Redox polymerization of methyl methacrylate with allyl alcohol 1,2-butoxylate-block-ethoxylate initiated by Ce(IV)/HNO3 redox system

Grafting versus Crosslinking of Silk Fibroin-g-PNIPAM via Tyrosine-NIPAM Bridges

This paper reports the synthesis and complex characterization of novel polymeric networks based on the crosslinking of Bombyx mori silk fibroin via poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) bridges generated by an ammonium cerium nitrate redox system. The research study gives an understanding of the polymerization mechanism in terms of the generation of radical sites, radical growth and termination reaction, as well as the involvement of modifications on silk fibroin structure and properties. The physico-chemical characterization was carried out by FTIR-ATR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and RAMAN spectroscopy with unravelling the chemical modification. The structural characterization and spatial arrangement by secondary structure were carried out by X-ray diffraction and circular dichroism. The thermal behavior and thermal stability were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The novel complex polymer network is intended to be used in the field of smart drug delivery systems.

Facile preparation of luminescent cellulose nanocrystals with aggregation-induced emission feature through Ce(IV) redox polymerization

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are a novel type of natural nanomaterials that have attracted tremendous research interest for various applications especially in the biomedical fields owing to their natural origin, biodegradable potential, remarkable biocompatibility and massive reactive hydroxyl groups. In this work, a novel strategy has been developed for fabrication of luminescent CNCs with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature for the first time through a facile one-step Ce(IV) redox polymerization for direct surface grafting of AIE dye (PhE) and hydrophilic monomer Poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether acrylate (PEGMA) on CNCs. Various characterization techniques would demonstrate the successful preparation of resultant CNC-PhE-PEGMA with uniform nanoscale size, remarkable fluorescent properties and extremely low cytotoxicity. Furthermore, compared with conventional modification strategy of CNCs, Ce(IV) redox polymerization only need moderate temperature and can operate in aqueous solution utilizing surface hydroxyl groups of CNCs as polymerization activity sites. More importantly, CNC-PhE-PEGMA show desirable fluorescent properties and can be used for cell dyeing, indicating their potential for biomedical applications.

Synthesis of Cellulose-graft-Polypropionic Acid Nanofiber Cation-Exchange Membrane Adsorbers for High-Efficiency Separations

Fabrication of membrane adsorbers with elevated binding capacity and high throughput is highly desired for simplifying and improving purification efficiencies of bioproducts (biotherapeutics, vaccines, etc.) in the biotechnological and biopharmaceutical industries. Here we demonstrate the preparation of a novel class of self-supported, cellulose-graft-polypropionic acid (CL-g-PPA) cation-exchange nanofiber membrane adsorbers under mild reaction conditions for the purification of positively charged therapeutic proteins. In our fabrication method, acrylonitrile was first polymerized and surface grafted onto cellulose nanofibers using cerium ammonium nitrate as a redox initiator to form cellulose-g-polyacrylonitrile (CL-g-PAN). CL-g-PAN was then submitted to a hydrolyzation reaction to form CL-g-PPA cationic membrane adsorbers. Morphology and structural characterization illustrated the formation of CL-g-PPA membranes with uniform coating of polyacid nanolayers along the individual nanofibers without disturbing the nanofiber structure. Benefiting from these numerous cationic polyacid binding sites and inherent large surface area and open porous structure, CL-g-PPA nanofiber membrane adsorbers showed a lysozyme static adsorption capacity of 1664 mg/g of nanofibers. These membranes showed a lysozyme dynamic binding capacity of 508 mg/g of nanofibers at 10% breakthrough (equivalent to 206 g/L capacity), with a residence time of less than 6 s. Moreover, CL-g-PPA self-supported nanofibers displayed excellent structural stability and reversibility after several cycles of protein binding studies. This dynamic binding capacity of the CL-g-PPA nanofiber membranes was 3.2 times higher than that of macroporous cellulose membranes and 8.5 times higher than that of the Sartobind S commercial membrane adsorber. Considering the simple fabrication method employed, excellent protein adsorption capacity, remarkable structural stability, and reusability, CL-g-PPA nanofiber membranes provided a versatile platform for the chromatographic separations of biomolecules (e.g., proteins, nucleic acids, and viral vaccines) as well as water purification and similar ion-exchange applications.

Chemoselective phototransformation of C-H bonds on a polymer surface through a photoinduced cerium recycling redox reaction

It is generally accepted that Ce(4+) is unable to directly oxidize unreactive alkyl C-H bonds without the assistance of adjacent polar groups. Herein, we demonstrate in our newly developed confined photochemical reaction system that this recognized issue may be challenged. As we found, when a thin layer of a CeCl(3)/HCl aqueous solution was applied to a polymeric substrate and the substrate subjected to UV irradiation, Ce(3+) was first photooxidized to form Ce(4+) in the presence of H(+), and the in situ formed Ce(4+) then performs an oxidation reaction on the C-H bonds of the polymer surface to form surface-carbon radicals for radical graft polymerization reactions and functional-group transformations, while reducing to Ce(3+) and releasing H(+) in the process. This photoinduced cerium recycling redox (PCRR) reaction behaved as a biomimetic system in an artificial recycling reaction, leading to a sustainable chemical modification strategy for directly transforming alkyl C-H bonds on polymer surfaces into small-molecule groups and polymer brushes. This method is expected to provide a green and economical tool for industrial applications of polymer-surface modification.

Films of dextran-graft-polybutylmethacrylate to enhance endothelialization of materials

We have synthesized new structures obtained from amphiphilic copolymers of dextran and polybutylmethacrylate with the aim of endothelialization of biomaterials. Grafting of butylmethacrylate onto dextran has been carried out using ceric ammonium nitrate as initiator. Three copolymers were obtained (11, 30 and 37 wt.% dextran) and homogeneous thin films were successfully prepared. In contrast to dextran, the resulting films were stable in water, and copolymers characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis showed evidence of hybrid properties between the parent homopolymers. Surfaces of films were smooth when analyzed by atomic force microscopy (roughness 2+/-1 nm) but greatly differed in their hydrophilicity by increasing the dextran content (water contact angle from 99 degrees to 57 degrees). In contrast to polybutylmethacrylate, where the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) was excellent but that of endothelial cells was very low, the copolymer containing 11% of dextran was excellent for endothelial cells but very limited for VSMCs. An in vitro wound assay demonstrated that copolymer with 11% dextran is even more favorable for endothelial cell migration than tissue-culture polystyrene. Increasing the dextran content in the copolymers decreased the proliferation for both vascular cell types. Altogether, these results show that transparent and water-insoluble films made from copolymers of dextran and butylmethacrylate copolymers with an appropriate composition could enhance endothelial cell proliferation and migration. Therefore, a potential benefit of this approach is the availability of surfaces with tunable properties for the endothelialization of materials.

Synthesis and characterization of a new polysaccharide-graft-polymethacrylate copolymer for three-dimensional hybrid hydrogels

Hybrid materials constituted by hydrophobic and hydrophilic biocompatible macromolecules are useful for biomedical applications. In this context, a well-known acrylic monomer (methyl methacrylate) was polymerized and grafted onto the polysaccharide dextran by the use of ceric ammonium nitrate as a redox initiator in aqueous nitric acid medium. The effects of concentrations of dextran, acrylic monomer, and ceric ions on the copolymerization yields were investigated in detail. The obtained polymers were studied by solubility measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and viscosimetric analysis. Interestingly, we found conditions to form transparent and homogeneous thin films or 3D structures with hybrid properties. Indeed, the copolymer, but not dextran or PMMA, could be dissolved in water/THF (20/80 v/v). The thermomechanical properties of the resulting copolymer analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis showed the occurrence of a single glass-transition temperature and a marked difference with the two homopolymers. The cytocompatibility of the copolymer with human endothelial cells was evidenced by the normal cell adhesion, proliferation, and morphology after 5 days in culture on these gels. In conclusion, this type of copolymer with hybrid properties of two biocompatible macromolecules could be of great interest as a 3D scaffold or for coating in biomedical applications.
