Structure analysis of ethylene/1-octene copolymers synthesized from living coordination polymerization

Biomimetic high performance artificial muscle built on sacrificial coordination network and mechanical training process

Artificial muscle materials promise incredible applications in actuators, robotics and medical apparatus, yet the ability to mimic the full characteristics of skeletal muscles into synthetic materials remains a huge challenge. Herein, inspired by the dynamic sacrificial bonds in biomaterials and the self-strengthening of skeletal muscles by physical exercise, high performance artificial muscle material is prepared by rearrangement of sacrificial coordination bonds in the polyolefin elastomer via a repetitive mechanical training process. Biomass lignin is incorporated as a green reinforcer for the construction of interfacial coordination bonds. The prepared artificial muscle material exhibits high actuation strain (>40%), high actuation stress (1.5 MPa) which can lift more than 10,000 times its own weight with 30% strain, characteristics of excellent self-strengthening by mechanical training, strain-adaptive stiffening, and heat/electric programmable actuation performance. In this work, we show a facile strategy for the fabrication of intelligent materials using easily available raw materials.

Toughened High-Flow Polypropylene with Polyolefin-based Elastomers

Polyolefin is the most widely used and versatile commodity polymer. In this work, three types of polyolefin-based elastomers (PBEs) were adopted to toughen a high-flow polypropylene to improve its overall performance. The chain microstructures of these PBEs, including ethylene/1-octene (E/O) random copolymer from Dow Chemical′s polyolefin elastomer (POE), olefin block copolymers (OBCs) of E/O from Dow, and ethylene/propylene random copolymer from ExxonMobil’s propylene-based elastomer, were elucidated by GPC, ¹³C NMR, TREF, and DSC techniques. The mechanical, thermal and optical properties, and morphology analysis of the PP/PBE blends were also studied to investigate the toughening mechanism of these PBEs. The results showed that all three types of PBEs can effectively improve the Izod impact strength of the PP/PBE blends by the addition of the rubber compositions, at the cost of the stiffness. PBE-1 and PBE-2 were found to have a great stiffness–toughness balance with about 1700 MPa of flexural modulus, about 110 °C of HDT and 3.6 kJ/m² of impact strength on the prepared PP/PBE blends by forming separated rubber phase and refined spherulite crystals. As a result, the OBC with alternating hard and soft segments could achieve a similar toughening effect as the E/P random copolymer. Surprisingly, no obvious rubber phase separation was observed in the PP/PBE-4 blend, which might be due to the good compatibility of the E/P random chains with the isotactic PP; therefore, the PP/PBE blend obtains great toughness performance and optical transparency with the highest Izod impact strength of 4.2 kJ/m² and excellent transparency.

Studies on chain shuttling polymerization reaction of nonbridged half-titanocene and bis(phenoxy-imine) Zr binary catalyst system

In this contribution, olefin block copolymers were produced via chain shuttling polymerization (CSP), using a new combination of catalysts and a chain shuttling agent (CSA) diethylzinc (ZnEt₂). The binary catalyst system included nonbridged half-titanocene catalyst, Cp*TiCl₂(O-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃) (Cat A) and bis(phenoxy-imine) zirconium, {η ²-1-[C(H)=NC₆H₁₁]-2-O-3-^tBu-C₆H₃}₂ZrCl₂ (Cat B), as well as co-catalyst methylaluminoxane (MAO). In contrast to dual-catalyst system in the absence of CSA, the blocky structure was obtained in the presence of CSA and rationalized from rheological studies. The binary catalyst system could cause the CSP reaction to occur in the presence of CSA ZnEt₂, which yielded broad distribution ethylene/1-octene copolymers (M _w/M _n: 35.86) containing block polymer chains with high M _w. The presented dual-catalytic system was applied for the first time in CSP and has a potential to be extended to produce a library of olefin block copolymers that can be used as advanced additives for thermoplastics.
