Abstract
The synthesis of a high-performance oxidative cross-linked thermoset alkyd coating is described that utilizes a novel recycling strategy from contaminated postconsumer waste polyethylene terephthalate (wPET). A single-stage "depolymerization-repolymerization" process has been developed that allows the exploitation of a waste stream from a commercial PET recycling process with 95% efficiency, which, when copolymerized with glycerol and tall oil fatty acid, delivers a sustainable fatty acid-functional polyester suitable for use in thermoset alkyd coatings. Physical drying challenges have been tackled via the development of a convergent polymer formulation strategy from a single source of wPET and the formulation of the resulting fatty acid-functional polymers with commercial alkyd driers, delivering a thermoset alkyd coating suitable for industrial applications.

Abstract
Utilizing triethylenediamine (DA), 1,3-propanesultone (PS), whose ring opens during the formation of the dizwiterion-intermediate DA-2PS, and the metal chlorides XCly, where X = Sn(IV), Zn(II),Al(III), Fe(III) and Mn(II), are used for the synthesis of five kinds of acidic metal-based functionalized ionic liquid catalysts ([DA-2PS][XCly]2). Their chemical structures, thermal stability and dual acidic active site were analyzed. We investigated the performance of [DA-2PS][XCly]2 in catalyzing the esterification reaction between 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and ethylene glycol (EG) to synthesize poly (ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate)(PEF). Among the catalysts tested, [DA-2PS][SnCl5]2 exhibited the best catalytic performance under identical process parameters, and the optimal catalyst dosage was determined to be 0.05 mol% based on FDCA. The optimal conditions for the reaction were predicted using response surface methodology: a feed ratio of EG:FDCA = 1.96:1, an esterification temperature of 219.86 °C, a polycondensation temperature of 240.04 °C and a polycondensation time of 6.3 h, with a intrinsic viscosity of 0.67 dL·g-1. The resulting PEF was experimentally verified to exhibit an intrinsic viscosity of 0.68 dL·g-1 and a number average molecular weight of 28,820 g·mol-1. Finally, the structure and thermal properties of PEF were characterized. The results confirmed that PEF possessed the correct structure, exhibited high thermal stability and demonstrated excellent thermal properties.

Abstract
![]()
With the goal of
achieving high barrier with bio-based materials,
for example, for packaging applications, a series of novel furfural-based
polyesters bearing sulfide-bridged difuran dicarboxylic acid units
with high oxygen barrier properties were synthesized and characterized.
For the novel poly(alkylene sulfanediyldifuranoate)s, a 11.2–1.9×
higher barrier improvement factor compared to amorphous poly(ethylene
terephthalate) was observed which places the novel polyesters in the
top class among previously reported 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA)
and 2,2′-bifuran-based polyesters. Titanium-catalyzed polycondensation
reactions between the novel synthesized monomer, dimethyl 5,5′-sulfanediyldi(furan-2-carboxylate),
and four different diols, ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol,
and 1,5-pentanediol, afforded difuran polyesters with high intrinsic
viscosities (0.76–0.90 dL/g). These polyesters had good thermal
stability, decomposing at 342–363 and 328–570 °C
under nitrogen and air, respectively, which allowed processing them
into free-standing films via melt-pressing. In tensile testing of
the film specimens, tensile moduli in the range of 0.4–2.6
GPa were recorded, with higher values observed for the polyesters
with shorter diol units. Interestingly, besides the low oxygen permeability,
the renewable sulfide-bridged furan monomer also endowed the polyesters
with slight UV shielding effect, with cutoff wavelengths of ca. 350
nm, in contrast to FDCA-based polyesters, which lack significant UV
light absorption at over 300 nm.

Abstract
This critical review considers the extensive research and development dedicated, in the last years, to a single polymer, the poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate), usually simply referred to as PEF. PEF importance stems from the fact that it is based on renewable resources, typically prepared from C6 sugars present in biomass feedstocks, for its resemblance to the high-performance poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and in terms of barrier properties even outperforming PET. For the first time synthesis, properties, and end-life targeting—a more sustainable PEF—are critically reviewed. The emphasis is placed on how synthetic roots to PEF evolved toward the development of greener processes based on ring open polymerization, enzymatic synthesis, or the use of ionic liquids; together with a broader perspective on PEF end-life, highlighting recycling and (bio)degradation solutions.

Abstract
Polyesters based on 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) are a new class of biobased polymers with enormous interest, both from a scientific and industrial perspective. The commercialization of these polymers is imminent as the pressure for a sustainable economy grows, and extensive worldwide research currently takes place on developing cost-competitive, renewable plastics. The most prevalent method for imparting these polymers with new properties is copolymerization, as many studies have been published over the last few years. This present review aims to summarize the trends in the synthesis of FDCA-based copolymers and to investigate the effectiveness of this approach in transforming them to a more versatile class of materials that could potentially be appropriate for a number of high-end and conventional applications.

Abstract
In the field of polymer chemistry, tremendous efforts have been made over the last decade to replace petrochemical monomers with building blocks from renewable resources. In this respect, itaconic acid has been used as an alternative to acrylic acid or maleic acid in unsaturated polyesters for thermal or UV-curing applications. However, examples of poly(ester amide)s from itaconic acid are scarce. Under standard polycondensation reactions, the presence of free amines leads to aza-Michael addition reactions at the α,β-unsaturated double bond of the itaconic acid and isomerization reactions to mesaconic acid. Both reactions make the resulting materials useless as UV-curing polymer resins. To avoid these undesired side reactions, we herein report the use of preformed, well-defined diols containing internal amide bonds. The resulting unsaturated poly(ester amide) resins were analyzed before and after UV-induced crosslinking. Viscosity measurements revealed a strong thixotropic behavior induced by the amide groups, which is usually not detected in structurally similar polyester resins.

Abstract
Green synthesis of bioderived high-molecular-weight poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) over metal-free catalysts is a significant challenge. This study focuses on PEF prepared from ethylene glycol and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) through a direct esterification method with ecofriendly metal-free ionic liquids (ILs) as catalysts. The catalytic activities of a series of imidazolium cations in the presence of various anions are systematically investigated and found to be mainly governed by the anions. Among the ILs studied, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C2 MIM]BF4 ) is identified as the best catalyst, showing excellent catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability, even at low catalyst loadings (0.1 mol % w.r.t. FDCA). Optimization of the polymerization parameters enables [C2 MIM]BF4 -catalyzed production of PEF with a high number-average molecular weight (Mn =5.25×104 g mol-1 ). The relationship between Brønsted acidity and catalytic activity is also investigated and the results show that the trend in catalytic activity is in good agreement with that in Brønsted acidity, as determined by the Hammett method. Additionally, on the basis of experimental results and density functional theory calculations, an electrophilic activation mechanism induced by hydrogen bonds is proposed. This strategy of adjustable acidity and anion structure in ILs provides an opportunity to develop other ILs for bio-based polyesters through green synthesis pathways.

Abstract
Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is a biobased polyester characterized by high gas barrier properties as well as high tensile modulus and strength, but poor toughness. Toughening PEF without sacrificing its modulus, strength and gas barrier performance is a great challenge for PEF modification. In this study, high molecular weight random poly(ethylene- co-1,5-pentylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate)s (PEPeFs) were synthesized via melt copolycondensation of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,5-pentanediol (PeDO), a cheap, biobased and commercially available odd-carbon comonomer. The synthesized PEPeFs were characterized and assessed with intrinsic viscosity, ATR-FTIR, 1H NMR, DSC, TGA and tensile, impact and O2 permeation test. Mayo-Lewis equation with "reactivity ratio" of 3.78 for PeDO and 0.75 for EG could be used as an empirical equation to correlate the copolyester composition (ϕPeF) with monomer composition. PEPeFs proved nearly amorphous copolyesters having excellent thermal stability. Brittle-ductile transition was achieved at ϕPeF as low as 9 mol %. Increasing ϕPeF led to increase in elongation at break and notch impact strength and decrease in Tg, O2 barrier performance and tensile modulus and strength. However, in comparison with PEF, PEF-rich PEPeFs (ϕPeF 9-47%) not only showed greatly improved elongation at break (29-265% vs 4%) and enhanced impact strength (2.2-3.9 kJ/m2) but also retained very high Young's modulus (2.8-3.3 vs 3.3 GPa) and yielding strength (72-83 vs 82 MPa). Particularly, when compared with bottle-grade PET, PE82Pe18F possesses equal Tg (ca. 75 °C) and comparable elongation at break (ca. 115%), but greatly improved yielding strength (83 MPa) and O2 gas barrier property (4.8 times). As modified PEF materials possessing superior thermo-mechanical and O2 gas barrier properties, these integrally biobased copolyesters may find practical applications in eco-packaging and other fields.

Abstract
Biobased polymers have seen their attractiveness increase in recent decades thanks to the significant development of biorefineries to allow access to a wide variety of biobased building blocks. Polyesters are one of the best examples of the development of biobased polymers because most of them now have their monomers produced from renewable resources and are biodegradable. Currently, these polyesters are mainly produced by using traditional chemical catalysts and harsh conditions, but recently greener pathways with nontoxic enzymes as biocatalysts and mild conditions have shown great potential. Bacterial polyesters, such as poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s (PHA), are the best example of the biotic production of high molar mass polymers. PHAs display a wide variety of macromolecular architectures, which allow a large range of applications. The present contribution aims to provide an overview of recent progress in studies on biobased polyesters, especially those made from short building blocks, synthesized through step-growth polymerization. In addition, some important technical aspects of their syntheses through biotic or abiotic pathways have been detailed.

Abstract
Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), an agricultural renewable resource material, produces natural phenolic distillates such as cardanol. Cardanol condenses with formaldehyde at the ortho- and para-position of the phenolic ring under acidic or alkaline condition to yield a series of polymers of novolac- or resol-type phenolic resins. These phenolic resins may further be modified by epoxidation with epichlorohydrin to duplicate the performance of such phenolic-type novolacs (CFN). The structural changes during curing of blend samples of epoxy and carboxyl terminated poly (butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (CTBN) were studies by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer. The epoxy samples were synthesized by biomass material, cardanol. Blend sample was prepared by physical mixing of CTBN ranging between 0 and 20weightpercent CTBN liquid rubber into cardanol-based epoxidized novolac (CEN) resin. The FTIR spectrum of uncured blend sample clearly indicated that there appeared a band in the region of 3200-3500cm-1 which might be due to the presence of phenolic hydroxyl group and OH group of the opened epoxide. Pure epoxy resin showed peaks near 856cm-1 which might be due to oxirane functionality of the epoxidized novolac resin. Both epoxy and its blend sample was cured with polyamine. The cure temperature of CEN resin was found to be decreased by the incorporation of CTBN. The decomposition behavior was also studied by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Two-step decomposition behavior was observed in both epoxy and its blend samples.
