs. Sixteen parent PAHs showed higher concentrations in the samples from Nanjing than in the samples from Ningbo. Significantly higher levels of some PAHs were observed in male hair than in female hair in Nanjing, and in hair from smokers than in hair from non-smokers in both Nanjing and Ningbo. In addition, there was a significant effect of the age on the concentration of low-molecular-weight PAHs and ∑PAHs in human hair in both Nanjing and Ningbo. Studying the inter-chemical associations between these PAHs indicated similarities and differences between Nanjing and Ningbo.

A field study of the fate of biosolid-borne silver in the soil-crop system

Land application of biosolids is a major route for the introduction of silver (Ag) into the terrestrial environment. Previous studies have focused on the risks from Ag to the human food chain but there is still a lack of quantitative information on the flow of biosolid-borne Ag in the soil-crop system. Two long-term field experiments were selected to provide contrasting soil properties and tillage crops to investigate the fate of Ag from sequentially applied biosolids. Biosolid-borne Ag accumulated in the soil and < 1‰ of applied Ag was taken up by the crops. The biosolid-borne Ag also migrated down and accumulated significantly (p < 0.05) in the soil profile to a depth of 60-80 cm at an application rate of 72 t biosolids ha^-1. Soil texture significantly affected the downward transport of biosolid-borne Ag and the migration of Ag appeared to be more pronounced in a soil profile with a low clay content. Moreover, loss of Ag by leaching may not be related to the biosolid application rate. Leaching losses of Ag may have continued for some time after biosolid amendment was suspended. The results indicate that soil texture may be a key factor affecting the distribution of biosolid-borne Ag in the soil-crop system.

A new criterion for the health risk assessment of Se and Pb exposure to residents near a smelter

There is an increasing evidence linking protective effect of selenium (Se) against Pb toxicology; however, Pb exposure risk assessments usually consider only the environmental Pb contamination and dietary intake. Based on the current understanding of mechanisms of SePb interactions, the physiological function/toxicology of Se and the toxicology of Pb, a new criterion for Se and Pb exposure assessment is developed. Additionally, seven existing criteria were also used to assess the resident health risks around a smelter in China. The Pb concentrations in locally-produced foods exceeded the national tolerance limits of China and the Se in the foods were similar to those in areas with adequate Se levels. In accordance with the illustrated assessments of the new criterion and seven existing criteria, we found a large knowledge gap between the new and traditional assessments of exposure to Pb and/or Se. The new assessment criteria suggested that almost all the residents were facing the Se deficiency and 58% of the residents not only had the adverse health of Se deficiency, but also had the health risks of Pb toxicity. The Pb and Se in the hair and urine may partly support the new criterion. This study suggested that the process of Se counteracting the Pb toxicity may result in Se deficiency. Pb exposure combined Se intake should be considered in future assessments of Pb exposure (or Se intake).

Distribution of metal and metalloid elements in human scalp hair in Taiyuan, China

This study investigated the levels of metal and metalloid elements (As, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in scalp hair samples collected from 161 people of different age and gender groups living in the six districts of Taiyuan, an industrial city with rich coal reserve in Shanxi province in China. Levels of most elements in the hair were high in the 26-40 age groups and increased with the length of residence. Calcium, Cr, Mg, Ni and Zn levels in the females' hair were significantly higher than those in the males' (p < 0.05). Element levels in the hair didn't have significantly differences between industrial and non-industrial districts because most of industry factories are in the upper wind position in Taiyuan, and contamination is prone to spread to non-industrial districts. The principal component analysis indicates that the main sources of these elements are mining activities, the neighboring stainless steel industry, and coal combustion. These results indicate that the industrial activities primarily contribute to the metal and metalloid pollution in Taiyuan, whereas numerous factors caused the metals accumulation in hair.

Uptake of silver by brown rice and wheat in soils repeatedly amended with biosolids

There have been numerous studies simulating the behaviour and fate of silver (Ag) applied to soils in biosolids in recent decades but the results remain to be verified under actual farming conditions. Here, we report a study of the transfer of Ag along the biosolids-soil-crop pathway with repeated biosolid applications over a four-year period to three contrasting soil types under rice-wheat rotation cultivation. A systematic investigation of Ag concentrations in biosolids throughout China shows Ag concentrations ranging from 0.64 to 7.47mgkg^-1 with a mean value of 3.58mgkg^-1 and a median of 3.02mgkg^-1 on a dry weight basis. Silver concentrations were significantly higher in industrial biosolids than in domestic or mixed flow biosolids. Biosolids application enhanced Ag accumulation in whole wheat. Silver concentrations in whole wheat increased to 20.8, 20.5 and 4.87μgkg^-1 after four years of high-metal industrial biosolids application to an acid Typic Ali-Perudic Aragsol, a neutral Typic Hapli-Stagnic Anthrosol, and a calcareous Typic Carbonati-Perudic Ferrosol, respectively. Moreover, the Ag translocation factor also increased in wheat following biosolids application with values of 5.6, 3.1 and 1.4, respectively. However, Ag accumulation in rice was found only in the acid soil with no discernible increase (p>0.05) in the translocation factor. The seasonal redox cycle may contribute to this phenomenon. A seedling incubation experiment confirms the influence of soil water regime on Ag bioavailability with a higher Ag translocation factor during the wheat growing season than the rice growth period. Incorporating a fallow period during the wheat (winter crop) season might be a suitable strategy for repeated biosolids application.

Concentrations and human health implications of heavy metals in market foods from a Chinese coal-mining city

Concentrations of heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb and Sb) in vegetables, meat and fish purchased from traditional agri-product markets in Huainan, China, were measured. Concentrations of the eight metals in most of the measured samples were lower than their respective maximum allowable concentrations (MACs), except for Pb, Cd, Cr and Cu in some of the samples exceeded safe limits. Based on local food consumption, the intake of individual metals was estimated to be less than their respective recommended limits. However, the overall target hazard quotient (THQ) for the eight metals was 1.07 based on the digestion of leafy vegetables and 2.12 based on the consumption of all of the investigated foods. The results of this study suggest that the overall risk from exposure to multiple metals in foods should be of concern, even though low-to-moderate heavy metal pollution is present in foods from Huainan markets.
