A Brief Review on Advanced Sandwich Structures with Customized Design Core and Composite Face Sheet

Sandwich structures are a class of multifunctional high-performance structural composites that have the advantages of being lightweight, of a high strength-to-weight ratio, and of high specific energy absorption capabilities. The creative design of the core along with the apposite material selection for the fabrication of the face sheet and core are the two prerequisites with encouraging areas for further expedition towards the fabrication of advanced composite sandwich structures. The current review work focused on different types of core designs, such as truss, foam, corrugated, honeycomb, derivative, hybrid, hollow, hierarchical, gradient, folded, and smart core along with different composite materials accessible for face sheet fabrication, including fiber-reinforced composite, metal matrix composite, and polymer matrix composite are considered. The joining method plays a major role for the performance evolution of sandwich structures, which were also investigated. Further discussions are aligned to address major challenges in the fabrication of sandwich structures and further enlighten the future direction of the advanced composite sandwich structure. Finally, the work is summarized with a brief conclusion. This review article provides wider guidelines for researchers in designing and manufacturing next-generation lightweight multilayer core sandwich structures.

Cellulose-based film modified by succinic anhydride for the controlled release of domperidone

Succinic anhydride (SAD) modified microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) films was prepared and used for the controlled release of the drug domperidone (dom). The morphology and chemical structure of the modified materials were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD and TG/DSC techniques. The physical properties, such as water uptake and swelling, light barrier properties, mechanical testing, in vitro degradation behavior, have been investigated. Results showed that the modified cellulose membranes exhibited good anti-UV properties, higher water uptake values, improved mechanical capacity and anti-biodegradability. In addition, the modified MCC films (MS) as the drug carrier indicated the controlled release of domperidone and the release mechanism was proposed using Korsmeyer-Peppas equation at pH 7.4. The developed drug delivery system possessed the profound significance in improving pharmacodynamics and bioavailability of drugs.

NO prodrug-conjugated, self-assembled, pH-responsive and galactose receptor targeted nanoparticles for co-delivery of nitric oxide and doxorubicin

Targeted delivery and controlled release of nitric oxide (NO) locoregionally are in high demand and challenging in cancer treatment. Herein, we report an example of galactose receptor targeted, pH-responsive and self-assembled nanoparticle-based delivery of the NO prodrug O²-(2,4-dinitrophenyl) 1-[4-(propargyloxycarbonyl)piperazin-1-yl]diazen-1-ium-1,2-diolate (alkynyl-JSK), which was chemically conjugated to an amphiphilic block copolymer through a click reaction for the first time. The assembled NO prodrug nanoparticles show high NO capacity (the content of the NO prodrug in the copolymer, ∼23.4% (w/w)), good stability and a sustained NO release pattern with unique glutathione/glutathione S-transferase (GSH/GST) activated NO-releasing kinetics. Such NO-loaded nanoparticles exhibit superior cytotoxicity to HepG2 cells. More importantly, in combination with doxorubicin (DOX) chemotherapy a significant synergistic therapeutic effect was achieved, due to its excellent galactose receptor-targeting capability, rapid acid-triggered DOX release and sustained NO release. Our findings indicate that these multifunctional nanoparticles can serve as an efficient NO and chemotherapeutic agent delivery platform, holding great promise in cancer combinatorial treatment.

Changes in dissolved organic matter composition and metabolic diversity of bacterial community during the degradation of organic matter in swine effluent

In this study, an incubation experiment was conducted with effluent collected from the concentrated swine-feeding operations (CSFOs) located in Yujiang County of Jiangxi Province, China. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the relationships between the composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the community-level physiological profiles (CLPPs) of microorganisms in swine effluent. For all samples examined, the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) were decreased by an average of 58.2 ± 30.4 and 49.2 ± 38.7 %, whereas total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) exhibited an average final accumulation of 141.5 ± 43.0 %. In the original samples, ammonium nitrogen accounted for 88.9 ± 4.9 % of the TDN, which was reduced to a final average of 83.9 ± 9.6 %. Two protein-like (tyrosine and tryptophan) and two humic-like (fulvic acids and humic acids) components were identified using a three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix. With the increase in incubation time, the relative concentrations of two protein-like components in effluent were reduced by an average of 83.2 ± 24.7 %. BIOLOG(™) ECO plates were used to determine the metabolic fingerprint of the bacterial community, and a shift in the utilization patterns of substrates was observed over the study period. Additionally, the Shannon-Wiener index of CLPP was ultimately reduced by an average of 43.5 ± 8.5 %, corresponding to the metabolic diversity of the bacterial community. The redundancy analysis identified significant relationships between environmental parameters and the CLPP of microorganisms. To a certain degree, the DOM compositions were linked with the substrate utilization patterns of the bacterial community during the degradation of organic matter in swine effluent.
