Molecular dynamics and crystallization precursors in polylactide and poly(lactide)/CNT biocomposites in the insulating state

Promoting Interfacial Interactions with the Addition of Lignin in Poly(Lactic Acid) Hybrid Nanocomposites

In this paper, the calorimetric response of the amorphous phase was examined in hybrid nanocomposites which were prepared thanks to a facile synthetic route, by adding reduced graphene oxide (rGO), Cloisite 30B (C30B), or multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to lignin-filled poly(lactic acid) (PLA). The dispersion of both lignin and nanofillers was successful, according to a field-emission scanning-electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis. Lignin alone essentially acted as a crystallization retardant for PLA, and the nanocomposites shared this feature, except when MWCNT was used as nanofiller. All systems exhibiting a curtailed crystallization also showed better thermal stability than neat PLA, as assessed from thermogravimetric measurements. As a consequence of favorable interactions between the PLA matrix, lignin, and the nanofillers, homogeneous dispersion or exfoliation was assumed in amorphous samples from the increase of the cooperative rearranging region (CRR) size, being even more remarkable when increasing the lignin content. The amorphous nanocomposites showed a signature of successful filler inclusion, since no rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) was reported at the filler/matrix interface. Finally, the nanocomposites were crystallized up to their maximum extent from the glassy state in nonisothermal conditions. Despite similar degrees of crystallinity and RAF, significant variations in the CRR size were observed among samples, revealing different levels of mobility constraining in the amorphous phase, probably linked to a filler-dimension dependence of space filling.

Poly(l-Lactic Acid)/Pine Wood Bio-Based Composites

Bio-based composites made of poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and pine wood were prepared by melt extrusion. The composites were compatibilized by impregnation of wood with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APE). Comparison with non-compatibilized formulation revealed that APE is an efficient compatibilizer for PLLA/wood composites. Pine wood particles dispersed within PLLA act as nucleating agents able to start the growth of PLLA crystals, resulting in a faster crystallization rate and increased crystal fraction. Moreover, the composites have a slightly lower thermal stability compared to PLLA, proportional to filler content, due to the lower thermal stability of wood. Molecular dynamics was investigated using the solid-state ¹H NMR technique, which revealed restrictions in the mobility of polymer chains upon the addition of wood, as well as enhanced interfacial adhesion between the filler and matrix in the composites compatibilized with APE. The enhanced interfacial adhesion in silane-treated composites was also proved by scanning electron microscopy and resulted in slightly improved deformability and impact resistance of the composites.

Study of the Molecular Dynamics of Multiarm Star Polymers with a Poly(ethyleneimine) Core and Poly(lactide) Multiarms

Multiarm star polymers, denoted PEIx-PLAy and containing a hyperbranched poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) core of different molecular weights x and poly(lactide) (PLA) arms with y ratio of lactide repeat units to N links were used in this work. Samples were preconditioned to remove the moisture content and then characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). The glass transition temperature, T_g, is between 48 and 50 °C for all the PEIx-PLAy samples. The dielectric curves show four dipolar relaxations: γ, β, α, and α′ in order of increasing temperature. The temperatures at which these relaxations appear, together with their dependence on the frequency, allows relaxation maps to be drawn, from which the activation energies of the sub-T_g γ- and β-relaxations and the Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann parameters of the α-relaxation glass transition are obtained. The dependence of the characteristic features of these relaxations on the molecular weight of the PEI core and on the ratio of lactide repeat units to N links permits the assignation of molecular motions to each relaxation. The γ-relaxation is associated with local motions of the –OH groups of the poly(lactide) chains, the β-relaxation with motions of the main chain of poly(lactide), the α-relaxation with global motions of the complete assembly of PEI core and PLA arms, and the α′-relaxation is related to the normal mode relaxation due to fluctuations of the end-to-end vector in the PLA arms, without excluding the possibility that it could be a Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars type ionic peak because the material may have nano-regions of different conductivity.
