Mechanisms of polyaniline film formation via solution casting: Intra-chain contraction versus inter-chain association

Hybrid Nanocomposites Based on Poly(3,6-dianiline-2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone): Synthesis, Structure and Properties

Hybrid nanocomposites based on poly(3,6-dianiline-2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone) (PDACB) in salt form and graphene oxide (GO) have been obtained for the first time, and the significant influence of the preparation method on the composition and structure of nanocomposites and their functional properties has been demonstrated. Nanocomposites were prepared in three ways: via ultrasonic mixing of PDACB and GO; via in situ oxidative polymerization of 3,6-dianiline-2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (DACB) in the presence of GO; and by heating a suspension of previously prepared PDACB and GO in DMF with the removal of the solvent. The results of the study of the composition, chemical structure, morphology, thermal stability and electrical properties of nanocomposites obtained via various methods are presented. Nanocomposites obtained by mixing the components in an ultrasonic field demonstrated strong intermolecular interactions between PDACB and GO both due to the formation of hydrogen bonds and π-stacking, as well as through electrostatic interactions. Under oxidative polymerization of DACB in the presence of GO, the latter participated in the oxidative process, being partially reduced. At the same time, a PDACB polymer film was formed on the surface of the GO. Prolonged heating for 4 h at 85 °C of a suspension of PDACB and GO in DMF led to the dedoping of PDACB with the transition of the polymer to the base non-conductive form and the reduction of GO. Regardless of the preparation method, all nanocomposites showed an increase in thermal stability compared to PDACB. All nanocomposites were characterized by a hopping mechanism of conductivity. Direct current (dc) conductivity σdc values varied within two orders of magnitude depending on the preparation conditions.

Precursor Customized Assembly of Wafer-scale Polymerized Aniline Thin-films for Ultrasensitive NH3 Detection

2D conducting polymer thin-film recently has garnered numerous interests as a means of combining the molecular aggregate ordering and promoting in-plane charge transport for large-scale/flexible organic electronics. However, it remains far from satisfactory for conducting polymer chains to achieve desirable surface topography and crystallinity due to lack of control over the precursor involved interfacial assembly. Herein, wafer-size polyaniline (PANI) and tetra-aniline (TANI) thin-film has been developed via a controlled interfacial synthesis with customized surface morphology and crystallinity through two typical aniline precursors selective polymerization. Two crucial competing assembly mechanisms, a) direct interfacial polymerization, b) solution polymerization and subsequent interfacial assembly, were investigated to play a vital role in determining elemental chain length and aggregate architecture. The optimal PANI thin-film manifests ultra-flat surface topography and unambiguous crystalline domains, which also enabling fascinating ammonia sensing capability with 31.4%/ppm sensitivity, fast response time (88 s) with astonishing selectivity, repeatability and recovery capability. The thus-demonstrated strategy with wafer-scale processing potential and flexible micro-device offers a promising route for large-scale manufacturing thin-film organic electronics. Dynamics of Excitons in Conjugated Molecules and Organic Semiconductor Systems

The exciton, an excited electron-hole pair bound by Coulomb attraction, plays a key role in photophysics of organic molecules and drives practically important phenomena such as photoinduced mechanical motions of a molecule, photochemical conversions, energy transfer, generation of free charge carriers, etc. Its behavior in extended π-conjugated molecules and disordered organic films is very different and very rich compared with exciton behavior in inorganic semiconductor crystals. Due to the high degree of variability of organic systems themselves, the exciton not only exerts changes on molecules that carry it but undergoes its own changes during all phases of its lifetime, that is, birth, conversion and transport, and decay. The goal of this review is to give a systematic and comprehensive view on exciton behavior in π-conjugated molecules and molecular assemblies at all phases of exciton evolution with emphasis on rates typical for this dynamic picture and various consequences of the above dynamics. To uncover the rich variety of exciton behavior, details of exciton formation, exciton transport, exciton energy conversion, direct and reverse intersystem crossing, and radiative and nonradiative decay are considered in different systems, where these processes lead to or are influenced by static and dynamic disorder, charge distribution symmetry breaking, photoinduced reactions, electron and proton transfer, structural rearrangements, exciton coupling with vibrations and intermediate particles, and exciton dissociation and annihilation as well.

Synthesis and Conductivity Studies of Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) (PMMA) by Co-Polymerization and Blending with Polyaniline (PANi)

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a lightweight insulating polymer that possesses good mechanical stability. On the other hand, polyaniline (PANi) is one of the most favorable conducting materials to be used, as it is easily synthesized, cost-effective, and has good conductivity. However, most organic solvents have restricted potential applications due to poor mechanical properties and dispersibility. Compared to PANi, PMMA has more outstanding physical and chemical properties, such as good dimensional stability and better molecular interactions between the monomers. To date, many research studies have focused on incorporating PANi into PMMA. In this review, the properties and suitability of PANi as a conducting material are briefly reviewed. The major parts of this paper reviewed different approaches to incorporating PANi into PMMA, as well as evaluating the modifications to improve its conductivity. Finally, the polymerization condition to prepare PMMA/PANi copolymer to improve its conductivity is also discussed.

Engineering crystalline quasi-two-dimensional polyaniline thin film with enhanced electrical and chemiresistive sensing performances

Engineering conducting polymer thin films with morphological homogeneity and long-range molecular ordering is intriguing to achieve high-performance organic electronics. Polyaniline (PANI) has attracted considerable interest due to its appealing electrical conductivity and diverse chemistry. However, the synthesis of large-area PANI thin film and the control of its crystallinity and thickness remain challenging because of the complex intermolecular interactions of aniline oligomers. Here we report a facile route combining air-water interface and surfactant monolayer as templates to synthesize crystalline quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) PANI with lateral size ~50 cm2 and tunable thickness (2.6-30 nm). The achieved q2D PANI exhibits anisotropic charge transport and a lateral conductivity up to 160 S cm-1 doped by hydrogen chloride (HCl). Moreover, the q2D PANI displays superior chemiresistive sensing toward ammonia (30 ppb), and volatile organic compounds (10 ppm). Our work highlights the q2D PANI as promising electroactive materials for thin-film organic electronics.
