Nonisothermal crystallisation, melting behavior and wide angle X-ray scattering investigations on linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) blends: effects of compatibilisation and dynamic crosslinking

Bio-Polyethylene Composites Based on Sugar Cane and Curauá Fiber: An Experimental Study

For the purpose of renewable materials applications, Curauá fiber treated with 5% sodium hydroxide was added to high-density biopolyethylene, using an entirely Brazilian raw material of sugarcane ethanol. Polyethylene grafted with maleic anhydride was used as a compatibilizer. With the addition of curauá fiber, the crystallinity was reduced, possibly due to interactions in the crystalline matrix. A positive thermal resistance effect was observed for the maximum degradation temperatures of the biocomposites. When curauá fiber was added (5% by weight), the morphology showed interfacial adhesion, greater energy storage and damping capacity. Although curauá fiber additions did not affect the yield strength of high-density bio polyethylene, its fracture toughness improved. With the addition of curauá fiber (5% by weight), the fracture strain was greatly reduced to about 52%, the impact strength was also reduced, suggesting a reinforcing effect. Concomitantly, the modulus and the maximum bending stress, as well as the Shore D hardness of the curauá fiber biocomposites (at 3 and 5% by weight), were improved. Two important aspects of product viability were achieved. First, there was no change in processability and, second, with the addition of small amounts of curauá fiber, there was a gain in the specific properties of the biopolymer. The resulting synergies can help ensure more sustainable and environmentally friendly manufacturing of automotive products.

Influence of Solid TAIC on Crosslinking LLDPE by Electron Beam Radiation

In this work, solid triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) has been fabricated and used as the crosslinking sensitizer for linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) crosslinking application. First, 0 phr, 1.5 phr, 3.0 phr, 4.5 phr and 6.0 phr solid TAIC have been added into the LLDPE to study the radiation crosslinking results. The resulting samples are measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), etc. The results reveal that the crystallinity, melt point, elongation and volume resistivity decrease when the content of solid TAIC increases in LLDPE from 0 phr to 6.0 phr. However, adding a proper amount of solid TAIC (3.0 phr) can improve the crosslinking degree and tensile strength of LLDPE. Finally, the space charge distribution of the samples has been measured, and the possible mechanism of solid TAIC that affects the LLDPE electrical properties is proposed.

Influence of organic phase change materials on the physical and mechanical properties of HDPE and PP polymers

In this work, the compatibility of four commercially available organic phase change materials, with melting points in the temperature range 44–58 °C and with engineering polymers high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP), is investigated. These polymers are used for the design and manufacture of hot and cold thermal energy storage tanks or encapsulation media. The study involves interaction of polymer specimens with the four different phase change materials for a period of time up to 40 days under high temperature. The mass change, mechanical strength and properties of the polymers were tested. The wt% uptake reached 6.4 wt% for PP and 5.8 wt% for HDPE. The strength of HDPE is immediately decreased by Day 7 but at a significant level restored after Day 28. No such effect was found for PP. The surface wetting as well as thermal properties measured (DSC) on the specimens provided an insight on the interaction of the absorbed phase change materials with the polymer. An in depth distribution over time was observed with significant decrease in the mechanical strength of the polymers. An epoxy-based resin was also evaluated under the same conditions and is suggested as a protective coating.

Organic PCMs affect HDPE and PP mechanical properties. HDPE strength is remarkably partly restored by the homogeneous distribution of absorbed PCM.

The effects of magnesium oxide on the thermal, morphological, and crystallinity properties of metallocene linear low-density polyethylene/rubbers composite

The effects on the thermal, morphological, and crystallinity properties of the different loadings of magnesium oxide (MgO) blended with 10% rubbers [9:1 natural rubber (NR)/epoxidized NR] and metallocene linear low-density polyethylene (mLLDPE) in the presence of N,N-m-phenylenebismaleimide (HVA-2) compatibilizer were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the epoxy and double-bond groups were absent in the blends. The crystallinity degree of mLLDPE composites were determined based on the results of differential scanning calorimetry. The crystallinity of the blends was continuously increased by the loading of MgO compared with blend of 0 phr MgO. Based on thermogravimetric analysis, the degradation temperature of NR in the blends with MgO is significantly enhanced compared with a pure NR and 0 phr MgO blend. The observations of the scanning electron micrographs indicate that the HVA-2 had caused a cross-linking reaction in the rubber phase and the domains of the MgO are separated from the continuous phase (mLLDPE).

Evaluation of two polymeric blends (EVA/PLA and EVA/PEG) as coating film materials for paclitaxel-eluting stent application

The ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) blend and EVA/Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) blend were applied as the drug carrier materials for a bi-layer drug-loaded stent coating film, which consisted of a paclitaxel (PTX)-loaded layer and a drug-free EVA layer. The changes of weight and appearance of the drug-free polymeric blend films with increasing time were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) tests and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and the results showed the degradation of PLA and the leaching of PEG from the films. The effects of PLA, PEG and drug contents on in vitro drug release were investigated, and the results demonstrated that the addition of PLA promoted the drug release while the addition of PEG almost did not. Franz cells diffusion test results indicated that the bi-layer structure successfully endowed the stent coating with the release of drug in a unidirectional fashion. The release profiles of films incorporated PTX and the mechanical performance of the film could be customized by readily adjusting the contents of the blend components. Therefore, the polymeric blends could be useful drug carrier materials for drug-loaded stent coating capable of releasing drug in a highly tunable manner.
