Microporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate) microspheres: synthesis, functionalization and applications

As a new kind of functional material, micron-sized porous polymer microspheres are a hot research topic in the field of polymer materials.

Electrospun nanofibers: a promising horizon toward the detection and treatment of cancer

Due to the increase in the number of cancer patients, because of environmental parameters, high stress, low immunity, etc., there is an urgent need to develop cost-effective sensors for early targeted detection of cancerous cells with adequate selectivity and efficiency. Early disease diagnosis is important, as it is necessary to start treatments before disease progression. On the other hand, we need new, more efficient cancer treatment approaches with minimized side effects, more biocompatibility, and easy disposal. Nanobiotechnology is a field that can assist in developing new diagnostic and treatment approaches, specifically in fatal cancers. Herein, a study on the different applications of nanofibers in cancer detection as well as its treatment has been done. Here, a very brief survey on the main structure of biosensors and their different categories has been conducted and will precede the discussion of the study to serve as a reference and guide the reader's understanding.

Preparation of morphology-controllable PGMA-DVB microspheres by introducing Span 80 into seed emulsion polymerization

Microporous, hollow, or macroporous polymer spheres were prepared by a seed emulsion polymerisation method. Different from the conventional seeded emulsion polymerization, the sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) was added to the seeded emulsion polymerization. In this study, the monodisperse PS seeds prepared by dispersion polymerization were swelled by dibutyl phthalate (DBP), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), divinylbenzene (DVB) and Span 80 successively. The effect of the amount of Span 80 on the morphology of microspheres was investigated. As different amount of Span 80 was added to the mixture, the poly(glycidyl methacrylate-divinylbenzene) (PGMA-DVB) microspheres showed a variety of morphologies containing microporous, hollow, and macroporous structure. In addition, uniform hollow particles with different pore size can be obtained through adjusting the amount of Span 80.

The obtained PGMA-DVB microspheres showed a variety of morphologies by adjusting the amount of Span 80 in the seeded emulsion polymerization.

Assembly of functional gold nanoparticle on silica microsphere

We demonstrate a controlled synthesis of silica microsphere with the surface-decorated functional gold nanoparticles. Surface of silica microsphere was modified by 3-aminopropypltriethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyldimethylethoxysilane to generate a positive electric field, by which the gold nanoparticles with the negative charges (unconjugated, thiolated polyethylene glycol functionalized with the traceable packing density and conformation) were able to be attracted to the silica microsphere. Results show that both the molecular conjugation on gold nanoparticle and the uniformity in the amino-silanization of silica microsphere influenced the loading and the homogeneity of gold nanoparticles on silica microsphere. The 3-aminopropyldimethylethoxysilane-functionalized silica microsphere provided an uniform field to attract gold nanoparticles. Increasing the ethanol content in aminosilane solution significantly improved the homogeneity and the loading of gold nanoparticles on the surface of silica microsphere. For the gold nanoparticle, increasing the molecular mass of polyethylene glycol yielded a greater homogeneity but a lower loading on silica microsphere. Bovine serum albumin induced the desorption of gold nanoparticles from silica microsphere, where the extent of desorption was suppressed by the presence of high-molecular mass polyethylene glycol on gold nanoparticles. This work provides the fundamental understanding for the synthesis of gold nanoparticle-silica microsphere constructs useful to the applications in chemo-radioactive therapeutics.

Preparation of Monodisperse Porous Silica Particles Using Poly(Glycidyl Methacrylate) Microspheres as a Template

Monodisperse macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) microspheres were used as a template for preparing porous silica particles. The starting polymer microspheres that were 9.3 μm in size were synthesized by multistep swelling polymerization using a modified Ugelstad technique. Subsequently, silica (SiO2) was deposited on the surface and inside the PGMA microspheres to produce poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-silica hybrid particles (PGMA-SiO2). Upon calcination of the PGMA-SiO2 microspheres, porous silica particles were formed. The morphology, particle size, polydispersity and inner structure of the silica microspheres were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic adsorption of nitrogen determined the amount of silica formed and its specific surface area. Compared with the starting PGMA microspheres, the size of the porous silica particles decreased by up to 30 %. These porous silica microspheres are promising for chromatography and biomedical applications.

Use of specific polysaccharide-immobilized monodisperse poly(glycidyl methacrylate) core-silica shell microspheres for affinity purification of lectins

Immobilization of polysaccharides (yeast mannan and gum arabic) on the macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate) monodisperse microspheres coated with silica (SiO2 )-containing amino groups on the surface was used to prepare affinity sorbents for lectin purification. The efficiency of isolating mannose specific Pisum sativum lectin was demonstrated on sorbent with immobilized yeast mannan and that of galactose specific Glycine hispida lectin on sorbent with immobilized gum arabic. The microspheres with immobilized polysaccharides can be used for selecting an affinity sorbent for purification of other mannose- and galactose-specific lectins. In contrast to yeast mannan, the gum arabic immobilized on the microspheres possesses much narrower specificity and is suitable for purification of only those galactose specific lectins which interact well with l-rhamnose or l-arabinose. The synthesized macroporous particles are capable of immobilizing 50 mg of polysaccharide per 1 g of the matrix, which is 10 times higher than the capacity of epoxy-activated Sepharose 6B. That makes it possible to obtain the same lectin quantity using a column of 10 times smaller volume. Another advantage of novel affinity sorbents comparing corresponding Sepharose gels is the possibility of sorbent drying after use.
